Pedestal Bowl - Problems Of My Own Making! - Wood Turning

- I love turning Walnut but the design of this piece just gave me a really hard time. Also, the wood was really dry so it was difficult to get a clean cut. But, I persevered and I'm very pleased at the final outcome.

Another PhilAnderson masterpiece. So beautiful.
Thank you, Stewart! 😊
Well Phill, I would like to thank you for your encouragement. Being 71 going on 72 has its own learning curve 😅. I'm a Cancer surviver, stroke victim, and Nam Vet. And still kicking. However now nearly as high or as often as I used to. But back to the subject at hand. I cut my first BOWL yesterday 😂😂😂
I'm soo excited I feel 70 again 😅😅!!
I'm pumping stuff out every day, and I am. Sure most of it will make a good fire for someone some day ! 😢😅
You act 🎬 like you don't know what your doing and your unsure of what you have but your movements and strokes Re that of a Master. You are and absolute education and joy to watch. And you continue to frustrate me to death 😂. Thank you for being so kind and patient in you approach to woodworking. GOD BLESS. Lary 😊
We have a lot in common, Lary! I'm glad you are still at it, keeping busy keeps you relevant and alive! 😃
Absolute masterpiece. My wife says it looks like David's golden cup.
Cool! Thank you! 😃
For something that gave you a hard time you made it look so easy. This is one Beautiful piece of work.
Thank you very much, Hubert! 😊
Tuder style goblet on a stand! Unique! 💕👏👏👏👏👏👏🙏🇬🇧
Well, OK then! 😃
very beautiful .....again you ...you did again!!! 👍👍👍👍👍
Thank you very much, Jack! I appreciate your comment!
I love when you say"mask and face shield on". Sounds like a super hero!
LOL! That's me! 😊
This is quite a piece. The roundness and the raggedness compliment each other very well.
Glad you like it, thank you!
It looks as if it should be a trophy. It looks good. You always seem to be able to pull something out of the hat
Thank you so much, Norma!
It's a cup and saucer Phil. And a beautiful piece of art it is. I truly enjoy your presentation.
Awesome, thank you, Gerald! Lots of suggestions on this one. I love yours!
Outstanding pedestal bowl…..definitely my next project.
Adding my own addition to the woodturners motto “ If it holds soup it’s a bowl, if it doesn’t it’s art ….and if it’s neither, it’s kindling” from up here in the great white north.
Thanks for your skill and motivation Phil.
Thank you, Bill! 😊
Just call it AWESOME Phil!
Awesome it is, David! Thank you!
my boys and I think that's a trophy... definitely a winner... I have loved everything I have watched you make... you're VERY talented
Thanks so much, Celia!! 😊
Wow so many high's in that turning what an End product.. A name for your piece.... "The Magician's Floating Ball" really beautiful xxx
Thank you, Jimmy!
This is an older piece but I just found it and have to say it’s magnificent! It was very enjoyable to watch and I love that you left the bark on the outside of the bowl itself which makes it all the more special. Thanks for sharing! Barbara
Thank you, Barbara! My daughter claimed it immediately but, I told her she will have to wait because I like looking at it, too! 😊
Walnut is such elegant wood. That really looks great
😊
Well done, Mr Phil.
Thank you very much, Mark!
That is absolutely georgous. You are a true inspiration Phil.
Thank you, Dwaine! 😊
Don't know what to call it except gorgeous.
That works, thanks! 😊
Whatever you decide to call it be sure to include the words "beautiful work"!!! 🙂
Haha, Ok thanks, Mary! 😊
Love walnut. Thanks. Very nice.
Me too! Thank you, John!
You're the man, Phil. Great job. I like the pedestal bowl thingy
Cool, thanks, Garth!
I call it..... Beautiful!!
Thank you, Rob! Cheers!
What a great idea 👍
Glad you think so! Thank you!
Don’t know how I missed this video but love that shape, filed in my memory vault as long as I can remember the combination
Thank you, I'm glad you like it and hope you get the opportunity to try one!
I'd call it a hollow form with base. Whatever you call it I think it is super cool. Loved the process.
😊
Don't know what you'd call it but outstandingly beautiful.👍
That works for me, Tom, thank you!
