The legendary Gilbert and Sullivan troupe the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company joined forces with Hollywood for this 1939 Technicolor version of the beloved comic opera The Mikado, the first work by the famed duo to be adapted for the screen.
I cannot believe it I grew up with this recording..........my ears remember every breath....every sigh.....I am having an eargasm!!!!!!!!!

It amazes me to think that original cast members Jessie Bond and Durward Lely were still alive when this was made.
After all those years listening to him on the Jack Benny Program, I finally get to find out what Kenny Baker looks like! In fact, I recall one episode where he mentions going away to film this movie for Alexander Korda! There's my one reason to pick up the Mikado!

You have other reasons. Martyn Green was one of the great D'Oyly Carte comedians. He's in it. Kenny Baker seems to me to be an underrated performer of the time -- dismissed as a mere "crooner." Why "crooner" should be a pejorative mystifiies me. The voice speaks for itself (pun intended).
And wasn't Bing Crosby a "crooner?" To take a Monty Python stance, I think "art critics" ought to blow it out their collective asses.

When you see the film I think you'll find other reasons you'll be happy you did. You'll find the Gilbertian demand that good diction is paramount (the words are as important as the music) is followed.
true! I was amazed when I first watched it that I needed no subs at all, while musicals nowadays, it's like lyrics are of no importance whatever. You can pick out a word here and there, but often it might as well be in Greek or Italian like any Opera or tragedy.

What is it with all these "racist" accusations? It is a comic opera! As with all G&S productions, this one was written to poke good natured fun at British society and governance, but do it with beauty of music and performance. Let's all get a grip - and a sense of humor.

well, the racist accusations are mostly from people who haven't seen it, don't get the joke that it's about the British, and have only read the original libretto (which uses the N-word a few times, including, most notably, in the Mikado's song "Let the Punishment Fit the Crime"

I love how perfectly it makes fun of Japan.
More like uses a Japanese setting to skewer 1880's British society. It's not exactly Madama Butterfly. It's not meant to be an accurate reflection of Japan. It's just meant to use a bit of Orientalism to make the mocking of British conventions easier for the audience to swallow.
Kinda like a Rigoletto situation, but intentional.
