I don't kill slugs but I deter 99.9% of them with two strips of copper tape or wire around my veg beds connected to a battery. The gruesome gastropods will cross the first strip but as soon as he/she touches the second placed about 3/8 inch away the circuit is made and they coil back with a severe headache. Amazing sites and information, so tghank you very much. I live here in Nova Scotia Canada and I use seaweed in my garden and it stops snails all together. You layer the seaweed ontop of the garden and as it drys the snails will not crawl across it. Plus the seaweed gives amazing fertilizer to the garden
I’m in San Diego near the coast and snails are everywhere. Before I built my raised bed, I cleared the fence, Iceplant, and area where it be. I picked off the fence more than 40 snails over 3 days and tossed them into the canyon. I bought Corry’s Slug/Snail Killer. Followed the instructions, and haven’t seen them since.
I've just always bought Safers natural slug bait from my hardware store. It's volcanic ash pellets. Wet it, they eat it. Wrecks their guts. Seems to be good for 2 weeks of slug free gardening before slug issues start up again.
Living in England all of my life, I had a lot of issues with slugs and snails, as you can imagine. I tried so many things to stop them, but nothing worked. You are certainly correct about the myths, however I find copper has an issue. Copper will get dirty fairly quickly, which means that the slimy things will get over unharmed. You will also need to renew it frequently. I found just 2 deterrents from getting to my produce. Unfortunately I couldn't attract frogs. I will do a video on this as well soon. Yours reminded me that I am still to do it. Thank you, as always great viewing. I have a long way to catch up on my channel.
I've found that cinnamon is very effective at controlling slugs. Salt is also effective, but you don't want to use that near soil obviously. But, it works great in dark stairwells or other areas where it stays cooler and they can hide out during the day.
Great video. I came here because I have a constant battle with slugs and snails in my garden here in UK. Coffee grounds don’t work, you are absolutely right! One thing I have been using that does seem to work is a garlic wash. I water my dahlias and chard with it and it does seem to deter them.
I've had some luck with those copper plated pot scrubbers. You can unravel them, forming a mesh tubular netting. Each one is about 18 inches long and can be stretched around a medium planter and twist tied in place. It makes about a 2 inch barrier. Two for a buck at Dollar Tree.

My Dad grew up in a farm that had tons all the time in IA. I make pies & crisps & jams. Unfortunately I only container garden & don't know anyone who grows it.
In Oregon, and I have no problems with anything eating my rhubarb leaves, but they eat cucumber plants, melons and lettuce. My rhubarb is so big, that I need to divide it this fall.
I currently have all of these - rats, slugs, snails and worst of all squirrels. Loads of birds who of course eat none of these and next door's cat who doesn't hunt rats. 😬 Trying to encourage hedgehogs in to eat slugs and snails but getting rats instead.😬 Haven't got snakes though (this is London!).🤔
Popped down the garden tonight to bring in the washing and find I've got bats now too! It's like a zoo of useless wildlife! Do bats eat slugs or squirrels by any chance? I do get foxes occasionally but instead of eating the rats they just scream all night. 🙄
One thing I found that works great is twist ties that have spikey burs on them for decorating I guess, but can be found at the dollar store and you just have to make a circle with it around your plant. Slugs and snails hate spiny things , so they will crawl up to it hit the spines and crawl away. Hope this helps someone.
Hedgehogs Brian!! They're the gardeners best friend in UK/Ire!! Only native ones though, not the light coloured little pet ones. Regarding others, I found beer traps effective, but they seem to attract slugs from far away so I only use them where a plant has frequent visitors, like my cabbages this year. I've tried diatomaceous earth/celite in a spray but have yet to find a sprayer nozzle that doesn't block. Copper tape is good, but can tarnish have a film after outdoor exposure, I use a little scrubby pad to brush it up. Garden is too dry for frogs, and finally snakes/lizards....I live in Ireland man, St. Patrick drove all the snakes out years ago! :D
This was very interesting. I have not seen snails or slugs in my garden, but that doesn't mean they aren't there by any means. I like the copper tape idea for seedlings.
