You stuck the bag over your finger! That's GENIUS! I've turned pens for 2 years and just accepted the fact that I would get glue on my fingers.

I did this exact project at school when I was younger. (obviously out of normal wood). Some kids also had their pens explode on the lathe too 😂. It's sitting on my desk in front of me right now. This video is quite nostalgic. 😜 Keep up the great work!

Rockler Lovin this channel. Keep up the good work. Your videos are always interesting.
To make things a little safer while working with smaller pieces and turning wood that might have loose internal fragments I recommend trying impregnating the piece with resin using a vacuum seal method. It will pull the resin deep inside and give you a more solid working material. It does take longer to make but the pieces will also last longer because they will be less prone to moisture fluxes. Once again keep up the good work. Look forward to more videos.

When you get down towards your final dimensions on a segmented piece put some thin CA on it to help hold it together. Also I totally agree with you on the lathe vs tools! I also use a Harbor Freight lathe but all my tools are either Rockler carbide or Robert Sorby (that I got at Rockler).

When i use softer woods on the lathe I usually round them on a sanding belt first to hopefully avoid chipping. It still happens sometimes but it's definitely easier. And when they break I glue them back on and continue making it.
