"Dress for the woman you are today" really resonated with me. I have been needing to go through my closet for AGES, but it's so overwhelming for me and I have THE GUILT. So many things I buy and don't wear, and I've had to force myself to change my style now that I'm in my mid 20s because I still tend to wear styles I did in my teens. I have a baby face too, so I still get mistaken as a teenager. You've inspired me to finally go for it and be bold!! Thanks girl ❤
Me too. That is going to help me with my decluttering I hope. My spare bedroom is ridiculous with stuff from me trying to declutter. I need to do it badly so I will keep that in mind and ask myself if I would really wear or use items now being who I am now.
I totally understand about getting rid of items associated with someone we've lost. They don't bring the person back but they do bring back "something" -- a memory, a feeling, a scent. Tough choice.
Same SAME! with the "I'm just not that girl anymore" 💗 I recently did a big closet purge too and it feels sooo good! Apparently, for me, being 46 means I now require all my undies & socks to be the exact. same. ones - everybody else got to get recycled 😆 Cheers to being authentically our Now selves, even if Then us had way cuter stuff in her closet.
I could care less if my clothes are in style or out of style, and I keep my clothes for years. My struggle in replacing clothes that are too worn to wear or that no longer fit is finding quality clothes with which to replace them. All my go-to brands have significantly gone down in quality. New clothes don’t last like they used to. 😢
Totally hear you…I’d rather try to hold onto the “quality” item for one day if it doesn’t fit now whether too big or too small rather than let it go to replace it. I’m 47 as well and have no idea where to shop as as most stores or department stores seem to me for me and then of course lots seem to young for me. And I’m not a professional yet a homemaker who does not want to live in leggings all day. Help
I agree. I found it so difficult to find things I like in the shops of good quality that I went shopping at the charity/recycling shop and had such a great time! Got loads of really great stuff and it didn’t cost much.
I needed to see this, because I’m at a point where my closet is full, yet I don’t even go anywhere anymore, and more than half the items I don’t wear, but think, if in a certain situation, then I’ll wear a particular item.
I literally am just finishing up. Got through the clothes I have stored away. Got rid of almost 3 13 gallon bags. This is my 4th declutter in the span of 7 years. I feel so happy. Going through whats inside my dresser and closet. I feel so accomplished. I am going to really go for a no buy clothes for the next year.
Same here. I've gone through several times, and recently decided to let go of my smallest size because I don't think I'll fit them again. ( menopause has done a number on my body )
Organized Soprano / Kay...Darn Tough socks have a lifetime warranty. If they ever get a hole, just contact them online for a replacement! Your dad gave you an amazing gift!!!
I stumbled across pop up boutique one day, they gently encouraged me to try things on, no pressure. I looked at my old things on the floor of the changeroom and didn't even want to put them back on, they looked like rags. I suddenly realised I'd been wearing them for 10 years. I also realised the dark moody colours I rocked in my younger years did not reflect the woman I am today. It did hurt to let things go that I'd loved, mostly because I'd got so little wear out of them, and there's another lesson: wear your stuff! Don't live in the same old outfits.
I came across this video looking for decluttering inspiration and I just keep listening to it because I feel like it’s really connecting with the issues I’m having with my closet. I always feel guilty letting go of 1. things I used to love but don’t wear anymore or 2. things that technically fit but there’s some tiny little thing that makes me not wanna wear it (don’t love the fabric, not stretchy enough, some seam or band digs in a little, etc). The first feels like letting go of an old friend and the second just feels wasteful. But I’m trying to be kind enough to myself to let go of stuff that my current self doesn’t feel good wearing, even if that means letting go of former staple pieces, giving up on things that are still “good,” or spending money on new things. Thanks for sharing your process; hearing you talk through it has been really helpful!
Oh man. Thank you so much for sharing this, I'm having so many of the same feelings about the contents of my wardrobe - this was exactly the push I needed. Thank you for being so raw and real and open. I cannot even begin to tell you how deeply I related to everything you said. Thank you, thank you.