There used to be an enormous bullfrog in my yard... had to do everything to keep my dog away from it. Always seemed to find hum buried in the dirt where I planned to dig... maybe where my dog was digging, too... hmmm. Haven't seen him yet this spring...and slugs got all my seedlings whereas they never touched them before. Copper it is!
I have had slugs bad this year. I used Epsom salt, sprinkled around my raised beds and in the base of my tomato pots. I find spots that use to be a slug. About completely stopped my problem. Guess you could say it stopped them in their tracks!
@@MsTruthhurts007 I haven't tried using it around the flowers. I know tomato's they say to put a sprinkle to help the plant so I did just that. I have wood mulch around all my raised beds so I wasn't as concerned of it hurting veggies. Might try around one to see. I am just getting into flowers so I won't be a lot of help on lilies.
I've tried everything you mentioned except reptiles (I'd rather have the snails). I find a nightly snail hunt works the best. Armed with a Ziploc baggie with a teaspoon of salt dissolved in 2/3 cup of water, I roam the perimeter of my property plopping every snail I find into the baggie. The first night I got 50, every night after that the numbers declined until I was down to 5 or so. Zip up the baggie and throw it in the garbage - problem solved. The best time to find them is after you have watered your lawn or garden in the evening.
Thank you for telling about the salt. After you said that I look a plastic cup with real salty water And the snails sunk To the bottom. Lot easier then smashing them. Not quite so yucky. I have so many snails here.i keep putting sluggo down and find lot of dead emails but seems like there is a million more
@@pjrobben7613 Hi I save on soap and water and just stomp them. Doesn't bother me a bit. I work my bee hind off for this garden and their not getting em. Awwww, poor babies 😩not
I have a pond. It took a couple of years for the frogs and toads to find it but find it they did. My neighbours are complaining about the croaking night racket and they (not the neighbours) don’t seem to eat the snails with the hard shells 😡
Really glad to hear Sluggo is not harmful because last year I applied so much of it , ( there were slugs in my turnip bed, my peas and even my sunflowers, carrots) ... everything was white. We had so much rain last year!!! I tried just about every thing you mentioned, except the snakes and lizards, with no success. until I tried Sluggo 👩🏽🌾👍🏽🧡🧡🧡🧡 Works great!!
I like your sense of humor. I would say that slugs "shimmy" across :) We have lizards in the cottage garden and they do a great job on the slugs and snails.
Three things that work for me: Narrow copper strips definitely don't work. Two strips spaced about a half inch apart work better. But the ultimate is to connect a waterproofed 9v battery to the two strips. The snails will happily go across the first strip, but when they reach the second strip, they complete the circuit and get 9v running through them. They move back very quickly. It doesn't harm them, but it's an effective barrier. Something that is available in the UK (I don't know about other countries) is packets of live, nematodes. These are microscopic worm-like creatures and there are millions of them in each pack. You put them in a watering can and water your garden. The slugs and snails eat the nematodes, which then start to eat the slug/snail from the inside, killing them. As the nematodes are alive, you have to use them as soon as you get them (or keep them sealed in their pack in the refrigerator for a couple of days). They work and can be effective for about 6 to 8 weeks. In the UK and much of Europe, Asia and Africa, we have the luxury of a small, spiky, nocturnal creature; the hedgehog. If you're fortunate enough to have one or more in your garden, they will eat as many slugs and snails as they can find. I get a family of 3 hedgehogs visiting my garden most nights and they are most welcome.
I have had great success serving beer to slugs. It is also enjoyed by the earwigs. A few large bottles of cheap beer protected our garden very well last year.
We use slugo. And we’ve tried many other products. But what we’ve found is that no matter what we use, once it rains or once we have watered well...nothing works and has to be reapplied. 😞 Here in Oregon it’s a constant battle
I watched your video and I bought sluggo. I’ve had snails for a few years in my garden but when I went to put the sluggo on I noticed that there were only snails shells left. I also noticed there was a large lizard in the garden and I think it ate all the snails. Thank you for your advice.
