Yeah, the people who love Xcom really stick by it. Also, mods make them especially Xcom 2 FAR more replayable. Such a good franchise, I can't wait for Xcom 3!
For real, I only ever played xcom 2 on my ps4, but I just picked up the XCOM bundle on steam and I'm playing through Enemy Within now. It looks almost as good as XCOM 2 and doesn't feel outdated at all.
seriously, so many people hate this game because they're afraid of losing. knowing what you said here changed the whole game for me in a major way. It still kicks my ass, but I enjoy it more.
It really is a never ending journey to improve. This game and its sequel are the most rewarding and addictive strategy games I've ever played. You're never so good you can't get a little better.

I literally just got into Xcom enemy within this weekend. I picked it up on a steam deal for £5 after stupidly(with hindsight) not trying this game out years ago. I'm really enjoying it and already looking forward to Xcom 2 in a few days time. I best get playing. Thanks for the tips!
I agree the first month, maybe the second, will make or break you in this game. and the funny thing is as an inexperienced player you'll realize you're doomed way too late, and u'll be asking 'why can't I complete this mission no matter what strategy I use'.
After a complete playthrough, you would rely Gray market heavily for credits as you knew which corpses and the amount you need to do things with, when you really need them and the availability in periods of game. Credit in early game is way more important than anything as you have so much to build/make. For example, sectoid are plentiful early but getting rarer in mid then even rarer in late game. Their main use is for Fighter boost but if you regularly upgrade weapon for your fighter( thank to money from GM), it wouldn't be necessary until mid-late game so you can sell sectoid corpses after autopsy and make 2-3 boosts from them. Sure, money from Council is nice but they are situational while Gray market is way more reliable. While variety sounds great, each class has a single build way better than anything else( except with snipers). You need need to vary one abilities for specific needs like CCS for Assault who you would send into Terror mission as they are Chryssalid's bane.

My first squad I sent out looked like the crew from that show reno 911. Just fumbling about getting shot at and slipping over banana peels n shit. It's crazy though how fast you start to learn how to play this game through mistakes and just trying new shit out, I am addicted to it. It's like I'm playing a huge digital board game.

If you enjoy Enemy Unknown let me strongly recommend the more well honed and recently released XCOM: Chimera Squad. Cuts out a lot of the base management stuff and lets you really enjoy the turn based combat and character growth/RPG systems. Good luck team leader!

Tony Mo I will admit though, There's always one of those THAT moments. For instance, I saw a couple of Mutors, there's only enough cover in one place for all your people, nothing else there. So it's either die by plasma or plasma grenade. Not a lot of options is there. :-/ one thing at a time. Could be 50-75 before I survive the first play through.

Never played these games before, got them all on sale. Played Unknown for a few days, was going super good, very fun. Then I heard Within was the same game, with more. So I started over in Within. Two days later I want to cry in frustration. I am returning to my saved game in Unknown. Same settings, so I'm not sure why the major difference. But one is challenging and the other is ass kicking and not in a good fun way!
Played this when I was in high school and loved the game. Just got it on steam and I must say I do like this one more then the second one. The art style and gameplay feel allot more pressing then the second games "avatar project"

I've seen people saying that satalite nexuses are key. i was writing a comment while he was talking, then replying to a reply on one of my comments on a different video so i dont know if he said this. i never really had building a satalite nexus work out for me. they were so expensive that if i were to save up for one instead of just spamming uplinks i would lose 1 or 2 countrys to the council and if i just payed no attention to them until i acually had enough stuff to acually build it i already had satalite coverage to every country that hadn't already withdrawn. keep in mind i literally checked after every single mission to see if i was able to build it.
Dude, this game is a recent favorite, free on Xbox weeks ago, still playing it. Mind if I chat you up Tony Mo? Right now I'm shortly after my first ethereal mission, working toward finishing ethereal facility. Okay- missions between the build time: defeated a downed ufo with 12 units, sectopod, drone, mutton elite, etc..... Murdered them all........ Next mission: my current mission....... I SANK THEIR BATTLESHIP (lol jk it is a battleship though, sent a demon with an emp cannon at them... Anywho, 26 crew survived,,.... I'm on normal mode and it's called operation twisted mother..... It is one twisted mother. 26 crew: 2 sectopods, (I can't get past the first one) and he has tons of buddies, after he takes out our cover. After him hyper wave says there's an ethereal, and lots of other stuff. I'm on freaking normal mode. What the hell am I gonna do

