Lost Norwich - Under the Flyover

- The Norwich Flyover, constructed in 1971/2, was and still is highly controversial. Part of the city's inner link road, it aimed to improve traffic flow around the city, but as this video shows, its construction swept away numerous buildings and former streets, and effectively split Magdalen Street in two.
Lovely film as ever, it almost unbearably sad again to see what has been lost and what has replaced it. Thank you for your efforts to keep Norwich history alive!
Thank you Andrew for your comment. The city certainly lost some character as a result, but it seems there was considerable congestion at the time and the road was done to relieve that. As you rightly say, I am trying to keep history alive!
Thank you .I remember when the fly over was built and was excited as a child to drive over it for the first time. Sad to see so many old building taken down though. My nan told me about what Barack street was like many years ago. No upstanding lady wood ever be seen on that street.
wow! That sheds a different light on it!
Heart warming video as always. Shame the flyover severed so much.
Thanks Keith
A lot to take in; I'll probably have to give it a second or third viewing. I have mixed feelings about the buildings demolished to make way for the flyover. Some of them probably had nothing wrong with them but the housing looked in need of improvement. Have you any plans to make a video about the courtyards and alleys in Norwich? The city seems to have a lot of them.
Thanks for your comment Geoff. To date courts and yards have been included in videos about specific locations, but I know that there are many more than those I've covered so far.
I loved seeing the old buildings and streets that were there before the flyover. I never really thought about that area too much before, so I learned a lot from this video. I applaud you for wanting to use the revenue from these videos to replace old plaques around the city, and to fund more. Come on City Council - make this happen!
Thank you, it may of course be nothing to do with the City Council, but you'd think they would know who to approach.
In the late 70's there used to be a delicious smelling shop selling ground coffee under the flyover on Magdalene street
Always great to get additional details - thanks w
Very interesting but ultimately very depressing what was lost in the name of "progress". Buildings that had stood for centuries replaced with boring Grey concrete and tarmac.
Thanks for your comment. I can only agree!
i live near here and its horrible...run down...and nasty they did nothing good in this area.
Thanks, that's sad to hear, as with so many old photos there has been a lot of attractiveness demolished.
It's a tragedy how so many older buildings have been lost. It reinforces the importance of the current laws protecting them, laws that needs to be reinforced rigidly.
I would absolutely agree, though to be fair some of these building would have been quite dilapidated.
I always loved the fact that the bridge was called the flyover 😂😂
That's true - I get that!
I know this area well having walked it often over 30 years ago, when the flyover was only 20! It is a tragic illustration of how we destroyed more of our nations heritage by design after the war than the enemy air raids achieved during the war.
Thanks very much for your comment. It is certainly a hideous structure, and has the effect of splitting Magdalen Street in half.
Could you make a video about the old Earlham Road/Unthank Road/St. Giles Street junction and what has been changed?
I think I have already done it...try this video. ua-cam.com/video/ppz15Y7_xg8/v-deo.html
@@JohnAtkinsLostNorwich Thanks
Top marks on your announcement, John - Norwich thanks you. Oh, and congratulations on making another informative video about a part of the city which we often ignore.
Many thanks for your comment, Alfred.
Excellently informative as ever. Good luck with the plaque restoration idea - some of them desperately need it.
Thanks Martin, they certainly do.
Progress, I guess. Sad loss of some lovely yards and houses. Plus ca change.
Indeed. But I guess a degree of slum clearance too. Just a shame the result is an ugly monstrosity which has split Magdalen Street in two. Thanks for your comment.
Another interesting video and such a fantastic channel. Thank you for all the work you’re doing in putting these together.
Thank you, I appreciate your comment 👍
As Catholics we used to go to st George's Church which on fisher gate now the cardboard factory
Thank you Jack, for that detail. It just illustrates to me that there is still an awful lot for me to learn about this city - I was completely unaware of that!
@@JohnAtkinsLostNorwich It was more of a Chapel than a church, but it was beautiful inside. I believe it closed its doors in 1965 and moved to st George's we now see on Sprowston road.
I lived in the last house next to the flyover on peacock street as a student 30 years ago (1:30),the top window was my room, the car park was a Jacks (reclamation) yard, and office of the CLCIA (the Campaign to Legalise Cannabis International Association) set up by Jack Girling.