My yard and garden has 1000s of snails. (FYI the brown pointy ones will eat the round ones) I finally resorted to using Sluggo which I had bought several years ago and never used. I can tell you it works. We've been having torrential rains here, so I'll have to reapply it. Thinking about those ducks, though.
ducks are AMAZING at eating slugs!! soon there will be none and then I started digging worms for my grrrls. The best ducks for brains and being good pets (almost dog like) are the muscovies; quiet, quackless ducks. Face only a mother could love but once You get used to them, You will be forever hooked! And duck eggs are a thousand times better than chicken eggs. can't make good French pastry without ;-) They are messy and LOVE their water though... Need a small coup to be protected from predators while they sleep but... if all that is OK... You will never have another bug of any kind.
Two things work for me ,nasturtium is loved more than my veggies so very little damage.Next I dry and use m blackberry prickly stem that works well. I,m going to try copper pot scrubbers next !
I saw a video on the Proven Winners channel where they said that some university in Oregon did a study and found that bread dough in a cottage cheese or other deep container was the best way to catch snails and slugs. In one 48 hr period they caught like 18,000 snails and slugs. They said it was the yeast in the bread that attracted them. PS, I hate snakes too!
Egg shells work very well for me. I use them in flowerpots, and they also serve as fertilizer. The beer works well also, I never buried a cup, but simply placed a plastic cup firmly in my garden, the snails crawled up and into the cup and drowned.
i have used copper foil tape for over 40yrs and it works great for pots and raised beds so you can keep them away completely. their slime makes a battery and actually generate electricity that shocks them. just make sure there is nothing bridging the copper mote like a plant growing up past it 🙂
Hi. Love your back yard landscaping. Just found your video as I have a issue with snails all over my house and pool deck. I actually don’t have any gardens. But still have this issue. I bought sluggo but haven’t used yet and thinking how in the hell is this going to work on the hard surfaces if it’s a granular? Any thoughts? Do I dilute it to spray?
Here in Norway we have an invasive shell-less snail species that has no natural enemies. My goto remedies are to clear underbrush/weeds to limit hiding spots for snails and do a daily perimeter patrol at dusk with a pair of scissors
Coffee grounds work. Worked for me. Zero snails this year in my strawberries and I lost next to no strawberries to slugs. And it has been plenty wet out, too. Last year without coffee grounds we lost plenty to snails and slugs, this year no snails and very few slugs.
No slugs or snails here this year. We are on the drought side but, I did try beer when we had slugs when I lived in rain country in AK. Beer did not work. Not one drown slug. My method was to pick off the slugs and put them in ziplocks, ewwww! Wish I’d known about Sluggo back then. Thank you for another great vid.
This was helpful! I've got a ton of mulch down and I think that's what is causing my slug infestation (the ground staying moist). Happy to hear you recommend sluggo. I've been using Garden Safe slug bait but can't find it in stores anywhere right now. Apparently all the local gardeners are fighting the same foe.
I have several anole lizards that live in my garden, small frogs which I hear at night, and I have started using slugo. In the past, there have been snails, but they haven't done a lot of damage, and I have never seen slugs. But this year there are almost no snails, but the population of slugs has grown to almost plague level in my garden (the only difference this year is I have added a lot more mulch due to soil erosion in the yard itself, and for moisture retention in the garden). I have several anoles that live in the garden, and have sprinkled Slugo around, plus went on a few 'hunts' where I just caught and killed any I could find, and while the numbers have somewhat decreased, they are still everywhere and doing damage.
We keep a plastic container of table salt or Epsom salt near the front and back door. As we see slugs we cover them in it and they curl up and die. We also toss a tiny bit around the garden and grass and it helps control them. Both the salt and Epsom salt are safe for my dog.
