8:07 I said "internal" when I meant to say "external." To be clear, *external* synths piped into the Circuit Tracks hit a bit late compared to the Circuit's built-in synths.
Have you tested it to make sure it’s the Circuit’s fault? I think you’d need do the same comparison with another synth to be certain. I’d probably also do another test to see where the latency is if it persists. Just record the same sequence twice, once with the external synth audio coming back into the Circuit’s audio inputs and then another with the external synth going direct to your audio interface. If they are in sync when you run the individuals outs to your interface the latency is in the audio signal chain. If they are still out of sync it’s midi latency. May not be worth the hassle of testing though since the difference is so small. I’d just be careful about dinging the Circuit without absolute proof the latency is being introduced there.
Is there some fix for this latency issue? I have bass on synth1, pad on synth2 and microfreak on midi1. When microfreak is turned off then drums, synth1 and synth2 are in sync. When I turn on microfreak the latency can be noticed on the drums, especially on the first bit of the first drum pattern, practically on the beginning of the loop. It is heard like one drum step is played twice or similar.
I've found the reason for the issue I had. It was happening because I had both MIDI In and MIDI Out connected between Circuit Tracks and Microfreak. I've removed the cable coming from the Microfreak MIDI Out and going into Circuit Tracks MIDI In and now everything sounds in sync. Probably both Microfreak and Circuit Tracks were fighting to be master. Ouuu yeah! :)
Your review of the tracks is what made me sell all my csgo items and pick up a circuit tracks and some synths. It changed the way i make music forever.
Your channel introduced me to the Circuit tracks and I’ve found myself using it almost exclusively to control my synth setup. It definitely has its limitations, but i find the limits help my creativity. Parameters definitely help keep me focused. The key thing for me is the workflow. It’s the secret sauce to these devices. If they made a beefed up “pro” version with some quality of life improvements (undo button/function, larger sample times, stereo in/out, the ability to bounce down audio and allocate it to a scene) I would definitely be interested. The main issues I’ve had with these devices stem from the software side of things. It takes an age to transfer anything, the file management can be a pain due to the lack of a screen (the only element I would like a small screen for). In the future, I imagine something like this that links to a phone and allows Bluetooth connectivity, file transfer/import/export etc. something like a faster more intuitive version of components on mobile device platforms like iOS and Android would be awesome, purely for the file/preset management side of things. That said, both these devices are absolutely awesome and they have given me so much fun trying to work out their quirks. Thanks for all the work you put into this channel and keep up the awesome work.
My gripes re the Circuit Rhythm: 1) Limited note resolution (only 24ppq) 2) only one global swing (swing-per-track would've been better) 3) Only line-level inputs (a mic-level input and/or phantom power would've been amazing for field use) 4) Having to use the proprietary Components webware to compile/transfer samples (as opposed to just filling an SD card with wavs and picking them directly on the machine) 5) What's the lifespan of that non-removable internal battery?
For me the Tracks is a 10/10. Bought my Circuit Tracks more than a year ago (Thanks to Gabe) and have been thoroughly enjoying it. I've done around 40 tracks on it even though I don't really have a strong musical background. Tracks has easily the best interface coupled with a very portable design (I want jamming to be as easy and carefree as possible). Most of my time on it is spent jamming on a couch, but I've done also some live performances which can be enriched with external synths. Currently I have the Volca Bass connected to Tracks and it's still easy to carry the two and start jamming when ever and where ever. If you've ever wondered what that banger track from your childhood would sound like with an electronic wibe, then Tracks will let you do that. Remixing good tracks has been my favorite thing to do, and from time to time I get inspired to do some of my own.
Thanks for sharing. What do you use for internal synths? I find I really dont enjoy the synth sounds on the Tracks and I dont want to bother using their software to set that up when I already have good synths that would do the trick. Do you have a soundpack that you recommend?
I've been using my OG circuit with a coule of todlers, and they're really into it! I feel the OG is a really cool device to introduce kids to groovebox workflows. Very colorful and built in/not-too-loud-for little-ears speakers!
It just popped in my mind that I might enjoy some Gabe Miller Circuit stuff, browsed to your channel, and you even provide one of the most comprehensive videos on the device, just a week fresh. Love it
been playing instruments all my life, but just entered the world of music production. the circuit rhythm accompanied by a good introductory tutorial is the perfect gateway in my opinion.
It’s funny you posted this today. I just redid my studio around my Tracks as the new brain of my decent sized studio last night. I just kept resisting this since I have bigger and fancier and more complicated “brains” I could use but honestly the best stuff I make, stuff I don’t overthink and don’t disappear into menu diving while making is usually on the tracks. Also gabe just a quick note to add to your comments. The tracks one and two can be used to send to other gear as well just not processed inside
Circuit tracks is the main work horse of my rig. It’s honestly a better workstation then the op-z and op-1 because of how well it works with other synth. The rhythm is also awesome because it makes working with samples enjoyable.
Great review video. I’m not leaving my Akai Force, but if it didn’t exist, I’ll use a Launchpad Pro mk3 and Circuit tracks. That pair would give you 8 customizable pages, 6 midi tracks, 2 synth tracks, 4 drum tracks, and the effects and chord mode, the ability to save 64 projects on each and recall at anytime. This duo pair up with some hardware synths and drum machines, you’ll have a very powerful setup! Great work!
