Hardly anyone I know owns their car except for me.
My Rover 75 owned since 2007 with 210k miles still going strong.
Saved me £102,000 by not opting for a crazy lease package.

Seriously? Are people this stupid/desperate/vain that they insist on paying through the nose for a bloody metal box on wheels? Jeez I've only ever bought my cars outright. I don't care about the badge on the front as long as it gets me from A to B. Currently riding around in a 12 year old civic that has been ultra reliable, serviced at home by myself and has nearly 180,000 miles on the clock. Original cost in 2018 was less than £4k.
And I'm someone who is in the upper tax bracket. Fuck knows why anyone would be gullible enough to want to spunk a chunk of their monthly pay on a bloody depreciating asset!

I’m guessing it’s unwillingness of buyers to take on finance on new cars, particularly as finance isn’t so cheap anymore with higher interest rates. I think it’s a good thing, it was ridiculous a few years ago when you could get a perfectly good working car less than 10-years old for £300

I like the 2 000 to 5 000 cars you are selling and your thoughts and considerations about market in general and specific older products and why you prefer to buy these like the VW polo from 2005 or so where you explained the quality they still have while the polo competitors of that era have already been scrapped sometimes years ago. great one even though not much relevance from central european market but for sure regarding reliability.

A bit out of your normal price range of cars but any idea on my predicament? I bought a Corolla hatchback a year ago, 2022 plate cost 26k (was showing on Autotrader around 1k below market average) the estate version was ball park 1-2k more for the same model etc. I have only done 3k miles since, was looking to basically get around the same year/mileage but an estate version of the Corolla. I was surprised to see the estate had only slightly dropped, like by 1-2k but our hatchback had dropped a fair way more, part ex price around £19,400 (I know part ex can be roughly 2k difference from retail). So if I was to change would cost around £5,600 which is crazy🙃.

i think people generally are seeing evs as not the future theres firstly range anxiety if you can find a charger and the time taken up to charge then theres the 2nd hand values and battery degradation plus battle for affordable insurance plus etc etc etc
if it kicks off in the middle east oil is going to go skyward its already creeping up to $100 again so i think your in the right place but do think your going to get a lot more competition or at least dealers offering the same product low tax high mpg and affordable entry point as i dont think we are done with inflation at all

I did consider when the market was in its low point but interest rates still too steep and running a 14 reg with low running costs (free road tax, economical and big hatchback) make it sweet spot over standard rate tax, badge engineered SUV etc

Hello Lee. Thanks for your views on the car market. I drive a 2 year old Volvo XC60 which I leased over 3 years from new. I can’t wait for the lease to end next March. I only leased this petrol/mild hybrid as I needed a bit of power to pull our caravan and, because of the COVID issues, there were very few alternatives and even fewer diesels, my personal preference. The Volvo struggles to do 30mpg when doing normal driving, just over 20 pulling the caravan. I therefore decided to look for a second small car for my wife so we could use it for short journeys and try to save some money. However, in my area there are no dealers I know well enough to trust and if I look at used cars from main dealers, they are invariably expensive, warranty is an extra and they are happy to sell cars without full advisory free MOTs and with poor service history. I wish i lived closer to you!😮😊

Don't see how car prices can continue to increase or even stagnate, given that household budgets continue to be squeezed by rising utility bills. Would imagine more and more people will be unwiling to part with their current vehicles, surely this will force dealers to sell fewer cars at higher margins which does not seem to be a sustainable practice in the long run. To put it simply car buyers are increasingly broke, and broke people dont buy expensive cars and since most cars are now expensive, thats a lot of cars not gerting sold. Eventually somethings got to give.

I have driven Petrol Mercedes since 1999, when I got an E200 7 seater estate. it was about 5 years old when I bought it for £8500. I kept it for 16 years and while friends and family alike slowly took the lease route, I went the auction route. I bought a ten year old C320 in 2013 for £1900 plus auction fees down at Paddock wood and sold it two years ago for £1200 to a lad in the next town. Great car.
I decided to play safe for my next car and got a ten year old C180 at £11800 plus £600 for Gardex ( bag of shite in my view). I had a 12 month Mercedes Warranty that meant nothing. I still had to pay for a repair on the Turbo oil feed pipe. It gave up the ghost at 60k miles and needed a new engine. I had brought it back rattling after two or three months but they could not find the problem. The dealer eventually took it back out of good faith, although I had consulted a legal view and it did not end up in court. The point I am running away from is that the prices of cars are so much dearer now. I pray that they come down and people can get good cars at reasonable prices. I am presently driving an old X reg E class that I bought at a point in my life where My C320 had a problem. I bought this car at 39000 miles for less than £2k its 20000 miles older but it is worth more than I paid. Car prices are still just a little bit crazy