African snail big problem every gardener , there are many snail in my garden eat my vegetable they are come at night time for me i am check at time before i going to bed thanks for sharing to us such educational experience
diatomaceous earth just clumps when wet and is useless. I used nematodes to eradicate my slug problem but ended up with a horde of snails which were much worse. Can I attract the slugs back?
I grow tomatoes, peppers and zucchini. I noticed a lot of holes on my peppers. I read to search for slugs with a flash light after dark suggested by a comment in your sites. Sure enough. I just did search with my flashlight I just discover 20 minutes ago I saw the Slugs. Tinny slugs were eating free without being invited. I picked them out and my son said to spread salt at the bottom of my pepper container.. I will check next day to see if this work. Thank you for your great suggestions.
I have used Sluggo for years. They have Sluggo Plus now, which is an improved product. We have LOADS of snails here in South Texas but Sluggo Plus helps the population. It's great for pill bugs too.
I used to use the sluggo plus as it also kills earwigs too! but... the spinosad is not good for the bees and worms so... went back to sluggo regular. all I do is remember to do my perimeters 3-4 times a year and never get a slug inside the yard so I don't have to treat everywhere... unless I forget a couple of times :-(
Just saw a video of using chunks of Irish Spring in little pouches or socks attached to plant poles near your veggies. Humans love the aroma of it but critters and bugs don't. You would have to change them once a month when the smell dissipates. Also a Dollar Store buy. Hope this helps.
I saw a harmless snake in my garden a month ago and I screamed and ran for my life. It took me weeks to feel safe in the garden again and even now I still scout out the area before I go there. I will try the frog thing though and a duck recommended in the comments. Ty for the info. Maybe do a vid on how to get rid of snakes lol.
I have never found anything that truly eradicates slugs & snails, although I do have blackbirds in my garden & they love eating them. Therefore I have decided to live the slimy little pests, but I do give my most tender plants, such as Hostas, that are preferred by them a regular garlic wash & they never touch them.
I'm a second year gardener and have slugs. I can't stand those MONSTERS! I have been using D.E, and salt.I saw someone say use sluggo. Im planting next year in bins and planters .I made a mistake and did straw bales and all that watering attracted the slugs.I didn't know I had them.ugh
There are huge snails here in my garden, yes since management got rid of mice/rats. They crawl up legs 4 feet to get into my planters!! Cats can be poisoned if they bite one. I def do not want my only food plants to be eaten by snails. Can something prevent them climbing?
There are many videos of snails ignoring copper tape. salt works but better to put on a mat so that it does not go into the soil. We have the Spanish slug in the UK which is double that of the native kind.
Tried crushed oyster shells--a bust; the beer traps attracted & drowned many slugs, but the overall effect seemed to be to bring in even more; the copper strips work--have been using them successfully for years now. Now. How to get rid of 1+ bag of oyster shells & at least 3 slug beer traps....
I live in New Mexico with a lot of roadrunners in the neighborhood. The snails I have in one shady spot, I collect and bring them to the front yard, where the roadrunner can get them!
I’ve had huge success with the beer traps I swear by it and I also have a few ducks that do a great job at keeping the snails and slug numbers down 🐌🦆🍺
I was using beer traps until I kept finding them empty in the morning. At first, I thought it was my husband🤨, but then figured out it was a family of raccoons drinking the beer. I always expected to find them passed out somewhere nearby. 😆
@@bethmartof1262 we don’t have raccoons here in Australia and I’ve had no problems with possums so I guess it will be different depending on the wild life 🙂 hope you don’t find any raccoons passed out or with hangovers 😂
I live in eastern Washington State which is desert and slugs are one of our biggest problems. I have tried everything mentioned (copper wire, not tape) except snakes, lizards, and frogs. I was so excited when I threw a couple slugs into my chicken pen the first time. Nope. They looked at me like I’d poisoned them and wiped their beaks on the ground for 15 minutes (I don’t blame them). I know now that my plants have to be transplanted into the garden after they’ve reached a decent size. Mulch!?! Dont even get me started. Nothing but a slug maternity ward.
