Hi Sandi, Thanks to you and Cooper for sharing your process. :) One thought: this painting differs from your others in the proportion of the items on the table to those on the rug. The rug really pulls forward and the objects on the table seem farther away than usual. So to me there's a bit of a clash in what your eye is doing as you look at the scene. In some of your other paintings, the ones you seem more exited about, the objects on the table are proportionately larger, making them feel closer to the viewer and helping to animate the table. Making the objects larger would also affect the amount of white space of the table. Anyway, this might not be at all what you want to do with how the scene meshes together, but I thought I'd throw that observation into the mix. Oh, the challenges of resolving a painting! Have a great weekend. :)
Sandi, I agree with Sally above (very thoughtful observations by the way!) - the table and the rug are competing, I think because the rug design is the same size as the objects on the table. I know you don't usually paint shadows but I think some sort of shadow on the rug might help, or making the rug overall darker and enlarging the items on the table. I know you've moved on but I just kept thinking through the whole video "the rug is competing with the table!" so I just had to say something. :) Love your videos as always!
It is really helpful to me to see how you work through the artistic challenges you set for yourself, Sandi. I also like seeing how you use and have fun with new-to-me art materials. Thanks for all your work and the care and thoughtfulness you put into these videos.

Hello Sandi, Ive only just found your channel and I already love it ! I love the painting you were unsure of , I think this demonstrates, how we all feel sometimes with our work. Its a beautiful piece. I often put my work away, then look at it with fresh eyes. Lots of love and thanks from Wales UK xxx
I love your videos Sandi. You're so authentic and inspiring. I love that you address the problems that you have...like a normal person.lol. when I have troubles I can't identify i will take a pic with my phone. I can throw a black and white filter on it to check values. I struggle with that. It really helps. But the pics always always shows me so many things I don't see with my eyes. Love your work. 💖
I loved these two videos. The process can be so hard sometimes but most people don't like to show the times where we struggle. I love the picture and every time I saw it in the background I was hoping the video on it would come soon. We all have that problem child painting.
Nothings ever wasted Sandi, one of my main headings in my sketchbook.Sometimes I find it liberating to Chuck a piece I don’t like,it’s weird but it can give you a sense of freedom to see the next blank canvas or sheet of paper,we are constantly learning.
Thank you for your open hearted honesty and creative insights , I am new to your channel and instagram and really enjoying your process ,insights and tips on materials , in particular the sketchbooking as that is a big passion of mine as well . I am also in love with Cooper .
Sandi, don't give up on this painting! If you were one of my students a couple of critiques I would give--1. the reason the cat is an issue (after reading thru comments) is that its painted in a different style compared to the rest of the painting. (Something I have to be aware of in my work, too, lol!) I think if you made the cat black or at least a very dark grey and used less value changes in defining it, it would then match the rest of the simplicity and flatness of the rest of the objects in the painting. Also, to balance it add another cat somewhere in the background on the right but smaller with a similar color but less intensity. This will help balance the other cat. 2. Replace the "sun" in the background with a chandelier of some sort hanging over the table. This will help push the scene in the window into the background. People commented on the intensity of the curtains but actually the "sun" is what keeps pulling the background forward. Bottom line-if you are fed up with the whole image and there is a section of it that really speaks to you, you can always remove it from the stretcher and cut it down to just the section you think works and restretch it... I saw in some comments that people thought your painting was too busy but that is your style! Don't change it! Your paintings do "reward looking"! There is so much to explore within your designs. A successful work will capture the viewer and make them stay and look awhile...The new painting you showed is gorgeous! Can't wait to see the finished work on both pieces!
Thanks for sharing the journey. I really loved the owl & the cat. I would like to try to draw some owls but they seem so challenging with my limited time. Best of luck in your work.
Look at your white cabinet and note the shading. It is nit all white white because if the shadows. Maybe that is what you need to do. I don’t know I am grasping at straws here too. I think it is a good piece all in all so when you get happy it will be great!
I watched the door being opened and thought for sure you were heading for the pond out back with that painting.. i have to say I agree with you that it is just not working out . A little more paint on it and you may need Grady to lift it for you. ha ha .
