🤔 NEW HERE? 🤔
Hi! My name is Christopher Odd and I’ve been playing video games on the internet for a few years. I really enjoy a variety of games but generally lean towards games with a unique and engaging story (Bioshock, The Witcher, etc), strategy/roguelike games (XCOM 2 War of the Chosen, Darkest Dungeon, etc), and RPGs (Dark Souls, Dragon Age, etc). Of course, I am always looking for great indie games too!

"We are going to kill this unit.... WHAT WE DIDN'T?!?!"
That's X-co... Phoenix Point Baby!
It certainly doesn't have the same ring to it. 😏
@@JCTiggs1 "Did you go PP in your pants?"
I wish this system was in xcom, it prevents the whole "You don't hit cuz i say so" bs
If you miss is because you either didn't have a clear shot or because you aimed at something you where unlikely to hit instead of the old "the dice says fuck you"
NANCOK so basically it’s fallout VATS rules, when you shoot?
@@Blizzard0fOz93 Not really, in VATS you choose a body part and the player shoots in it's general direction, in this game you can choose an specific point and can even see where the shot may go, so you know how good of a shot you're taking and in XCOM, you just click shoot and throw the dice wich has very unsrealistic and arbitrary values, the game is made so you can always fail instead of giving you means to deal reliable damage

Edit: Over 150K views!!! Thanks, everyone, I hope you're enjoying!
Hey everybody! Welcome to a campaign for Phoenix Point! I hope you enjoy it! Mini review: There's a lot of new mechanics to learn both in tactical missions and the overarching geoscape exploration. The interactions between the factions provide an additional layer of complexity as it won't be easy to be friendly with all of them. The flexibility out on the battlefield is REALLY nice to have and it forces you to think differently. There are some things that could be further polished, cover takes a bit to get used to when manual aiming, but for the most part bugs haven't been very common in the time I've played. If you like games similar to XCOM, this is a no brainer in my opinion. If you're purchasing the game anyways, consider using my link/creator code: Christopherodd www.epicgames.com/store/en-US/product/phoenix-point/home?epic_affiliate=christopherodd&epic_gameId=iris

Extra Tip #1 You can also hold CTRL plus scroll wheel to adjust the width of the overwatch cone!
what is the game out allready wasn´t it supposed to launch December 3rd at 11 am Pacific Time (7 pm GMT 9pm for my time in finland lol) well thanks anyway for the new "xcom" playthrough lol have to see how it goes and whats changed from backers build 5
okay you got it early lol have fun backer build was fun also...
few tips i learned from backer build:
1: build banshee head and leg armour imeaditely for your heavy, that -34+ accuracy hurts him tons at start since even tile away you shoot whole house wall away instead darn pandoran lol ( your gonna thanks for me for this since i had 8 lvl 7 assaults with lvl 1 heavy trying to hit something in 50 encounter and never did hit lol even from tile away lol )
also i used heavies jumping 1st some good high location to see where enemies are since their short range they don´t shoot much lol
2: Jericho has most hard hitting sniper rifle at early stage so getting their tech is 1st priority i´d say and their armour piercing weapons later are good too
Spoiler alert:
3: for skills we did´t see much but for assaults movement and willpower are main stats and as skills if its still same dash on lvl2 is great skill to have since 2 will power for full dash (range depends on your movement) to right next to enemy is great to have
for snipers
lvl 2 quick aim is helpfull since it lowers action point usage by 1 and gives aim...
i used sniper assault dual class lot at start since dash to good shooting postion and quick aim for 2 sniper shots killed anything even armoured humans...
don´t want to spoil too much but there is few really good tips for start wich are good to know, bear in mind this was backer build and these can have been changed on launch build...
Just slightly bummed at the character creation. Other than that this game looks amazing.
33:17 well pincer was in circle, and it considered as weapon, so no damage to health of crabman, but your sniper still had 1 pistol shot, you forgot about it, when setting over-watch you can also choose how wide over-watch angle is.
sDdnDSiduAe4b - good point!

