Ok beer traps just encourage them to come for 50 years now ive been leaving nettles and brambles wild i don't like getting stung and they don't so leave nettles and brambles wild around beds little damage for over half a century now happy gardening Richardx

Thank you. Very informative. I have too much snails and they are out of control. I collected garden leaves and branches piled into the compost. Each night I can collect a full Walmart bag of snails. Last year, we had a freeze under 10F degree. This year I have less, but they multiplies so quick. My only way to keep them out of my garden is built a rough wall around the vegetables and pick them up each night.
What do you mean by "rough wall"?
I still say by far the best way to reduce slug and snail numbers is to physically get rid of them. Either have something that finds them very tasty (note that hedgehogs and slow-worms do this too), or go out just after sunset with a pair of scissors and a torch and kill every one you can find. After a few days of doing that, you'll find the numbers are greatly reduced.
Try scattering potassium chloride after every rain around plants for slugs. Its fertilizer too.
It'd be great to see more content on DE. From what I gather, soft-bodied insects like aphids & slugs are unaffected, presumably because they don't have an oil coating like arthropods do?
Thank you for this video! I'll try out commercial snail bait, as I do have a serious snail problem. I caught about twenty just this morning. They ate off all the leaves of my young turkish nut bush and started to feed on my eggplants 😢 Even tough, there is plenty of deconposing plant material for them.
I use blackberry vines. You can use any type of thorny vine, but we have lots of blackberries where I live. Just lay two or three layers of thorny vines around the border. The slugs can't get over them without impaling themselves...

I have spent my day sprinkling crushed garlic and pushing garlic cloves in my vegetable bed because I read online that it kills the slug? I found two, sprinkled a bit of garlic on it and they didn't seem to like it. I don't know if it killed them or not, but them not liking it is all I need. What's your view on garlic?
A chemical extracted from garlic does kill slugs, but this does not mean it deters slugs or that the concentration in garlic kills them. www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2003/09/030912071959.htm

Question: can I put snail pellets in a snail trap i.e. the small green trap box featured in your video? Product information for snail traps are that they are for beer traps.
Slug baits usually have an attractant that brings them to the bait, so it should work.
The commercial before your video was too get rid of pigeons, I once tamed a wild pigeon. I named him Phil, and he would let me pet him and stuff. He lived on my balcony but then we had to part ways cuz he pooped too much. Too rid of a pigeon that you are friends with, simply pour out ground black pepper wherever they roost. It irritates their feet without really hurting them, so they will move. Hopefully that helps some one. And I have made beer traps for snails before that work really well, the only problem for me is I live by a river so in no time at all they fill the trap and then just crawl out off all the dead bodies. Im hoping you have some natural tips?
Empty the traps more often or use larger traps.
I've seen quite a few of those bettles in my wood chips. A lot of bugs in fact but definitely a ton of spiders!

Thank you. Very helpful. What about flies? I live in an urban area with houses so code together and businesses with dumpsters close by. I've noticed that in the peak of summer especially, too many flies accumulate in my garden so I'm always removing the dying off plant material. I use fly traps but it doesn't do much
I have recently bought a fly trap by Rescue, Outdoor Fly Trap, it works amazingly. Read the instructions before opening the bag. It states it will catch 20000 flys before disposal, and that’s the truth.
I like toads hanging around my garden. They are pretty opportunistic feeders and always seem to be hungry. The more toads the fewer snails. They work the night shift while I sleep and do a great job at reducing the snail population. Another great anti-snail device is keeping a big rock handy. I won’t describe how this helps with snail control but I do find it a bit therapeutic in one sense and although it’s not the most efficient way of pest control it does help in the vegetable garden to reduce the snail population. Land snails are hermaphrodites having both male and female reproductive organs but usually they need a partner although some go solo. They can lay as many as 50 eggs (some species it can be as many as 100) in the topsoil “nest” and in about 4 weeks they hatch and in just over a months time they can be sexually mature and start reproducing. So getting rid of just one snail can have a big impact upon the backyard snail population. Having garden mulch is a great way to provide habitats for toads to prosper and help control the population. It’s easier to encourage toads to live in your garden than wasting time trying remedies that are ineffective and costly when toads are basically free, requiring no salary, only a safe haven and they will reward you with a means of snail control better than anything I could ever do although I still keep my rock handy! 😂😉
Try nematodes, safe easy natural and cheap.
If you really want to keep slugs off your plant pots, just smear lithium automotive grease around the pot. They can't gain a vertical purchase and will just keep sliding off.
For the beer trap, try not using a container with sloping sides like that.
We've always used jam jars, so the sides are sheer.
I stopped cleaning my strawberries and use Sluggo. Now I have strawberries to eat. 😊

Wood on the ground in general attracts snails and slugs. I can go out in my yard anytime and pick up any 2x4 or plank and guaranteed too find slugs and snails, although have had no problem with wood chips? Although the wood chips I use are from my chicken coupe full of poop that I turned to mulch, dont know if that makes a difference?
Wood on the ground also attracts ground beetles, which prey on slugs.
Slugs went trough a nasty divorce and lost their house…..