I still love it. But I totally get the fact of putting it down. I have so many unfinished paintings on my wall. Maybe I will get back to them some day. And if I don't that is alright too!! 😀
Hi Sandi, love this video it’s goofy and such fun,I can relate to what you’ve been going through with this painting,it happens to me too, starting to like work then it slips through my fingers. My only criticism would be as fun as the tabletop is I think it might be a bit too busy, nowhere for the eye to rest.We all go through times like this, you are very talented so onwards and upwards, tomorrow’s another day.
I like the glasses. It's weird how you can have so many, but can't find any of them. I like the owl, lemons, basket, flowers, and striped mug. I love how you do salt and pepper shakers. It is looking cute.
Hi Sandi, let me say first that I love the way you paint and share your processes. To me, the table is not the problem, but the dark curtains and pink wall and maybe the cat. I somehow agree with @Sally Ann Sims that the things on the table and the rug are competing with each other, but that is ok to me. Then there is also the harbour, and the lady in the back, so there is a lot going on. I feel the curtains, the wall and the cat draw too much attention away from the more interesting things. The curtain and the wall could be the same colour, such as pastel yellow or light blue, or picking up the colour of the table, and recede more, and the cat could go as well. So the floor and the walls frame and connect the fun, whimsical busy areas of the painting. I hope you don't mind, me throwing my 2 cents in, it's like solving a riddle!
Hello Sandi... some questions regarding priming canvases and the large paper you paint on. 1. Do you use gesso or another "primer " to prep either? 2. Why or why not ...to prime or not to prime on each type of substrate? Benefits Pluses or minuses ect... 3.which is better, especially for those wanting to sell thier work?... 4. What is the difference between painting directly on the paper or canvas without prepping vs a primed or gessoed surface? *by canvas I mean ready canvas not raw. Thank you 🤗 Love your videos and congrats on your new classes ❤ Ps...would love to see these answered in a video 😉
I thought a mid yellow not a dark yellow. The same or similar yellow you painted over the white table. With the other subtle splashes of yellow around the painting. I thought it linked the elements in the painting nicely. Just my thoughts. How we all see paintings is such a personal journey. It is a lovely whimsical painting. I love it. You have such a creative flair. Thank you for sharing.
I really liked the pale yellow table phase, it gave a warm and cozy atmosphere. I find that the cat in that position polarizes attention too much, maybe if it was a bit far back it be better. Of course that's just my opinion!
I actually don’t think the table was too white. I thought it looked great b/c it made everything else on the table pop with color. I thought it looked amazing!
there have been sometimes when I have redone a painting 3 or 4 times before I really like the composition. Now I try to do a small one and get it right before I go try it larger or on canvas
@@sandihester I don't paint loose like you do, which is one of the many reasons i love your videos. I hope to learn how to free up my own drawings. I do love your work! Keep on Keeping on!
I kept wanting to tell you that the woman and the chair have tangents. It was driving me crazy. Lolololo even though you think it's a bomb, I absolutely love it.
I loved how the painting changed during your vlogs. It became so pretty! Also love your style of editing videos. I watched this video 3 times the past week, but all 3 times I didn’t left a comment. So sorry :( have a nice weekend
I love you, Cooper and your videos!!!! I love this painting and hope one day you resolve it. Leave it in the cupboard for a little longer. My thoughts are maybe the floorboards draw your eye further back rather than to the table. I also think pussy cat is too big so competes with the table. I think a small a smaller one asleep in a basket would be super cute. I would also ditch the woman as she is making my eye go back there. I think if the rug was made a warmer colour but still darker in value than the table it may sort out the competition between the table and rug.i would also be inclined to make items on table much bigger. And reduce the amount of competing patterns on the table. Love your style soooo much. I get so excited when I see your videos in my feed!!!
