Can't thank you enough for making this video. My 2018 Ford Focus suffered a wet belt failure at 33000 miles. Been chasing my tail trying to find my cars service history as Ford customer care said they would not touch the car unless it had a full service history. They never mentioned the 2020 gap (this was the only one I was missing). Sent my case back and it has been approved for repair. 6 weeks without my car so far, what a nightmare.

Thank you for your videos on this issue, especially this one. They've have really helped us out (massively). Our 2017 Eco Boost Focus failed two weeks ago at 49K miles. It is currently sitting forlornly on the drive after being recovered by Green Flag. I'd never heard of this problem before. After viewing your videos I went to the local main Ford dealer armed with my independent garage service history, which they appeared to accept. Its booked in for "Analysis" next week. This is costing about £140 which I hope to reclaim later. I'll tell you how it goes. Thanks again.
After the failure we've now had the car "analysed" by the dealer (£130) and they've said in essence there no oil pressure and the engine is b*ggered (not the term they used) . To be fair they've been quite helpful. They are now pursuing the issue with Ford on our behalf. So far so good. Update in the near future.
Thanks for the update, really interesting but always disappointing to hear how big manufacturers operate now. I bought a used 1.0L EcoBoost Focus earlier in the year, died on the motorway ten days later (unrelated to wet belt, was leaking coolant) and went back to dealer. By chance, ended up watching your videos on EcoBoosts and as a result ended up opting for a 1.6L Duratec Focus, it does the job and it's not a race car but I'll take that over an engine clogged with rubber and brake failures any day! So, thanks for info and keep up the good work.
Just had belts replaced on 2014 Focus 1.0 ecoboost manual estate, at ford main dealer Aberdare, cost: £1,240.00. We only do about 5k a year (68k in total) so that, I think, reduced the possibility of engine failure. Plus never missed a main dealer service. I would never buy another wet belt car, so who in their right mind would buy ours?? We either run the car into the ground (we actually love the car) as we do such little milage or take a huge hit on trade in? N.B. the car to date has cost in repairs with the above belt £3k including *leaking slave brake cylinder at 50k, as brake cylinder in bell housing also changed clutch. *Front brake discs *Engine mounting bolt snapped and engine collapsed (luckily happened on driveway) Did I say we love this car??!! Thank you Car UK
@@xKazor666x As our car is ten years old it required a belt change as per Ford recommendation. I was told by Ford dealer that the recommended belt change mileage has been reduced from 150k to 120k. As the engine had no issues there would be no financial compensation.

A friend of mine got a quote from a Dutch Ford dealer for a 2013 Focus with about 110.000 miles from € 2.800,-. I bought a Fiesta ST line X 125 EcoBoost Hybrid but that should have a distribution chain as I understand. Mine is from 2021 and had done 45.000 miles( 32.000 when I bought it). Does it help when I change oil after 7 or 8 months in stead of 2 years? Sorry for my English
Lucky enough after seeing your video I've booked my 2015 1Ltr ecoboost with 47000 on the clock in for a wet belt change at my local garage. I've been quoted about £950-£1000. After that's been done I'm getting rid of it. At least I can get a bit more trading it in if the belts have been done as I've had a few traders say they don't take ecoboosts.
Ford had taken to long to try sort this problem out with the junk engines as people have lost alot of money and many have been scrapped because of the problem so still don't look good and people still won't want ford to little to late to be fair but really good of you to tell everyone 👍

Mine went and had to fork out £7250 for the engine change. I lost my car docs i a house move, Called the dealer who told me to verify with Ford CRC who told me the service interval was 15k miles/ 12 months. The car was serviced on a service plan and the dealer didn't query my services. CRC came back that my service history is poor and no assistance will be given