I am big fan of novation gear, both their grooveboxes and keybed synths. After long years I made it to add the summit to my collection and it is something I was searching for in my entire life. Their long term firmware support is second to none. Watched your videos about circuit and tracks which are exceptionally good also purchased your tracks sound pack (great one you should do more).
I use my Rhythm as a drum machine and a beat chopper. It's really handy and I get a ton of mileage out of samples and phrases I put in. I do think it could've used a small display for keeping track of samples and packs. I can't remember everything I have in every pack I've made. I'm ready for an OS update. There's entire row of pads that could be used for additional grid effects, which I use all the time. Wish I could do time-stretch/pitch shifting. Wish that Components ran on Linux.
I really love the circuit tracks got it last year around this time for my birthday and only had a pocket operator before that. The tracks was kind of a gateway drug for me, and Since then I picked up a Roland JDXI, a minilogue, and recently the microfreak. The tracks works amazingly with all of those. But ... especially the JDXI. The JDXI is a special case because as you mentioned the idea of two grooveboxes together, well these work hand in hand through program switches if you want and you can easily do whole songs that way complete with FX and mixing. It's pretty amazing. I find the one thing that the tracks has but my other gear doesn't is note probability, and random pattern sequencing, microstepping, and even polyrhythm support for non standard beats per bar. You can do things like running 4 against 5 against 6 beats on it, and it takes it in stride. I find this really helpful for making crazy hi hat patterns or mixing in some extra flavor. Great video, Gabe, and thanks for getting me into this workflow. It's been transformative, I may never touch a DAW again.
Been a tracks owner for about 1 month now. I think your take covers just about all the essentials. And your past videos certainly helped push me in this direction! Tbh I really quickly ran into hard limitations from day one, especially with sample playback and "editing." Prepping my own samples in the DAW in length, volume, EQ, peak level, etc to make good-sounding music turned out to be much more laborous than working solely in the box. While sample-flipping brilliantly makes jungle/breakcore beats super easy to do on one drum track doing individual automation on the samples takes a bit of time and care. Even with the latest firmware update, I still run into voice-stealing; putting any amount of unison on one of my patches cuts polyphony to 3 for some reason. Not to mention, the synth engine is not serum or vital, even if it looks pretty slick. Still a large variety of sounds I can make, just not always like I would with plugins. But learning to work with the quirks, I find it to be probably the best compromise of two synths, a midi sequencer, a 4-track sample player, external (both hardware and software!!!) midi controller in a very easy to use UI. Like, there are other hardware pieces that excel better in certain aspects and a DAW is just inifinitely more powerful. But as a flexible centerpiece for connecting between old hardware, DAWs, and everything between, I can't really ask for more until you get to "DAW-in-a-box" gear like the Maschine or MPC One - but even then, those are quite different beasts.
At first, I wanted to get the Circuit Rhythm, but then Roland announced the SP-404 MkII, and I went with that. The sequencer on the SP-404 MkII isn't as good as the Circuit, but it can sample 16 minutes of audio PER PAD, which effectively turns it into a multitrack recorder as well as a killer sampler. I still might get the Rhythm later, as a way to have these two bounce off eachother though...
I use the SP-404 mkII with a Model: Cycles, which is different but some similarities, and holy hell what a match. I think the Tracks would be just as cool and probably more flexible.
They are still great but I was expecting a little more in the way of firmware updates, new features, etc. Been about a year since they last updated either.
I'm not sure what they would add in firmware at this point. What would you suggest? It would be awesome if you had more control over dimming the lights!
Totally. The OG Circuit seemed to receive updates for years, some of which were significant. I’m waiting to see if Novation will do the same with the Tracks.
So for the tracks I’d like to see a basic arp and maybe a mutate preset function. For the rhythm I’d like to see scales, an increase in sample time for packs and control over the grid fx and maybe sequencing grid fx. Both could use updated reverb.
@@smoketoad An arp would be DOPE! So would a chord mode. Also, I wonder if it's possible to change the function of the MIDI tracks through a firmware update or maybe the physical structure limits the changes.
Also thank you Gabe for the video's, helped me decide to get the Rythm, I now understand why you get all starry eyed when talking about it cause its SO good.
