The Lorraine 40t in War Thunder is a French Medium Tank that is absolutely amazing! The problem is, it's a victim of its own success. It's so good it's now being moved up to 8.0 with the next minor update making it very inaccessible to your average player.
The Lorraine 40t has a 100mm cannon that fires solid shot with a 4 second reload. While this sounds really good on paper, it only has an 8 round drum so once all of those rounds are spent, it can take a long time to replenish them all. Around 2 minutes to replace the entire thing or 30 seconds from empty to being able to fire another shot. It's pretty awful in that regard.
It's sad to see that yet again great players have made the game less accessible to average players or casuals. But this is how these things go! :)

They also keep adding so many 1960s (or modern) SPGs, for some reason. They literally do not belong in the game at all lol.
Oh and all those mf super light armored cars with HEATFS, all from the 60s or later.
The M-50 Ontos somehow is 7.0 still able to see tiger 1s 😂. Gaijin doing the math alright.
Nations like Italy 🇮🇹 (that I play) really needed strange alternatives tanks to fill up it's ranks.

@@duncanmcgee13 Being able to fire 6 shots in under 5.0secs each is not “long reload”. If you miss 6 times with HEATFS in a downtier at 5.7 sounds like a you issue. You literally have guns on the sides of the hull bruh. Anyone who peaks you is DONE. Especially since most tanks hve mid mounted turrets with their weapons in the middle.
You realize the Lorraine also has paper armor? The M-18 has “paper armor”. Leopard 1s arguably have “paper armor”. But that’s a feature, not a bug, not a drawback. Those vehicles are fast with purpose. The Ontos imo has enough advantages to go up to 7.7, and be a niche vehicle away from Tiger 1s, Is-2s, and Sherman’s thank you very much.
I hate that my FAVOURITE 7.7 lineup is being absolutely killed off. Such a sad day.

I play mostly Japan and France, and this is just par for the course lol, they have to make one of the minor nations suffer each patch

As a french player I am very sad. 7.7 was already pretty brutal for this tank especially when you know that it used to be 6.7 when introduced.
Uh... 7.7 was already a BIG nerf (I leave every full uptier). 7.3 was the place.

It was 6.3 but it went to 6.7 pretty quickly after the Lorraine spam after release
The US T54E1 is basically a worse Surbasse, all it has going for it is unreliable APDS and HEAT with an extremely inaccurate gun and its 8.0 Its already bad, The french have mobility and gun handling but not good pen and you dont even have a rangefinder...
I do agree with the whole "good players raise the stats" argument as we've seen this happen with tanks like the jumbo 76 and others. However, I also think part of the reason (especially recently) is map design.
This thing is perfectly suited to small urban maps where its mobility is amazing, gun in reliable and reload means you can engage multiple targets at once.
Because we constantly see maps like Rhine, Japan, American Desert, etc. This thing excels while a tank like a tiger 2 or any other long range vehicle has less advantage.
Overall they need to switch the philosophy from balancing based on stats to instead improving things like maps to make them more playable for all types of vehicles.

It's not even an argument, anyone who's played for long enough will remember the time, (pre ground), when gaijin flat out admitted this is how they analyse what to move in BR. Failure to account for the global win rate of a player when factoring in their effect on a specific vehicles has been a problem literally since before jets were added.
Most maps have a long range spawn with little cover and hills suitable for sniper tanks such as Tiger and IS tanks. Then there are spawns near buildings for more CQC. Your argument matters naught because everyone picks the spawn for CQC. The majority of casual players who dont interact with the community just want to press W and get into WoT-style battles in cities.
we need much more bigger maps... its so annoying to play cqc with high tier (8.0+ br) tanks... it could be nice to have big maps where you can hide and actually use your lrf.... but new maps, i hate that gaijin makes old maps just a bit bigger like big tunesia
m36 shell at 8.0 against t54's has to be the funniest joke of the year yet, and the fact that the turm3 is basically a better french tank with a stab just one bracket higher is just the cherry on the top

It's M36's shell but at higher velocity, so it has 210mm of pen instead of the M36's 185mm. Turm 3 has stab, and 30mm autocannon, but has 5 second reload APDS / HEAT instead of 4 sec reload 210mm APHE / 270mm AP

The French Tree is miserable for so so so long it weeds out a lot of players. That means you see a French player at 5.3 or higher and you get scared.
I’m in no way an extremely good player, just above average and let me tell you. Playing France 5.3 with the m4(fl-10) and jumbo 75 is the second most disgusting thing I can do in the game. More often then not, I end up with 5+/0 KD.
If I see any minor tech tree at that br or higher I get scared, the players able to withstand low tier Italy scare me
@ryantrapp2189 As a casual player who mains Italy, I can say that unlike France, the Italian Tree is pure fun! Yes, there are a lot of tanks that are just garbage, but they are derpy enough to still be fun to play.

