I'd lost my verve for painting when BLAM your site appeared like a tidal wave, destroying all the perfectionism, detailed strokes, fatigue and depression that had kept me from just plain enjoying myself. I'm a new woman today because of you! I should be painting rather than binge watching your electrifying vlogs but I can't stop! They fill me with joy + hope. One thousand thank yous for giving so much of yourself, your valuable time and sharing what you know. Pls know it's appreciated and in my case, life-altering. Waving from Toronto, Nina
Wow Nina, what a sweet comment to get today. I'm soooo glad these videos could be such a help and come at a good time in your life. Thank you for writing!
I second this message! I have up painting and art altogether for several years because I wanted REALISM and I was not content with my finished result and had no idea the process was important. I am now experimenting and actually enjoying the process whether it be realism or not. THANK YOU SANDI !! Also waving from Toronto, Kayla :)
Grady, the art critic. I like the ring of that! Really, well done and lots of fun on the journey of your ups and downs... sittin on the edge of my seat for next weeks video!
Sandi, I love how you let us see the entire process, especially how you resolve issues as you go along! This painting is so happy and fun. I love the colors, the ocean scene outside the window, the lady sitting in the corner, the animals, the rug, etc. Did I say I love it? Well, I do!!! Thanks for another fun and informative video!
Yay! Your enthusiasm is infectious. You always make me want to paint. I could listen to you talk about what you are trying to do, what you are doing, and what you are struggling with forever. These are the conversations I have with myself.
You know how you say certain things you paint crack you up -well you crack me up 🤣 You are soooo wonderful! That painting is just wonderful! The way you decide - decide to keep, decide to eliminate, decide to cover- you are a blessing ❤️🙏 You are helping me soooo much to DO! To DO! to Do! You are the artist friend and teacher that I need in my life! I am an artist in many ways- but painting is new to me and I am so happy to find you! Love you sooooo much! Thank you! Please keep making these videos for us! You definitely are demonstrating your purpose in life as a Marvelous Artist and a Fantastic Teacher ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️Blessings to your baby animals too 😍😍😍 and your hubbie 😊
Dear Sandy - you are so refreshing and honest! Wonderful! It is most helpful how you talk about you dreams and fears as you approach a new canvas. It is a difficult process made up of all your efforts, learnings, sufferings and life experience. You have great facial expressions! I still freeze before the blank canvas still and I'm sixty seven! When I was a kid I did a really wonderful painting of a sunset. I showed my father and he said, 'You will never see clouds in real life in those colors. It's not very good!' On the way to school (I was going to nshow my art teacher) I looked at it, had a moment of great doubt, and threw it down a drain! I still hear my father's voice before every piece of art I begin. I am trying to start adult coloring with pencils. I have all the equiptment, but can't start! As you say, art is hard. You give so much encouragement with talking through your process. Thank you! Blessings to you. Kevin - Australia.
Kevin, I’m so sorry you had that terrible experience as a kid- such a bummer. Just remember though - not everyone understands art. My husband is the most supportive person of my art in the world but when I started painting he’d say “well, there’s not a tree there or _____ isn’t there” stuff like that - he didn’t realize that art is more that coping a subject- we are story tellers and we get to “say” whatever we want. So be careful in handing onto aREAL negative vibe with your dad - he may not have meant it in a harsh way - he may just not have understood art. Even if he did mean it in a mean way - throw those feelings tied to that day down the drain and get back to enjoying art - be a storyteller and make kid art that you didn’t get to make as a kid. Life is to short to fill in blanks of what others have said. Get to playing Kevin!!!! 🤗
My first video of yours (after the studio tour, thanks algorithm!). I'm really enjoying seeing your process and hearing your decision making through a tough painting. I think I found a new fave to watch while I I pack my etsy orders. Thank you for sharing this with us!!!!!
So loved riding the struggle bus with you!! Thanks for letting us tag along. I LOVE that cat....he has Presence and that's such a cat thing so I hope he gets to stay, in some iteration or other 😉. You *always* have such a great attitude and I love how you talk yourself around when things get dire...can't wait for the next episode! 🥰
Sandi! Im so loving everything; your infectious emthusiasm for your art, your style-both personal & artistic, and you letting us into your proces. Thanks! Im so glad i found a TN artist! Im a West TN girl, who likes to think about being artistic, so you inspire me! You're great!
