  • On Monday December 26th 1994, Air France Flight 8969, en route from Algiers to Paris, was over taken by a group of four men disguised as police officers. The men were well armed and took the 232 passengers and crew hostage-- leading to a hellish 54 hour siege. Prime Minister Édouard Balladur was called back to the Elysee Palace and briefed on the situation. Where he made the call for a response from an elite counterterrorism unit. The GIGN.
The National Gendarmerie Intervention Group, commonly known as GIGN, is a highly specialized police tactical unit operating under the National Gendarmerie of France. Its diverse range of missions include countering terrorism, hostage rescue, counter-intelligence, safeguarding government officials, critical sites (such as French embassies in conflict zones), and combating organized crime.
The National Gendarmerie Intervention Group (GIGN) operates under the direct authority of the Director General of the Gendarmerie Nationale (DGGN), who serves as the chief of staff of the Gendarmerie and reports directly to the Ministry of the Interior. In case of a major crisis, the DGGN or his Deputy for Operations may assume command; however, GIGN mostly supports the day-to-day operations of local units of the Departmental Gendarmerie. Additionally, GIGN is part of the European ATLAS Network, which is an informal association comprising the specialized police units of the 27 member states of the European Union.

You know what’s crazy? In 50 years the GIGN have only had 9 casualties. 2 during operations and 7 during training incidents. In the 50 years since formation, having taken part in over 1,800 missions they have only lost 2 operators. These guys are the best of the best, mad respect
Edit since everyone keeps bringing up Delta, SAS, SBS, etc… I AM TALKING ABOUT CTF AND NATIONAL POLICE FORCES. Think ones like the GSG9 or FBI HRT. Yes these guys can absolutely give Delta and SAS a run for their money but those are military forces, the GIGN is not.

Luckily the plane stayed in Marignanne, had it taken off, it would have been shot down over the forest.

Hi Popo Medic, I am glad that you covered this one masterpiece of an intervention. I remember seeing this live on TV, I was 14 Yo at that time. Some commentators about this case later said that this case had an impact on the 9/11 attacks. The Air France crew was clearly playing against the terrorist, but there was nothing the terrorists could do in return because they could not fly the plane. Therefore, Al Qaeda decided to use trained pilots instead, hence eliminating the crew from the start. Knowing how close were GIA and Al Qaeda ideologically, this seems possible.

Seriously injured by 7 Kalashnikov bullets (2 of which lodged in his bulletproof vest) and by the explosion of a grenade, he nevertheless neutralized 3 of the 4 members of the Armed Islamic Group. He will survive his injuries despite the after-effects.

His visor exploded due to an uzi round, he was shot multiple times by the same uzi in the chest (kevlar stopped it), took 7 shots of AK47 (only 2 were stopped by his vest) and while he was laying on the ground a grenade was thrown next to him and he survived because he turned around to turn his back to the grenade. Hey Popo Medic, Great video. Just one thing I noticed, why was the schematic displayed the Antonov an225 Mriya instead the Airbus A300? It looked kind of weird tbh. Nothing big overall, just wondering if this was an error or you weren't able to attain the top -down schematics of the A300.

Pretty amazing how in even the absolute best raids by the best teams, they still. have mistakes in planning or execution -- in this one, the airstair height (I guess they didn't have time to practice with the specific stairs on that model of aircraft elsewhere at the airport?), at Iranian Embassy SAS had the rappelling failure which set things off early, etc. Rapidly overcame it, which is why they were successful.

There's an episode of I Survived which features one of the hostages, a woman, who was shot and thrown out the door of the plane but survived. Her account is absolutely horrifying. She sat there in line, so to speak, just waiting to be executed, watching those in front of her being murdered and her believing she would be killed any second. I honestly struggle to think of something more terrifying, more stressful, than that.
