  • Emily Hicks, President and Co-Founder of FREDsense Technologies, discusses their MICA-funded project focused on portable water chemistry analysis units. These devices, developed from work at the University of Calgary, use genetically modified microbes to detect contaminants like arsenic and selenium. The technology allows on-site, rapid analysis, overcoming the delays and limitations of traditional lab testing. FREDsense's first product, an arsenic sensor, achieved significant detection accuracy. Their latest sensor targets PFAS and selenium, essential for mining industries. The company aims to refine and pilot these sensors, addressing storage challenges and preparing for commercial launch.
This presentation was made on June 24, 2024, at the Mining Innovation Commercialization Accelerator (MICA) funding announcement event at MaRs Discovery District in Toronto.
