So I'm just starting the video, but needed to say this: you are Not stupid because you got into the moment and chaos of doing art with your niece, you are such a cool aunt! Watching you with your niece reminds me a bit of crafting with my Grandma. She will have those memories forever, and they are precious! ❤
Those final paintings are so beautiful! And i love the boat ones. I agree that painting lose is so much harder. I started trying to do it after watching your videos and I feel like not only is it harder but you're also fighting your own habit of painting tight so you have to be very aware and present. It's no joke! Haha
I used to hate when people compared my art to folk art. No I love it! I think that if you can retain childlike innocence in your art then you have attained Perfection because children do not care about composition line and value but they just paint for the pure joy of doing so. I paint for the pure joy of doing it because I have a passion for art and I have since 5 years old. I love your videos and I admire your outlook on life even though you have had your trials also. I have a very difficult life of sickness and some days my life can be very Bleak but on the days I get to do art I can feel like a child again and keep that childlike sense of wonder and astonishment that life can bring. Thank you for your art Sandi. You're a wonderful and wondrous human being. Take care!
Ooh, I should definitely get that Maud Lewis book! Those few paintings that flashed by while you were leafing through the book looked good. Would you consider making a video about your art books? I mean not just books that are explicitly on art, but all the books you have that you find inspiring or just lovely.
Oh my. This was utterly delightful. I love your work so much. Cannot get enough. Thank you for bringing us in to your process. Would love to have been a fly on the (garage) wall while you talked to your niece about what to leave out and what to add in as you composed your yard pictures. Watching, learning, and loving it.
Thank you so much! It just KILLS ME that I didn't set up the camera when we painted!!! We're planning on painting much more together over the summer and her mom has given me permission to film so hopefully I'll be mindful enough to set up the camera in the future. So glad you enjoyed it though!
Sandi- love your painting style❤️- and another thing- you’re exactly right about painting realistically verses painting ‘loosely’. It takes knowledge of all the principles and elements to effectively paint LOOSE! Love that you mentioned that! Keep doing what you’re doing SO WELL...!😉
Sandi, those last two pieces are stunning. I particularly LOVE the texture of the pastel & pencil crayon/coloured pencil (my Canadian is showing!) piece. Your work is so rich with life and your vlogs are just so satisfying to the soul! Keep up the wonderful work you’re doing!
Love your work Sandi, and I fully agree with you about we have to paint neat and tidy in the beginning to finally be able to paint loose. In my illustrator days I would paint every hair or feather in a photo,I really dislike that work now and I am loving painting loose now but it’s been a whole new learning process that will probably go on for the rest of my painting life. The trees you painted and sold were fabulous.x
Gorgeous, I really like the look of your paintings when you layer up with pastels or coloured pencils on top! I’m wanting to reach for sketch books again now!!!! 💓
Ohhh I am in love with the pages in your sketchbook with the painting of your Mum's garden and the lettering!! As a journaler and lover of children's books this appeals in a massive double whammy!! The yello was the perfect choice. I also loved you writing on your sketchbook cover because I enjoyed seeing you not like it and wipe it and then not be sure. Haha I realise that sounds a bit weird but it because that is exactly what I do a LOT. It's so normal! And later on I look at it and love it, or don't feel bad, or look back and remember that moment of regret and be amused. It is just nice to see normality and experimentation and real honest feeling about everything you do. I LOVE so many of your paintings especially the interior/tables ones. One day when I have oodles of money I want one, but right now I'm not in that place. I'm sure you've considered it so I won't suggest it (because I know from experience that we get helpful suggestions constantly and on top of all our own creative ideas and impulses it can get overwhelming) but if at any point you decide to sell prints or do patreon just know I'd love to be involved. Otherwise I'm just going to have to work my butt off so I can buy a painting at the proper price you absolutely deserve for all that hard work! Something to look forward to!! Maybe I will start a savings plan in my journal hehe. So interesting hearing your thoughts about 'realistic' art. I just look at what you do and get butterflies in my tummy and that's how I judge if I love someone's art or not! It's all totally subjective anyway! Also wonderful to see how you do it and your process and thoughts of course, all that background adds to the appreciation definitely, ams especially I love that I've never been able to do anything the way you do it, my style is very different, and I absolutely appreciate how skilled you are. Oooh and I also love, love, love it when you share your inspiration, the artists books, I've never come across anyone you've shared before (mostly because I've gone in totally different art/creative/cultural circles to you) so that is all very exciting for me. Thankyou for providing a lovely weekend bright spot! X
Sandi I love that you paint versions of other artists’ work some times. Why do I feel guilty about the idea of doing this? Well I have decided that if Sandi can do it, I can too!