"You should have done that, Missy" had me laughing so hard. What I've started doing is if a painting is close to being finished, but it's also getting close to the end of the day, I just put my paintbrush down and come back to it the next day. I do this even if I think it will only take another half hour to finish it. I go home with how I want to tackle the final bit in my head, so I know exactly where I want to begin the next day. When I come back to it, I reevaluate my plan for the final run. Sometimes it changes, sometimes not. We all want to "get a painting finished and move onto the next one", but just taking a breath before the final run always helps my painting, and my, ultimately, my mental health (because fewer stuffed up paintings, y'all!).
I have been binge watching all your videos and I have to say, you make me want to paint or create anything and everything lol! You also inspired me to grab some overalls from Duluth. I am so in love with the comfyness (not a word but it describes exactly how I feel in the overalls😜) and how I feel like I am an artist about to accomplish great art haha. Thanks for all you do!
You have made think about so many things. I started ordering paint and sketchbooks only to discover I have still so many to fill! Now I just have more! My head is spinning with ideas once again! You've fueled a spark. Thank you! Keep it up! You have a gift, you are a gift!
Awe - Janine!! Man, what a great compliment- that the videos got you all inspired 🙌- yes!!! Thank you for sharing that! Now, HAVE FUN making lots of bad art along with some good - enjoy the process!!
Sandi! What a treat to watch you work though this. It’s SO interesting how a painting - once it’s done - can seem like it was “easy” to make, but I don’t think people realize how much thought goes into nearly every decision! Composition! Color! Value! Scale! All at once. I sincerely admire your guts to go for it and paint over or add to the canvas. I’m learning so much. The trick for me now is to put it into my own practice... so much easier said than done. XO, Stacie
Stacie, thank you for this comment and letting me know how this impacted you. I was afraid this video would be boring to people. So glad you liked it and found it helpful ❤️
I found your channel a few weeks ago and lady, I could watch you paint all day 😊 your style is so quirky and different and like other people have said, I really enjoy getting to see so much of your process. Even though you’re down to every 2 weeks for vids, I can’t wait to see what you’ll do next!
I can't wait to see the video next week. I'm in the edge of my seat! I definitely know about the roller coaster of love and hate with a painting. Great video this week
Sandi, I love how you don’t give up and work through it! That is a true sign of a true artist! I love process whether it is good or bad. And that’s really what it’s about. Pushing through to make new discoveries. About the paint cups! Let me tell you, I have shamefully, plastic shot glasses with paint mixes in plastic ziplock baggies. I want to move to small glass jars. Thank you for your weekly inspiration, enthusiasm, your fun style and art! Much love
So much fun to watch this video and listen to your thoughts. It is a good painting and will be grand when you sign your name. I love the color changes and the different “cat toys” underneath the table. Get a good nights rest and build up your energy! 😍 🤗
Another awesome video Sandi!! There is always something that inspires me and some day, when I grow up, I’m going to paint with such abandon too!! #lifegoals #iwanttopaintlikesandi #doozydoggypaintingfun I use 2 oz plastic cups with air tight lids. Amazon has them but they’re super pricey. Jerry’s has great prices on them so I order them from there. I started doing that a couple years ago while I was working on large acrylic painting. I needed custom mixes to use on the big 5’ x 6’ canvas. I knew the painting was going to take months to complete and I needed a very specific palette with consistent colors throughout. The little cups worked like a dream and the paint lasts for months. My acrylic paint mixes are the consistency of heavy cream so I’m not sure how stiffer acrylic mixes would hold up. Oh and...I just placed a big Blick order for Flashe paint!! I’m so excited!! I totally relate too to how you were talking about how your body gives out from painting before your mind does. I do struggle with that myself. I used to paint for long hours a day, barely stopping for food. I now contend with MS and Lupus. My mind is willing...my flesh has a fine sense of humor!! I make plans and sometimes my body just says “no way Jose’ not today” lol. Blessings to ya from Texas. Thanks again sweet girl for sharing yourself with us.
Debbie, what a great comment to get! I want you to know that I’m so sorry you deal with these health issues - NOT EASY! Ok, I’m heading right now to Jerry’s (online) to see if I can find those jars! Thank you for that and thank you for your kind note ❤️❤️❤️
@@sandihester yayyy!! I went back to my orders. The cups I use are Plaid Cubby Ware cups. I misspoke. I found them on the Mr. Art website but there are many other kinds you can choose from on different sites. These are the ones I like. They seal very nicely and hold 2 oz of paint.