I have it - it plays exactly like the AMX M4, which is at 6.7 (soon 7.0....) with a bit more penetration. And still no APHE, APDS, Heat, etc.
It is a solidly good vehicle, but in no reasonable world does it deserve to be 8.0 where it can face 9.0 tanks that have fully stabilized guns, APFSDS, LRFs, composite armor, etc. This thing will be fighting the Object 279....

Remember that Gajin puts this tank from 1952 at the same BR as the K9 Thunder, that entered service in 1999 and have LRF and thermals
i used to love france 7.3/7.7 but with the br changes and sales everyone buys 8.7 prems like the T55AMD-1 and others and every time i play 7.7 france now i get 8.7 90% of the time and its just a awful experience, too bad thats where most of the fun mid tier tanks are :(
I main France, have played nothing but them since they were added. The pain isn't the constant BR shifts up, although that's a bother. And the French aversion to shell filler is a frustration. The real pain is being lumped in with all the major nation players who can only press w for victory. France only team, dammit. Or Minor Nations teams, at least.
Also, we get our real kicks in early on in the ter and with the sherman with the fl10 turret.

I've been playing a lot of 7.7 France including the 40t and the amx-50 and it's been a ton of fun, but the first stage ammo replenishment speed is abysmal for no reason. 20 seconds for the loader to load one round is ridiculous.
And when you shoot, it resets as if the loader put the round back into the hull and pick it back up to insert into the clip😂

Couldn’t agree more, I’m playing 7.7 US and the the uptiers are *brutal*. MBTs with stabilizers and heat out the gate, and the long reloads on my tanks don’t help either. Facing ATGMs in the slow ass M103 sucks too.

I own the entire 7.7 lineup, premiums included. They are fantastic monsters, but the fact that these things will soon see 9.0 russian tanks, which the 100mm's can't handle, let alone the tanks at 8.7 we already face, which it's constantly dragged up to due to russia's massive lineup there as well... it's just gonna kill the tanks, period. We already have the brenus at 8.7 and that's not stabilized, yet it's just as effective as the T-55's at that same exact br to gaijin?
dont worry, BC 25t facing obj 279 is very playable.
7.7 is the second highest downtier rate with only a 4% chance of getting full uptiered based on thousands of matches analyzed

The Lorraine 40t CAN carry games… so long as they’re 7.7 or 8.0 games. Full uptiers is just struggle city. If you’re looking for a good plane to back up the (now extinct) 7.7 lineup, the MD 450 Barougan is quite good. Turns very well and gets a pair of SNEB pods.
7.7 France was my safe space! I prefer the Surbaisse, my most reliable heavy tank killer, was so fun during the anniversary where there were hoards of maus. I liked the Lorraine, I just can’t stand how long it takes to reload the drum

being aggressive and playing around the points is my favorite thing to do in the amx-50 series and lorraine 40t, the improved reload speed is so good, since you are likely burning through your whole rack while taking/keeping the point.
These 3 tanks are my favorite lineup in all War thunder. The AMX 50 and Char are such fantastic tanks and are a complete blast to play. I have 2.0 (400/200) K/D with the Char, a 1.5 K/D with the Premium AMX50, and a 1.0 K/D with the Lorraine and regular AMX 50. The change from 7.3 to 7.7 annoyed me but they moved a bunch of other tanks up as well so it was fine. Both BRs seemed to get a decent amount of Downtiers. 8.0 is god awful tho with nothing but uptiers, so its really frustrating to see this change, can't wait to face nothing but stablized, dart slinging MBTs. Truly suffering from success lol
with this patch they will be removing the 7.0 lineup which was the only fun thing about france even though youd lose a lot

Not played that much either too nowadays. Normally I see the AMX-50 (100mm and 90mm variants), Char 25T and Somua mostly used. Where did they get the stats to determine the Lorraine needs an up BR? Also the fact that there's normally only 1-2 French players in a full team.
Yeah, France had a really great mid-BR line-up in spite of the oscillating turrets and Gaijin's insistence on minimizing spalling in solid shot. I loved all the lights, the mediums, and the heavies in the original 6-8 range. A more conventional tank with solid shot at 8.0 though? Laughable. Glad I am at 8.3+ in this tree now. The AMX-13 has gone through the same crap in several trees. I was working the Israeli tree the other day, and fighting Tiger II's with the AMX-13 is, quite simply, ridiculous,

Absolutely spot on explanation of BR stat effect of very proficient users. See plenty of tiger2p that are with low level players as it's a "starter nation" and the same with the US and Russia, they get needlessly wiped out cause poor decisions etc. So, some vehicles BR reflects more reflect players than the actual tank itself.
Either weight the stats by the players' general performance or normalise the states to high proficient users like yourself.

