  • Rose of Jericho, resurrection plant.
Filmed by Neil Bromhall for www.rightplants4me.co.uk
The Rose of Jericho is a tumble weed and can be blown over the desert for up to 10 years. This will spread the seeds over a very large area.
When it rains the branches take in water and open. The dead plant seems to be resurrected. The seeds are dispersed by the rain hitting the specially shaped seed pods.
Seeds germinate within a few days. The seeds that fall on poor soil the seedlings will wither and die.
Seeds falling on good soil the seedlings will thrive.
The flowers are pollinated by insects.
Eventually the plant will die and the branches will fold in to form a ball. The winds then blow the tumble weed for miles over the desert until the next heavy rain and the process is repeated.
I originally filmed this sequence for the BBC 'Africa' series. I filmed much of the work again and incorporated unused sections by the BBC.
The time lapse was filmed in my studio in Oxford.
Music: 'Circles of uncertainty' by Oliver Ledbury

@K P, I would like to ask you the following if you can help me.
I've got the Rose of Jericho for many years. My query is that only the first time it opened it turned green, since then whenever it opens, the leaves are brown.
What could be the reason of happening this? Thanks a lot for your help.

The plant you're talking about is called selaginella lepidophylla - the "False Rose of Jericho". The plant shown in the video is an anastatica hierochuntica - "The Real Rose of Jericho". They are completely different plants. Your plant is alive when putting it in water while the real rose of Jericho is dead when you buy it. It's literally a dead piece of wood

Hi Neil. Thank you. Yours is the best video on the Internet about this beautiful plant not only for your filming skills but also because it shows the plant on an almost natural setting as opposed to people teaching to put the plant in a bowl of water and leave it there.
I wanted to know if you could share what was the substrate made of as I would like to try to replicate your luck with the seedlings but I must make a note that those baby plants are not the same species as this fern cannot produce flowers but spores.
Thank you and God bless you. 🙏❤️🙏

I finally know the name of the plant that I have had for about five years now thanks to you. I had bought this little plant at steins years ago back when I was in middle school, so I threw out the box without thinking, never finding the name of it. Now though, I finally know what my little guy is called and the relief you have just given me, you have no idea. I'm pretty sure they had just advertised it as a mini tumble weed that needed water now and again, but I still wanted to know it's name since i've had this little guy for so long, and the wonder increased more and more thanks to my horticulture class I am taking this semester. Thank you so much! :)

Hi, was it in controlled environment or in an open desert? If it was in desert, why the light not moving, or did you filmed only in night. Could you do some behind the scenes pictures/video?

    • @NeilBromhall1
      @NeilBromhall1  4 роки тому +1

Hi Saqib, I filmed the sequence in my studio under controlled conditions. I built the set to look like a desert. The sand was brought back from the desert to match the previous filming.

They are not. Ferns produce spores instead of flowers. Flowers (and the need for polinization) are ages more advanced mechanism than the old Jurassic spores one.

This is one of the coolest videos have ever seen of anything ever. How many rose of Jericho do you think a person should have to try to get seedlings? I figure in good weather I could water them and let them sit on a nice bed of potting soil and let the insects visit them. Do you think it would work?

@ HomoBotanicus Surely the plant shown is Anastatica heirucuntica which is a flowering plant and from Africa, unlike the spikemoss Selaginella lepidophylla which looks completely different and is not from Africa. I would have expected a botanist to know this.