To me it's the other way around. Painting from life is the hardest option. I prefer to take a picture, make a quick sketch or just stare at it for long enough to remember, so I can paint at my own pace at home.
Everytime you do a big painting I enjoy watching your process so much. Your thoughts and all the stuff around it; paint babies and brushes and too much paint on your vingers to touch the camera. Everytime I laugh out loud my dog jumps up and says what's going on??! 😄
Wow first time I have seen one of your videos and I love seeing your process. It can be daunting at times when you get to that messy stage can’t it? Thanks can’t wait to see the next installment.
Your videos are so much fun! I love to watch them !! I hope the cat stays until the end, but we will have to wait another week to find out (this part I don't like I have to tell you, girl!😿). Until next time, Sandi! 😺
When Sandi adjusted the rug at the bottom, "I said out loud, "Sandi! Don't you touch my horse. I love that horse!" Lol! My horse? I hope O can wait patiently 🤪
Sandi! I love watching your process because I absolutely understand every stage of it, the never wanting to stop, the doing things even though you have noidea if you should, etc. I actually felt a lump in my throat when you changed the greeny rug to blue hahaaa! It was a good change and the whole feel of the painting took a brightening turn (like the sun suddenly coming out from behind cloud). I can't wait to see where it all ends up, because I know you can do it and get there in the end and I know I for one will love it. Watched with my son again and he did his own version of the painting ❤️ See you next week!
Thanks for sharing the process! As a hobby artist, I feel connected to my success and failures in art, but my work stresses me out more. So I wish you well as you work through your art and keep growing & learning. I also like the way you take breaks from things to think about it. Thanks again!
PS - I also think it is so neat how you can change your mind and work over spots. I work in watercolor and pen & ink. So I think it is so neat to understand what went into the under layers and changes as the work was modified, like in those art documentaries. Oh and I love that big cat.
Love your Ecclectic Style kids like " Boho" I gain so many artsy ideas...and Grady is like my " Hunny" also get to input their constructive criticism lol 🎉😊
Best UA-cam content out there. Thank you for letting us into your artistic battle! It inspires me to keep going. Absolutely love the finished result. A few weeks I bought flashe paint because of you...its a dream to work with!! Thanks!
@@sandihester For sure, loved the video, I bought the Flashe paint and have been working with it for about two weeks, question? how do you keep it so vibrant, mine sometimes seem to muted, is it mud? is there a trick, or just always always gesso first? Thanks for any thoughts.
Hi! I'm new to your channel & even though your style is different from what I normally gravitate too I appreciate your work. Not only is your channel helpful in seeing art supplies I may want to try, but also soothing to watch. Glad I happen to come across it! Also great to see another "Tennesseeian" as myself! Lol
Today, I saw a woman that reminded me of you and I found myself thinking, I need to be Sandi. I love your style and creativity. For me, it's time for a career change. God bless 🙏 and thank you 😊.
A woman after my heart...I save so many odd containers " in case"! I have at least 25 of those little cups. Mine came from cat food and fruit cups (same type). You are right about having to use Press and Seal. It is a pain but effective. Love watching and hearing your thoughts about painting. The finished piece will be stunning, without a doubt!
Hi! I love this video!! Just found you and I'm going to watch all your videos.... you remind me of another artist vlogger called The Unexpected Gypsy. Your studio is amazing. It was so lovely to see you talking through the entire process, good and bad. Xx
Oh thank you and WELCOME! So glad to have you here and thank you in advance for watching all my videos - whoohooo!!! Means a lot! Yes, I'm familiar with The Unexpected Gypsy!
I so know that feeling of my body can’t do anymore but I so want to do more that’s so hard. I so love love your videos I will be so sad when I’ve caught up thank you xxx
Sandi, do you know the work of primitive painter, Maude Lewis? I get weepy retelling her story. Though she had rheumatoid arthritis, which made her tiny (she was buried in a child's coffin),she painted from the 1950s selling her painted cards door to door often caught in snowstorms. She lived in a one-room, unheated cottage with a brutal husband who wouldn't let her keep the radio on while she painted - due to the expense. But nothing stopped her: she walked 3 miles to the store for her house paint + brushes. In the 60s she was named a Canadian treasure and her tiny cottage was relocated inside the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia. I'm so grateful that her art was loved, purchased and covetted. Your joyful art reminds me of her "joi de vivre". Oh oh maybe she's sitting in the corner, smoking her pipe, watching you work LOL....A movie about her life was made in 2017 with Ethan Hawke. No doubt you know all this but here's the trailer link if you don't: ua-cam.com/video/6gq6sXFMvXc/v-deo.html PS Are you planning a RENDR sketchbook review? I'd love that! I'm dying to try them but they're so expensive here in Canada. Thank you for all you do and share!
