My 5700XT can do 2.2GHz, my RTX2070 before it died did 2055MHz, and Der8auers RX 6800XT Red Devil did 2.7GHz. I think Wendell had a brainfart, I mean, he did call it a 3090 twice just after that :D
I AM SO HAPPY he talked about "capacitor gate" and how the issue wasn't with the capacitors, it was with the stock boosting algorithm in the driver.... the stock capacitors were fine, Nvidia set the boost too high for the stock capacitor design. There was NOTHING wrong with the capacitors. EVGA simply stated they wanted a more robust design because they CHOSE to because "overclocking." And if Nvidia's stock boost was "too high" those lower end card that weren't OC, ended up OC, and it couldn't handle it due to power delivery. Which is also an issue with power supplies. I myself have a 3950x radeon vii (rip r7, now on a 1080ti until I can get my hands on a 6900xt) and both were overclocked to sin on an 850w psu that I have had for years. The pc would crash in certain scenarios, either just the gpu or the whole system. I made sure drivers weren't the issue, reinstalled windows. Double checked my overclocks. Nothing seemed wrong. Now some might have argued "you overclocked too high" but I put it to you, the 850w psu wasn't enough. I could care less what gamers nexus or hardware unboxed claims for power usage. They don't know shit. I switched from that 850w to a 1300w, same overclocks, and everything was working flawlessly. No crashes, no black screens. Now some people at that point would claim the 850w was "bad" and I didn't need to go to 1300w.... well I put that 850w into another system which isn't overclocked to sin and isn't using high end parts, and it runs flawlessly.... so clearly the psu isn't bad. Which again, proves my point. Another thing, last time I checked, the "kill-a-watt" wall wort states it reads in RMS values. It doesn't read peak, if it actually read peak, the unit would melt.... its not designed to handle that kind of load. So when GN or HU tested using the kill-a-watt and got 535w with a 10900k oc'd with 2080ti, what they were actually getting was 755w of used power. The kill-a-watt reading RMS, needs to be multiplied by 1.41 to find the peak, and even then can still be under what is actually being pulled. And they go around telling people "yes, 10900k and 3080, a 550w psu is more than enough" and then people crash, crying that nvidia sucks and its all nvidia's fault, and capacitors. When its their own god damn stupidity which caused the issue.... People on reddit always cry "anecdotal" but that is just their way of ignoring proof positive that they are wrong.... my buddy had a 8700k and titan gpu (the first nvidia titan) and only a 450w psu because "pcpartpicker suggested it." I don't frequent that website so I don't know if they have changed. However, he noticed in every game, his gpu core clocks were low, and his fps was insanely low, lower than his 1060 6gb he had before it. He tried everything, until finally he messaged me to help him figure it the fuck out. And of course, the first thing I asked was power, he said 450w and I said "that's it, get at least an 800w".... so he ran to best buy, bought an 800w gold evga psu.... returned home, installed it, and booted his pc. His clocks now went to max as they should, and his fps nearly tripled. I happen to remember his counter strike global offensive numbers. He was getting 145fps MAX with the 450w psu, no crashes, just insanely low fps and his gpu was stuck in a low power state (hence low clocks). After his new psu, he magically boosted to max clocks and got 400+fps all day long with super smooth gameplay. Lack of power doesn't always mean hard crashes.... but of course, the reddit community "knows everything" in their god damn echo chamber. Its just sad. We live in a world where popular opinion means more than raw facts.... On that note, Nvidia stated requiring stronger, larger psu's for the 3000 series. They changed their "recommended" power supply numbers to "REQUIRED" (just check their website). Why would they do that? because its REQUIRED. The 2080ti failures, where blamed on Nvidia, when it was actually assholes like gamers nexus and the rest of the retard tech community that was trying to run the 2080ti on low wattage psu's. Lack of power can 100% kill a gpu. I know, I have first hand knowledge with my radeon vii. Now some will claim it was the overclock that killed it, but I say it was the lack of power causing spikes and issues inside the gpu which fried it. The damage was long done before I switched to my new 1300w. Nvidia went as far as to develop a new power connector HOPING that PSU manufacturers will adopt it into their standard design. WHY? Because they are tired of morons daisy chaining a single cable from the psu to the gpu or running low wattage psu's. They can FORCE psu manufacturers to only use the new 12 pin connection on say 650w psu or larger. This way, they control the stupid tech community. Which is why I love Level1Techs, no bullshit, no fluff, no lies. Just pure tech and truth.... Keep up the good work Wendell and crew.
MSI makes the best gfx cards imo. This card is a good example of that. I am pretty happy with my current 2070 super Gaming X trio, but these new MSI suprim cards look so dann good that I just ordered one!