I have turtles in my gardens here in southern Maryland, and trust me, they eat slugs. I've watched them do it 😊 The frogs in my garden also help. Since these guys took up residence, I'm a happy gardener. Loved the video as usual! Oh, yeah snakes...just had to say it 😂
Ok ive been gardening for 50 plus years the 1 foot stomachs don't like nettles and brambles so i never chop them down they surround my brassica cages they get stung happy gardening Richardx
The one's in North Georgia are fast to get to my beer. Nothing like a slug on the rim of your beer can at night. I think the one's I deal with are air dropped by parachute.
"Sluggo" isn't available in my part of the world, but "Ferramol" is, and it probably works in the exact same way. The active substance in "Ferramol" is iron in the form Fe3+ (,while moss killers containing iron contains iron sulphate with Fe2+). "Ferramol" is safe for pets and garden birds, but it's an expensive bird feed, so spread/place it wisely.
I have hundreds of lizards, and the occasional garden snake North Florida Atlantic Beach. still getting attacks by snails and slugs eating mine plants, so they might help but it doesn't work for me. I think cleaning the garden tidy , no grass and no leaves to hide out and manual removing them manually sunrise early morning and sunset too is the best answer.
I have used the copper tape in the past.... was growing in containers and would wrap a couple of strips around the container.....I also used sluggo...all worked for me.
I love the idea of adding a water feature. Anyone know (in Zone 10, SoCal) if frogs would naturally show up? if not, where can i find native frogs to introduce?
Yes, they will show up. You can innoculate the pond with a little bit (bucketful) of river/ creek or nearby pond water if you want life to start quicker. It is better for it to be a still pond vs one with fountains. Plant some water loving plants to give shelter to the frog spawn. And stick mosquito dunks in to stop mosquito larvae. Enjoy!!!
Just add goldfish. They eat mosquito larvae. Do not feed the fish after a couple of weeks. They eat the larvae and moss, which will establish itself. Water lillies are a must for water gardens so the goldfish will have shade. Plant in DIRT not pitting mix. The fish will survive the winter without being feed, even with ice on it. Do sweep off the snow. The plants need light or they will die.
Really good video i have tried alot of these things and they have all not worked. The only thing that ive found that works is a flashlight at night and me picking them off one by one with a rubber glove dropping them in a cup of vinegar. Localized watering to prevent extreme moisture helps
Sluggo works. I haven't had a slug and snail problem since the first drought a few years back. They were starved out or dried out. Only recently have I found one or two snails in one of my raised beds. I do what I did before I found out about Sluggo: Pick them up and throw them in the street. It helps seal the McAdam. I used to pay the kids to collect them, too. Nothing like a bribe. However, my neighbor's grand-daughter was visiting one day, and when she saw the snails in the street, she decided to rescue them by re-introducing them to my garden. When she found out I had been throwing them in the street in the first place, she would never have anything to do with me again. The price you pay sometimes!
I have had some success with Indian runner ducks in my garden. The ducks love slugs and snails and don't tear up the plants las much as chickens. They are adorable to watch but do have their drawbacks. They do require alot of care. Actually there are videos of Indian runner ducks trained to rid vineyards of them.
When you started talking about attracting rats my husband yelled helllll nawl 😩😂😭. I have to admit you had me too. I was so shocked but I’m dying laughing now.
Recently I read that Sluggo has a coating that many cats like ..(like mine) and they will seek it out and eat it.. the issue is .. is it is too much IRON and it is toxic to cats. I hide the sluggo under flowerpots.. etc.. so my giant cat does not eat it.. he also like some organic fertilizer he should not eat... but be careful... it can actually harm cats.
How to keep them out of whole garden I don’t grow any plants but my whole garden is leafy and grassy and the slugs don’t be there they be at my garden door
What about salt 🧂? Is there a way to us it effectively? Also copper tape with a battery, 2 thin strips so the slug will complete the circuit, 9volt, dos this work ?