SO good to have another video from you! I was forced to do a serious and rather rapid declutter of my wardrobe, after moving to my tiny apartment. The closet is really small, so I purchased a three drawer unit, and down sized to a true capsule wardrobe - I hated doing this, especially in such a hurry, yet the benefits have been wonderful: I can find items in the dark, nothing is stuffed into a tight space, and everything works with everything, since I limited colours to navy, white, black plus blues and purples. These colours make me happy! It meant having fewer shoes as well, another perk when you have nowhere to store several pairs! Thanks for your always helpful, honest and constructive videos! You are a blessing!!!
Thanks for a wonderful video. I have been going through my clothes and cleaning out my closet for the past year on and off. Only recently have I made some good process, which included treating myself to some new clothes that feel like the me I am now. I also really resonated with you when you mentioned how you saw some clothes from the past and felt like "who IS that girl?" We all change and grow as we get "wiser". It's not easy to let go of the past. We are a combination of that girl we once were, and, who we have grown and become. I could feel your pain in getting rid of things. I too have that problem. Sometimes it feels nearly impossible, especially those pieces that bring back memories.
This was so real and helpful. I'll be turning 50 this year and I've been eliminating a lot of younger clothing and synthetic fabrics like polyester (fleece) and acrylic sweaters. I have some shoulder issues and heat fluctuations with perimenopause, so I rarely wear sweaters because cardigans work so much better for me in this stage of life. I'm actually looking forward to my grandma era!
I feel you on the underbuying thing. I spent 6 months being mildly annoyed constantly because I had one nice water thermos for the gym that I loved but a terrible spilly one for the tea I drank in the morning and drive. Instead of buying a second nice one for $25 I spent over 6 months just dealing with a too small leaky one because it felt like a waste. The old one was ONLY 4 years old and dented and didnt sit quite flat and the lid was cracked 😅
Great video. I’m also decluttering my clothes and shoes. When I get overwhelmed, I’m going to hear you in my head saying “we’re going to be ok, it’s ok.” 💚✨
I’ve been trying to find someone on UA-cam to watch to start inspiring and helping me with decluttering and minimizing my stuff in my home… so many of the lovely women on YT who talk about these things were just so hard for me to connect to and apply it to my own life… But the first video of yours I clicked on, you had on a Zelda shirt and you spoke about “dealing with your mail piles” and I was like-oh, she might be who I’ve been looking for 😅 And then you saying “My animal crossing socks have a hole, they have to go… I’ll buy more animal crossing socks” really hit home LOL and I thought to myself… “She’s right. I need to throw them out. I can get NEW animal crossing socks.” New follower for sure 😂❤
I appreciate your transparency and taking that step for yourself. 💕I also went through the same thing and I felt some sadness, but I want my mature self to thrive now ❤. It was time to do me ☺️
This is the first video of yours I've ever seen. So grateful the algorithm sent you to me! You did great and I love that you shared your thoughts. only 2 weeks ago i decluttered my enormous, stored clothing bins. 12 huge bags later I still have loads but they are now contained only in 4 bins, rather than everywhere. I have a goal of losing a size by the end of August and then I'll declutter my size 18s. I did go through my current sized clothes and kept only what I really liked. Feels so nice to wear clothes that make you feel like yourself! PS Your fleeced lined jeans are fantastic!
I totally understand how difficult it is to get rid of clothes that are part of your past self, but it is natural for your style to change over time. Embrace it and replace them with things you will really love yourself in now.
You’re back! I’m in desperate need of new clothes too. Finding clothes that fit properly AND getting them delivered has been a struggle. Older women don’t want to dress matronly. We (all) also don’t want to wear clingy, see through, too short everything. Like, what is going on? If you’re plus sized, forget about it.
Oh my gosh Kay! I can relate to you throughout this whole video! You have inspired me to go through my closet tomorrow! You did such a great job talking through the thought process and following through with only keeping what you like and what your body deserves! I have bras that the straps keep coming off! Do I toss them? Oh no, just today I chose not to wear them yet again and stuffed them back in the drawer! I can’t throw them away, I paid a lot of money for them! 🙄 I just realized that the money is already spent so keeping them just takes up valuable space and doesn’t give me a bra I deserve or my money back, so I am tossing them! I have one bra that works well and she is old! They stopped making it and I have been struggling to find a replacement but it’s time to hit the stores again! Thanks for the inspiration, Kay!