The Rhythm is a wonderful device for my way of making music by sequencing patterns with found sounds, sampling different instruments, cinematic foley and integrating that craziness into an MPC One workflow or song idea to later mix in Pro Tools. I can sequence and improvise patterns in the Rhythm as fast as my brain can come up with something.. and then chain all kinds of patterns and projects together live. Thanks to Gabe for the great tutorials of course. The quick workflow is brilliant and complementary to something as deep and screen-centric as the MPC One. I've found the limitations in it great to step out of my comfort zone. It's definitely niche but I hope many more folks start to find it as inspiring as I have, that way Novation can keep on updating it in the future for the niche that find the Rhythm great. Hopefully it doesn't become iterative like cellphones and every other year a new one comes out and the last one is obsolete, that's not great for a guy buying these machines in Colombian Pesos 😩 (But great for Novation of course) Still, future new version or not I'll keep this one forever
@@ET2carbon You’re half right, the intended use of Foley, like recorded performances of footsteps and doorknobs, is primarily for use in sound design for film, tv, and it’s many derivatives. With that in mind cinematic foley or cinema foley in my field is short hand for excellent quality foley effect libraries or self recorded effects. My main profession is as a sound designer and mixer for film and TV for the last 15 years so I know this first hand. I make music with sequenced footsteps and doorknobs because I know a lot about it and it’s quite inspiring to create or layer organic recordings with electronic or live instruments. For example low passed door slams make great kicks, a constant struggle with a doorknob with a bit of dotted 8th delay might work as a percussion element, Pitch shifted footsteps can serve as a hi hats with a bit of swing etc.. the playground is infinite. A great example of Foley blending from film to percussion and big orchestration is Bjork’s Selmasongs from the film Dancer in the Dark. Anybody interested in downloading good startup libraries to experiment in music or good old sound design might want to Google GDC Soniss.
@@edgarcortes you're talking about sound design and sound effects or synthesis. Foley was the guy who Incorporated the acoustic and close mic pickup of objects that create sounds organically for later synchronization to video. I know what you were trying to say but Foley is one thing avr one thing only. People have careers around that process and its tough I think we should give them their credit for their craft
If an updated Circuit Rhythm could have just 2 or 3 stereo tracks then you could pan your individual drum parts, then resample them as a stereo track, and maybe one more track for a wide pad.
@@80iesDude45 Mine also broke, but I had to pay $140 to get a new one. I was honest and told them it was my fault! I used the wrong voltage plug and blew it out.😳
What about updates. I freakin love this thing but they wont update it. Every other device updates on the regular. But the circuit tracks or rhythm have done no updates. Did novation drop support? Whats the deal????
This is what a lot of people are wondering…why have Novation not released any updates? The SD card compatibility issue should have been fixed immediately for a start. It’s like they just gave up.
After owning a EMX, an Mpc Live, an Electribe 2 Sampler, and an Octatrack I really hold my o.g. Circuit in high regard. this thing does a lot of things that those others can't or does it easier.
Just did my first live set ever this week, using basically the setup I have on my channel (Circuit Tracks + MicroFreak + Dreadbox) and I fell in love with it for a second time. The Circuit is incredibly flexible, capable and most of all fun to use. The big plus for performance is its ability to change project on the fly with no latency what so ever (that is, unfortunately, only if you're using the Circuit's internal memory and not an SD card) while making a seamless set. Does any elektron gear have this feature as well, I wonder ?
Gabe, I just sent you an email thanking you for all your videos that have helped me narrow my groovebox search down to a final choice ....... And then I saw the Polyend Play. Dang it, why is this so difficult? Never thought I would ever complain about being confused by multiple choice ....
As a musician who never used a 'groove box' before this was released, The Tracks is very impressive. It is similar to strumming an acoustic guitar or tinkering with a piano just to get a few ideas on a scratchpad. I bought one then subsequently subscribed to this channel as a result of the depth of review and the demonstrations here. A substantial amount of creativity can be drawn from this box despite its limitations.
Great overview video. As far as the latency with the Volca FM, I really wouldn’t have noticed it if you hadn’t pointed it out and showed it with the waveforms it was so minimal in my opinion.
I still lament the loss of nudge, but the tracks has been a mostly worthy successor to my original circuit. Every new groovebox I try just doesn't do for me what the circuits do. That's actually kind of a shame because there's a lot that these other devices bring to the table. I've said it elsewhere, but there are two additions to the circuit line I would love to see: 1. Circuit Pro - This one feels oncious. A somewhat larger, more versatile; the mc-707 to the mc-101 or the tr-8s to the tr-6s. In particular I'd love individual outs, the full feature-set of the tracks and rhythm (nudge too pls). Audio interface, USB audio out/in, etc. Even if it's more of a studio tool, the workflow/philosophy behind the circuit line is worthy of it. Maybe toss in some generative/algorithmic features too. See the Polyend Play or Squarp Hapax for some circuit influenced takes that could feed back into the circuit 2. Circuit Effects - This one is probably more niche. I use the tracks often just as an effects processor for 4 desktop synths (muting the internal synths) to leverage the side chain, delay, reverb, etc. I did this with the rhythm too until I sold it. This would be that same idea but amped up. I'm torn on whether it should have the synth engine or sample playing, but if they leaned into the effects and had many different inputs and outputs with midi control for automating maybe 4-8 distinct digital effects (4 if we get synths/sample playing, 8 otherwise) that could be layered in a chain this would be amazing. Probably just toss in the audio interface capability here too. All these DAWless setups tend to suffer with effects. This would be basically an all-in-one "table of random pedals" replacement with MIDI automation.
I've been using the Rhythm for a year and it's probably the most inspiring tool I own for music. I do however feel the limitations of mono samples and short sample time. If they made a new Circuit Rhythm 'plus' with the only upgrades being stereo samples and way longer sample times, it would be an absolute beast. Literally only those two things hold it back from being amazing. Otherwise it's a fun tool for getting out some ideas.