I LOVED this video. I don't usually have problems with this pest - but the humor is great. PS - me and snakes don't mix either. You have a safe ear here! :)
No need to kill. Use strong espresso coffee powder...5/5 or 8/10 which ever you can buy and not weaker coffee bean powder. That is the strength that no slug likes.
I’ve heard all these same stories. Nothing has helped except chickens, birds and me coming out in the middle of the night and hand picking them. Drop them in a bucket with a lid. I keep them alive and in the morning drop them far away in the lawn across the house and watch the crows feast.
That’s hysterical keep them alive so the crows can have a feast LOL brilliant you don’t I have to kill them but take them where something else can kill them. That is really one of the funniest things I’ve ever heard so cute. Personally I just kill the suckers I mean flags lol I hope you read this you are too funny👍😊😊😊😊😊😊
tried coffee and egg shels many times, I vonfirm that does not work: Two things that work fine for me: beer traps and grass traps First one are working best when you take a plastic jar of yogurt, the one slightly cone shape, and with a lid, and cut in opening mid heigh, then bury the botton til the opening: slug will go drown in that beer in droves, and the lid on top will avoid rain to dilute and waste your precious brew Second, dicovered by accident: after mowing the lwan I pour grass in clumps around, this year I used a new ly built compost per (3 pallets in square) the slugs love to stay there! the grass clippings give them food and the pallets shade and repair, so I can easily skewer 10 every night Disavantages: waste of beer (the cheapest from the discount works fine) and every night, as go to bed routine, grab my torch and something sharp and go around my raised beds like a rat, I mean na hungry snake
Best slug and snail eradicators are carniverous snails. We have them in Durban, South Africa. They REALLY work, are non toxic and safe for animals and children.

I currently have all of these - rats, slugs, snails and worst of all squirrels. Loads of birds who of course eat none of these and next door's cat who doesn't hunt rats. 😬
Trying to encourage hedgehogs in to eat slugs and snails but getting rats instead.😬
Haven't got snakes though (this is London!).🤔
All your snakes are in the Parliament.
I love you Gina and wish we were neighbors! Greetings from Ohio!
Popped down the garden tonight to bring in the washing and find I've got bats now too! It's like a zoo of useless wildlife! Do bats eat slugs or squirrels by any chance? I do get foxes occasionally but instead of eating the rats they just scream all night. 🙄
I did put copper tape on my tomato pots and so far the slugs have not been near - probably working up an appetite on all my other plants first ☹️
Glad I just picked some Sluggo! Thanks for the video.
One thing I found that works great is twist ties that have spikey burs on them for decorating I guess, but can be found at the dollar store and you just have to make a circle with it around your plant. Slugs and snails hate spiny things , so they will crawl up to it hit the spines and crawl away. Hope this helps someone.
U
Do you mean the fuzzy pipe cleaners for kids crafts etc?
@adriankap2978 yes exactly
Thanks for that I was going to look up if epsom salt was ok to use 👍. They are eating my lillies which I planted in the ground. I am under attack 😡😠😤
People on your channel have the same sense of humor as you and I love it. They all got jokes🤣
I'm so afraid of snakes too!!! Literally frozen in fear 😱
After you said that I look a plastic cup with real salty water
And the snails sunk To the bottom. Lot easier then smashing them. Not quite so yucky. I have so many snails here.i keep putting sluggo down and find lot of dead emails but seems like there is a million more
Really? I go in the evenings in my garden EVERY EVENING the number of slugs does not decrease.
Look under thing's,during the day they hide, under pot's, stones, rocks.i can't kill them, I throw them in the woods over my fence
Washing up liquid in water kills the buggers, when you see them just drop in the

Hi
I save on soap and water and just stomp them.
Kills earthworms and other innocent bystanders
I like your sense of humor. I would say that slugs "shimmy" across :) We have lizards in the cottage garden and they do a great job on the slugs and snails.