i recently got into the french tanks with the Somua and play all of them in the 7.7 lineup, including the Lorraine. I Love them and hate that I breaks apart my lineup
the chat 25t is one of my most played tanks and i love it. that being said i haven't played it much since last time it got moved up to 7.7
In 8.7 uptiers, you just run away when you see a russian MBT because they are immune to your 200mm of pen. Gotta flank like a SPAA

I was surprised just how good the Lorraine was when i first got it. I hardly remember ever getting 0 kill games in it cause the reload is so good, it penetrates so much, and the solid shot AP inflicts so much damage. Not only that, it’s also fast with neutral steering
the 7.7 line-up for france is pretty monstrous but, they're ALL wobbly bois. This is something that can really hurt in an uptier unless you can find the good position to take advantage of a stable aim.
The ammo in this and the AMX 50 works awesome but can bounce pretty strangely sometimes (like everything else when the snail says, "nope").
Mobility is awesome and turret swing is really nice.
It is like you say -- either do pretty great or woefully bad :D
PS -- I actually have a question that I hope that either you or Mr Spookston might know the answer to -- Why is it when the first stage runs out, rounds are not manually fed into the chamber as with other auto loaded vehicles?? You're just forced to become a paperweight for a while.
I got a talisman for this thing out of a crate way back when it was 6.something and it got me through the entire French tech tree.

I LOVE the Lorraine 40t. It’s such a good tank. Fast (ish). Can (sometimes) bounce shots. Fires so fast. And does good damage, the vast majority of my deaths in it are either a result of cas or having an empty ready rack.
it took them like 8 years to move the Leo up to a sensible br and about 3 seconds to move Frances already heavily struggling mid-high tier tanks

The problem I find is that WT bypasses the postwar AP/APHE/APCR meta wherever possible. Vehicles that were designed for it but never upgraded for the following Sabot/HEAT era are left in a very awkward balancing scenario. They stomp if they're the slightest bit too low, but all the things that should be their contemporaries have been given late-in-life upgrades that leave them in the dust.
I got my first Nuke in the Lorraine 40t, will forever be my first love
This was my favorite tank. When it came out at 6.7 i used it constantly for 2 months and my stats are 1698 kills and 647 deaths.

I feel like Gaijin's way of 'balancing' tanks just punishes newer players trying to get into minor nations like France, because the tanks are balanced with the assumption that the person playing it will be very skilled. Switching from playing mostly Germany to playing more French vehicles was really difficult and annoying, and although now that I'm more skilled with French tanks it isn't nearly as bad, and I do far better far more often, Gaijin constantly raising the BRs of tanks like the Char 25t really screws over the majority of French mains, especially those newer to the nation.
@ 10:54 that is the thickest armor section of the T-54 mod. 1947, and since he had the turret angled off to 45deg of your LOS, it made it even thicker. If you hit even 6in to the right, you would have likely penned.

What really gets me with the br changes is the bc25t going to 8.0 while the obj906 stays 7.7. Bad players mean gaijins balance method wont work:*

That LeKPz M41 is such an MVP, instantly tried to help, when the situation got too dangerous he retreated but still put a smoke screen up, so Odd can repair more peacefully

I just started playing 7.7 France the amx 50 to90 premium is so much fun to play it's such a great line-up. They don't even have enough pen to kill anything from in front.
Just got to this point in the french tech tree, really enjoying it and it's now being up br'd 😭
The best part of being an Italian, japan, and French player is every patch just makes my fav trees harder to play! Meanwhile Germany and Russia are on average 1-2BR under tiered across the board T.T

I don’t know if many people knew this or not, but if you run outta ammo in an auto loader and then go into a cap that you have all ammo that gets refilled will go directly into the auto loader almost completely negating the insane reload times for them
I hate that my favorite 7.3 lineup was moved to 7.7 and now to 8.0. I constantly get up tiered with this thing and it struggles like you said with shots at the fronts of tanks. This move to 8.0 will make them unplayable.

I don't have it just yet but I am on my way to the Lorraine 40t but I do go up against them here & there and man I get so annoyed because majority of the players who are using them are quite impressive and definitely know utilize the tank to its fullest advantage.