Hi Gabe, like your videos a lot. Being considered as a Novation Circuit Guru, maybe you can answer this question on Circuit Tracks that I would like to buy (depending on your answer 🙂 ). I could't find any reference to this on the manuals, so here it goes: How to change the tunning from 440.00 Hz to something else on the Synths tracks? Many thanks ! Cheers
I have paired my Tracks with a behringer TD-3 with really nice results. Way easier to try out different patterns, and the reverb and delay does magic to the saw on the td-3. The Td-3 is clunky in almost every aspect, but you can switch sync source super easy if you want to use it's internal sequencer. I have one midi channel on the tracks mapped to a korg Nts-1, wich gives me ready access to most of the Nts parameters, including the effects section. Awesome!
Love your Novation Circuits posts, Gabe. You were the main reason for me purchasing the Circuit Tracks one and it's the 'center' of my studio now. My main issue with the Tracks is recalling presets. I do a lot of live looping, and will just switch preset sounds until I find something I like. Problem is recalling that at a later point. Without any naming, LED screen, or some other way to find the preset/sound again, it's damn near impossible. Am I missing something here or have you run into the same issue? I love the workflow, but finding myself searching and searching to find the sound I used 15 minutes ago...
Thank you for your videos! A question: is it possible to back up the project I made? Moving all the info in a backup so I can have more space but without losing my previous job...?? Thank you!
I think this device is great. Ease of use is unmatched which it very important. My setup is made of a Syntakt which is Sync Master and is mainly used for kick, bass, drums, Analog Synth, Circuit Track play the role of sample player, loop and single shots, Midi controller/sequencer for the TD-3 and of course the 2 embedded Mini Nova are so cool to have. My Sound chain is TD 3 goes into Syntakt In and Syntakt goes into the Circuit Tracks. I very Happy with the Circuit Tracks it fits perfectly in my setup. I think I'll soon add the Volca Sample 2 because sample mangling is missing in my setup.
you talk about the latency. But does the latency also occur when you do not feed external audio signal back in the Tracks, but have them parallel connected to mixer/audio interface? I have the hunch that midi isnt causing the latency, but the audio engine in the tracks handling the fx processing and sidechaining, does.
I definitely think it's the audio engine in the Tracks rather than its midi output. Probably a limitation of the hardware used, I'm not sure how solvable it is, it's just something people should know about going in.
It’s the second synth I’ve bought. I haven’t been that careful with it. Recently plugged the micro freak into it. Just with the audio cable. It works fine through midi one. Going to eventually connect through midi. It seems like a good machine to me. Im a drummer and found the. Sequencer on my Volca sample near impossible. Once I got the hang of the tracks. I’m making drum beats like I would on a kit. But I’m no expert or qualified user. Love your channel and reviews.
Just got a Rhythm as my first Circuit. After unboxing and playing with it a bit my first impulse was to return it because the workflow was weird to me. But I took some more time, worked through much of the manual and paired it with my BARP 2600 as a little keyboard and sequencer, running the audio back in just as a little headphone mixer and screwing around with the grid effects on it. Next of course I'll be sampling the 2600 and making tracks. And all this on my couch! (doesn't everyone have a 2600 next to their couch?) I loved my MPC2000 back in the day. This gives me much the same joy, but lightweight and dirt cheap. TL;DR keeping it! : )
Great content as always. I’m still on OG, but might grab a Tracks someday. I have a ton of groove boxes, but one more never hurts, lol. This week I’m rocking an old Electribe EM-1... still one of the best. My opinion is the MC 707 is the most complete of the modern groove boxes. The one that surprised me the most was the Elektron Samples... love that thing. I was hardcore on the Mpc for a few years, but on a break from it now, lol.
@@Jason75913 I like the sounds and there are several knobs for real time tweaking. So far it’s always been fun to use. I have the Cycles too which I like, but the sounds are not my everyday thing.
Fully agreed on everything on the tracks. After 8 months with it I simply don't want to use a DAW, I love the workflow. I share the same concerns, the synths being underwhelming, but also I find the list of synths hard to manage, the previews are somehow poor and browsing sounds is confusing. I also hope they give us a software update any day with some quality of life improvements. Otherwise great device!
Hi Gabe, do you think the circuit tracks will get any love in terms of firmware updates? The OG circuit went from zero to hero over the years but Novation seems to be neglecting these
Glad you're digging the videos! I haven't had a chance to look into it and Polyend hasn't hit me up about it, so probably not soon, but maybe eventually.
Just got my Circuit Rhythm and its everything I hoped it would be and more. I dont expect a 400 or 350 atm dollar groove box to include features that grooveboxs twice the price have. I feel like people hating on the circuit rythm want it to have all the bells and whistles a 800 or 900 dollar box would have and that's not the case.
The RS7K, a machine from 21 years ago, has a midi clock adjust knob right on the machine that allows intentional 'mistiming' of individual tracks, both internal and external, but it also has a midi timing clock adjust for latency so that it will send external midi adjusted for latency and then all notes are perfectly matched in time. It's really frustrating to see old gear constantly outshine newer gear in this way. Yeah, sure, new gear has bigger memory, they have more internal simultaneous effects, the synth engines sound cleaner, yada yada, but why are newer machines so bad at MIDI when compared to machines 2 decades older or more?
hmm, i'm suprised that i wasn't subscribed to your channel. I've been Watching your videos like crazy. I just got an OG Novation Circuit and you're right, as a first groove box, is amazing.