i managed to get one for regular price at micro center and boy is this gpu a beast in games the clock speed reaches near 2ghz mark easily without msi afterburner tuning and temps staying below 70
Wendel can you tell us who are the "bad" guys messing up the RTX 3000 pricing right now? Is it Hynix with the monoply on GDDR6X? Is it the boardpartners overbidding each other? Is it the retailers overbidding each other? Or do the retailers / boardpartners / nvidia just use the scalping prices as an excuse to offer the cards at a 30-50% premium over the msrps. This card seems like the best RTX 3080 right now, 800A VRM isn't the highest but the cooler is the largest and it absolutely has the highest power limiter out of all at 430W. Seems like they addressed all the concerns I had with the Trio, which had a mediocre VRM and a large but not the best performing cooler and a super low power limit of 350W.

I just beat most of those Blender scores with my "factory settings" PNY XLR8 Epic-X 3080 - R7 3700X - 32 gig (4x8) 3600 Ballistix. BMW - 23s classroom - 1m6s fishy cat - 49s Koro - 1m16s Pavilion - 2m18s Victor - 4m29s Don't know why the PNY's get no love from the tech channels. Runs great, not overly flashy. I did mount a mirror under it so the bottom facing rgb faces outward. It hides all the wiring at the bottom of the mobo too.

nice really appreciative of a chonky heat sink impressive card with the 3090 version I'd personally like to see what you get out of it in afterburner I manage dto get the 3090 trio and it is really good at only a 102.7% on the power target I exceeded the 2 ghz mark with out even trying the memory OC's immensely also 700mhz offset for the day to day could probably push more but I've been busy with life stuff lol

Why are you getting into the epeen contest? 'Will this gpu break the sound barrier?' I much prefer when you review hardware and reveal its shortcomings (like for example when you revealed how the intel 2.5g chip had a flaw in the silicon. Do you have any idea how many posts in how many forums are about this freakin ethernet plug on the back of their pc causing heartache?) All the superlatives you layered onto the MSI 'suprim' will allow MSI to boost the MSRP. beyond reason. For example, I remember when aftermearket Radeon cards were $50-100 more than the reference card. (~5-10% premium) Today the aftermarket cards are 30% more and up. (see a review about the 'red devil' 6800xt). I would prefer if you showed us how to leverage a 2070super with a pencil mod. Or as buildzoid did, simply showing how repasting a card can improve performance. Please show us how to make the hardware we have, MORE USEFUL, instead of telling us that we need to go out and get the latest greatest hardware. Why are you improving MSI's bottom line by hundreds of thousands?
5950x is probably equal to or better then a 11900k/10900k 🤔. Using it with a 3080 or 3090 will help get you more out of gaming AND workstation productivity 😃👍.

oof the gpu support is making the card flex hard the opposite way, and everything sub 150 fps is choppy at best you dont need to be a pro gamer to see that.
@yt 1234 I couldn't use the one that came with due to fans. I have the Lian Li PC-O11 Dynamic XL case with fans at the bottom. I actually took some pieces of lego and placed on the fan frame to support the card :p

I getting a little fed up of cards costing this much and still covered in partly cheap plastic. I don't like the Asus Strix ROG for the cheap looking plastic around the fans, I don't like the huge amount of cheap looking plastic on the Aorus cards, MSI gets the closest to premium material construction so far, but whyyyyy, please if your going to cover a GPU in mostly metal do the whole thing and do it right. Do you corps not learn at all. Asking more and more money and constructing with cheap materials, You should be ashamed.

@yt 1234 I couldn't use the one that came with due to fans. I have the Lian Li PC-O11 Dynamic XL case with fans at the bottom. I actually took some pieces of lego and placed on the fan frame to support the card :p

How good is msi for gpu quality and reliability? I’ve seen some sketch warranty stories but I really want to keep my cards. Rookie mistake I bought two thinking I could sli but turns out sli is not a thing so if anyone is in Canada and wants a card at msrp message me !

Nvidia does better in terms of apps. That is insane.
I getting a little fed up of cards costing this much and still covered in partly cheap plastic. I don't like the Asus Strix ROG for the cheap looking plastic around the fans, I don't like the huge amount of cheap looking plastic on the Aorus cards, MSI gets the closest to premium material construction so far, but whyyyyy, please if your going to cover a GPU in mostly metal do the whole thing and do it right. Do you corps not learn at all. Asking more and more money and constructing with cheap materials, You should be ashamed.