Thanks for adding all those details. Your window view sounds like it was interesting!
Another interesting video, John. Did I miss you saying when the flyover was built? 😲
Thanks John, no you didn't miss it! It was 1971/2.
In the 1980s I used to visit Jack's Yard in what's now the car park in the corner of St Crispins Rd and Peacock St. It was a warren of hundreds of secondhand doors and windows. The rather beshevelled long-haired proprieters seemed to be stoned most of the time and I remember going there once in the middle of a police raid. I can't remember what happened to it - did it burn down or just get cleared away?
Thanks for your comment Stefan. Sorry I don't know the answer to your question. Can't visualise it at all I'm afraid.
Burned down then cleared away. Can't remember when. 1990s, 2000s?
Green’s Lane (continuation of Cherry Lane) was where the composer and child prodigy William Crotch was born in 1775. He was the first principal of the Royal Academy of Music, and probably composer of the Westminster Chimes (Big Ben), I don’t know if there is a blue plaque to him in the area, but there should be…
Thanks very much for adding that information 👍
Thanks so much , so interesting, I live on Barrack street
thanks Emma, it's a slightly shorter road these days!
At 2:40 the shop on the right (Stalks) was John Carmichael Darts and Trophies in the 80’s. Spent many hours in there as a youth and budding Junior Norfolk County darts player (need to do a spotlight on the old Norfolk Darts and Social Club that used to be on Rosary Road) 😉
Actually, my next video is about Rosary Road, and I haven't heard of that. Google doesn't seem to have any info. If you can point me to a picture in the next couple of days I might be able to include a reference to it.
@@JohnAtkinsLostNorwich I have scoured the internet but can find no images of Rosary Road in days gone by that highlight the area. There are images of the gas tower and pub plus the old Nest football ground but nothing in between. If you look at Google Earth the new housing estate built on the old Nest ground, it was in this area the old Norfolk Darts and Social Club sat. The original first Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses is also on the old Nest site
@@JohnAtkinsLostNorwich here’s a suggestion John for Lost Norwich; houses of interest. Couple come to mind; Point House at the intersection of Sprowston Road and Magdalene Road and 1 Drayton Road now called John Boag House. This latter home was owned by family friends, the Lovelbadges in the 70’s and I remember going to visit as a boy. Both homes seem to potentially offer some historical interest but I know nothing about them really
@@DJWerkz thanks, I think I've got it. Does the phrase Chalk Hill House ring a bell?
@@DJWerkz thanks for the suggestion, I'll add it to my list!
Another great informative video about losr scene's of norwich, and a great idea to revitalise the historic plaques
Thank you Alan.
Interesting video, not a part of the city I know that well.
Great idea about the upkeep of plaques 👍🏾
Thanks Callum, it seems no one knows how to get these plaques replaced 🤔. Hopefully one day someone will know and tell me..!
This was so interesting. I've been tracing my family tree and just yesterday found a branch of the family who were living in Cherry Lane - amazing timing.
Thank you from a Norfolk Dumpling for making these wonderful videos.
Thanks Jan, that's quite a coincidence!
@@JohnAtkinsLostNorwich hi. Wish I could talk to u I live in Norwich for 47 years I am so ingulfed in the history and esp Norwich ghosts. I do ghost walks all the time I want do my own tube on Norwich ghosts but don’t know to start. Watching all ur videos. Such shame how Norwich has changed but nice see lot off original features still remain. To day I’m walking from Adam eve river along black friars bridge past ducking stool sign to haunted house house on Magdalene street number 19. Then cathedral and if energy I’ll keep walking. Absolutely obsessed with Norwich. And old Norwich and more importantly the ghosts off Norwich 👻👻👻👻

So interesting as always 😊
Thank you Donna. Happy New Year!
I am gob smacked by this transformation, I thought I liked the flyover but now I'm not so sure! It's changed soo much! I hope you can contribute to restoring some plaques, have you heard anything?
I believe the plaques may be the responsibility of Norwich Society. So far I have just over £100 from UA-cam advertising. So it'll take a while to raise a significant sum, unless a video goes viral, but when I've got a few hundred pounds I'll contact Norwich Society.
@@JohnAtkinsLostNorwich that is quite an amount still! You're doing well! I never got into the UA-cam Creators business, too busy!
@@MrBloodthirstyalex I'm retired, so this keeps me busy!