Your timing is so perfect. I just switched rooms and there was so much that I don't use. I was about to put de-cluttering on my Notion to-do list, hahahah, but then saw your video and immediately started sorting socks with you. :) By the way, I currently work at TCS so talk about organizing all day long and like you, people ask whether my home is organized. I always say it means I never stop organizing, that it's never finished nor perfect and I have to be okay with that. :) Thanks for the inspiration!
Love this. I need to serve my 50-yr old self better too. I still have my corporate wear, unflattering clothes and hard clothes and you’ve reassured me it will be hard but feel good.
Thank you for sharing! In case it hasn't been noted yet, Darn Tough socks have a lifetime guarantee. If the socks your father gave you eventually wear out, you can visit the company website and get a replacement pair. Thanks again for sharing this video!
We go through different seasons of our life and our tastes in clothes change. I consign anything that is in excellent condition, donated what is a bit older and throw away what is trashed. I shop second hand and buy new for things I need in sizes that fit me know.
I've purchased second hand clothes from threadup and they have a final-sale at the lowest price and they are nonreturnable. I have probably 10 items from them in my closet that either don't fit or don't flatter me and I'm so mad because I paid money for them and only tried them on the once when I got them. I need to get over it and get some new clothes, like you. We hate spending money on ourselves but we are worth it. I know we are.
You did such a good job. I also struggle to let go of past clothing choices. We are the same age, and my style is evolving. I have too much lounge wear that I do not want to wear out of the house, as well as a work wardrobe. At least 80% of my clothing is unworn, due to never going anywhwete. Plus I have items of 3 different sizes. Time for me to figure out my crap, and lose the weight or lose the too small clothes.
I've been putting off new shoes for at least two months, because ever since I left my former hotel night audit, I'm basically broke. But, after three walks, and returning with blisters, it was visually clear to me, I needed new shoes. My fiance is helping me look for decent ones tomorrow. It definitely doesn't help that I'm an 11 in women's, and it's so hard to find shoes my size in stores. Wish me luck!
I felt that "damnit!" I bought new jeans and I always wash them before wearing them. Well, the downside is that after wearing a full day, I realize they're too big! 🙃 They stretch throughout the day and aren't as snug as the beginning of the day.
Thank you for this, and sharing your process :) I recently let go of a pair of shorts that were 30+ years old (not a typo)...LL Bean jeans that I cut off into shorts back when I was in college (and I'm 51 now). Loved them, they held up for that long-which isn't the case for new clothing, alas. But they had simply become uncomfy, too tight at the waist, so I had to acknowledge reality & give them away-but it was emotionally really difficult. Also let go of a bra whose band had gotten a bit too snug, bc each time I would put it on I would immediately take it back off bc of it being intolerably uncomfortable. It was in great condition, no ick-just too tight for my present body.
Oh, Kay! This visit was much too short! Miss seeing you 💐 Thanks for the motivation, and the great questions to work through! Please make another video very soon. Don’t wake Clover up, but tell him we were asking for him 🐶 ❤
That was great inspiration, Kay! I too want to love every thing in my wardrobe. (Thanks for the heads up on the audio, even though it wasn't that bad.)
Lol so funny you’re struggling with decluttering even though you’re a professional organizer! You did great!! It looks like you take good care of your things. There was a period of time where I didn’t buy things because I already had clothes, I think I’m back there again lol. I need to declutter too!
Thanks for this video, I relate to it so much! Anthro clothes have certainly been the hardest for me to part with. They remind me of a time when I would save for a while to buy a special piece or obsessively stalk the sales. I still have so much Anthro blogger inspo saved in Pinterest! But most of those clothes no longer fit me or my style so I've been slowly decluttering them. P.S. I hope this isn't weird, but you're in one of the inspo pics I have pinned --didn't realize it until long after I started watching your channel! 😊
Love this video! Your content is so relatable. ROTFL about the fleece-lined sweat pants for those freezing Boston mornings when the dog must be walked. It’s so easy to become attached to material things and so challenging to let go of them, even though it feels so good when the process is completed.