Sandi --- Thanks for sharing more info on loose painting. It's so inspiring. ( I love the new painting that you just did even more the one you just sold!!) I look forward to your next video.
You can outline it in gold or a lighter green. Looks good. Your loose paintings are awesome! The red boat, pink pig holding anchor and blue cat on boat with red ears! So good to see you this evening. Congratulations on selling two more paintings! Great idea and so glad you’re painting the landscape again. You can leave it number 1, you will paint more even if it’s much later.
Hi Sandi, only found you this week..and have watched a lot of your videos and enjoying your creativity and happy nature, your a breath of fresh air. Thank you, take care, Susan In Oz. Subscribed😀
Hey Susan, and WELCOME!!!! So glad to have you hear and I'm thrilled to hear you're enjoying the videos so much - thank you for taking time to write me!
I completely agree with your comments about keeping it loose. I love your style but don’t think I could ever replicate iit because I always get too tight. I love your bold colors and folk style. ❤️
Really enjoyed watching you. Congrats on your double sale. May there be many more. Your art deserves a spot on somebody’s wall to be cherished. I find your art so uplifting, fun and layered. And what you say about loose painting. So true. I am struggling with that big time.
Thank you so much - such encouraging and kind words! I have been selling now quite regularly so that's been really fun - though I do usually hate to part with them. Just keep working at it - I struggle with it too - I'm trying to take it to the next level with looseness and it's hard!
@@sandihester Yes, parting is such sweet sorrow. I know how you feel. Ha, though I do seldom sell something to be honest. But it is a good thing that you have trouble parting with your paintings in my opinion...you are happy with them. And that is a gift in itself. Learning a lot from you and just enjoy seeing you put down paints. Thank you for that!
That hose may have been an electric extension cord. Lol I know I know imagination, I don't think I have one. Brave be brave, paint brave! My favorite saying I got in German town on a trivit. "Ve get too soon old und to late shmart". I get it! I can copy things well, you kind of know what or where it is. I find it's easier to paint then to draw. And I like to work in big scale. My first really big painting is 72 x 24 inches of the inside of a Brooklyn subway car with passengers, and lots of posters that are always interesting. But I made them geared to our family history.

@@gradyhester4456 Grady you look like Clint Eastwood only you're handsomer!!! Love to you and your beautiful "Goddess of Joy" awe thanks for posting a reply you're soooooo lovely thank you! 👌
I agree with you, that it’s harder to get a loose painting with imaginary elements. Also to get the color palet right and a composition that the eye of the viewer goes over the whole painting. I made paintings from photo’s in acryl and portraits in pencil. Now I am doing imaginary frogs and it has to come from deep inside me. Sketching all the different position, expressions and is a long process and very hard. PS I love your videos and binge watching them. I’m so glad I found you on instagram!
Those colours in the landscape are magic Sandi!! Just beautiful! 🤩 I have been trying to loosen my brush strokes each time I paint. So true Sandi, it’s not as easy as it seems. 🤣
Love those irises still (hoping we might get a short video out of it, like your cat series of paintings all over the place)! Congratulations on exceeding 4,000 subscribers! Onward to 40,000!
Thank you! Yes, I do have some video coming of the irises 🙌. I’m also going to sell them at a discounted price so if you’re interested make sure to keep an eye out non my stories on Instagram. Thank you - I appreciate you noticing the growth 🤗❤️! It’s exciting and encouraging to be growing !!!
Yay for sales! I sold a painting this week as well, to someone who bought one last month but they were for house-warming presents. Loved the colours in the new "Our View" painting, but then I'm a purple girl and I know you've only just started using purple.
Painting, the way you do, IS HARD! I try, try again...I will get there but it is easier to paint "realistic" because all the little lines and color are there for you to see. I enjoy your approach very much! Thank you for sharing your self and your work! All the best to you and yours.
