Final breakthrough for HS2’s longest tunnel

  • The second giant boring machine (TBM) building HS2 under the Chiltern Hills broke through at the tunnel’s northern portal, completing a journey that began in June 2021.
Named Cecilia, the TBM has driven for 10 miles underground to join twin sister machine - Florence. She arrived at the site near the Buckinghamshire town of Wendover on 27 February, after completing her adjacent tunnel drive.
Between them, the two 2,000 tonne machines have built the twin bore tunnel at depths of up to 80 metres and excavated three million cubic metres of chalk. Each machine operates like an underground factory, able to excavate the tunnels and line them with 56,000 pre-cast concrete tunnel segments, grouting them into place and moving forward at an average speed of 16 metres per day.
When HS2 is operational trains will travel through the Chiltern tunnel - the line’s longest - at speeds of up to 200mph, helping to almost halve journey times between Britain’s two largest cities.
The new high-speed line will relieve traffic the West Coast Mainline, freeing up space for more local services on the most crowded part of the important Victorian route. It will almost double rail capacity between London and the West Midlands, providing a more reliable service and driving economic growth.

Yep. Ultimately high speed rail needs to be extended all the way to Edinburgh and Glasgow, as the entire point of HS2 is to move InterCity trains off of the existing mainlines, so that the existing mainlines can be repurposed to take more commuter trains and more freight services (both of which travel at around the same speed).
I would suggest though, that we take the unwarranted pause in HS2 development as an opportunity to improve the plan from a bunch of branches that all point towards London and replace them with high speed through stations in every city on the Western leg and Eastern leg that we get added back into the plan.
We just spend a considerable number of decades delaying the Crossrail plan to connect the railway terminals at Paddington and Liverpool Street. It doesn't make sense for our high-speed network to make the mistake of repeating the short-sightedness and scatter more terminal stations in English cities, when we know that the cities will become more successful and eventually render all those terminal stations obsolete.
The line into London could have instead been built as a line through London, with a station similar to the Old Oak Common design in the heart of London an onward connection to HS1 and land on London not being dedicated to trains that park there waiting for a new crew. The same could have been done at Birmingham Curzon Street. The site was big enough to have sunk a box in the ground large enough for TBMs to pass under Birmingham and then carry on.
There must be at least one big public park, in the centre of every large city in England, that could temporarily be converted into a construction site, so that an InterCity station, with connections to local metro services could be dropped into the city and so that obsolete mainline terminal stations can be replaced. We will have to "Crossrail" our way through cities, as they grow. So our switch from mixed traffic trains to high-speed rail and a switch to local train services optimised for local people, should really move in the logical direction and not repeat the short-sightedness of Victorians.

But it is a shame that our current prime minister has deliberately "salted the earth" by ordering the quick sale of land, at a loss, so that any plans by another government to restore those sections can be claimed to be "too expensive". To work against the needs of the Midlands, and North England and Scotland, just to cock-block the Labour Party is totally shameful.
It's one thing for political parties to have a different opinion about "what is best for Britain" but actually damaging the economic future of the Midlands, to prevent the Labour Party from reversing funding cuts borders on treason.