Great re-review! I got a question for you. I recently got a Circuit Tracks and a Microfreak becasue of your videos, and I've been having a ton of fun. However, I wasn't 100% on board with the Microfreak, but bit the bullet because it had such good reviews. So, my question for you is: should I stick with the Microfreak, or maybe should I swap it for one of the Roland Boutiques (JU-06A)? I'm into making sythwave for a reference. Thanks for any advise you have.
I have Circuit Rhtym. Thats true that you cant use polyphonic but when you connect it to a polyphonic Synthesizer, it takes multiple notes and you can play polyphonic, which is okay
Since I got a mpc live ii my circuit is collecting dust. And only that because the live ii comes with some interesting synth engines and I have connected my mono synths to that. I have to get back in programming the circuit and use it as a synth module or it is the storage closet for it
How many sounds does it come with in the box? Could you make a full beat on it if you wanted too? And does the Roland mc 101 have more , better sounds?
The built in packs fill every sound slot on both Circuits. You can definitely make full songs with either. The MC-101 has a better synth engine with very good presets. For any of the three devices, you can load in your own stuff, and loading in samples (drums, etc) is pretty easy.
With the rythm I found I was not able to load in almost any sounds I wanted it was so limited in sample size. The sound shaping options were very limited and often sounded bad. In the end it was such an arse to get sounds on to it to play with that I stopped making music.
Hey Gabe, did you try to look at the waveform of the recording, when looking at the delay issue, when you use a full analog external synth instead of a digital one? The delay you have observed might just be the latency of the ADC+DSP+DAC of the Korg digital synth, and not something related to the Circuit Tracks... Those hardware digital boxes work the same way our computers, the processing might have its own latency, and then you have the digital interface internal in to out + out to in latencies, and depending on the settings, it might add around 10-40 ms of audible delay, which can become very upsetting if you cascade several of them in a row... But in the case of a full analog audio path, you don't have this issue at all.
I've observed it on multiple synths, so I'm pretty sure it's a Circuit issue, but I'll try to double check with an analog synth whenever I get around to it.
I agree with everything you said about how you feel about it. Build quality, battery, sleekness, feel, workflow . But like you said, the biggest thing for me that's a let down is the sounds. So limited, even buying packs for it. I wish this had a baby with the Roland MC101
Grab a Decksaver if you want to throw it in a backpack without fear! They're fitted polycarbonate covers that don't add much size that are meant to act as a dust cover, but they're rigid and protect all the controls when you throw it in a bag. Thomann always has the best price on them--for some reason they can sell them for half the price of everywhere else.
I’m an owner of the Circuit Tracks and I think it’s the best Groovebox on its segment. There are 3 little aspects I would like an improvement: 1) Synth quality. It sounds good but not excellent, sometimes they sound a quite cheap and I cannot find a sound WOW. 2) Lack of an arpeggiator, it can be a very high improvement. 3) Updates: after an year Novation didn’t made any major software update including dedicated sound packages. Despite these point considering it’s price (400 €) and it’s high portability (you can make music literally everywhere) it’s impossible to find better. You don’t feel the need of a screen, so you can focus on music. The workflow is fluid, you can create different scenes for the song build up, there are automation on sound parameters and the “mutate” function is an incredible creativity trick to generate new musical ideas 😍
I am deciding on picking up a circuit tracks thanks to your videos! I am wondering, could I control the synth tracks by using a midi keyboard? (not usb midi)
all your example sounds are just amazing lol I started music production a few years ago -- don't get this wrong, I am still absolutely beginner -- until I sumbled upon hardware synths. I got an electribe 2 and although I like it I think it slowed me down a little. I am considering selling all my hardware and keep only the microfreak and get a circuit instead of the E2. My current setup is the Electribe 2, Microfreak + NTS1 to complement it with effects, Volca Bass and Volca Modular. This setup for me is currently very unproductive, especially with the E2 as the brain, so maybe simplifying the whole thing and having the Circuit as the brain and the Microfreak, will make me get back to it? :)
Hey sorry to bother, but I've been wanting to make beats lately and was probably gonna start with a circuit tracks. Was wondering what all I need to get started with it? I have a lap top but nothing else lol. Just a noob here
@@benkey618 hey so I ended up not getting the tracks in the end I got an Elektron syntakt but I realize this is very out of budget especially for a beginner. I've watched so many videos about the circuit before making my mind I feel I properly learned how to use it even without having one, especially with the great content from this channel. I think you can go a very long way with it but it may take some learning how to use the hardware itself before learning how to make beats, it's probably still the best entry level choice out there. I started my journey with DAWs on my laptop too and some music production classes from udemy. You can use LMMS to get started it's decent enough for a free DAW but you will not record external audio etc but it's good to get started with scales chords and sequencing, if you decide to not get a circuit tracks instead.