Sandi, as always, what a fun, amusing tute from you! Congrats on selling not just one, but TWO paintings!! What a fabulous feeling that must be!! I also just have to tell you, that one of my all time fave movies is Maudie! And here you are, talking about her. That's who I thought of, when I first saw your work on here, about a month back. Wasn't she an amazing woman! And I totally agree, with what you said about realistic paintings vs. whimsical, , loose, child like pieces! I have a book called 'Paint Happy', by Christina Acosta and I tried using her super colorful, very loose style, and no crap, It is NOT easy!! Your videos just always make me smile, from start to finish, so keep on doing what your doing gurl friend! Now I'm going to check out your Instagram. Thank you for ALL you do for us!
Thank you so much!!! So kind of you! I love the Maudie movie too - though they got some of it wrong - I've read a LOT about her but it was still a good movie! Hope you enjoy my Insta! thanks for going to look!
I’m so in love with all the pieces you created in this video! Your style is absolutely amazing! Can I use your quote on my sketchbook? It’s a good daily reminder to just do and have fun and don’t care about the result before I started ! Thanks for your lovely videos! They are soooo good ! Have a nice weekend
this really spoke to me, I always say in order to be a good realist painter - to render things life-like you have to be an abstract painter, but what you are saying is true in reverse also, if you want to be an abstract painter you have to know and render your values, points of views, points of reference in order to create without being so tight (locked into those abstract shapes so neatly that it would come out too realistic) ....?
Oh, I LOVE Maud Lewis!! Have you seen the movie - "Maudie" -- it's really good, if not a bit distressing (her husband was a tool of the highest proportion, to put it lightly.) Anyway! And YES, painting loose is SO HARD! Haha!! I wish every time someone made a snidey comment like 'anyone could do that', a paintbrush would get shoved in their hand and they'd get told - "knock yourself out". 😂. Thank you for sharing your work and your process - as always - you are such a huge inspiration and I love that you're sharing all that with your niece -- how awesome to have an art date with her!! Pure magic! 🦄🥰
This made me laugh!!! Someone commented that Picasso said he spent his whole life trying to paint like a kid again - I love that - but it’s also evident to how hard it is. Thank you for the kind words ❤️❤️❤️. Yes, I’ve seen the Maudie movie. They got some things really wrong but overall I liked it! I’ve read a lot on her - she’s such an example of overcoming adversity. I mean - you think it felt good to paint with those poor hands of hers?!?!? NEGATIVE!
That would be a good video - thanks for the suggestion - I'll give it some thought on how to share that with yall. We price paintings per square inch. I have a different price for paper and for canvas.
Hi Sandi! I am LOVING your videos!! Thank you so much for your generous sharing of these bits of your life as an artist. Do you have a donate button somewhere? I’d love to at least treat you to a coffee every so often to thank you for your generosity! Your inspiration is wonderful! Thank you!💖💖💖
Awesome video. I am a loose painter too. I paint & draw fast, so no choice really. I see a bear, or maybe a koala, sitting in the bottom left corner of your reproduction - like a grey/green colour :)
Hello Sandi. I hope I am not disturbing you. I just wanted to say that your videos are a joy to watch. I have binge watched most of them, and, sadly, I am almost caught up. You have this humorous way that just puts me in the best of moods, as well as gets me painting! Anyway, there is a subject that keeps popping up in your videos, and, I was hoping to give you an option. You have bad allergies to some of the paints you use. Have you ever tried milk paint? I am not a professional artist, so, I have zero idea of what this kind of paint looks like on canvas, but, I do know, it is a natural paint and would not give you allergies. I live in a 260 year old house, and, some of the paint used for walls, floors, etc. is milk paint. I am sure it would look beautiful in some of your paintings. Sorry to ramble on. I usually do not write comments, as, I am kind of like a scared mouse, hiding away in her hole, but, I felt badly about your allergies, and was hoping to help in some way. Everybody tells me I cannot help everybody, but hey, I can at least try. Haha. Best wishes to you, and, thank you for your wonderful videos filled, not only with art knowledge, but, with this fun and addictive energy. You pass on this happiness and joy. Many thanks, Emily
Emily thank you for your kind words!!!!!! I’ve actually found several options in acrylics and other mediums. I have heard of milk paint but haven’t tried any. Thank you soooooo much for writing ❤️
Just watched some of your older Instagram posts, so much fun, and I loved the African Women series. Can you please do a video on how to paint figures? Thank you. Have a great week. 🙋🏼♀️🌻🥰
Thank you Susie! I’m glad you enjoyed my insta posts. I did a video on how to paint/draw the face. I do need to follow up with a full figure tutorial. Soooo many things I want to share with y’all!