Thank you so much for this video has brought up so much clarity about the issue of eco boost in the UK. I have a manual fiesta 2016 reg and by the VIC sticker it states is a 2012 eco boost engine. I am due a service. I have a full service history with independent garages but never with a for dealership. I have booked today for the service and there is going to be a cam belt check as part of the service. In the last service was at a different garage than my usual and i have no confidence that the oil in part of the service was the specified recommended for my 1L ecoboost engine so the system is getting an oil flush as well. I will carry on updating after a service. More news coming in 4 weeks time. Fingers crossed
Under no circumstances should you flush the oil in a Eco boost engine with a additive, you can only use 5w20 in the engine even if you want to run it up and flush it.
@@carukchannel Thank you very much. Is a Ford garage and they’re aware of the issue so they will do timing belt diagnostic first and they are aware of my uncertainty of the oil used in the last service. They assured will only use 5w20 oil if they need to flush it but I will ensure I still state it again on the day, unless I buy it and bring it with me (something that the service centre guy told me I could do if I wanted to be sure). If I’m buying you have a recommended link where I can order it (I prefer buying best recommended grade recommendations if possible)

Hi, I bought a 2013 C-Max in October 2023 with a good service history, and because it was 10 years old, I had the belts and pumps replaced. The mileage was 48k. I was given the parts they had replaced, and I have to say there had been no noticeable deterioration in them. I paid £780 for the work to be done.
What a great summary of the current situation with this prolific engine, you're again helping lots of people for no other reason than the desire to do the right thing, so good on ye mate! I've told many people about the woes of this flawed engine and most people don't seem to believe me or say "I've never had any bother with mine" etc. Very annoying. They can't say that now!
Excellent video Thank you for posting it It’s almost incredulous that a company like Ford is still making mistakes with engine design (and component design eg heated windscreen washers). You would think that by now, there would no problems with the IC engine.
I have a ford fiesta ecoboost on a 64 plate. Full service history with 35,500 miles on it. Hopefully will have a bit more life in it for a while. Great video thanks for the update.
Hi Terry. I have 64 plate too but with 77000 on the clock. Local mechanic is replacing the belts as of today and mentioned how blocked the oil pickup was. He took pictures so will be interested to see the state of it. I’m not sure if it’s overall mileage or the cam and auxiliary belts running oil for 10 years or more you should be equally as concerned about? You may want to consider your options.
We had a failure in our 62 plate focus ecoboost, ex-mobility car cost us over 4k for a 'new' engine ( with Ford Staff Discount) as there was one service 6+m late ( service 2 ) so basically told us to get lost Will try contacting them again but don't hold out any hope - car is now in my wife's name and not mins Thanks for this update :)
Thanks Lee , Tried to get on the scheme as Local Ford Garage said engine was beyond economical repair following turbo failure that resulted in metal in engine. the engine was 9 yrs old at this time . having seen your Video - reporting the problem now just past 10yrs old and Ford flatly refusing to help .

Class action lawsuits are possible in the UK too. The US has very stringent laws around vehicles being fit for purpose hence the chances of success is far higher.
Thanks for the update. I was considering a fiesta for my daughter but this put me off Ford cars completely. Ford have been caught out here and the general public will go elsewhere. Ford need to have an internal review in order to regain public confidence in their products. I will not consider any Ford products due to this issue which is a shame as generally, their cars are great to drive.
Buy a VW Polo instead of a Fiesta, 1.2 bluetech 89bhp. Best used car I've ever bought. Fiesta ecoboost is more fun to drive but the Polo beats it in just about every other area in my experience
And when the car is 10 years old, you are on your own, scrap value, anything longer is a bonus. Cars should easily last for 15 to 20 years these days, but not Ford Eco-Boom.