I don't know why but I'm on my 1st playthrough ever and I've got Psionic soldiers ( done 1 mission with that guy so far) and I've only lost 3 soldiers (Cpl, Capt., Col) and 2 countries are on 3 bars panic and the rest are on 1 with all countries still in the council. Normal with no extra second wave or anything. Is this good for a 1st attempt?

my struggle with the game is when u once fail its hard to get back CUz missions usually get Harder everytime and when once ur good players die ur doomed
I like how 2 missions in a row my squad got wiped out and I lost Mexico this is later In the game and when the council report came in they gave me an A grade lol
First game ever that I've had to restart 3 times and still haven't had more than 3 satellites up... There's so much to this game, thanks for the small guide. Damn Central kills 3 of my squad members, assures me that he's got all the little stuff and I can just go ahead and have fun, next thing you know China and the US wants nothing with me .-.
just started and hes talking about the research. my tips for research is to go for engineers instead of scientists then buld some laboratorys. but before your able to do that you will have 3 options. xeno-biology, alien materials, and weapon fragments. you should go with alien materials first, then weapons, then xeno-biology because if you get carapace armor early on you will most likely not lose any soldiers unless you are really, really bad at the game. then go with weapon fragments, so you can do more damage. there were so many times when my assault rifle only did 2 damage to a sectoid and he shot one of my soldiers and they were put in the infirmary for a long time. if you can do more damage then that simply wont happen in the early game, allowing your soldiers to get promoted faster. in the late game that will start to happen some more so titan armor and plasma weapons will be a priority (for me atleast. most of my strats work for me but others say that they suck so idk if this is one of those.) lastly, xeno-biology. this just allows you to autopsy aliens which allow you to know what abilitys they have, get acces to more upgrades in the foundry, and you can also interrogate aliens. i do these last because you can figure out their abilitys on your own, the only exception i know of is with mind meld. all you can tell is that it gives them one more health. i couldn't figure out if it also increased the aim, or critical chance, or what until the autopsy, but that wasn't very important as it didn't acually increase aim, just critical chance by 25% so unless they had a very easy shot there wasn't much to worry about. and if unless you are very, very, VERY unlucky while following this you will be garunteed to have xenobiology by the time you even unlock the foundry, let alone get it built. i prioritize armor and weapons over this because i care about my soldiers, usually. of course i don't care about rookies very much. if a rookie dies i will be angry because i lost either 1/4, 1/5, or 1/6 of my squad depending on how far you are in the game, while if i lost colonel gordon "mad man" freeman, i will be heartbroken because he has been with me from the start and is the main character of one of my top 10 favorite video games ever. for me there is usually no such thing as too much detail but i just went into way too much detail there.
I've been sitting on Enemy Within for years and finally wanted to get back into it. The money/time management is really intimidating considering your playthrough might go down the drain due to poor decisions.

