Prince Rupert, BC - Driving through the city 2021

- Just a drive around the city of Prince Rupert. Wanted to show the city as it is at the time of this video. I found videos of Rupert from the 1970's and 1990's. Very interesting to see how much the city has changed. I was born here and have seen so much change especially with the collapse of the fishing industry, but Prince Rupert will always be home. Hope you like the video.
My hometown! It’s the people that keep you here!! Love it been here since 1981!!!
Thank you for this tour .. But I 'm wondering : Where are the people !!??
It's an empty city !!
I thought the same (I l've here and have for over 63 years). I have never seen it like this but if this was Spring 2021 we had a bad COVID situation at that time so maybe that's it????
You drove past the two places I worked when we lived in Rupert in the 70's, the Museum and the little building in Seal Cove the North Coast (aka North Crash) Air Service operated out of. Rupert had about 15,000 people when we lived there, I see there are now 3,000 fewer people, but it's obviously the service centre for Haida Gwai and the villages up and down the Coast. In the 70s there were no big box stores. There was a Woolworth's - with wooden plank floors - on 3rd St. The other 'shopping opportunities' were Mom and Pop stores. LOL There was a fellow on the pier in Cow Bay who fished for Ling Cod in the morning, and opened up at about 4:00 pm to sell Brit-style fish 'n chips, wrapped in newspaper. Best fish I've ever tasted.
One thing that gave Rupert a small town feel was the community radio system. It was used to keep track of the Island's bear population, "Mothers on 7th Ave, 1600-1800 block East, there's a bear in your neighbourhood, looks like it's headed down to Seal Cove. Best bring in the kids and dogs." And since there was no reliable way for people on shore to stay in contact with family members and friends on boats, CBC radio did a 15-minute "message" segment every hour. You could call in a message for someone on a boat and the CBC would broadcast it in the message segment. "Charlie Jack on the Purple Dolphin out of Masset, your wife says to add a five kilo bag of sugar to her grocery list." "This is from Rita Samson: to Ging̱olx folks; "Hey, anyone's who's in Rupert and coming home to Ging̱olx tonight, please go to the Woolworths and buy a Teddy bear 12-14" tall. Our new puppy tore Linnie's Teddy up and she can't sleep without it. You all know what that bear looks like, she carries it with her everywhere." You knew everyone's business. I still dream about the place.
I also grew up there and moved away to Pennsylvania and it is amazing how things have changed mind you I was much younger my parents now are in their 80s and they always talk about the crest hotel I don’t know if you showed it in your video but if you can show it again so I can show my parents who go up there as well Thank you so much
ok I will
he showed it in this video about halfway to 3/4 way through. The Crest was just sold by the long time owners.
@@alexwill3722 Hello I'm aln international student and I will be coming on August , sorry to bother you could you tell me if I can find a job in prince Rupert
2:26, what are thise two fire trucks doing at Kingdom hall?
I might be going to school here soon and I am not excited about it. The city looks like a ghost town. The weather seems to be rainy most of the time giving the city a gloomy feel. I worry I will find this city very depressing.
Seems like a nice place never thought itvwas that big but i like it maybe drive there next summer
Awesome vid. It's amazing how much has changed and how much is still the same. I lived there in the 70s when the fishing and the pulp mill were in full swing, seems like if it wasnt for tourism and Ridley things would be alot worse.
That’s for sure
Grew up 63-79 fishin off Atlin tie up. Catch cat fish most but deck bosses would see 5 rods empty and send the kids home Broom stick Full. Loved it
I'm 66 years old born and raised in PR. Lived here for most of my life.
2:19, how that would not warrant a warning is beyond me.
Ohh Smiles cafe and Kwinitsa!😊
Hello I'm an international student , how can I find accomodation in prince Rupert?
I lived there about 40 years ago, worked for a while at the Moby Dick Hotel, looks like it's still there! Prince Rupert has seen better days for sure.
Thanks for posting this. I was born here in 93 and moved in 2008, I haven't been back and I really want to visit, this was really good to see.
There's more to see
So much more to see, hard finding time

surprised it wasn't raining.
look at the roads....it had been not too much before h started filming.
We moved away from here around 1975 to West Vancouver, I was going into grade four. What a culture shock. Great Video, thanks :)
even worse now, more buildings coming down, just tore down old dairy queen
It was a culture shock to me when after I graduated HS in 1976 I moved to Vancouver to attend uni.
I'm interested in Prince Rupert. I just wonder if the city will be a bigger one someday. (When the economy gets better.) Another big city in BC. And if the city has spare land to expand.
Town is going downhill from time of this video, more empty buildings boarded up than businesses running
@@northof5085 went there fishing late 90s, seems kinda like nanaimo, going downhill
Thanks to both of you. I hope it gets better someday. But, still It looks like there's no spare land for another big city in BC such as Vancouver.
Are there many jobs available?@@northof5085