Glad Ford are finally helping people who have suffered with the wetbelt issue. I have the coolant intrusion issue with my Ford Kuga 1.5lt Ecoboom, which unfortunately is now out of warranty at 8 years old and 53k miles. I was told by my local Ford dealer it's not a common issue, yet they have a technical document for this issue (so it must be common enough) recommending a new short block at the cost of £6000, car is only worth about £8000. The document in question is GSS 20-7037. I asked the dealer for a copy of this document but they wouldn't share. Any chance you have or can find a copy of it? Any advice for what I can do next? To make it worse, our water pump bearings are extremely noisy (another common fault with these engines) but I'm reluctant to replace it and get a timing belt done when the engine needs replacing anyway! Such a shame because we love the car, just wish it didn't have such an awfully designed engine under the bonnet!
At least they’ve shifted a bit maybe they’ll be pushed further in time. I’m surprised no one has come up with an after market chain for both cambelt and fuel pump maybe a chain I dunno?
Glad I came across this. I've got a 2016 Fiesta Zetec - serviced regularly and with less than 25k on the clock. I'm concerned though - it's our main car and I ferry the kids around in it. There was no need for Ford to implement wet belts in the first place. It bring no advantage to you. It's a gamble. Keeping to specified intervals reduces the risk of failure but does not eliminate it. You've got away with it that's cool for you. But you should not even have the problem. Ford are being cheapskate dicks all over their vehicles. 2.7l F150 V6 has a wet belt oil pump drive. You can't even see it to check it. It runs inside the replace if removed plastic sump pan. 4 cars in 11 years with 100K and 180K on a couple of them? What the hell do you do?
Do know someone who works for a hire/leasing car company. On looking for another car he told me to steer clear from the Ecoboost engines for this exact reason as he gets to know of the common faults on cars.
Had they been serviced? There’s vans on the road now used daily by a friend of mines company who service it every 2 years or 24k miles by Ford and the vans are 8 years old done 90k and still run perfect in daily use. But then hear or vans doing 50k that are 3/4 years old failing with no history and people wonder why

the engine itself is not bad... actually making such a smooth 3-cylinder engine is quite a feat. The wet belt is the issue. Wet belts are just not reliable enough yet.
22:21 guys and gals! And every person in between, take a closer look at YOUR car,at the service miles intervals ,at the calender. Oli change at least once a year, look regularly at the engine oil level, coolant level. And so on. It prevents expensive damage. In most of the cases.
That's good news for anyone affected. It also highlights the fact that Ford (including many other manufacturers - NOT just cars) has known about a problem for many years and worse than doing nothing they have refused to help. Quick to push out the product and not so quick to fix the problems. In the worst cases blaming the consumer and charging extortionate prices for a fix. Almost every major manufacturer does exactly the same thing. Take Sony Mobile Communications as an example. They lied about their Xperia phones being waterproof. Now, after a class action in the USA every owner of these models in the USA are due a 50% refund. But' NOT so in the UK. From experience they wanted me to part with £180 to have my phone fixed and sent back. When I pointed out the class action, they refused to honour the ruling. This was of course many years ago. I've never owned a Sony phone since. The problem we all have with this is who to trust with your purchase?

Anyone know if newer cars with Ecoboost are more reliable or if they still have wetbelts? I like the Focus and really fancy the Active model... 😂
Full service history theres the catch of course they would do that because they wont do it free if the engine was cooked cos of lack of maintainance/wrong oil used. Apparently Ford replace their own diesel fleet at 80k but warranty to 100k or 3 years. Currently being charged £1000 per wet belt but got told by the dealer they re-use the old oil! We are having a full service as the wet belts are being changed increasing cost to over £1200. My van is just 3 years old with fsh and has done 90k and is booked in for a wet belt as it seems its a risk for the extra 20k miles. I've done 1 out of 4 vans at the moment. Mine will be the 2nd van I've had the belt replaced on. Its not just getting it done for free it's the down time and loss of earnings we would incur when or if it goes bang. I'll be going Mercedes for my fleet in future as the cost difference In a new van doesn't warrant the risk and extra depreciation as nice as the 170bhp customs are.
Simple. Maintain the wet belts should be a ford's warranty period on wet belt engines period (any part that's a rubber belt in oil). If you own a eco boost wet belt sell it fast. Never buy a ford ecoboost wet belt system car, vehicle.

By chance, ended up watching your videos on EcoBoosts and as a result ended up opting for a 1.6L Duratec Focus, it does the job and it's not a race car but I'll take that over an engine clogged with rubber and brake failures any day! So, thanks for info and keep up the good work.
Yes old fashioned 1.6 in my Focus, 250,000 miles and no problems.