Yes, I’m very familiar with Maud and have mentioned her and her work several times in my videos. I’m a big fan of her work ❤️! Thank you for your kind words 🥰
You're so good. And you totally know what you're doing. My take thus far is that the rug is a little...contrived or pre-determined? Whereas the tabletop appears more "found" & has a lovely quiet to it. Are you familiar with Mary Feddon's work? You're so good at built up, abstract surfaces. Some expanses of those might be helpful. But it's really very good! & essentially great just as it is. You're so talented! I'm just thinking outloud...
Hi! I am enjoying your videos! I was wondering what value finder you use. I feel like you said it in another video, but I can't seem to find it. Also, would you consider explaining how you use it? I had never heard of them, and googled it, though I am interested in your explanation/opinion. Thank you so much!!!
I got it from Peggi Kroll Roberts but I don’t thinks she’s making them any more. I use the mirror more than anything. You may can find some red plexiglass for the value finder. It just takes the color away so you can see the value pattern
WoW that’s a beautiful painting, I love all the details in there. It’s not a hot mess ;) I just love to see all your stages when painting. That big cat on the left is so cute. Totally love your enthousiasm when you like the painting :) have a nice weekend 💋 18:04 “My body can’t keep up with the amount of time I want to paint” Sadly I can totally ageer with you! My mind wants to paint for hours, but my body gives up after 30 min :(
Another great video and painting. I bought the Flashe paints a few weeks ago and have been trying them, really like them, but I think the way I apply them seem muted, muddy sometimes. Is it the gesso that helps on paper(I painted in sketch book and on various watercolor papers.) just curious how you keep yours so fresh and bright. Keep going, love the content.
Hmmmm, not exactly sure. I don’t gesso my pages very much. Did you go with colors I suggested? I have a video on picking colors for any medium so you won’t get muddied colors. The muted part might be from watering them down too much or not using enough paint - I use a lot of paint in any medium. I also do multiple layers. Hope some of this helps!
@@sandihester I bought the ones in the video yes, I think its a combo, water and I'll try layering more too. I also could be holding back on the paint. Thanks so much. I really do like them, thanks for suggestions, will get to trying that.
I actually haven’t painted in oils in a while because I developed allergies to them. In this video I’m using Flashe paint (a vinyl paint) and I’ve also been using acrylics - found a new one I’m loving that I’ll be sharing SOON
Hi Sandy. Wrong it was cool. You should have left it like it was... you never work on Art more than 1 hour or 1.5 hour. When you don t know you remove yourself. Come back one or two weeks later...it is impossible to work non stop... Thanky for Sharing...
This might not be the channel for you Keith if you want less chatter. It’s part of what I do - share what’s going on with my thoughts as I process out loud for my audience. They find it helpful.

Wow first time I have seen one of your videos and I love seeing your process. It can be daunting at times when you get to that messy stage can’t it? Thanks can’t wait to see the next installment.
Welcome Paula! I’m really glad you enjoyed it! Thank you!!
I have the same problem...my body does not keep up....But in the end we are getting there and having fun! And I love this painting!
Totally agree!
Your videos are so much fun! I love to watch them !! I hope the cat stays until the end, but we will have to wait another week to find out (this part I don't like I have to tell you, girl!😿). Until next time, Sandi! 😺
I cracked up at your comment - sorry you have to wait, and NO I'm not going to tell you if the cat stays - you'll have to wait :)
When Sandi adjusted the rug at the bottom, "I said out loud, "Sandi! Don't you touch my horse. I love that horse!" Lol! My horse? I hope O can wait patiently 🤪
@@MSKCCooke that is so funny! I like the horse too!
So fun to see your process!
Oh, good! I'm so glad to hear that!
Emily thank you so much! I loved seeing the pics you sent me of your son’s drawing. It really blesses me that y’all watch my videos together 😭❤️!!
Oh my gosh so fun! I love the whole process.
So glad 🤗
Can't wait to see the result next week.
thank you!
Best UA-cam content out there. Thank you for letting us into your artistic battle! It inspires me to keep going. Absolutely love the finished result. A few weeks I bought flashe paint because of you...its a dream to work with!! Thanks!