ChristopherOdd can you please come back to this for the dlc campaign’s that have been released
Pretty pumped for this play through. You're the best Phoenix Point and XCOM commander in the galaxy, thanks for all your hard work. Now get out there and don't die. Good luck.

That voice sounded like Vahlen at first. So that’s where she ended up.
While running away from a Viper King, she ended up tripping and falling through a conviently placed psionic gate and into the world of Phoenix Point.
I would love another play through of this with all the dlc
I played with no dlc to start with. Started an all dlc legend play through yesterday. It's brutal. That Behemoth is intimidating too, but at least I have a lot more toys to even the odds slightly.
It's funny to hear you say it's very different when compared to Xcom, when in reality it is very similar to the original Xcom and not the reboot
19:00 - Not sure if any dev is watching this pilot episode, but there's a typo in the tooltip. "...any other *bulltets* fired in a burst."
That's not a typo, its pronounced bull-tits
The one thing I noticed was the lack of capital letters...."andrew" instead of "Andrew" annoyed me =p

Hello Commander
Hello there
Thank you Commander for what looks to be another fine play through. Looks like I may need to do a little Christmas shopping for myself. If you need another idea for a character, I did this one for XCOM 2 but I'm sure he would join right in against the Pandoran threat. Keep up the great work sir!
Dave "Snake" Acker, former enforcer for an outlaw motorcycle club, old, gray, scarred, dangerous. As a young man, all he wanted to be was a Green Beret and he worked tirelessly to realize his dream. As Special Forces NCO, operating in Afghanistan and Iraq, Snake found himself chafing under the rules of engagement that too often seemed to let the enemy slip through the fingers of US forces. After 4 tours he was badly wounded and scarred. He got out but soon realized he still needed the brotherhood and adrenaline rush of combat. He saved the life of the Vice President of the Draugar motorcycle club one night in a bar fight and he knew he'd found a home. Moving quickly up the ranks of the club, he became chief enforcer due to both his training and his ruthless dedication to winning any battle. As the Pandora virus arose and the world descended into chaos, Snake decided his skills could be put to good use once again. He remembered hearing his father, during one of the few times he talked about his time in Vietnam, mentioning the Phoenix Program. The program was designed to identify and destroy the Viet Cong (VC) via infiltration, torture, capture, counter-terrorism, interrogation, and assassination. He wonders if this new Phoenix Project, that seems to have risen again in Earth's time of need, might use a ruthless soldier trained to kill in a myriad of ways.

I so wish this was not an Epic Store exclusive, as it looks really nice.
Might as well throw my hat in the ring: Oswald "Osmosis" Bridgewater
Brown hair and beard. Say sniper-ish type, if at all possible.
Me too on the ESE part... but hopefully we'll get it on other clients soon enough.
I believe the exclusivity deal was only for a year... and that being the case, the prices will have gone down, all the DLC should be released, and we can buy the whole package as a really nice deal on the Steam Christmas Sales ;-)
@Diego Marra Several reasons why people hate it and I can understand each point. Lets start with the most obvious: epic is a chinese company funded by the chinese govt, recieving money from them for recording any non-chineses gaming-habit. At the same time baning games critical towards the chinese govt and if possible even throwing those game devs in prison for some years (was a horror game that referred to their leader as winnie the poo).
As next point for hate we have the exclusive scene. You can look at xbox and ps and hate their habit of buying exclusive titles, but what epic does is a step above. At least microsoft fused xbox and pc gaming and sony releases every title within a year on all pc reseller. Epic on the other hand buys whole game studios, after the games are almost done, cancels their release and only releases them in the epic launcher with a possible release for psn, steam and microsoft, banning all reselling, so basically blocking thousands of local businesses and websites like gog. And finally devloper and indie fans are angry, because epic promissed to do a better job at QA and just charge a fraction of what steam charges indie devs per sale (which is around 40%). Now epic allows everyone to sell their "game", there is almost no quality checks and the biggest ruse was: you are charged almost nothing if you are a chinese indi dev, but if you are a non chinese releasing on epic, you have to pay more than steam per sale and also are by contract not allowed to release your game on any other medium for at least a year. So epic basically turned out as chinese government regulated company trying to fuck over indie devs, indie gamer, multi platform gamer and pc gamer, so of course people are pissed.
By the way, just forgot: epic requires you to respond to a chinese server with at least 15 Mbit or you get kicked from single player and online games, if repeating even get banned for a lifetime with that account. Have fun in rural areas or rtying to game in a city during the weekends.
The main reason to hate is having another game manager installer on my PC. I'm not interested in that. Plus what something like Epic killed or acquired Steam? What do you think will happen to your game library & the front-end? Something like Epic, throwing money at video game developers in order to force the PC community to buy their games, can hurt Steam. And it's underhanded. All Epic is doing is throwing their money away in order to undercut their competitor which is only Steam. As long as nobody bothers to buy games on their platform, it'll tank, plus the designers may get their profit but won't have many people playing the game...sort of unfortunate for them...Hey, but they got their money...sort of pointless to build a game the majority will not play.
This is probably the first time I leave a comment on your videos even though I'm a long time "watcher".
I absolutely love this game and I love the way you play and explain the intricate mechanics along the way.
Looking forward to more videos to watch!
Yessss. Can't wait for this.
I just finished my second XCom2 play-through last night (first with War of the Chosen). Got inspired to play again after watching your latest XCom series. I equally love playing, and watching these tactical turn-based types of games.