Every time I use my circuit rhythm something makes me wish it had a display - even a small one. Sample management on it is a disaster, remembering which effects are where, etc. I end up using my OP-Z a lot more, even though I like the pads on the rhythm much more. The OP-Z feels like a complete music making device, while the Rhythm feels like an 'almost' device. I also have trouble getting used to only single voices - chords are a no go unless you sample them and then good luck remembering where they are on the pads. It's also a big boy. I can pack the OP-Z, and ipad, and a Keith Mcmillan Qunexus and in about the same amount of space, and I'm not worried about knobs getting wrecked like the Circuit. Pretty sure will be selling the rhythm in 2022. PS "the start button" issue you have is not ok - thats something you should have taken up with the manufacturer while it was still in warranty. That's waaaay to early for this device to be having issues with its buttons.
Sound engine is fine but 8 hit-or-miss macros are hard to operate. Have OG circuit and use synth parts mostly as a sequencer with sub synth layer beneath.
My only gripes re the Circuit Tracks are: 1) Low note resolution (it's only 24ppq) 2) Only one send delay preset and one send reverb per project 3) A hardwired internal battery with a finite lifespan. 4) No audio-over-usb output 5) Swing is global (would have prefered per-track) Other than that, it's great.
12:10 OK, you "like" it.....But the real important question is....Would you have bought it and not be disappointed?? Since Novation gave them to you, this seems a legit question.
i feel these two are what the electribe 2s could have been. instead of doing the same machine 2 times with different firmware loaded on to it and as such both feel compromised, just do two different devices that do well what they're supposed to do
Almost impossible to pick lol. Probably MPC One and MicroFreak (if that was the only gear I was allowed to have ever), but I would be very sad to lose the other stuff.
Novation Circuit Tracks are a great value for under $500 but I don't dig the mono samples. If you spend a bit more: Roland SP-404MKII, Roland MC707, Akai Force, Maschine Plus and MPC Live 2 are much better options albeit more of a learning curve.
Nice shirt, The Midnight is an awesome band, I love their album Endless Summer and listened to it constantly back when I binged Stranger Things. And I hope I get to see them live, especially because they have live saxophone.
I’ve heard some amazing tunes done on what is essentially a $300 device. You yourself have made great tracks. There is enough there unless you have a Drake / Kanye type deal, it’s hardly a life changing choice.
imo the biggest problem with the Circuit (og and tracks) is the synth engine. the wavetables are very tweakable in software, but the basic oscillator/filter sounds are pretty bad overall. I think it's time Novation break out of the budget segment and go head to head with Akai and Elektron: Rhythm's sampler, Peak's synth engine, with a workflow that can make whole songs. All this along with decent DAW export.
Peak isn't digital, but Mininova is and sounds really great, so that with a sampler and all in a more upscale groovebox format. They do need to work on post FX, that's not a strength of their products, it's all they are missing.
@@Jason75913 my understanding is that Peak IS digital, using high resolution FPGA-based oscillators. The filter and distortion circuit are analog, the rest is digital.
@@sugarhigh4242 the oscillators and post FX are the only digital parts, the rest is pure analogue also, what the FPGA does is impractical to emulate on whatever CPU a groovebox would get, too expensive
All of the Rhythm's tracks function like the Tracks's drum tracks, but can do more (play samples across a keyboard, have extra sound shaping options, and do sample chopping).
i started off with the OG, got a tracks for free, then was mind raped by the internet into the mpc game, whih yea i still love the mpc, even went n got a tracker from polyend, but it honestly just wasnt for me. I still got the OG plugged into a mixer for quick ideas to come up with, but the "standalone" thing died when i used ableton......I just cant go back
Hahhaa.....trying to buy the sp404mk2 but not having any luck....instraf gonna getvthe rhythm inbthe mean time....so this vid was right on the Mark timing wise
I bought both but sold my Rhythm. Their strength is the sequencer and the workflow it enables. Unfortunately the synths are seriously dated and the lack of a screen makes browsing patches stupidly impractical. These days, you can get seriously good sounds for a small budget. To make it worse, it isn’t possible to save any sound design (using macros) outside the project context, so once you have dialled in a sound you like, you can only reuse that if you copy the project. Surely, at least it should be possible to display the macro position (0-127} so you could take note of it? No USB audio out and no easy way to export your midi projects make these devices almost pointless as a sketch pad, unless you are prepared to manually re-code all your tracks and patterns one by one . The devices are also relatively expensive. For not much more, you can get an MPC One and that just blows away even a combination of the Tracks and Rhythm. I still have the Tracks, but I must admit I haven’t touched it for months. I may use it at some point as part of a live set, for some backing tracks… The Rhythm lasted 2 weeks for me. No time stretching, ridiculously clunky sample management and the same limitations of having no display basically makes this worthless. Now, if they would be sold for around 100€ each, they would be value for money as simple toys. The user interface has overall been very well designed - although it does really need a display - but the devices have so many flaws that I wonder what Novation’s strategy is. There are signs of good product design in parts, but the shortcomings just kill it. A real shame.
It would be interesting to see you explore sequencing and then sampling monosynths on the Rhythm.
(re carrying Circuits in a backpack) I recommend the Decksaver hard covers.