Thank you for all the talking it out loud. It really helps to hear the reasoning because we all have the same reasons ! Could you declutter other parts of your house in the same way??? Would love to see it.
The eternal puzzle is why we put things that are ripped or broken back in the drawer instead of getting rid of them right away. Like they’re going to magically self-repair!
@@rvanderjagt5944I saw a comment on another decluttering video where they said they want nice loungewear. They don’t see anyone while wearing it, but they don’t want the gross bleach stained ones. They said they deserve better. It’s true, you can only downgrade so many clothes before they’re all grungy
Yay! I love this so much for you! It’s tough getting rid of things but it can make you feel so much LIGHTER I hope you feel refreshed after all that! You deserve it!
INSPIRING VIDEO!!!!!! I feel you 100%. It's so tough. Congratulations. You deserve everything WONDERFUL. May I suggest a space bag for those sherpa-lined sweatpants and your "sheep look" for when it's summer? Truly a space saver! I store my fleece and sherpa-lined pants that way and only bring them out in the winter (you could add your Hello, Kitty onesie in there too). I'm about to tackle the costume jewelry situation. And I am FLOORED that you said you're 47!!!!! WEEEEEERRRRRKKKK!!!! 🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽 Was there a specific place where you donated your items? I am always searching for suggestions for recycling and donation ideas (I don't live in the Boston area, though).
I recently decluttered during this past holidays . Amazing how so much stuff I accumulated in such a small space. ❤ hello kitty pants in the bottom drawer.
Watched it three times through so I could declutter WITH you. This is so great when I can't get together with a girlfriend to do this. You're my UA-cam person.
Yes! I like clothes and sometimes I really do need new clothes (I also really enjoy home decor stuff) but I'm so good at beating myself up for spending money on those...😅
Hi Kay, I felt your pain. I know how it feels to get rid of stuff you like, love and enjoy. Unfortunately, if we don't use it as often as we did and if it is in good shape, why not give it to someone who has nothing, can't afford nice things? That is the way I look at it and makes it more bearable. Look at it this way, it's like eating sour dough bread. It's hard right? With some butter or olive oil, it will help it swallow and not scratch your esophagus. Lol funny but true. Lol. Th as t is the way we should look at things we love and have to go. I will use this analogy next time I go deccluttering. Lol
I would really like to love my clothes, but unfortunately I have to keep things because they fit. Finding clothing is a challenging process that I avoid, and often have to compromise by wearing things I hate. I could get rid of 90% of my clothes today easily, but then I'd have nothing to wear and the likelihood of finding things I like that fit are extremely slim. It was great seeing you talk through this mental and emotional process though.
Well done Kay! I did a similar clear out of all my clothes and left me feeling so much lighter. If it didn't fit my current shape and attitude I let it go. What was kept and in season is being worn to be sure it should stay. Shopping is different now as I scrutinize the fabric, shape, color and fit. Thanks for sharing these real life challenges with us and have fun shopping for some 2024 Kay treasures!!!
'I feel like I don't deserve nice things' - oh sweets, I absolutely feel you there. But you DO deserve nice/new things. If you aren't feeling comfortable in the things you do have, donate/rid yourself of things that don't act as an expressive extension of your beautiful self
Good for you! You should go shopping and love all your clothes. I know it’s hard to find pants that fit good because you’re petite. I have the same problem because I’m so tall. I also don’t have many stores near me that carry nice clothes either. I’m glad I finally let go of a whole bunch of clothes that haven’t fit me for 5 years. It was hard, but I needed to do it.
Hey I'm about the same age you are! For me early 30s decluttering is extra hard because my kid was a baby then, and I realized years ago that it wasn't the things that I was sad about, it was the idea that I was giving up my kid's childhood/babyhood. The dumb stuff I got in my 20s is way easier to part with.
At some point later this year I will need to do the same with all my clothes, and this video is going to keep me company. Thank you, and you did a good job.