So after 8 years or so, I'm gonna actually complete this game. Then I'm gonna try and finally complete XCOM 2, i tend to rage quit and not play again for months on end. But I've got the XCOM bug again, so I'm gonna go for it. Wish me luck fellow XCOM squaddies.
First time ever playing this game I decided to do Iron man mode and only lasted 9 hours before I completely lost. Now I'm starting a run where I'm actually trying to win and reloading
i knew most part of all of that the thing i have the most trouble is keeping funds around. im ALWAYS hurting for funds also same gose for weapons and keeping my hi lvl peeps in game so they lvl fast.. also how do i build my base in the best passable way/ speed?
Three tips from my three playthroughs: • Expand the squad size early on. It gives you more options, and makes deaths less painful. • The stun gun (arc thrower) gives you the weapon the alien had. You still have to research it to use it, but it is still very handy. • Try out the SHIVs. They bring big guns and allow for some aggressive outflanking. Also, quite cute.
I have to say that I am very impress with this video. I have played the first original XCOM. Do you remember the XCOM UFO defense? That was my game back in the day. Now I like this new Enemy Unknown. I also like what you said on the timeline 12:52. Since I have gotten back into this game about two months ago. I have started my game play 6 times. Of course, I save much. There are certain troops that I can't lose. When it becomes in possible to save them, then I start over. But I like this game that much. Thank you for this video.
For the most part you can use these tips when playing Enemy Within, however there is one key change in tactics when playing Enemy Within, The setup of the expansion requires players to be much more aggressive in their play style to ensure success and gain as much meld as possible.
I just started playing this game (Enemy Unknown) and didn't realize the importance of satellites, lost 3 countries and now there is no way to get those countries back. I searched online and they confirmed that's the way the game is which I think royally sucks. There should have been a way to fight those aliens to regain control of those countries. Also, the missions are so vague in the game, at one point after having spent almost 30 hours I wasn't getting any clue why my game wasn't progressing, I totally forgot to capture the live alien and the game didn't warn me about what I was missing to do which again sucks royally. I had to play the same map and this time when I captured the alien alive by accident (was testing stun gun gear on one of the characters), new research missions showed up. I want to continue other games in the series but if it's the same way, I am not so willing to play it. Can anyone confirm how are missions constructed in other games in the series like in Xcom 2, etc.?
Just started playing after that massive steam sale where basically everything xcom was just 20 bucks. I’ve been getting fucked by these aliens. I’m playing on normal because I’ve never played these games and I had to double check the difficulty because of how much bullshit I was dealing with and how many of my guys were dying, I don’t mean I got outflanked and killed I mean a damn sectoid from 20 tiles away crits my guy who is in full cover after dodging 2 overwatches.

Great commentary, question though, I'm like 4+ hours in the game and kinda screwed up the engineer count, lost 1 or 2 countries, and have built my base quite messy. Do you think I should restart or just go ahead and play through?
You could always push forward until you fail or just restart now. You can learn a lot from playing the game in the situation you have found yourself in, would help you gain some knowledge for your second playthrough.I would stick it out and see what happens.
Im used to non-base building Warhammer DOW II world, but I love turn based games. Is XCOM base management gonna to be too deep for my casual 1-3 hours a day gaming?

I recently had to restart my first game of XCOM because I wasn't managing my countries very well, and like 5 of them were on the brink of leaving the XCOM project.
How many times did you guys restart until you were able to finish the game?? Just played like 25 hours and the Aliens are too tough and I only got one light plasma rifle, out of funds, and not enough Fighters to defend the planet :-/

What difficulty are you on? You have to specify, tactics change heavily based pn your set difficulty

It says over one of my wounded in the mission "can be stabilized". I've got a team member with a med kit and I'm not able to do anything.

I haven’t tested but if you heal someone injured to full health before mission is over . Are they wounded still ?
I still don't know how to use smoke effectively. It makes the defenses of both enemies and you higher, but how do I use this feature, or when?
you want to use it on your troop(s) when you think you will be firing at enemies and dont want/can't get them out of line of sight

my struggle with the game is when u once fail its hard to get back CUz missions usually get Harder everytime and when once ur good players die ur doomed

In XCom, Vanilla especially, you don't really want to fail. Long War is generally harder and, of course, longer but more forgiving of failure.
I'm 24 hours into the game and I already lost 5 countries. Hahahaha.

just started and hes talking about the research. my tips for research is to go for engineers instead of scientists then buld some laboratorys. but before your able to do that you will have 3 options. xeno-biology, alien materials, and weapon fragments. you should go with alien materials first, then weapons, then xeno-biology because if you get carapace armor early on you will most likely not lose any soldiers unless you are really, really bad at the game. then go with weapon fragments, so you can do more damage. there were so many times when my assault rifle only did 2 damage to a sectoid and he shot one of my soldiers and they were put in the infirmary for a long time. if you can do more damage then that simply wont happen in the early game, allowing your soldiers to get promoted faster. in the late game that will start to happen some more so titan armor and plasma weapons will be a priority (for me atleast. most of my strats work for me but others say that they suck so idk if this is one of those.) lastly, xeno-biology. this just allows you to autopsy aliens which allow you to know what abilitys they have, get acces to more upgrades in the foundry, and you can also interrogate aliens. i do these last because you can figure out their abilitys on your own, the only exception i know of is with mind meld. all you can tell is that it gives them one more health. i couldn't figure out if it also increased the aim, or critical chance, or what until the autopsy, but that wasn't very important as it didn't acually increase aim, just critical chance by 25% so unless they had a very easy shot there wasn't much to worry about. and if unless you are very, very, VERY unlucky while following this you will be garunteed to have xenobiology by the time you even unlock the foundry, let alone get it built. i prioritize armor and weapons over this because i care about my soldiers, usually. of course i don't care about rookies very much. if a rookie dies i will be angry because i lost either 1/4, 1/5, or 1/6 of my squad depending on how far you are in the game, while if i lost colonel gordon "mad man" freeman, i will be heartbroken because he has been with me from the start and is the main character of one of my top 10 favorite video games ever.
for me there is usually no such thing as too much detail but i just went into way too much detail there.