Wow, thank you! Ohhhh, I'm thrilled to hear you like the Flashe paint - woohoo! That company needs to pay me :) - they have so many new customers now!
Lol
Welcome! What - a Tennesseeian!!!!!! well, hey! So glad to have you here!
Hey Sandi I haven’t commented on your videos for a while so I thought I would say hello 💜 hope you’re having a great springtime so far!
Well, hello! I am enjoying the spring - thank you! Thanks for watching!
Today, I saw a woman that reminded me of you and I found myself thinking, I need to be Sandi. I love your style and creativity. For me, it's time for a career change. God bless 🙏 and thank you 😊.
Thank you ❤️❤️❤️
A woman after my heart...I save so many odd containers " in case"! I have at least 25 of those little cups. Mine came from cat food and fruit cups (same type). You are right about having to use Press and Seal. It is a pain but effective.
Love watching and hearing your thoughts about painting. The finished piece will be stunning, without a doubt!
Thank you! I’m a container collector for sure - drives grady crazy!
Love your colour choices!
thank you!
Incredible! Your bravery is inspirational!💗
Awe - thank you Lynda!
I like your Abstract style It reminds me of like " The Renaissance " style or also Whimsical style to me
You inspire me to get up and make Art Sandi .😀
Whoohooo - THRILLED to hear that!
I so know that feeling of my body can’t do anymore but I so want to do more that’s so hard. I so love love your videos I will be so sad when I’ve caught up thank you xxx
It’s life isn’t it. We can only do what we can. Thank you for your kind words ❤️
No doubt you know all this but here's the trailer link if you don't:

PS Are you planning a RENDR sketchbook review?
Thank you Katie! Yes, I'm a big fan of mary Fedden!
Happy day... made me smile.. ; )
whooohoooo! so glad to hear that!
Have you tried a wet palette? I did and I loved it, your paint stays wet for ages :)
I have. In fact, I recently made my own and I’m enjoying it
Those little cups with lids are at Dollar Tree- 6 or 8 in a package.
Ohhh, thank you!
I can relate to the body not being able to keep up with what my brain wants to do creatively!!
Yes, it’s a real thing!
@@sandihester Thank you! I will look into it. I hope you have a great weekend!
I like how you draw very much. Subbed.
Thank you and welcome!!
Thank you and WELCOME!
First 😋 Sandi you're listening? "it's beautiful" I love the kitty! ♥️
WoW that’s a beautiful painting, I love all the details in there. It’s not a hot mess ;) I just love to see all your stages when painting. That big cat on the left is so cute. Totally love your enthousiasm when you like the painting :) have a nice weekend 💋
18:04 “My body can’t keep up with the amount of time I want to paint” Sadly I can totally ageer with you! My mind wants to paint for hours, but my body gives up after 30 min :(
Thank you Deborah - I appreciate that! This is a part 1 video - I keep working on it for DAYS!!!!! more to come next week!
Thank you! I really appreciate that!
@@sandihester ♥️
I just love you!
🤗
How about "It wasn't going well... until it DID!" : ) A revised version.
I like it!!
@@renajuanita8747 I know it’s hard to use more paint but it really is one of the top things I see people not doing - using enough paint.
I love your videos. Thank you for sharing- I know you work in oils, can I ask what kind?
I actually haven’t painted in oils in a while because I developed allergies to them. In this video I’m using Flashe paint (a vinyl paint) and I’ve also been using acrylics - found a new one I’m loving that I’ll be sharing SOON
What sort of doggy is Cooper? I really like him.
He's a Korthal Griffon
@@sandihester thanks. He’s gorgeous.
Big canvases need big brushes. Bigger brush may force you to be less prescious.
I think it's great, so if you decide to scrap it, let me know! ;-) But the cat looks perfect to me. :)
Thank you! Haven’t scraped it YET
I like the painting but, I would like to see the table in a walnut color. It just seems to be too light.
An artists work is never done. Lol!
so true!
Hi Sandy. Wrong it was cool. You should have left it like it was... you never work on Art more than 1 hour or 1.5 hour. When you don t know you remove yourself. Come back one or two weeks later...it is impossible to work non stop... Thanky for Sharing...
More painting....less chatter, please
This might not be the channel for you Keith if you want less chatter. It’s part of what I do - share what’s going on with my thoughts as I process out loud for my audience. They find it helpful.
Maybe it’s female thing but we like the chatter.