N.B. the car to date has cost in repairs with the above belt £3k including
*leaking slave brake cylinder at 50k, as brake cylinder in bell housing also changed clutch.
*Front brake discs
*Engine mounting bolt snapped and engine collapsed (luckily happened on driveway)
Did I say we love this car??!!
Thank you Car UK
Engine collapsed?? do you mean the engine dropped off its mounting? Sounds nasty anyway.
Did ford compensate the cost? I'm confused what you're supposed to do about a belt that could fail at any time. Ford focus 1.0 101k 2016 plate.
@@xKazor666x As our car is ten years old it required a belt change as per Ford recommendation. I was told by Ford dealer that the recommended belt change mileage has been reduced from 150k to 120k. As the engine had no issues there would be no financial compensation.

You're helpful videos are making me consider against buying a Focus with Ecoboost, i assume it'll come with the aforementioned risks, or should I trust Ford, and if i get a second hand 2020 or 2021 Focus it 'shouldn't' develop this issue (you previously mentioned it was only 2016-2018 Focus Ecoboost engines developed this problem)?? Anyone know if newer cars with Ecoboost are more reliable or if they still have wetbelts? I like the Focus and really fancy the Active model... 😂
Full service history theres the catch of course they would do that because they wont do it free if the engine was cooked cos of lack of maintainance/wrong oil used. My mum has one it's been off the road for about 1.5 years now so the service history isn't gonna be upto date cos of that she got a new car instead of the ridiculous cost to fix it but the car is still on finance paying for a broken car
@@visiblekoment The document said the goodwill will only be applicable if you have full service history
@@visiblekoment They havnt recalled it yet in the uk the document it just says that they are gonna do it as a goodwill gesture but only if u have full service history documents but don't have that so it won't be applicable and the cost to get it towed there only to be denied it's not worth it
@@sbrader97make your own service history. Backdate your own receipts. Backdate your own work done and service stamps.
Service history has zero legal standing.
Well done for helping making this known to Ford , and at last social media has helped
Do some diesels have wet belts ?
Oh My God!!! This is an absolute shame. I sure feel for people who bought these vehicles and are having to go through this.
I enquired if my Vauxhall Corsa had this system fitted to my three cylinder engine. I was told it had, so I've got rid and purchased a Toyota diesel!!
and guess what i'm servicing this weekend??? cheers buddy,i'll be telling the customer the great news.
Simple. Maintain the wet belts should be a ford's warranty period on wet belt engines period (any part that's a rubber belt in oil).
If you own a eco boost wet belt sell it fast. Never buy a ford ecoboost wet belt system car, vehicle.
The 1.0 eco boost engine is the reason I haven't got a Ford. From day one that engine was troublesome. I know good garages that refuse to do a cam belt change as you need special parts and it takes ages. It's cost them big.
What about the 1.2 Purecrap engine?
They already have a recall but only for cars between 2013-2017
This sort of engine is in corsa now as well isnt it?
@@bobmartin5101 Yeah the new shape corsa uses it the old shape astra and corsas used gm 1.2 engine the astra k had a 1.2 turbo but it was still a gm engine not the wetbelt pureshit
The new shape astra also uses wet belt , and from what I hear is also having problems. A pal of mine has just bought one , a year old . Had his regular mechanic take a look over the car post purchase who told him that they have been doing on average 2 engines per week
Wet belt of any brand is a no no
Excellent video, thank you so much in making it
Damn…. Our ecoboost is a 2013 with 90,000 on the clock
Same here and no decent service history when I bought it so just have to drive and hope.
Then you've already won 👍
Replacing the wet belt today on the 2019 Transit I have just purchased - 113k costing me £1500. My dream of owning a Transit which I can also use as a camper has been tarnished by Ford. Not only is the belt's robustness an ongoing worry, I didn't budget for this - I hope the new belt will be problem free.