I've been sitting on Enemy Within for years and finally wanted to get back into it. The money/time management is really intimidating considering your playthrough might go down the drain due to poor decisions.

So after 8 years or so, I'm gonna actually complete this game. Then I'm gonna try and finally complete XCOM 2, i tend to rage quit and not play again for months on end. But I've got the XCOM bug again, so I'm gonna go for it. Wish me luck fellow XCOM squaddies.
First time ever playing this game I decided to do Iron man mode and only lasted 9 hours before I completely lost. Now I'm starting a run where I'm actually trying to win and reloading
i knew most part of all of that the thing i have the most trouble is keeping funds around. im ALWAYS hurting for funds also same gose for weapons and keeping my hi lvl peeps in game so they lvl fast.. also how do i build my base in the best passable way/ speed?
The first thing I learnt was to not be ashamed of switching to easy. This game can be pretty hard for beginners of tactic games

Three tips from my three playthroughs:
• Expand the squad size early on. It gives you more options, and makes deaths less painful.
• The stun gun (arc thrower) gives you the weapon the alien had. You still have to research it to use it, but it is still very handy.
• Try out the SHIVs. They bring big guns and allow for some aggressive outflanking. Also, quite cute.

I have to say that I am very impress with this video. I have played the first original XCOM. Do you remember the XCOM UFO defense? That was my game back in the day. Now I like this new Enemy Unknown. I also like what you said on the timeline 12:52. Since I have gotten back into this game about two months ago. I have started my game play 6 times. Of course, I save much. There are certain troops that I can't lose. When it becomes in possible to save them, then I start over. But I like this game that much. Thank you for this video.

For the most part you can use these tips when playing Enemy Within, however there is one key change in tactics when playing Enemy Within, The setup of the expansion requires players to be much more aggressive in their play style to ensure success and gain as much meld as possible.
I just started playing this game (Enemy Unknown) and didn't realize the importance of satellites, lost 3 countries and now there is no way to get those countries back. I searched online and they confirmed that's the way the game is which I think royally sucks. There should have been a way to fight those aliens to regain control of those countries. Also, the missions are so vague in the game, at one point after having spent almost 30 hours I wasn't getting any clue why my game wasn't progressing, I totally forgot to capture the live alien and the game didn't warn me about what I was missing to do which again sucks royally. I had to play the same map and this time when I captured the alien alive by accident (was testing stun gun gear on one of the characters), new research missions showed up. I want to continue other games in the series but if it's the same way, I am not so willing to play it. Can anyone confirm how are missions constructed in other games in the series like in Xcom 2, etc.?
Just started playing after that massive steam sale where basically everything xcom was just 20 bucks. I’ve been getting fucked by these aliens. I’m playing on normal because I’ve never played these games and I had to double check the difficulty because of how much bullshit I was dealing with and how many of my guys were dying, I don’t mean I got outflanked and killed I mean a damn sectoid from 20 tiles away crits my guy who is in full cover after dodging 2 overwatches.

Great commentary, question though, I'm like 4+ hours in the game and kinda screwed up the engineer count, lost 1 or 2 countries, and have built my base quite messy. Do you think I should restart or just go ahead and play through?
You could always push forward until you fail or just restart now. You can learn a lot from playing the game in the situation you have found yourself in, would help you gain some knowledge for your second playthrough.I would stick it out and see what happens.

No, base building is not that complicated especially if you follow a specif order every time.
I choose an easy difficulty when I started this game why did I get a moderate and very difficult on the mission menu?

How many times did you guys restart until you were able to finish the game?? Just played like 25 hours and the Aliens are too tough and I only got one light plasma rifle, out of funds, and not enough Fighters to defend the planet :-/
After restarting this game thrice, this is basically my XCOM bible. Yes I'm late, idc, this game is incredible!