My gripes re the Circuit Rhythm:
1) Limited note resolution (only 24ppq)
2) only one global swing (swing-per-track would've been better)
3) Only line-level inputs (a mic-level input and/or phantom power would've been amazing for field use)
4) Having to use the proprietary Components webware to compile/transfer samples (as opposed to just filling an SD card with wavs and picking them directly on the machine)
5) What's the lifespan of that non-removable internal battery?
@@neonpop80 I really like Isotonik studios packs. I like Techno foundations, but that's more focused on bass than leads. The leads are good though.
I've been using my OG circuit with a coule of todlers, and they're really into it! I feel the OG is a really cool device to introduce kids to groovebox workflows. Very colorful and built in/not-too-loud-for little-ears speakers!
Hehe, that's why I kept my circuit too.
I still love my OG Circuit after several years... However good video as always 😊
How does it work better with external synths?
OP's are also (as the name implies!) Over Priced......
I agree about the small screen. I just think its against the circuit "ethos" so they refuse.
Nice video! It describes pretty well the power of these devices!
I really love the circuit tracks got it last year around this time for my birthday and only had a pocket operator before that. The tracks was kind of a gateway drug for me, and
Since then I picked up a Roland JDXI, a minilogue, and recently the microfreak.
Bought Circuit Tracks due to you. Been freestyling since.
Surprised that not many use it as a live instrument
I keep trying to rotate my Tracks out of my live setup, but I always return to it. It's such a versatile device.
I'd love a beat repeat that would work like with the beatstep pro.
Hopefully it doesn't become iterative like cellphones and every other year a new one comes out and the last one is obsolete, that's not great for a guy buying these machines in Colombian Pesos 😩 (But great for Novation of course)
Still, future new version or not I'll keep this one forever
Foley is not cinematic friend. It's literally footsteps and doorknobs
Nice this has cleared things up for me with the midi tracks ..
Last week my original Circuit broke. Has a lot of use the last years. Debating if I should get a new one or juist use my mc-707. Probably the latter
The Tracks is WELL worth the upgrade in my experience. It's just sick how much more you can do.
Plus you get those 2 midi tracks!
Last year, my Circuit OG broke, so Novation sent me a brandnew TRACKS instead ;-)
@@80iesDude45 nice, I must have not gotten the same generous support person then 😋
But mine was already quite old. I guess about 5 years or so.
@@80iesDude45 Mine also broke, but I had to pay $140 to get a new one. I was honest and told them it was my fault! I used the wrong voltage plug and blew it out.😳
@@treyhudson73 Same here, I took the wrong voltage plug by mistake, fortunately I had a 3 year warranty on the OG ;-)
Loving rhe midnight tee! Also, I am about to get a Circuit Tracks to pair with my microfreak
Do you send the audio from the mikcrofreak in to the circuit tracks? My microfreak is so damn quiet
@@thejenko17 Have you tried augmenting the gain of the preset volume (the path of which is Utility/Preset/Preset Volume on the MicroFreak) ?
great channel--love the music
Gabe, I just sent you an email thanking you for all your videos that have helped me narrow my groovebox search down to a final choice ....... And then I saw the Polyend Play. Dang it, why is this so difficult? Never thought I would ever complain about being confused by multiple choice ....
I'll give it a look in a bit!
I bought mine when it came out and its been my no. 1 since. Used in all of my jams and tracks
I've said it elsewhere, but there are two additions to the circuit line I would love to see:
1. See the Polyend Play or Squarp Hapax for some circuit influenced takes that could feed back into the circuit
Yes! I would totally buy a Circuit Pro.
Thank you!
I recently got the Rhythm and the only thing I *really* wish it had is audio over usb
I’m still waiting for some new firmware updates, one year without any one…
Dude, please, where'd you get the shirt? I love it
It’s the second synth I’ve bought.
Yep the volcas are cute but ime the volca sample and the volca beats are very hard to program well and are not very “jam friendly”
@@baqcasanke when I plug the Volca into the tracks midi channels it sounds noticeably quieter than the micro freak.
(doesn't everyone have a 2600 next to their couch?)
I loved my MPC2000 back in the day.
The Elektron Model:Samples? What is so great about it? It looks awfully simplistic for sample manipulation.
@@Jason75913 I like the sounds and there are several knobs for real time tweaking. So far it’s always been fun to use. I have the Cycles too which I like, but the sounds are not my everyday thing.
I found the model samples to be rather blah, didn’t keep mine too long. But other people make it look so cool 😅 so i’m not hatin’
As a recent Circuit Tracks user my self Xmas present this year Is.....(long pause) the Circuit Rhythm!
Hi Gabe, do you think the circuit tracks will get any love in terms of firmware updates? The OG circuit went from zero to hero over the years but Novation seems to be neglecting these
Hi Gabe and thanks for your videos, great stuff :) What are your thoughts about the new Polyend Play? Any review coming?
For synthwave, I'd say the JU-06a is definitely the go-to over the MicroFreak.
I have to get back in programming the circuit and use it as a synth module or it is the storage closet for it
Yeah fair, the standalone MPCs are beasts. I still like the Circuit for something a little simpler and on the fly.
Volca FM is just DSP->DAC, there is no ADC except for the sync, if I'm not mistaken.
I bought it becouse of you.... and have my fun live jamming channel now.