Pretty cool! It certainly seems more oldschool with all the extra management required, like ammo and properly consumable consumables
Mkay so at first I thought this was just another Xcom styled game but now.....
This is literally a tabletop skirmish war game and I’m all here for it lolol I always wondered what it would look like if a 40k styled game was turned into a video game and this is literally it
Hey everyone, us writers from the XCOM playthroughs are open to collect Phoenix Point logs as a separate compilation if anyone is interested!
Love the video so far. I'm really learning a lot.
At 45 minutes in the video when your soldier can't "step out" and shoot the alien that should be exposed it's because he's technically behind 1/2 cover so he crouching. They can only step the the side when they are behind full cover and therefore aren't crouching. Usually that's not a problem but the half cover you were behind had that weird full cover attached a block forward and it stopped your line of sight.
Can't wait to watch the rest of these.

Thanks for finally picking up this game! I remember when you mentioned it about a year ago, and now, we get to see you take down a whole new gaggle of aliens! Let's get it!
One of the absurdities is soldiers do not have accuracy as an attribute.
Accuracy is dependent on the weapon and their perception (I believe this is a stat or perhaps dependent on armor). There’s no accuracy because no matter what shots will be within the free-aim circle. If you shoot at a thing and the bullets hit it, it will get hit and take damage. It isn’t a percentage or a board game dice roll like in XCOM.
@@itsflyde If accuracy can be a property of the weapon it can be modified by the soldier as well. Accuracy is much more believable as a soldier perk than speed.
Still trying to catch up with the new season of XCOM but just wanted to drop a comment here that I'm super excited you're finally trying out this game and can't wait to see how your campaign goes. Happy gaming!