HI Phil that turned into a beauty.
Thank you very much, Manjit!
That is a work of Art Phil ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Thanks, Vini! 😊
Gorgeous. I'd just call it ornamental.
That works, Pauline. Thank you! 😊
I like what one turner said,"If it can hold soup it's a bowl. If it can't, it's art!"
I will agree with that, Rick!
A pedestal bowl just so beautiful
There’s a cute response. I’m a beginner at Woodturning so that’s what I’m gonna tell my husband.
Phil you never fail too amaze me find job and beautiful
Ok... it resembles an ice cream dish but... you better only use hard-serve ice cream in it and eat it fast. Looks terrific Phil!
Good call, Russ! 😃 Thank you!
Yet another absolutely GORGEOUS piece of art. Absolutely LOVE it. You get a solid 10 out 5 💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜
Wow, thank you, J'Lyssa! 😊 My daughter felt the same way and claimed it. LOL!
Unique and cool! Worth it, Bark inclusion is fantastic!
Thank you, Louis!
If you put a light in it you could call it a bowl-o-lantern! Lol awesome job.
😊
Thank you for showing me and others that a piece of wood to create such beauty.
👏👏👏🤩🤩🤗
Thank you, Zydryne! Cheers! 😊
Trophy cup, I like it
I'm glad you like it, Ron, thank you!
Super cool Phil.
Thank you so much, Jack!
I would call it a unique glass of wine, very nice! Beautiful wood.
Thank you very much, Yossi!
Beautiful work Phil
Thank you! 😅 Cheers!
Really beautiful work. You are a master of wood. The color of the Walnut is stunning.
Thank you very much! 😊
Beautiful piece, Phil. Your talent is amazing! 👍👍👍
Take care,
.....Gord
You are too kind, Gord! I'm loving the Cheezies and Coke! We are in Phase 2. Haircut, here I come!
Phil
Cheezies and Coke!! Sounds like a great idea for this evening! Glad you’re enjoying them! 👍👍😃
Very nice love that bark inclusion Phil 👍
😊
That is one of my favorites of yours. Love walnut.
Mine too, Jim. Thank you! 😊
work of a pro Phil very nice piece of art or a fruit bowl
Thank you very much, Ian!
Thank You Phil....I also expected that Black Walnut to be much harder...perhaps just the heart wood ?...Glad the bark stayed on. Very nice bark and grain. Black Walnut is just beautiful when finished. Nice nub removal Phil, I like the closeup. Closer the better. Spooky when it pops off in closeup, ha....It's an M&M candy dish and the bark holes can tell you when it's getting low & needs a re-Phil, ha.....TM
Thank you for sharing this piece, Tuffy! I missed my guess of type.
Hahahaha! You've got me laughing already this morning, Tuffy! 😃
You are truely a genious!😀👍🏼
Wonderful piece.
Well, I don't know about all that, Lars, but I'm glad you like it. Thank you! 😅
Hi Phil...really nice bowl thing ...great finish and I love the bark... take care...All the best.....Andy
Howdy, Andy! Thank you!
I like it, Phil. I was expecting it to become 2 parts as it wobbled, but I'm glad it didn't. A nice piece.
Thank you, Richard! 😊
A really nice catch all.
I wood really like to have that. Do you sell them.
I would like to sell them, Don, but I never have. I simply don't have the time for packing and shipping and still keep my channel going. Thank you for asking!
I like it Phil! I like all your turnings but I don't know what to call it either. I've learned a lot from you. Thanks, Gil
Thank you very much, Gil! I appreciate you taking your time each week to watch and comment! 😃
Uniquely beautiful!
Thank you, Linda! Cheers!
What a gorgeous " What do you call it " ! Love it !
Thank you, Jon! Cheers! 😊
I've said it once and I'll say it again... You Scare Me! Lol! You are the only turner I've seen to actually turn a chunk of Wood that in all theory,` is not Attached to the lathe! I'm All tensed up know it is going to go flying and praying it doesn't knock you in the head! But of course it doesn't because you are the Wood Whisperer! : D That should be called ``A Scary Bowl" LOL! But I do love it! You could put a battery powered Votive candle inside! That would make a gorgeous pattern through those small openings! . It could be an M&M bowl, a peanut bowl... etc... spare change! But I'll just call it Gorgeous! :D Continue to stay safe and well Kind Sir! Have a Great and Blessed Week!