@@Suzi77 I know 😂. So many things and so little time. Tutorial videos take a ton of time and I find it hard to do them getting a new video out each week. I usually need 2-3 weeks to work on a tutorial video 😭
Sandi, thank you for sharing your process and struggles (sellers's remorse is a REAL thing!) Also, maybe you've covered this topic, (I'm a newer here, so forgive me) Have you ever considered just opening an Etsy shop for selling your work? It's a great jumping off point before you get your own site up and going. It took me a while to get my own site up, and etsy (although not my favorite way to run a business) made getting started easy while I worked on building my shopify store. P.S. You have the sweetest face and most adorable pink cheeks! Um, ok, sorry if that got weird, haha! :)
Hey Deb, first off WELCOME!!! So glad to have you here! I’ve actually started selling over on my website 🙌. Thanks you for the Etsy thoughts though - I appreciate that. ❤️
What is flash paint? I’ve heard you say it a couple of times but just wondered what exactly it refers to-a brand? Kind of paint? Some paint with a particular added medium? Hahaha! Love your work but guess I get so caught up I have no idea what …. . Oh my! Magical spells you weave!
@@sandihester thank you so much as I say “oooohhhhh” I may have seen it because our little store stocks something I thought was acrylics in a squat glass jar and the colors looked out of this world!! I love your videos, they absolutely mimic how my journey has gone (where realism isn't the top for me) and where my priorities are. I'm curious (and this probably seems odd) but can you visualize in your mind? I have found (in my 40's) that I'm on the aphantasia spectrum and I've been processing that as I'm trying to decide where to go artistically now, and how I want to grow next. If I try to visualize I get a flash of memory/image/collage of transparencies/a "knowing" about what I'm trying to visualize, but it's gone instantly and cannot be recalled--so I have historically either used references or have practiced form and rules to the point where I can fake my way a little--but I'm not going from an idea in my mind that is pre-formed. (Example: faces are easy as basic facial rules can start a drawing, but I don't know what it will look like in the end.) I'm interested to know how you work in that way? Do you ever paint from an image in your mind? Thanks!
What a beautiful masterpiece. Enjoyed watching u paint. It’s so aesthetically pleasing. Btw New friend here sending all the love and support u need for your Ch. hope we can connect!
people either forget or dont know that Picasso painted realism before he went and painted cubism, realistic work and 'loose' work actually have a lot in common. both take work, yes in different ways, and they both have good and bad points but in the end both styles are art and it shouldnt be a case of one being better than the other. art is art, and the whole this style is better than that style hurts artists and non artists.

Thanks so much Jas!!! I really appreciate you writing and welcome!!! Thanks so much for watching ❤️
I really like your landscapes, the colours you used in this version are very Spring like!
Thank you very much!
Those colours in the landscape are magic Sandi!! Just beautiful! 🤩
I have been trying to loosen my brush strokes each time I paint. So true Sandi, it’s not as easy as it seems. 🤣
Thank you so much ❤️. It’s so much harder than people think!
So now I know what happened to painting #1. Looked for it in your website! 😁 Loved that one!!! The other one you did from it was beautiful also!!!!
😂 that’s funny!
Heyyyy Ms. Sandi!!!!
CLAIRE!!!!! Hey you! I hope you're doing well - sure miss you!!!
@@sandihester im doing great! miss ya too :)
So glad to hear that ❤️
Love those irises still (hoping we might get a short video out of it, like your cat series of paintings all over the place)!
Haven't even started watching but already excited hehe!
Awe - thank you! I hope you u enjoyed it ❤️
Your painting turned out so beautiful! I love the colours. 😍
Thank you so much!!!
Yay for sales! I sold a painting this week as well, to someone who bought one last month but they were for house-warming presents. Loved the colours in the new "Our View" painting, but then I'm a purple girl and I know you've only just started using purple.
