- Jason is building a snow groomer for the woodlot trails out of an old metal staircase. This is part 2 of the build where he starts to piece the drag together with a flux core mig welder.

good job. I like the tip of the skis pointing up and inwards. Really looking forward to the final product and see how it performs. On first try in the trails, be careful if you have any small stumps in the trails or along the edges of the trail that could catch on the drag. They'll stop you in a hurry....don't ask how I know. Actually, if you are using your side by side, I would suggest you wear your shoulder harness at least for the first time. Once the trail has been dragged once and you are sure you have no obstacles, it goes much better. Since you asked, my two skis were made of angle iron in which I cut an angle in one of the side and then bent them upwards and rewelded.
Thanks for the feedback and the tips. Much appreciated! I was back at it this morning but fitting in my home made 45 degree angles is taking some time. Especially with my poor angle grinder cutting!
@@OakMountainAcotts I know the feeling too well. Angle grinding can be great but has its limitations...for me at least. I find it difficult to cut precisely. But then it gets me to practice filling in with welding...lol
Jason, it looks great! Sure is coming along. Cheers, Scott.
Thanks Scott… I gave it a good push today. I think I’ll be trialing it by next weekend!
@@OakMountainAcotts just in time for the cold weather to freeze in a nice trail!
Hi there and thanks for your video on the drag build, great job! I think your trail is set up now, but at the start of the season when enough snow allows, I pre-pack the trail with snowmobile and let set before I groom. It really saves the amount that builds up before the smoothing pan. Less work on machine as well! Great job and all the best in your endeavors!!
Hi John, that sounds like a good idea! Thanks for watching!
You're a better welder than we will ever be! Getting excited to see this bad boy in action! Best, David and Rachel
My brother is a journeyman welder so I'm getting coached virtually from the oil fields... we are getting close to completion so will be trialing in the next video I think!
Thats a great start Jason! 👌 you wouldn't believe the things I've welded with my little Lincoln Flux core MIG Pac 100. I find mine runs better on the generator than from a 15amp house circuit. I'm also supportive of you making those 45's no way I'd spend money on that.
Thanks Craig... I had 4 of them in the cart (hard to find online by the way!) and with shipping from the US and exchange the bill was going to be $176??? That was when I got the grinder back out!
Thank the guy in the funny hat for Canadian Tire's 75% off grinding wheel sales every few weeks!
I grabbed another pack this morning but the sale price was $16.99 not $9.99!
Hey Jason ! Your resourcefulness never disappoints ! I think your Dad taught you a thing or two growing up ! Nice job on your Forestry snow groomer ! It’s really groomey , out of sight, and just plain gear ! Catfish@ Good Samaritan Firewood Project
This gave me a chuckle. Great comment! We call Dad McGuiver… he can build anything with haywire, duct tape and a can of WD40! Take care, Jason.
Thanks Jason, don't worry about your welds, no one lays down dimes for awhile, just make sure your parts are clean and you have good penetration.
Agreed. My brother is a journeyman welder so I am getting tips behind the scenes from Alberta!
How's she goin'? The best projects are the ones we make using what we have and cobbling together bits and pieces!! This is going to be a nice groomer!! Take care!!
Thanks Mike… I have never really worked with metal much but I kind of like it!
Jason: For a snow drag- I would make due. It’s looking good.
Thanks Richard, taking a bit more weld but I'm still saving a lot of money on those fittings! Take care, Jason.
Good design of the skis. Pointing up and inward as Yves said. Before you even know it, the groomer will drag sideways, for no good reason, when you expect it least, to catch something in the ditch... you sure want this angle to work your way OUT of a tree. First snow of the season, I simply do not use the groomer, for the same reason Yves mention. Every summer, I run the excavator in the trails, early in the season, to catch rocks and stump I might get in my path. In that regard, it's also applicable for my offset flail mower. Have you planed anything to lift the front end of it? Because when you drag it in wet snow, it accumulates very quickly, to a point even a tractor can have hard time to pull it. You sure have tracks and will be able to pull, but it's pointless to drag a full igloo! Lol! On my screen, your welds looks fine! Thanks!
Thanks Joe... I didn't do any close ups of my welds on purpose! I am getting better and have the second spool of wire under my belt as of this morning. Off to town to restock. I don't have a plan to lift the drag yet... open to suggestions! Would some electro mechanical cylinders work or would they not be strong enough?
@@OakMountainAcotts I've used a manual winch on mine. So no need to connect anything and it can stay outside in the weather for decades! Only needs a bit of oil every other year... Lol!
Good idea, thanks!
Good job with the welding Jason, my moto is if it sticks good then that's good for me you can make it look pretty after. I have Mastercraft welder like yours I've done a few jobs with it. Good luck with the rest of your build.
Thanks Wayne. I’m trying to get good penetration on each piece and then weld my welds together. This rusty metal is hard to work with!
Good job I would have done same as you did
And +~- 1/4” no body will notice it in the bush lol
Dad always says “good enough for the girl I go with”!
Don’t worry about your welds, worry about your grinding! 😂
Ha ha, I’ll have a whole day of that before I ever paint it!