LOL! You really made me laugh, GP! I imagined myself, chisel in hand, chasing a spinning, floating piece of wood about the shop! 😅 I'm so glad you love this piece. I actually tried a couple small LED lights I have but they shine straight up. Sooo, I got on Amazon and have 24 short little lights on their way! If they work, I'll try to remember to show it on a video. Thank you for such an uplifting comment. I needed that!
Phil
@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop I hope they work! Thanks for your kind words! Look forward to everything you create at Shady Acres! Have a Great week attend Take Care!
Phil, You are so unexpectable woodturner 😲 This idea with chuck on faith was totaly crazy in good meaning 😀 Beautiful work 👌 Thank You for showing to us Yours sanding disc 👍
All the best my friend.
Rav.
Thank you very much, Rav! Well, when you think about it, with a wide base setting on the front of the jaws and a good center point, it just doesn't seem like it could come out. And, it didn't! LOL! Thank you for watching and commenting, Rav!
That absolutely beautiful! I’ll tell you my wife would put a votive candle in it. Even a battery operated votive candle. The light would shine through the holes onto the wall and look really nice.
Great idea, Chuck, thanks! 😊
Very nice Phil...You did a fine job
Thank you kindly, Steve, I appreciate that!
I love it Phil...a fixed pot ? Maybe. The Walnut looks amazing. Thanks for showing. Stay Safe. Jules, Droitwich, England
Could be, Jules. Thank you! 😃
Really beautiful. I'm getting walnut tree from my daughter some time this winter and I want to make her 2 bowls, 1 end grain and 1 natural live edge and a vase. Thank you for the allowing us to pick up on your technique. I appreciate it.
Wonderful, Roger, enjoy the Walnut! 😊
I love it Phil always great watching ur turns
Thank you, Jim! 😊
Beautiful Phil great job
😊
Well that sure is an unconventional piece of work. I like it! Kinda shows the before and after in one piece. Well done!
Thank you very much, Ray! 😊
Wonderful piece Sir !!!!!!! Call it Awesome !!!!!!
Glad you like it! 😊
Wow. I am at a loss for words. Just what is that? Two things I do know it is. 1) It is interesting! The shape, the bark on the INSIDE, the base! 2) It is beautiful. You always seem to find the best that is hiding in the wood.?
Wow, thank you, James! 😅
Very pretty. I have a nice piece of cherry. Now I know what I'm going to do with it.
Go for it, Nathan! Just not too thin in the middle! LOL!
4:46 that’s what she said! The piece is whatever you say it is. You made it. I’d say it’s art.
Thank you, Troy!
Another beaut, Phil! I don't care what you call it as long as it isn't "firewood". LOL
Billy
Thanks a bunch, Billy! Glad you like it! It's getting to where I don't even know what firewood is! LOL!
What it is is a work of art
Thank you for that, Pamela!
That was a challenge I think beautiful piece though great job phil
Yes it was, Daemon, but it worked out. I'm so glad you like it, thank you for watching! 😅
I really like this one. I didn't think I would, but when all the holes appeared in the bark, it made it really neat. I like the color of this wood too, though it doesn't have the wild pinks and greens you get with others.
😊
Well I came in to take a break from the beast I am working on.. Saw your video and it said Problems...well I have to play it again because I did not see any. Yeah it was a small diameter but had enough holding it with your light touch with the gouge to get it done. A real beauty Phil!
I did pause the video when you mentioned Sand-O-Flex and Ebay. I found one for $21.00 and it is the same size as my other. Now it will be easier to use because there will be less grit changing.
After watching you turn I feel much better and best get back to my own problems in the making..lol
Take care my friend,
Gary
That's a bargain for the Sand O Flex, Gary! Less grit changing is always a good thing. Thank you, buddy!
Well it was even a better deal. For some reason the payment did not go through but it showed I was interested. I got a counter offer for $19.00 even though I tried to pay for it at $21.
Well you know me...not going to pass up a bargain..lol
Looks Great
Thank you, Paul! 😃
Yes I agree to it being art first then an emerging goblet. great video. Keep turning.