Thank you so much for sharing even the fails. But I have a question about the figure (bust) on the top right that is floating there. Just incase you have become painting blind. It happens to me often. I recall taking a figure painting class and I was looking at the model and working the marks paying attention more to the subject than the painting. Then the teach comes by and says “well now that is interesting!!” I was in the zone but now self conscious about what she meant because ‘interesting’ never means as it should. She explains that I have completely inverted the painting. I was painting the mirror imagine. Well when I looked that was all I saw. ‘it was going good ...until it wasn’t.’ Big Hugs. 💕🐞💕
Thank you! It’s so funny because several of you guys have mentioned the figure 😂 - I purposely didn’t finish it - there’s an artist I like who does that and I thought I’d do it 😂
Personaly I prefer the creamy version, because it was going well with the door color and it’s more complementary color with the blue of the rug then white. The spellchecker gets on my nerves😅. I have to find a solution
I LOVE me some Mr. Cooper!!! Sweet boy! Maybe he’s jealous of the cats in your painting. He’s saying, “mom, if you put me in your painting, it will be perfect!” Lol I do have a question for ya. Is there as much of a color shift when dry with Flashe Paint vs Acrylic? Good for you for putting your “closet painting” away...so it could later inspire new work. Yayyy you!!!
Cooper's jealous of anyone/thing I give attention to that's not him :) - he's a mama's boy and loves me to pieces! If I start talking to our cats - he comes running and stands there looking at me like he's really annoyed that they're in our life :). Flashe doesn't seem to have as much as a shift I don't think
sandi, i don't know if you painted over this one (gosh i hope not), but it's one of my favorite pieces of yours. i would totally buy a print of it if ever offered.... (cause i'm sure i prob couldn't afford the real thing)... would love to know the outcome of this painting.
Yellow is pretty but difficult. I usually add a tiny bit of dioxinine purple to yellow to give it some body. Not enough to change or dull the colour. It just seems to fix the table top problem you have.
Did anyone ever end up buying this or did you paint over it? I looked for it on your website but didn't see it listed. I luv the painting and hope you kept it. 🖌🖌
I didn't paint over it - just came across it the other day. not sure why I never posted it on my website but it is available if you're interested in it. you can email me from my website to inquire
You were not liking how bright the table was and how much it stood out. How about trying to go for a brown wood coloured table when you are having this problem? Most tables do not stand out and almost blend into the room/environment a bit because they are wood coloured especially when there are other wood features in a room, maybe this is an automatic detail your brain is focusing on/looking for. Also even though I think all the chaos of so many details gives your work charm I am wondering if you are struggling with the overall feel because you have a hectic rug design next to a table with a lot of stuff on it, maybe you are personally struggling with feeling like it needs more space for the eyes to rest. But if that is the issue, do not get rid of the rug design because I feel this is what you like about this picture. hmmm look at the chair at the front, the plain seat part gives a bit of space for the eye to rest...maybe in this situation you can add plain objects under the tables edge to give small spaces for the eyes to rest without loosing items on the table or without loosing a rug design which may be too large an area to leave plain. If I was you I would just play in the software program you are using so you can just try lots of things. I personally thought it looked fine all the colours you tried and I think it looks good and finished but pictures look different to everyone and i'm thinking of how you are perceiving it and what you may be struggling with/not liking. Good luck with it.
What breed of dog is Cooper, he is beautiful. Give the kitty some back legs, I see you favor dogs, hmmm. Love his beard. Oh he is toooo cute. I used to live in Shellbyville Tennessee a nice horse and cow ranching town.
My two cents worth... So not worth much... 😉🤭 Each time you showed the "closet painting" my eye kept seeing the bright blue curtains before anything.. Love you & Cooper... Is Grady really color-blind? 🥺 I was looking for his cameo appearance in the background... 😢😂
I think the depth of the floorboards is too high and close to the back of the table. Just looking at the your ultra matte paints review video and the balance of the wall, floorboards and position of table works really well in that painting.
I am at minute 17 and one thing I don’t like about this painting is that the rug is too similar in colour to the water outside the window. Also the bottom half of the painting confounds the eye with detail.
Maybe others will disagree about the rug. I’d like to hear. I would prefer a green rug with a pattern in the original blue. Pattern instead of animals. That’s just me and believe me I cannot paint with your talent. I can’t draw either because my hands are not steady.
You worry too much and it interferes with your work. I would have left the table the lighter color and not the color you left it. It compliments the stuff on the table. I like your dog. I drew a picture of him in my sketch book. Yes, I am an artist.
Hi Sandi, Thanks to you and Cooper for sharing your process. :) One thought: this painting differs from your others in the proportion of the items on the table to those on the rug.
