    I’ve binge watched your videos on cooling apparatuses this morning! They all work. Which has been your favorite? I will tackle making one in the next couple of days! Thank you so much as your videos start the ideas flowing.

      hi. that's great! thanks for watching! yep, i never post anything that doesn't work (you can count on that). in the 13 years i've been making videos i've only had to abandon 23 projects (meaning that they didn't work good enough so i never posted them). with regard to your question about my favorite air cooler; i don't really have a favorite one. they all have their pluses and minuses, so it mainly depends on your individual situation. these days i'm loving the indirect evap coolers and i really like the cold-water based radiator cooling systems i made back in summer of 2021. if you haven't seen those 4 vids they are definitely worth watching. they show how to convert regular fans (of all sizes) to fans that blow cold air. it's easy and they are very effective. if interested, here's the links (listed in the order that i posted them)

      @Weirdo Wolf studio they all have their pluses and minuses so i can't pick a best one. for shear raw power it's the ones with the fat copper radiators, for ease of construction it's probably the ice chest or bucket ice based units. the aluminum radiator ones work very well too. in terms of the evap coolers i like the cube ones because you can pack a lot of cooling into a small space. the ones made with box fans are great too (and super powerful)

    What do you think is the best compact 12 volt set up (of your many models) for a small RV where adding cold water isn't always possible. It's purpose is to keep the current AC temp from driving the vehicle somewhat the same while I go into a store for instance. Basically it's so I can go into a store while my dog stays in the vehicle (we will backup with a cellular temp gauge btw aka Waggle). I'm thinking the 5 gallon bucket version which I can store in my shower and dump water as needed to travel?

    im in florida, I built a unit similar to the 2nd one you showed, it did give off cool air but it also condensed the warm humid air on the cools quickly filling a container so the next attempt needs a drain

    Im thinking of using a inline fan ...
    Just curious have you used one and if you have noticed a major differnce in different fans used ??

    • @desertsun02
      @desertsun02  Рік тому

      hi. i've been looking at a couple of inline duct fans. i think that would be a good idea. main thing with the fan is that is has enough power, most work pretty well though.

    Love your videos. Tons of great ideas, almost too much! I really could use a small, personal, battery operated cooler that can move around cars. Bought a Ryobi bucket top misting fan but that just drenches me. However, it does have a decent run time with a small water pump and that gots me thinking. It's form is a bit bulky and not good for an evap setup but... You know where I'm going with this!

    does the temperature of the water make any difference so if you feed in cold vs room temperature water

    • @desertsun02
      @desertsun02  2 роки тому

      hi. generally speaking, the temp of the water doesn't make any difference. the water temp will quickly move toward the evap temp and will more or less stabilize. these units actually chill the water as the air is pulled through the pad. if you use ice as well then you can get even cooler air temps for a little while.

    Any idea how much electricity is being used for the indirect evaporator method? Asking for off grid applications.

    • @desertsun02
      @desertsun02  2 роки тому +1

      hi there. the smaller indirect unit draws 39 watts in total and the larger indirect unit draws 97 watts in total (with the box fan on low). wattage measured with a kill-a-watt meter. the full vids detail-out the wattage of each component. smaller (39w) setup has a 15-watt pump, a 5-watt pump, a 10-watt fan and a 9-watt fan. larger (97 w) setup has 47-watt fan, a 35-watt fan, and 2 pumps totaling 15 watts

    • @desertsun02
      @desertsun02  2 роки тому +2

      hi there. they work best when the humidity is 60% or under. (larger direct units in the outdoors can work up to 70-75%). this mainly depends on a balance between temp and humidity. look up evap cooling chart to see what to expect.

    Could any of them be modified to use in an older car that has no AC

    • @desertsun02
      @desertsun02  2 роки тому +1

      hi there. sure, i think so. i know in the past you could actually buy cars with evap cooling systems in them. one unit i saw had the cooler pad attached to the sides of the car (near where the wing mirrors are). it was a cylindrical container with an evap pad in it. the faster you drove, the faster the air would go through the pad to cool the air. then the air was directed into the car (near the front window). for ventilation (because they were most certainly direct evap units) you would probably open the back windows a little. sounds like a good video idea

      Hello, i was thinking the same...i am very mechanical oriented, you would probably want Computer fans for small size, it will take some Proper part selection, and you would want it facing you directly. Maybe dashboard modifications, OR make full size unit and strap it down on rear seat.

    • @desertsun02

      hi. in the small tote i'm using a 12v 10 watt "auto expressions" fan. they sell or used to sell those at walmart. it's either a 6" or 7" fan. i think they call them 6" fans. note that if you are looking for them at walmart - they sell them in their auto dept.

    It’d be cool to compare one of those “portable ac” miniature swamp coolers that you can buy against your coolers. I got one at goodwill to fool around with, but it didn’t work in my southern humidity. I’d be curious to see if those can perform in a dry environment.

    • @desertsun02

      hi. those little mini-cube ones they sell are a scam. the problem with doing a comparison video with a commercial product is i don't want those people coming after me (and they might, when i show just how bad those little units are).

    Well done . I see you had few solar panels outside. Were the pumps and fans running off solar power ?

    • @desertsun02
      @desertsun02  2 роки тому

      hi there. the answer to that question is both yes and no. i have both ac and dc pumps and fans (so i mix it up). i sometimes run the units on solar panels and sometimes on AC power. it's pretty cool that you can run the whole system on about 250w of solar panels. i do that often. totally free cooling (excluding the water - but that is only $2.50 for 1000 gallons so it's almost free)