You go girl! Congrats on the sell!!!! Yes, I'm SLOWLY warming up to purple :)
@@sandihester Thank you :)
Painting, the way you do, IS HARD! I try, try again...I will get there but it is easier to paint "realistic" because all the little lines and color are there for you to see. I enjoy your approach very much! Thank you for sharing your self and your work! All the best to you and yours.
Thank you so much!!!!
I love hanging out with you...it makes me feel brave and like a part of me really is an artist!
Awe - that is SOOOOO sweet! Hey, if you create, you're an artist!
Wonderfully said, Anji
What a very special aunt you must be.
The lilac patch and grass Green is pretty
Yes of course! Would be an honor for you to use it! Thank you for your kind words!
this really spoke to me, I always say in order to be a good realist painter - to render things life-like you have to be an abstract painter, but what you are saying is true in reverse also, if you want to be an abstract painter you have to know and render your values, points of views, points of reference in order to create without being so tight (locked into those abstract shapes so neatly that it would come out too realistic) ....?
Correct. I’m glad this spoke to you!
NEGATIVE!
What would you call your style of art Sandi? Love the video! 💕🎨
Loose. Thank you!!
Can you teach us what you taught your niece :). And how do you decide on prices for paintings? Many thanks!
Thank you!💖💖💖
Well goodness- thank you!!! No donate button at this point but I really appreciate that!
I feel the same way about my art I have hanging in my house!
❤️
Awesome video. I am a loose painter too. I paint & draw fast, so no choice really. I see a bear, or maybe a koala, sitting in the bottom left corner of your reproduction - like a grey/green colour :)
ohhh, I'll have to go and see if I can see it!
What a Devine dog
❤️❤️
I had an art teacher who would say "Slap it on, just slap it on."
I like that!!!
Many thanks,
Emily
Emily thank you for your kind words!!!!!! I’ve actually found several options in acrylics and other mediums. I have heard of milk paint but haven’t tried any. Thank you soooooo much for writing ❤️
How do you decide on pricing?
I price per square inch. Let me know if you have more questions about it.
@@sandihester yes, you did say you were gonna do it and I am happy to watch your videos, just a gentle reminder. 😻
@@sandihester Yay! Congrats on the site!!🥳
@@debbiedrawsfunny thank you!!
It’s a brand and it’s a vinyl paint and dries matte
@@sandihester thank you so much as I say “oooohhhhh” I may have seen it because our little store stocks something I thought was acrylics in a squat glass jar and the colors looked out of this world!! A town of 1600 with 2000 tourists on a big art weekend with a little art store! You gotta look up Marfa, TX if you’ve never heard of it-crazy place with an even crazier history!
i like you alot my art is different than yours but thats what makes the world go around we are all on our own path .im an acrylic artist learning watercolors and yearning to try some bob ross oil landscapes .i paint every day at home in my 1 bedroom apt i love it .thank you for sharing
Thank you!
It is so hard to loosen up. I am so super detailed and it is so hard to edit it back.
It really is!
You have such beautiful hair
Thank you !
I am totally in love with Hank. Might he pose for another painting?
He moved (sold him to someone in Canada) - I think I heard some of the guys say he had a cousin that may come to work at the boat yard though :)
Thank you so much!!! Welcome to the channel!
I think people confuse “loose” with abstract. I personally love loose watercolor but abstract is not my jam. To each his own as they say.
Do you need or want a new niece? 😁😆😁😆 Love your channel.
😂 that made me smile Bren!
people either forget or dont know that Picasso painted realism before he went and painted cubism, realistic work and 'loose' work actually have a lot in common. both take work, yes in different ways, and they both have good and bad points but in the end both styles are art and it shouldnt be a case of one being better than the other. art is art, and the whole this style is better than that style hurts artists and non artists.
You're not a lover. I am because I'm not doing what my heart feels 💔. You are. You're whom I want to become. Many blessings to you.
I can't spell either. I meant you're not a loser.
Awe thank you! I knew what you meant.
@@sandihester Thank you 😊 🙏 I'm close to starting at art school. I'm sorry it took me so long to realize. It was always with me but I'm sorry I didn't know much sooner how this can be more than just a hobby. Thank you for you.
To the critics: realistic art = Zzzzzzz
this cracked me up!