Thank you!
20:13 Agree :)) Good Luck !!!!
Cooper 😊💖
I know ❤️ - he’s jut the best!
What if add some shadows to darken areas to the table. Maybe Cooper by the lady and chair.
👍🏻 thank you!
I like the cream version too!
The cat survived!! 😍 So far I think 🤔😂
Yes it did 😂😂😂
I LOVE me some Mr. Cooper!!! Sweet boy! Maybe he’s jealous of the cats in your painting. He’s saying, “mom, if you put me in your painting, it will be perfect!” Lol
I do have a question for ya.
@@sandihester that’s how our grand doggy feels about our granddaughter! Her life was ruined by the addition of a baby human. 💕
sandi, i don't know if you painted over this one (gosh i hope not), but it's one of my favorite pieces of yours. i would totally buy a print of it if ever offered.... (cause i'm sure i prob couldn't afford the real thing)... would love to know the outcome of this painting.
I think I still have it but I don’t do prints. So sorry
I was going to suggest that you leave the painting and do something else, like sketchbook work. Putting it away in the closet works as well! :)
I think it likes being in the closet :)
Yellow is pretty but difficult. I usually add a tiny bit of dioxinine purple to yellow to give it some body. Not enough to change or dull the colour. It just seems to fix the table top problem you have.
It can be difficult. I always neutralize it, which always helps.
@@sandihester Relieved to hear this ! It's too good to be painted over and has had such a 'journey' !! 🤪
👏👏👏🙏🙏🙏🙏❤
All the items on the table were small. Nothing bigger to break up the edge of the table somewhere...like you usually do. Xx
I just showed my today’s effort the inside of the trash bin,oh well tomorrow’s another day.🤪
Oh no!
Maybe you have to look at witch colours are the opposite of etchother. Red and green. Black and White.
What breed of dog is Cooper, he is beautiful. Give the kitty some back legs, I see you favor dogs, hmmm. Love his beard. Oh he is toooo cute. I used to live in Shellbyville Tennessee a nice horse and cow ranching town.
Oh that’s neat! Cooper is a Korthals Griffon
My two cents worth... So not worth much... 😉🤭 Each time you showed the "closet painting" my eye kept seeing the bright blue curtains before anything.. Love you & Cooper... Is Grady really color-blind? 🥺 I was looking for his cameo appearance in the background... 😢😂
This cracked me up - looking for grady 😂😂😂. He really is color blind! AND he argues with me about what a color is 🙄😂
What if the curtains were in shades of grey?
Possibly
how about a purple table? hehe
this cracked me up - is that the only color I didn't try??? :)
I love your style 💕💕💕💕💕💕
..and i think your dog is a man .
Thank you! And I agree about the dog 😂
What is the woman in the background with glasses on? Is she a painting? You are making me want to try painting again. Enjoy your videos.
No, I got inspired by another artist who usually doesn't even finish painting the whole body so I thought I'd do that - just part of her is painted :)
Why not try painting the table a tan or a beige and use some dark brown to put wood grain in it
I know it really does not matter to you, but I would paint the table to look like wood, maybe walnut.
not everything works out the way we want, more artists need to show that this happens rather then always posting the 'perfect' finished pieces
We do live in an age where we are surrounded by the "perfect" and I think it does affect us
I think the table is too light , maybe a wood color may do it ?
I think the depth of the floorboards is too high and close to the back of the table. Just looking at the your ultra matte paints review video and the balance of the wall, floorboards and position of table works really well in that painting.
Thanks!
I don’t understand the figure standing on the right of the window. Is she a sculpture?
The cat wants to be purple.
I hate to be obvious but.... “NO I LOVE IT, DONT PAINT OVER IT!”
Thank you Jane!!!! I appreciate that - I've heard that from several of you :)
Try out lining it
👍🏻
New eyes, put in closet for a day or two. Then you will see it differently. You don't see what is in front of you if it is all you see.
You worry too much and it interferes with your work. I would have left the table the lighter color and not the color you left it. It compliments the stuff on the table.
I like your dog. I drew a picture of him in my sketch book. Yes, I am an artist.
I love it!!
Thank you!!!
