Still breaks my heart for Filatova. Taking nothing away from Bicherova, but back then, where you were put in the line up really did effect your scores, and the Soviets clearly gave Olga an advantage.

I don't mind taking away from Bicherova. She was overscored plain and simple. She was a lovely little gymnast, but this is like making Kerri Strug world AA champ in 1993.
Bicherova's 10.0 on vault is ridiculous. Even if you give the benefit of the doubt and say she's doing a 10.0 sv vault(when she's pretty obviously doing a 9.8 sv vault), she still has at least -0.20 in deductions (late turn and legs apart). Her UB was simple and lacked rhythm. I loved her floor choreo, but she had less steady landings than TO, but somehow got a better score.

@@matthewhines9787 Why do you think this happened? Do you think Soviet officials deliberately sabotaged Filatova (putting her first up when being first up really made a difference, and scores carried over)? Did they pick their own champion? Or did they favor Bicherova for her being from Moscow? It just seems so unfair to Maria, after her long service to the team as a team player. Or do you think they perhaps saw judges favoring Olga right from podium training and made a decision based on that? Or, I suppose, they simply didn't care, as long as a Soviet won.

Yes I read somewhere a teammate said she was favoured because she was from Moscow

@carolynrabbani6469 that is precisely what happened. The Soviet officials wanted Bicherova to win because she was from Moscow. Maxi Gnuack was the clear favorite for the title but she pretended to hurt herself during the her floor routine which kept her from advancing to the AA and FX finals. In exchange she was given gold medals for the three finals she qualified for. Ma Yanhong was also cheated out of the gold on bars that t the very least she should have tied for. If you look up info 81 worlds you will more than likely find articles about it.

@@matthewhines9787 Bichrova performed a tucked Cuervo for her vault which had a 10.0 sv until after 89-92 quad ended. Szabo used the same vault in 1984. The judges had a side view so the probably didn't see what we did. Either way, the Soviets set it up so she would win so even if they did see it they probably turned a blind eye to it.

Literally every time one of the Soviet AAs is congratulated by Arzhannikova, the commentators make a point of misidentifying her as Shishova. They're absolutely convinced its her but they look nothing alike.

run of the mill Bicherova did NOT deserve the amount of high scores she received. Filatova Yanhong and Ilienko were much more original and captivating than her

Not at all. She was pretty and that's why she was overscored.