Aside my RU591, the 40T is the weapon of choice for some good early sniping fun. I oversaw the French tree for a long time but is now my second fav
when they were 7.3 and 7.7 i got consistent and common nukes at 8.7-9.7 cause of using it(lorraine, char 25t and amx50) with the amx30 dca and eventually the 105mm 4s reload thermal SK105 or smthn.
always loved the lorraine for the feel of that thumpy and sharp 100mm gun with a sleek reload on a great looking and super mobile, oversized (but nifty) light tank.
loved the sense of being a neat lil fox but eventually stopped playing cause of the constant fckn revenge bombing, felt like it got worse and worse, which in turn got me to be more anxious and careful and that in turn made me too slow to catch and put down people before they got enough points for planes and helis.
like a vicious cycle that gaijin did nothing to stop, turns out warthunder isnt worth it for me atleast but holy damn i could shoot that sht up like H, straight up my veins, miss that addictive feeling.
also Oddb the HE on the lorraine and other french 100mms cant overpressure stuff like the rooikat, bmps or sheridans many places but some years ago they changed the way HE works sometime after adding overpressure, so that it gets an AP effect too, slight but with the french 100mms it got like 30mm or 31mm of pen and great angled performance at close range, like some sort of insane SAP shell. rooikat is like 25mm plates all around.
7.7 France is the lineup that I got one of my very few nukes in. Can't say I'm too happy to see it go up though, that match was hard fought

been playing this thing since it was 6.7
its been increasingly difficult to do well in it but doing well often means a 10 kill game
however, when fully uptiered, it can make one feel like Sisyphus, achieving next to nothing for lots of effort
Also yes Bawz for some reason smoke grenades and barrels have the same audio as ATGMs and rockets for some reason
I saw those cool French tanks at 7.7 so i decided to start grinding France. Because i am a casual player it took pretty long and now when i am finally about to get the vehicles they are being uptiered😐
The Lorraine 40 T is definitely my favorite tank, the 4 sec auto reload, the quickness and the reverse speed of it is amazing. I have gotten a nuke with it just because Russian mains are sometimes blind. But now that the Lorraine 40 T is going to 8.0 even though it’s been through hell at 7.7, with the massive silver lion when you die. One of the best French tanks you can play.
And as a French main the Char 25 T that is also getting moved up since it was 6.7 with only AP and not apcbc, it was good for what it was. I don’t remember when the char 25 T got the 4 second reload but I do remember that it had a 6.5 second autoloader system which was pretty mid tbh. The Lorraine and Char are probably the best tanks in the French tree you can use. Now that it is going to 8.0, it already seeing T55AM’s, now that it can see the T62AM, XM-803, M60 TTS, Leo a1a1, type 74, ZTZ88, PTL02, and the AFT09. These all have laser range finders while the Lorraine, Char and Amx don’t have a laser range finder. And the drops on these shell are horrible. But now they destroy them. I really call BS and Gayjin’s part because of this.
this lineup i play myself every now and then, i either end up top of the team or bottom, there is no in between.

ah yes the staple tryhard tanks of war thunder, dont see em very often but when you do its the sweatiest goblin you ever did see.
As a German main, coming to the French mid tree, I was so pleasantly surprised how it plays out. It's one of if not the most fun I've had in game. Curious to see wha this change will do to my French playstyle.

Lorrain 40t is my favorite tank so far but as I'm playing it alongside the AMX30s and it still stand pretty strong

France 7.7 was definitely one of the strongest in the game, but, it also can really struggle in uptiers against Russian heavies. I'm worried that moving them up to 8.0 will just make the uptiers even more insufferable
Honestly me and my boys are currently having a really good time and doing really well in France 7.7 and were decent players so this is in a small part our fault.
Yup, normally experienced players play France and they do well so it makes the stats of these vehicles looks amazing. All the newbies and less skilled players plays nations with great vehicles but the BR don't change because the stats aren't great due to the said players.
40t is awesome, have one of the best kd on it, but played more with 50t90 and 25t which now I kinda regret knowing it's getting moved up.
Playing France has bought forth some of the most anger I have ever experienced in my hundreds of hours of War Thunder, and I am only BR 4.0...
I've actually been playing a lot of 7.7 France, yeah the vehicles are good but only in a full down tier, the bat chat still has a hard time with anything more armored in the front than a panther. Absolutely blows my mind that something I've been struggling to make work is overpowered?
I personally love the Char 25T (I've played it so much that I recently aced its crew even) and while I think it's very solid, it's indeed very sensitive to what BR it faces.
I can understand that they don't want it to constantly get downtiered to 6.7 but if it gets moved to 8.0 it will constantly get in 8.7 and 9.0 matches against Soviet vehicles (speaking from experience with an 8.0 Swedish setup) and that's already bad enough with most nations as stabilizers are rare at 8.0 and even 320mm and 400mm pen HEATFS struggle with a significant amount of the Soviet tanks present at 8.3 or greater, let alone vehicles like the Char 25T that barely gets more than 200mm of pen.
If they decompressed the BRs beyond it as well this would be a perfectly fine change, but they're not doing that so they're effectively killing France around this BR. And the rest of the French ground tree already struggles enough, this was the one spot in it that's generally considered solid and why most people grind the tree to begin with.