Your so beautiful and you don't look like your 47. Im so sorry for your loss of your dad my grandpa passed about a month ago and my life has been rocky physically and mentally but you reminded me my grandpa would always joke about my ripped jeans and I'm so glad I have those memories. ❤️ Anyways your video is motivating me to want to get rid of clothes I feel overwhelmed with mine. 😩
That was one of the toughest decisions of my life. To choose between clothes I'd like to look and own and clothes that I can really wear. It's so sad, but it's life. Clothes exist to be worn, not to be worshipped.
This has inspired me because I have so many things I need to get rid of. I'm generally unsentimental with clothing, but I have so much I don't wear and don't like anymore. I think it's an out of sight, out of mind thing. I don't leave my house a lot. I have decided to try and make my own clothing because I just hate clothes shopping, and I hate the styles and prints most of the time. Also, finding well fitting clothing is so hard.
Same, I can’t gain weight so even some middle school clothes fit. I’m not a fashion girly and am always cold so my style is more about comfort
Me too. That is going to help me with my decluttering I hope. My spare bedroom is ridiculous with stuff from me trying to declutter. I need to do it badly so I will keep that in mind and ask myself if I would really wear or use items now being who I am now.
I'm sorry, did you say 47?! You look amazing!
Girl you need to drop your skincare routine 😮
I totally understand about getting rid of items associated with someone we've lost. They don't bring the person back but they do bring back "something" -- a memory, a feeling, a scent. Tough choice.
you may have a brand new black cardigan, we will allow it - Society of Adult Women
THANK YOU 😂
Hahahaha. I see what you did there! Nice one!

I am inspired. I too want everything in my closet to be my favorite.

Why are we like this? 😂
I have a thrifted water bottle that has so many dents and the paint is coming off. It’s probably not great to ingest 😅

Loved when you said "dammit" when you got rid of a pair pants. Every decluttering has a "dammit" moment.
Dang it, Kay. I need to go through my clothes. I know I do. But the thought is so daunting.

Love this. I need to serve my 50-yr old self better too. I still have my corporate wear, unflattering clothes and hard clothes and you’ve reassured me it will be hard but feel good.
I think that basic pieces are only worth it if you wear them. Don't feel pressure to conform, you do you :3
So true. People say everyone needs basic tees in their wardrobe. I hate T-shirt’s and therefore don’t own any🤷♀️
I just have ones that I exercise in.
@@katsspace4688 I love your icon/profile pic by the way :3
@lisah5836 Thank you ❤️
Coffee and Autumn are my favourite things
Dressing for the girl/woman you are today. Yes to this! Congrats on your decluttering journey. Tfs
Changing your style as you get older is a sign of maturity..
My closet is full of clothes I don’t wear and hard for me to let go 😢
Your video has inspired me I will go in there and get rid of things 😢😢
You did such a good job. I also struggle to let go of past clothing choices. We are the same age, and my style is evolving. I have too much lounge wear that I do not want to wear out of the house, as well as a work wardrobe. At least 80% of my clothing is unworn, due to never going anywhwete. Plus I have items of 3 different sizes. Time for me to figure out my crap, and lose the weight or lose the too small clothes.
You DO deserve new things!!
@Princess_of_Pineapples I hear ya', solidarity from another size 11-the struggle is real !
YUP, size 11 here too! Such a pain! But my mum is a size 12 so I won there LOL
Going shopping for the new you is OK.
TJ Maxx has fun things. I work there, and they have new stuff coming in all the time. ❤❤❤❤
Darn Tough socks have a lifetime warranty!!
I felt that "damnit!" I bought new jeans and I always wash them before wearing them. Well, the downside is that after wearing a full day, I realize they're too big! 🙃 They stretch throughout the day and aren't as snug as the beginning of the day.
Thank you for this video. Very encouraging for me as I had to throw out a lot of clothes recently due to my changing body.
So glad to see you again! I’m needing the motivation to get things GONE! Way to go 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Thank you for this, and sharing your process :)
I recently let go of a pair of shorts that were 30+ years old (not a typo)...LL Bean jeans that I cut off into shorts back when I was in college (and I'm 51 now).