What the hell happened to Florida and part of Texas and Louisiana? Did these Necronomicrabs sink it?
This whole apocalypse started because global warming melted the polar ice caps, my dude, and those are some of the lowest-lying coastal areas in the US.
As someone who has been playing the backer builds of this I am pumped to see Commander Odd take this on. Please use me as cannon fodder in this campaign. Name Aaron, "Adragon" Thompson and any class you need to fill holes in your roster is good.
This game is so weird. At first, I thought shooting the head was going to be my strategy, but I was wrong.
AI gets unlimited ammo and unlimited return fire. No, no...Not that simple. This return fire is, if you attack any one of the crabs, all the crabs who have LOS on you and are in firing range will return fire at the attacker. Unfair right? I know, your guys get that ability too except you will almost always be outgunned by the crabs.
The strategy here is the game wants you to use the snipers and take out the body parts disabling the attacks. So if your sniper take out the crab's hand holding the machine gun, that crab is as good as dead. It will run around the map harmless...DUMB! Wait wait, I forgot...it can spit poison at you which you can also disable too...I know...Such a design flaw.
My opinion? I really don't like that system. It is NOT harder. It is just dumb....
The free-aim system is wonky at best and a gimmick in the rest imho. What I find extremely dumb is that the model's animations actually influence where you can shoot it, so you can get really good shots simply because the enemy moves in a way that exposes a weak spot for a couple of seconds. This kind of stuff is not tactical and doesn't enrich the gameplay, it just sounds cool and nothing beyond that.
Games like OG XCOM and Jagged Alliance did free-aim in a good way, it had tactical consequences and tradeoffs, and you also had the flexibility to aim towards the environment [walls, explosive stuff, etc] without turning this feature into a hassle that had variable outcomes due to animations of all things.
It’s not dumb design. Stop acting like a child.
Matthew Anthony You cannot compare an AAA game to an indie game. Those have dozens if not hundreds of people working on them and gigantic budgets to work with, while indie games don’t.
Matthew Anthony You cannot compare an AAA game to an indie game. Those have dozens if not hundreds of people working on them and gigantic budgets to work with, while indie games don’t.
Matthew Anthony Well, comparing Xcom to Phoenix Point was what I was referring to. But apparently you didn’t get that. Calling me inbred and a moron? Really mature.
I can see why you got an early copy of the game. Saw a few people play it at launch, and they had a miserable time since they tried to play it as if it was x-com2. As a result I felt really uncertain about getting the game. Watching this though, you definitely seem to have a better grasp of what you're doing and make the game look a lot more interesting. Going to have to watch a few more of your videos, but you've definitely taken someone on the fence about the game, and are slowly convincing me it's worth a purchase.
Wish I could get a physical copy. I refuse to install the Epic launcher.
Why ?

Yeah ! You mean releasing one of the best game engine on the market for free for any developer to use ?
Or maybe you are talking about the free game assets, code, graphics animations, sounds, pluggins, that they release for free every month for game developper to use ?
Or is it the 2 weekly free games on their store ?
No, no... I got it ! You are definitely talking about the fact that they only take 12% on game sales instead of 30% on steam.
To me the worst thing epic does is to garantee sales to indie devs even if they don't do it. I mean how dare they try to save indie companies instead of letting them die like any good greedy capitalist companie would ?