Reality is that you won’t be able to buy a new ICE after 2035. At all. The law is already in place, even if it was pushed back to that from 2030. The car manufacturers have already committed their spending years in advance and have said they won’t be building much at all after 2030 if at all. That was the original date they were set and have aimed for. Added into that is the ZEV mandate for minimum zero tailpipe emissions sale % increasing year on year starting at 22% this year.

Petrol Cars are what a lot of people want and not hybrids as they are not the same as a Petrol car. I say that as the owner of two petrol cars. I had one of my cars serviced recently and was given a Mazda 2 Hybrid which is Mazda's version of a Toyota Yaris. Whilst it drove ok it is not the same as a petrol car. It has it's quirky things such as you cannot sit with the radio on when are parked for more than twenty minutes because it drains the battery. Why Volvo gave up making Petrol and Diesel cars amazes me. Thanks for your insight Lee always interesting.

It doesn't help when small new cars are getting rarer and going up a lot in price partly due to all the passive electronic safety aids they are having to be lumbered with. Some have said it's lucky the UK is RHD since equivalent used prices of LHD cars on the Continent can be much higher. People might not like Chinese EV's but at least they are putting downward pressure on EV prices as they come into the UK market. I can also see a blip/uplift in the demand for used hybrids. The market is also becoming distorted with new drivers wanting automatics and the increasing cost of repairs meaning more older cars are getting scrapped. It's also interesting that the average age of motorbike owners is now late 50's - long gone are the days of young lads starting out on mopeds/bikes before upgrading to cars.

I believe you are in the safe zone of market changes.. Prices are high, too high but there are still enough buyers.
I for one purchased a Subaru Forester as a 2nd vehicle and as a vehicle for towing .. I am forward planning for when it will be difficult to get a sturdy 4wd vehicle. EVs will never be off road tough tow vehicles..

I don't see how EV's can ever fully replace combustion engines. My area is predominately terraced housing without off road parking. Charging would be a big problem. I'm not against them at all, but even if they drop in price dramatically, the practicality just isnt there for a lot of people.

but in 10 years or at the end in 20 years you will drive one or go by feet.
Take a bike and ride that without battery or with and you will realize how convenient the drive train can be. But no one will force anyone cause the manufacturer have already decided that they can not make profits from ice cars with the huge efforts needed to clean the exhaust. We do no longer have cheap ice cars due to that. And it will continue while EV will get faster charging speeds, bigger batteries and more range. Also the prices are dropping so at the end you will end in an EV but maybe you do not like acceleration.
I love my old V12 roadster but I hate to see the huge maintenance bills and increasing unreliability and even though it has 500+ PS my EV is accelerating and outperforming that roadster every time - sad but true. And forget about the sound cause it is 1.5 seconds slower from 0 to 60 than the EV.
If you hate it then you might no have driven one and the last one who had said that or better the last 2 buddies that are ice mechanic had been turned around in a ioniq n which si a sporty one with engine sound and acting like a golf RS with doubleclutch gearbox , so it has a motorbreak when you shift through the gears by using pedals. These boys started loving cause they had gotten the full emotion they had been missing even in model s plaid. But they were completely convinced after a 30 minutes test drive and did not even wonder about range or what not cause the fully adoption of a manual ice behaviour similiar to a golf rs has caught them on the wrong food, they could not believe that acceleration and the fraction of the second when the clutch separated the drivetrain / gears and pushes your body.
They could not believe it - so at the end you will end up in an EV and learn slowly why they are so much better overall - and I had been working for the oldest car manufacturer for about 2 decades in hq and the plants, had contracts with the competitors like Audi and Porsche but all are full ahead into electrification cause that is the only way to make profits again and it is about to achieve the transition before the chinese arrive which can not build ice cars and never could, but EV is a different story.

Cars not many years ago with 100000 on it were not really worth more than £5000, but dealers will tell you don't worry they can do the miles, problem is for the used car buyer they have ready done it and in a lot of cases there not doing it for much longer before theystart costing big money.