Kay, thank you for mentioning Future. I've been researching fitness apps. I trust your recommendations 100 percent. You look great, BTW.
You are so welcome! I've really enjoyed having an accountability buddy!
Lol so funny you’re struggling with decluttering even though you’re a professional organizer! You did great!! It looks like you take good care of your things. There was a period of time where I didn’t buy things because I already had clothes, I think I’m back there again lol. I need to declutter too!
I am 47 you definitely look great. I love your videos. I just got desk bins and declutter today. You are an inspiration.
The easiest way to thread a string or elastic through something is to use a safety pin.
I love your videos ❤
ore
I love closet cleanouts! Very therapeutic ❤
Ooo, love the wallpaper in your closet!
That’s amazing 😆
My closet is my favorite thing to declutter because it means I can do some shopping :)
I did a huge clean out closet and t shirts before summer started it was like three bags full of clothes that I donated and coats 😊
Omg- I laughed at the bra. I JUST did the same thing recently and got rid of lots of disfigured undergarments 😂
The eternal puzzle is why we put things that are ripped or broken back in the drawer instead of getting rid of them right away. Like they’re going to magically self-repair!
Same here, I just replaced nearly all, and I really had to convince myself "you deserve to look nice all the time."
I was literally finally going through my closet today, for the first time in years 😂
I LOVE shopping for workout clothes!
Yay! I love this so much for you!
It’s tough getting rid of things but it can make you feel so much LIGHTER
I hope you feel refreshed after all that! You deserve it!
Claims to have no emotional attachment to socks.
Proceeds to go thru declutter process illustrating emotional attachment to socks. 😝😆😂😍

Missing your videos
So happy you posted
Much needed as I lost alot of weight and need to declutter
You are a joy to listen to! So glad I found you!
That white ruffle top with polka dots and black belt at the waist is soooo PRETTY! I wish I could've taken it off your hands!
Hello Kay👋🏾👋🏾 Hugs to Clover😊
This will help me make our hurricane season bug out bags in case we have to evacuate this year. TFS
I recently decluttered during this past holidays . Amazing how so much stuff I accumulated in such a small space. ❤ hello kitty pants in the bottom drawer.
Wow, Got some tips to do the same, but life goes on. Thank you
You have inspired me to clean out my closet, so that will be happening today. Thanks. Kay!!
I just found your account and i am so happy about it!! You seem so authentic and considerate! Thank you for taking us along!
Watched it three times through so I could declutter WITH you. This is so great when I can't get together with a girlfriend to do this. You're my UA-cam person.
I needed this! Thank you so much! I always struggle with being sentimental and keeping gifts I never wear. And you look. Amazing!!
Heartbreaking yes. But you’ve inspired me Kay. Thank you ❤❤❤
Hey I'm about the same age you are! For me early 30s decluttering is extra hard because my kid was a baby then, and I realized years ago that it wasn't the things that I was sad about, it was the idea that I was giving up my kid's childhood/babyhood.
The dumb stuff I got in my 20s is way easier to part with.
Inspired me to donate clothes that I don’t wear. Thank you.
I'm fully doing this this weekend and will probably need to rewatch this at least 4 times! ❤
I still like my old clothes but since having a kid none of fit me well anymore, so I let them go.
I was literally wondering where you have been yesterday and here you are! Poof!
Me too!
Signed, the other Jennifer. 😊

You Deserve NEW THINGS
At some point later this year I will need to do the same with all my clothes, and this video is going to keep me company. Thank you, and you did a good job.
I feel your pain...the struggle is real.😢
Your so beautiful and you don't look like your 47. Im so sorry for your loss of your dad my grandpa passed about a month ago and my life has been rocky physically and mentally but you reminded me my grandpa would always joke about my ripped jeans and I'm so glad I have those memories. ❤️ Anyways your video is motivating me to want to get rid of clothes I feel overwhelmed with mine. 😩
The last time I watched your closet declutter I wanted all of your cast offs. I’m sure I will again.
I feel like we need to be friends! Thank you for the inspiration
The struggle is real when decluttering clothes & just in case items 😂.