I read that slugs do not like crossing sandpaper. Do you have any experience with this?
The best home remedy for snails and slugs is tide (or any other laundry detergent that is in powdered form) mixed in water. Add about one and a half tablespoons of tide in a liter of water, shake well and spray in the problem area. Spray late in the afternoon when it is a little cold but not in extreme heat. Avoid spraying on young leafy vegetables.
Sorry - but I really doubt that works. It will just get absorbed into the soil.
What about distance? If you grow lettuce in a hanging basket four feet off the ground, would they try to get to it? What about a raised bed on legs?
Do you have any recommendations for dealing with Japanese beetles? Do you get them in the Guelph area? There is a massive infestation in my area of south Mississauga.
We get them. Don't use the commercial traps unless you can site them far from your plants. Hand picking works. Need works if you can spray them. Nematodes for your lawn work - but follow directions precisely.

I have a 80% concrete garden with a raise brick plant bed in the middle and a mud side path covered in slate, but I went into my garden an hour ago and to my shock there was at least 200 snails I was so shocked, it’s been raining on and off here in the UK for two weeks but I am shocked how many there was, I want to build a garden pond but I’m worried that the garden snails and slugs will destroy the pond and fish, any advice will be very appreciated
Birds, (starlings) spiders and ground beetles are it's natural enemies.
Ants are, too, but you don't really want an infestation of those either.
Ground beetles are attracted by piles of leaves or timber and stones, or just timber, so if you run a tight ship you may consider such untidiness not worth the bother.

FoodPURA Food Grade Human Diatomaceous Earth is apparently the one to get, its also worth trying encouraging thrushes and blackbirds that love to eat them. Me I used jars buried to the neck and filled with beer, they love the yeast, got a friend that makes beer?
I wrapped to top 3rd of my bird feeding pole with copper tape and I haven’t seen a slug/snail on it. They crawl up to it but not on it. Success so far, I was waking up to 10+ snails on the bird food in the morning. Gross. Time will tell.
Is there somewhere to buy live ground beetles? I'd like to set some loose in my garden.
You'd have to consider the habitat they require.

Hi just found this video and it’s very interesting, however any idea what I can do with fungus gnats, all my outdoor pots and grow bags have them. Too much rain here isn’t helping

@@Gardenfundamentals1 I was just about to recommend the same. Some claim 3% hydrogen peroxide works as well.
Unfortunately australia doesn’t have many snail predators cos they are an invasive species here. Like don’t get me wrong we have our own species too but the ones that are in our gardens are mostly not from Australia. I mean some things eat them but just not enough predators unfortunately.
You should at lest made some alternative exits to give them some choice. If you surrounded them with something, what else could they do?

That may work. Earlier I noticed a snail being forced away from the copper tape I have around my plant pots. The copper mesh did the same.

There are nematodes that attack snails and slugs - available in Europe but not North America.

Only issue with your test is that there should be an area in the doughnut where there is a clear exit to indicate perhaps when POSSIBLE the slugs would avoid x material but if there is no other options the creature will take what ever path it can.
If they are really repelled by the material - they will not cross it - example dry diatomaceous earth. You can also watch them as they approach the material.
I HAVE USED SWING POOL SALT. GRIND IT OR EVEN BUST IT DOWN WITH HAMMER. SPREAD THE DUST AROUND GARDEN.BETTER THAN NOTHING..
Except that sodium is toxic to plants and microbes.

i have used nemitodes, they are really good for slugs and i cannot find slugs in my garden. they dont work well on snails as snails dont eat thier dead

best way i been using for 10 years is wire with 9 volt battery!!!
@LisaLouNZ I wrap my 4x4 bed with 2 individual strands of copper wire and space them about 1/2 inch apart stapleing them to my raised box then at the end i connect both wires to a small 9 volt battery i keep in a small tupperware container just put 2 small holes for wires to go through . you can see how its done on youtube just search slug control and there are many videos on how to do it and for me it works great

Salt will do it but it washes away. If it soaks into the ground it kills the plants then there's nothing for the slugs to eat, and they go elsewhere! Winner.

Salt is the best way to kill snails and slugs.
That requires you to apply it to them directly. You quickly get overwhelmed with hunting them.

Take a skinny stick wet the end dip it salt and touch the slug.. job done! I put on my headlamp and go sluggin' every night.
