Thank you so much for your reply. I found cumin seeds at my local Mexican store. I found the some of the other ingredients at my local Somali market. I did not have a spice grinder so I used a small mallet and it took me about 1 hour to crush and pound all the spices!! I made your sambuss grpund beef filling recipe, everyone loved it!!! thanks again, stay blessed.
Allahuakbar. .. when I made it ...even with powdered spices and mixed with the correct ratio as per this video ...I got it right... tried it with the whole oven grill chicken ...beautiful. ...keep the good work
I'm so happy I found your video, I love Somali cooking but I find it hard to recreate at home but your video make it very simple! I will try some of your dish's today for Ramadan. May Allah reward you!
Geedo is used for making 'duqus,' which is the spice mix you are talking about. Some people call the spice mix itself 'geedo', which means plants (aromatic ones). Sayyid Maxamed Abdille Xasan said: Haddii doobka caano ah iyo karuur, dacalka lay saaro Haddii darib la ii soo dhigiyo, duqus la geedeeyey In the above poem, duqus refers to finely chopped meat that was flavoured with spices. God willing, we will post the recipe for it. Thank you for the question.
As Noway Whatokay said it is similar to Indian spices. This spicemix is a called as garam masala we add some little more ingredients with this. Xalwa is called as Halwa in India.I have heard that before many century Africa and India were same continent. This might have been true and you both look like Indians :) .Anyway thanx for sharing.Do continue your greatjob
For those of us that are hopeless in the Kitchen in particular cooking Somali food, you have become a saviour. My husband cooks for us and he is an amazing at it bt really will love to woow him with my cooking so will try your recipe thanks for posting the video
Indeed the similarities are many. We thank you very much for stoping by our channel and for taking the time to comment, and thank you for encouraging us.
You can use cumin powder. However, when you grind whole spices the flavour is much better. The powder loses it's flavour the longer you store it. You can find cumin seeds at ethnic stores especially Indian. Thank you.
Salaam, These recipes are great. They are often very similar to Yemeni food that I was originally looking for. Plus, I have found new ones! Thanks so much!
Thank you very much for your comment. You can use 2 tsp ground cinnamon and 1/2 cup ground coriander, but we strongly recommend you use the seeds. You can find coriander seeds in most Indian stores.
There is a particular spice mix used in Northern Somalia called 'Geedo' that was added to meat that gave a wonderful appetizing smell and taste. It isn't added while cooking but put on the table for people to add while serving. It is a dark ground mixture, like ground coffee, Do you know what it is made of?
I asked for the recipe earlier without realizing you already had a video available. Thank you. I love ethnic food so much that I already have all on the spices on hand along with the appropriate equipment, so now all I need to do is just make some for myself...oh, and I also need to get the wonderful music that you play on your videos!!! I am a fan of both the food and the music!! :) Take care!
@@carolynlane3439True. :) I miss this channel so very much! It's been a while since I re-watched all of their videos. I think it is time for me to watch them again. I hope their restaurant is still doing well. I am sure it is - their food looks so delicious! If I am ever in Canada, their restaurant will be first on my list of places to visit! :)
Hi there thanks for these awesome videos. I'm trying to make the xawaash but was unable to find cinnamon bark and coriander seeds and instead bought ground cinnamon and ground coriander. Do I use the same measurements if not what should I adjust each of them too. Thank you :)
Grinding by hand takes a lot of effort and time but it is doable. That was the traditional method (mortar and pestle). A blender will not give you good results. Use a coffee grinder instead. Thanks for the question.
Brother, can you please tell me the best way to make Kashomi (onion with carrots I guess) normally used to present on the top of rice? Also, can you please tell me the best way to make Hilib Ari? I eat at a Somali restaurant here, they present the meat and it is well cooked and tender, unlike the one I make at home! Do you use the same spice in the video above with all your meals (meat, kashomi, liver, egg with onion and tomato, etc)? Thank you
Hi brother.. I made this &I had to write what aroma did it have.Even though I had garam masala store bought but this had a special kind of exotic aroma..very different . really really nice . Let's see how the dishes turn out using this. .

Thank you very much for your comment. You can use 2 tsp ground cinnamon and 1/2 cup ground coriander, but we strongly recommend you use the seeds. You can find coriander seeds in most Indian stores.

The blender will not grind it. You need a spice grinder.

Yes, you can use it, but you will get more flavour from the spices that you roast and grind.

so basicly it is a kind of garam masala, differing only in not having tej patta (which has cinnamon sorta taste)
You can use cinnamon sticks instead.
