    Best SD2IEC tutorial on youtube - simple and effective. Using an Amiga as the file "host" was a great extra. Thank you a lot!

    I just got one of those card readers for the C64 and watching your video I was able to get my C64 up and running in less than 10 minutes and I did fill the SD card full. Thanks for making this video and making it simple.

    Good work man! It's great you took the time to explain.
    I don't think that people realise the joy of buying an old computer on ebay, and attaching one of these devices. Effectively you have the computer you always wanted as a child, but with every game ever released for it.
    It's truly Retro Gaming Heaven. Did it with my BBC, and now I'm doing it with a C64 using one of these! Can't wait. Emulators don't compare to playing on the original hardware.

      Kookytech.net (techguruuk) can't say I agree and it's only because of the slowness in load times. The systems themselves are cool but there has to be some way to get around that lag.

    Back in the early 80's I was a commodore king. Vic 20 bought in 1982, C64 Bought in 1985, C128D bought in 1986. I had modems, Printers, extra memory but the single best thing was the CBM D9090 10 MB hard disk drive. I was able to put ALL of my floppy discs (hundreds) on that one hard drive. It was pretty fast too for Commodore standards. I was the Shit.

      Back in the early 80's, nobody knew what came after kilo > mega > giga and we even pronounced it incorrectly in a movie, 1.21 Jigga-watts.
      2019, we have a Terabyte on a Micro-SD Card that's as big as your finger nail, and 2mm thick.
      2029, a "Tera Byte???? Is that, like a 1000th of a Petabyte?"

    A very nice, articulate, presentation. Only one point which may be a minor slip-up: When you see the horizontal bars of colour flicker, if the game has finished loading, this is far more likely to be a visual effect to keep you amused as the file decompressor works rather than an effect to amuse you during io/loading. :)

    Even though I'm not interested in the C64, I still watched the video as I love how enthusiastic you are about the system. Nice to hear someone still calling them directories as well, I always think of folder(s) as simplified Windows 95 talk for the technically dim :)

    Nice video! Love the shirt. I agree about the breadbox model being the definitive version. At any rate, this was very helpful to me. I have a C64 currently collecting dust. I have a few games on floppies, but I don't want to wear them or my drive out unnecessarily. This solution seems ideal (not to mention fun to set up and aesthetically pleasing!)

    That was really good . I sold my 64 in 1990 to get an Amiga . Never really got on with the Amiga though and miss my 64 and 1541 , had geos too and a disc full of public domain software including a Sid player jukebox . Also had demos on cassette . Had a vic 20 around 84 and a c16 used to keep selling and buying g different ones . First was a zx81 in 84 , then dragon 32, vic 20 !spectrum 48 , Sony MSX in 85 in 89 I finally got the big one the C64 . Early to mid 90s used Atari st a lot

    AmigaOS can read Fat32 formatted partitions yeah, as well as EXT iirc, but natively it uses SFS/SFS2 and the old amiga FFS and OFS disks still work fine. But using Fat32 USB drives is an easy way to move between a PC,

    We all have our own little oddities like that I think! The only CBM disk drive I have at the moment is a 1551 for the Plus/4 so it's my only option for the 64, but it does work well. I do fancy getting a 1541 soon though as well, there is something satisfying about using old floppies.

    True that the 1541 Ultimate is more compatible with demos and fast loaders, but it is also much more expensive. There are versions of most games I've seen for the SD2IEC though, you can download specially made pack with fixed versions from the official site which all work.

    The redesign was based on the C-128 when that came out. I actually had a C-128 when I was 11 years old. I got rid of it when I was about 18 or 19 years old along with the C-128 dsdd floppy 5 1/4 drive.

    What i found really interresting is how this sd card device emulates the floppy disk drive,and because of that,a modulator has to convert the modulated signal from the c64 disk output back to digital in order to fit on the sd card,when data from the sd card is loaded to the c64,the modulator has to convert that data to analogue for transfering,the c64 will then convert it back to digital for proccesing.
    The flide side button switch on the sd flashcard is very interresting as you can swirch from rom part 1 on side A to rom part 2 on side B wich again nicely emulates the A & B side of the floppy disk.
    So assuming,once you selected a game from the os menu,the flash card will then store that rom into i't's 2 sections of ram to replicate side A & B.to switch from it once needed.

  • @WarbirdGames
    @WarbirdGames 6 років тому

    OK, I did some research and finally figured out how to use the disk swap. It's actually pretty convenient, and has to do with generating a .lst file in the disks folder, and pressing the swap button. You'll see a flash to let you know you're on the next disk. This could get confusing for something like the Ultima series which uses lots of different disks. Would be nice if it at least flashes to indicate the disk # you are on, but I don't know if that's the case. You can navigate to a disks folder and press the two buttons at once to auto-generate a swap list, BUT it still will not recognize it until you rename the file from .gen to .lst for some reason.
    Also, it appears that you can press "Q" to escape this FB loader menu and then you're just within either a folder on the SD or within a D64 disk file, and you can navigate around in basic. I'm still unclear on whether or not you can do this to save and load your own basic programs. That would be great to know.
    You can see a demonstration of the whole process here: ua-cam.com/video/FSs_RABzUw4/v-deo.html

    1: install a JiffyDOS kernel in your C64 wil speed up the loading time and is easy to use. Or you don't want to change/mod your systeem you can pick up a Power Cartridge.
    2: NAV96 is also a very nice c64 browser, files sorting is better on this program.

    Nice video, also the monitor is more important than the connector, S-video on a 1701 monitor looks worse than composite on a Sony Trinitron portable from the mid 80s :)
    Very few games work with SD2IEC I find because it does not emulate the 1541 drive well enough to handle many loading routines even on cracked games downloaded from GB64 or in the TOSEC. Pretty much limited to those in the Blast collection of cracks.
    Unfortunately the 1541 ultimate is 400% the cost so there is no easy solution especially if you want to load TAP[E] images etc.

    • @danwood_uk
      @danwood_uk  10 років тому

      I've not found many games that won't work on the SD2IEC, yes some of the loading routines are not emulated but there are several fixed versions and fully set-up diskswap-lists in the SD2IEC with the majority of the popular titles www.sd2iec.co.uk/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderfiles/SD2IEC_Collection.rar

    No there is no exit hotkey :( But you can make 2 reset buttons, 1 for the C64 and the another one for the SD2IEC/floppy drives. When you only reset the C64 and not the SD2IEC drive. Then the SD2IEC wil stay on the last dir/d64 last loaded. When you reset the SD2IEC it wil go back to the root of the SD card.

    I’ve noticed more than one person from the U.K. calling the Commodore 64 the “Commodore Sixty-Four” but then calling the Commodore 128 the “Commodore One-Two-Eight”. I wonder why that is. In North America I don’t think we do that. I thought i’ve always heard the C128 as “One twenty eight”. Unless I’m crazy.