Thank you, Ed! Cheers!
Its beautiful! Love your work!
Glad you enjoy it, Linda! Thank you!
It's a holey brandy snifter! Spalted English walnut is my guess-- explains the tear out and light color. Beautiful grain and a pleasing shape. Looks as though it will draw the hand to it, to touch and feel. To me, when someone is drawn in that way to one of my pieces, it's the very best compliment I can imagine! No speech is necessary. That one's got it! 👆
Agreed, Dave, the highest complement is when they want to touch it. Hey, one more day, buddy! 😃
@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop Tomorrow, tomorrow, I love you, tomorrow! 😁 Hmm, there oughta be a song..... oh. 😏😉
Absolutely stunning pedestal bowl Mr. Phil
Thank you very much, Donald!
It's a platform bowl. It is also a beautiful. You make the most unique bowls and art. Love your work. ❤ 🙃
Thank you so much 😊
Beautiful!
Thank you, Tom! Cheers!
Awesome piece of work!
Thank you kindly, Stuart!
A work of wood art, lovely piece. Greetings from Tasmania Australia.👍😁🇦🇺🦘
Morning phil hope ya well yet gain a wonderful bit amazing , your work is unbeatable the best take care kirk 👍
Morning, Kirk. Thank you so much, stay safe!
Beautiful. As always
Thank you so much 😊
This would make a beautiful base/vase for a floral arrangement. It has enough character to inspire creativity, but it is simple enough not to take too much attention from the arrangement.
If a larger flower arrangement is desired, it has enough weight on the bottom to balance it visually and bring the focus to the flowers on top. If a smaller arrangement is desired, the flowers would bring out the natural beauty of the wooden piece extremely well.
If I were a florist, I would snatch this up in a heartbeat. Very well done :)
I know nothing about flower arranging, Christina, but when I brought this in the house I said to myself, "that would make a great vase for flower arranging." HA! We are on the same wavelength! Thank you so much!
I agree! It would make quite a Beautiful floral arrangement! Especially for his Darling wife! You know... Mama being happy and All! LOL!
We have a lens and computer screen protecting us from the flying bark...great result lovely pedestal bowl cool
Hey, I hadn't thought of that, Les. LOL! Thank you!
I'm going with an ornamental vase. I like it very much. You and I have very similar taste in pieces.
Wonderful, John! Thank you!
Awesome turning!
Thank you, Barb! Cheers!
Nice piece Phil, whatever you call it, Its beautiful. See ya in the next one.
Right on, Scott!
This one is really cool. It makes me think of a small fishbowl and so of the county fairs from back home. Seemed like every 5th kid was walking around with a fish in a bag of water from the ping pong ball toss game. I never did win one, so this kind of fishbowl seems perfect for no fish! haha
I remember those games and bags of fish, too! 😊
Now that is a type of piece I would like to be able to make. It is absolutely gorgeous. I bet it went quick.
Thank you, Lynda! 😊 It's just setting right over there>
@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop really? What do I need to do to get it sent to me?
@@lyndaowen2154 You need to knock on my door. LOL! I can't sell anything because there is no time for packing and shipping. Maybe one day I'll have a helper. Until then, I have a really big collection! 😊
@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop well dang I’m all the way down here in Texas so it would be a little hard for me and my husband knock on y’all’s door. But I would if I could.
That’s really nice.
Thank you very much! 😅
Good job Phil, Your a humble man. I do enjoy watching. I do the same, just a bit of an idea and then start turning..Don't sell your self short you are very creative.
Thank you, Barry!
Love it Phil, it was hard work but I think it was real worth it . I think it's my favourite thing so far. Keep them coming mate .🤛🤛🤛
Glad you enjoyed it, Dave, thanks! 😊
Beautiful!👍🏻👍🏻
Thank you, James! 😊
Looks like a goblet! Nice peice

You hit it out of the park again! I vote for emerging.
Thank you very much, Mark!
Congrats to a tenacious and daring emerging goblet straight from the middle ages!...
Yeah, I guess it does kind of look like that, Rob. Thank you!
Awesome piece and craftsmanship bud
I so appreciate that, Tony, thank you! 😊
