I used to live on Guam from December, 1967 - March, 1970. I can imagine what the soldiers had to deal with in the jungles. On Guam, you could step 5 feet into the brush and disappear. There was still a Japanese soldier hiding out on Guam until 1974 and an American soldier, George Tweed, hid out on Guam from the initial invasion by the Japanese in WWII until he was rescued on the eve of the re-taking of the island from the Japanese. There was another Japanese soldier who was captured in 1975 in the Philippines. That was the last one they found. Burning and defoliating the jungles is the only way to get a view of where your target is. That was the reason they used Agent Orange and Napalm.
Some of those tramps were called "souvenirs" since the soldier cant take them off and as to be carried away with the trap attached to his body. When I asked him about his funny looking boots he said that his brother just returned from Vietnam and to took them off of a dead enemy soldier. Trivia: The tunnels that were built during the the Vietnam War were purposely built small enough so the Americans had difficulty fitting through. Further, the width of the tunnels were only wide enough for an AK-47 to turn in the opposite direction. This meant that a GI could not turn his M16 rifle around if he was ambushed from behind.

Yeah, using these so called tunnel documentaries to paint american propaganda with rainbow. How about being more specific and accurate by saying Vietnamese instead of enemies?
Of course Kennedy did not want his people to attack Vietnam. First off, it was meaningless. Second off, they could never fully defeat these Vietcong guerrilas. That's why he got assassinated and replaced by a puppet. I also have to say that the resiliency which the Vietcong soldiers had is admirable. They have faced a much more powerful enemy and were ready to do anything to drive them away, even if it meant spending their lives in those tunnels. When the war was finally over, many of those Vietcong soldiers had psychical and social problems.

Some of the movie Platoon was real. I was there, the "smoking" club was real, been there, the background portions were very real, a couple of the firefights were very close, especially the 1st one. Yes one of our tunnel rat's vanished and was found later on a stake (I know his name, but all I will say is he was from Durham, NC) I remember the trail beside the creek, and going up a ridge into a suspicious village. We did find VC and underground hiding places under mats, and enough rice to feed an army in a village of a couple dozen. Then there were the movie liberties, no one rapped anyone or shot in cold blood, but we did torch the village. most of the rest was BS.
Hey Steve, calm down. No point in hating on all like that, keep in mind the war only ended because so many of those "imperialists" were against the war and protested.

Umm I don't recall William Dafoe "standing up and running" in the tunnels, you can see he crouched down and shimmied along. He was a tunnel rat about the same height as the Vietnamese. A highly underestimated force for certain. They knew their terrain and had the upper hand with this knowledge and the tunnels despite our use of air power and military strength.
The whole Vietnam was just a disaster, I do not blame the soldiers because they were just fighting for their lives by orders, but the whole mission of going to Vietnam was stupid they didn't have a fucking chance at that terrain:/
They had no reason of being there i the first place.
They had a reason to be there. South Vietnam was attacked by their neighbor.
craigdoc29 Absolutely agree! "They knew their terrain and had the upper hand", which was exactly what happed to the French in Dien Bien Phu Battle. The Vietnamese know their country terrain like the palm of their hand. They have a stunning history of thousands of years resisting the world's great powers (like the mighty Mongols) and throwing out all foreign invaders (like the Chinese).
Not only that, but they were already combat veterans from having to fight the French. The Vietnam War was a lot longer for the Vietnamese than it was for the Americans
I remember playing a game called "Vietcong" back in the days and the tunnels there are the same as the tunnels shown in this documentary. He said he sometimes had to physically fight NVA or VC in the tunnels he said he did whatever to survive by shooting, stabbing and even kick, bite or scratch. Apparently he won those fights because he’s still living to tell about it. He said you developed a six sense in the tunnels where it was dark and he said you can feel when someone is nearby waiting.

@Cardinal RG ah so i fucked up by calling u r American. Btw on the off side of thing i'd wanna say: many Vietnamese will be offensive if they see ppl talking about Hồ Chí Minh being communist/looking down on him so just dont expect much of a good start.
Well lets do it again: Ho Chi Minh didnt even step back to his homeland *cuz* he was going out looking for help saing his country from France colonization(staying and rebelling aint help) not cuz other bs. He initially was gonna ask the US but they were allied with France so that wont work. So the only choice left was the USSR AKA going communist. He does not care how and who help him(and its not like its an option either), he only cares when would his people regain the independence that was once theirs own. His notion of freedom is simple as that, kick France out and declare independence for the people not giving out tons of bombs.
This time the Agent Orange will be sprayed over Washington.

Some of those tramps were called "souvenirs" since the soldier cant take them off and as to be carried away with the trap attached to his body. A cruel but good way to reduce the mobility of squads since they have to drag around a wounded buddy, reducing their overall effectiveness on combat. Those tunnels are so small. I can't imagine being underground in those on your knees and in the dark with some soldiers being their for hours perhaps longer and under extreme stress and on high alert.
Back in the mid 1960s, a friend of mine wore a pair of funny looking camouflage, rubberized boots to grammar school. When I asked him about his funny looking boots he said that his brother just returned from Vietnam and to took them off of a dead enemy soldier. It was so shocking to me, I told our teacher and he was immediately sent down to the principal's office. He returned to class an hour or so later wearing a pair of normal shoes. He told me his mother dropped off the other shoes and took the boots home but before leaving, the principal told her that if he ever wears those boots to school again, he would be suspended. That was 50 years ago and I still vividly remember the entire incident.

I packed .45 M1911A1. To enter a tunnel with a rifle was folly.