Male, scruffy salt n' pepper beard, blue eyes, brown hair, colors in yellow and brown. Armor and class: whatever you like. :)
This game is such a disappointment, especially the customization they so proudly advertised is laughable and the controls are clunky as hell, the micro management of items feels unintuitive as if it was just there to drag out the play time.
Which sucks because many ideas are good, but things like not being able to cancel shooting with right click and having to press ESCAPE every time makes it so uncomfortable to play I just went back to modded xcom 2
Totally agree! And after watching this it just made me want to play XCOM 2 again.
Agreed.
A sniper helmet to your heavy may help a lot.
Solomon Gunn reporting for duty.
_Edit:_ About the looks, you played Mass Effect, so I'll leave that to you ;)
Can you mix and match armour like that?
@@distinguishedallureproduct879 I did with the backer build 5, and it was really handy for the heavies, not sure if can be done in the final version tho, still worth a try, the improvement to accuracy is pretty nice.
Welcome to not XCOM. ;)
This is X-Com Remake as it was meant to be. Even thematically it borrows from both Enemy Unknown and Terror From the Deep.
I only know how to play xcom.
Charge the enemies, wasted turn overwatch is next turn close range.
I'm unutterably excited aboot this game! I can't wasit to see the epic highs and lows of your play through!
Cyivch 'cybo' Boten
Assault class
Short cropped blue hair,
Grey eyes,
Voice: 2
Armor: Grey, with blue highlights
Armor pattern: 5
Everything else randomized/up to you.
Looks really good. Unfortunately it is an Epic exclusive. I'm going to wait until it is not an exclusive. I wish you would take a stance against exclusives as well and not cover them. Exclusives are bad for us consumers and supporting Epic and developers that sell out is something we should not be doing.
It may feel bad for YOU, but it can be really great for the developers. They now have the funding they need to keep developing the game and paying their salaries for the foreseeable future, as opposed to “hopefully” reaching that goal via crowd funding and sales. Nobody likes to have their futures up in the air.
Wow, that was better than I thought. Looks very different than from original trailers in a good sense
Just one thing - the word is "magazine" - not "clip."
Nothing doesn't get past you doesn't it..
I'll continue to call them Clipazines, thank you.
A few observations coming into this game.
1. Assault troops seem like they're good for plugging the weaknesses of the other classes. They're fairly inaccurate, and lower raw power than the Heavy or Sniper, but they're much more versatile. Their weapons are lower cost to use, and they fire multiple times per shot. So you can use them effectively as scouts and spotters for your other characters, as well as use them to clean up what other characters couldn't kill. Other classes have more benefits to using, but these guys seem like they're really made to be your jack of all trades.
2. Center of Mass. When you first see the shooting system you may be fooled into thinking it works like VATS in the later Fallout games, because it looks fairly similar with the individualized targeting, but that's misleading. In Fallout, you're almost always better off aiming for the head just to get raw damage, but that's not the actual goal in this game. Every shot is still going for the target creature, and while you could still be aiming for the head, it seems like a better idea to ensure every bullet hits, rather than prioritize head shots entirely.
This is entertaining because this actually encourages firearm doctrine in real life. Nobody aims for the head unless they are absolutely at point-blank range. Instead, you aim for center of mass because while you may not instantly kill your target, you're putting rounds into them either way. If they're hit, they're likely dead either way. Since every bullet is actively being carried by your troops, it's a good idea to make safe shots that are easier to hit, than always going for high-risk, high reward shots. Also makes the game feel a bit more action-oriented. YOU are making the shots almost like an FPS, not just telling your soldier who to aim at and then laughing when they miss a 99% shot at point blank range.
3. Armored Warfare. The ability to bring vehicles is a huge plus. It presents unique problems, but equally it provides exceptional benefits. I dig that they kept track of that, because it always confused me why in XCOM we're using infantry to take on Mutons, Berserkers, or Sectopods. War's not just about the boots on the ground, it's also about the air support and armor you can use. Sorta like rock, paper, scissors.
4. Factions. I love this, we're no longer the only people actually working in the world, and they all have their own interests and objectives that they're working towards. War of the Chosen leant towards this with the hero units, but ultimately this is a more fleshed out idea. They're essentially working in the exact same way that we are. They're doing tech, they're defending territories, it's a cool idea. Makes the game feel more like a 4x than just a tactical action game like XCOM.
5. RESOURCES. Another interesting concept is that we're seeing everything has a cost. If you use a grenade, it's gone. Spend a magazine of bullets? It's gone. Soldier died in their armor? It's gone. The fact all our resources have to be managed at the same time really makes this game feel more immersive and intense. This factor alone makes me think Berserkers are actually fantastic units if you can get them equipped, because Melee weapons don't run out of bullets. They've obvious disadvantages, but I feel like this could really help when supported by Snipers or other units with exceptional range to help you avoid wasting too much ammunition and materials.

Enjoyed the video and thanks to your commentary I feel I will be up to speed a lot quicker when I get hold of the game.
I refuse to buy this game till it's on GOG or Steam. I don't support EPIC exclusives.
Totally understandable. You also benefit from a bunch of bug fixes/improvements.
@@ChristopherOdd I always try to think of it as the EPIC users beta testing the game for us non EPIC users, to deal with the frustration every time a game I was looking forward to is taken hostage by them. It helps a bit.
Fan-bloody-tastic!!
So glad I can buy it 'through' you. It's only fitting, I've been waiting for your reaction before I commit to the purchase.
Happy hunting!