PS; I'VE NO MUSIC EDUCATION
Mwhaggh-I still love my OG Circuit! :-)
It's still a great device!
I agree with everything you said about how you feel about it. Build quality, battery, sleekness, feel, workflow . But like you said, the biggest thing for me that's a let down is the sounds. So limited, even buying packs for it. I wish this had a baby with the Roland MC101
It's definitely got some jank to it, but it's more versatile than you might think
The Tracks certainly seems underrated. What I like is it's just a lot of FUN. Easy to dive in to.
i still have two of the OG circuits. Maybe I will have to upgrade one of them.
They also have a rigid case from UDG that zips up.
Also, cheap used laptop bags can often fit hardware devices really well. I like to find ones at goodwill.
CAN we get some softupdate thing on rhythm? really hope to have it
Gabe do you ever use the two together? I would love to see more on that.
I second this! I love my tracks machine and am interested in using samples. Thank you Gabe for all your help!! 👏🤙🎶
Tbh I never have, but it's been on the video ideas list for a while so I'll give it a go at some point.
I am deciding on picking up a circuit tracks thanks to your videos! I am wondering, could I control the synth tracks by using a midi keyboard? (not usb midi)
all your example sounds are just amazing lol
I started music production a few years ago -- don't get this wrong, I am still absolutely beginner -- until I sumbled upon hardware synths.
@@BrunoFinger thank you so much!
Are there any other groovebox/midi sequencer hybrids like this?
Just a thought. I think it would be cool if Novation creates additional synth engines for the circuit tracks, so you can switch between them. :)
What about Circuit Tracks/Rhythm +AUM on iOS?
Can anyone clue me in on how to hear my rhythm through speakers and not just headphones?
Fucking love my Tracks. It’s my go to brain as well. That slight desync means nothing to me lmao.
Sound engine is fine but 8 hit-or-miss macros are hard to operate. Have OG circuit and use synth parts mostly as a sequencer with sub synth layer beneath.
My only gripes re the Circuit Tracks are:
1) Low note resolution (it's only 24ppq)
2) Only one send delay preset and one send reverb per project
3) A hardwired internal battery with a finite lifespan.
4) No audio-over-usb output
5) Swing is global (would have prefered per-track)
Other than that, it's great.
10:19 I'm a bit surprised that you wouldn't keep the Akai Force.
That could absolutely change! I still know the MPC better at the moment though.
Hey, do they support stereo samples now? The mono drums were the biggest let down on the OG Circuit. 😭
No, still mono samples on both the Tracks and the Rhythm.
my circuit tracks no longer give me the click what can I do?
12:10 OK, you "like" it.....But the real important question is....Would you have bought it and not be disappointed?? Since Novation gave them to you, this seems a legit question.
Serious answer, yes. If I lost all my gear, I'd happily rebuy the Tracks and possibly the Rhythm too.
i feel these two are what the electribe 2s could have been. instead of doing the same machine 2 times with different firmware loaded on to it and as such both feel compromised, just do two different devices that do well what they're supposed to do
Latency is a very common problem with external midi.
one big plus software works on Chromebooks browser so can use cheap netbooks to load packs.
And if ya had to pick mpc one or tracks and Microfreak verse Juno 06 who win lol ?
Almost impossible to pick lol. Probably MPC One and MicroFreak (if that was the only gear I was allowed to have ever), but I would be very sad to lose the other stuff.
Novation Circuit Tracks are a great value for under $500 but I don't dig the mono samples. If you spend a bit more: Roland SP-404MKII, Roland MC707, Akai Force, Maschine Plus and MPC Live 2 are much better options albeit more of a learning curve.
They need to add more packs. They could at least give us that....
so many packs on Isotonik --- they are very in-expensive and cover all styles of music.
Nice shirt, The Midnight is an awesome band, I love their album Endless Summer and listened to it constantly back when I binged Stranger Things. And I hope I get to see them live, especially because they have live saxophone.
I was lucky enough to see them live in 2019 and yeah they put on a hell of a show.
@@sugarhigh4242 the oscillators and post FX are the only digital parts, the rest is pure analogue
also, what the FPGA does is impractical to emulate on whatever CPU a groovebox would get, too expensive
@@Jason75913 you're arguing with a stranger about hypothetical gear.
Does the Rhythm have the same drum sounds and the Tracks?
All of the Rhythm's tracks function like the Tracks's drum tracks, but can do more (play samples across a keyboard, have extra sound shaping options, and do sample chopping).
@@GabeMillerMusic but does it have the same factory drum samples
I don't think so, although I don't remember for sure. You can load any samples you want into either though.
1:45 ☺️👍🏻
i started off with the OG, got a tracks for free, then was mind raped by the internet into the mpc game, whih yea i still love the mpc, even went n got a tracker from polyend, but it honestly just wasnt for me. I still got the OG plugged into a mixer for quick ideas to come up with, but the "standalone" thing died when i used ableton......I just cant go back
I sold my OG and miss it a lot. :(
Hahhaa.....trying to buy the sp404mk2 but not having any luck....instraf gonna getvthe rhythm inbthe mean time....so this vid was right on the Mark timing wise
I may use it at some point as part of a live set, for some backing tracks…
The Rhythm lasted 2 weeks for me.