Three things that work for me:
Narrow copper strips definitely don't work.
You had me really nervous for a sec thinking I had to have rats in my garden!! 👏😆
I have HUGE a slug problem on my back patio. I have lizards in my yard, however, they don’t come up on my back patio.
Two things work for me ,nasturtium is loved more than my veggies so very little damage.Next I dry and use m blackberry prickly stem that works well. I,m going to try copper pot scrubbers next !
blackberry stems, genius. turn a nuisance into a friend.
Wonderful information as usual, thank you. Do you have anything on spider mites on banana plants?
Boiled orange peel water sprayed on plants.
I have found that Beer traps do work if there is a lid with a hole in. Ice-cream tubs work as do margarine tubs.
Here in Norway we have an invasive shell-less snail species that has no natural enemies. My goto remedies are to clear underbrush/weeds to limit hiding spots for snails and do a daily perimeter patrol at dusk with a pair of scissors
Yep I do that too, except the scissors lol, I can pick them up and chuck them, but ugh not quite there with cutting them up...yet
Coffee grounds work. Worked for me. Zero snails this year in my strawberries and I lost next to no strawberries to slugs. And it has been plenty wet out, too. Last year without coffee grounds we lost plenty to snails and slugs, this year no snails and very few slugs.
I've used a salt barrier, it works. Has to be renewed a lot, especially in the rainy season.
Does anyone know where I can get Ortho Bug Geta Plus? It contained both metaldehyde and carbaryl. It works WAY better than anything else.
Snail bait kills earthworms, pets, and alot of wildlife. Best option is to buy benefital insects and nematodes that eat pests
I just picked that up on Amazon actually! Does it work well? You just make a wall around the bed?
@@TheNarrationStationX it does work well. I just sprinkle a circle around the base of the plant or row of plants
Thank you for your slug help!
Love your garden!
I just go out when it’s dark with a torch, and squash them
I grow tomatoes, peppers and zucchini.
I used to use the sluggo plus as it also kills earwigs too! but... the spinosad is not good for the bees and worms so... went back to sluggo regular. all I do is remember to do my perimeters 3-4 times a year and never get a slug inside the yard so I don't have to treat everywhere... unless I forget a couple of times :-(
i have more pill bugs than slugs!
I was just researching slugs on cucumbers today. First year dealing with them... not sure what’s going on or what to do about it.
I’m a newbie gardener and will try sluggo as suggested here in some of the comments too!
Can something prevent them climbing?
maybe put copper around those legs??
There are many videos of snails ignoring copper tape. salt works but better to put on a mat so that it does not go into the soil. We have the Spanish slug in the UK which is double that of the native kind.
Tried crushed oyster shells--a bust; the beer traps attracted & drowned many slugs, but the overall effect seemed to be to bring in even more; the copper strips work--have been using them successfully for years now. Now. How to get rid of 1+ bag of oyster shells & at least 3 slug beer traps....
you can also use lime that is use for masonry around your plants or apply it on the slug to kill them.
I live in New Mexico with a lot of roadrunners in the neighborhood. The snails I have in one shady spot, I collect and bring them to the front yard, where the roadrunner can get them!
I must have really dumb & clumsy snails because my beer trap (half a can of beer buried at ground level) caught around 6 snails last night.
This is my electric slug fence in action. Go to 2:00 to see the slug!

Sand or sawdust Is great to spread around as it is too dry for slug but depends on your local climate
I think cleaning the garden tidy , no grass and no leaves to hide out and manual removing them manually sunrise early morning and sunset too is the best answer.
great video!
I have used the copper tape in the past.... was growing in containers and would wrap a couple of strips around the container.....I also used sluggo...all worked for me.
Once dust and dirt get on the outside of the tape they crawl right in over it. I can’t be bothered with cleaning tape.
Love your humor! Thanks for the video :)
Enjoy!!!
If you add a water feature, they will appear.
You are just the absolute best.... WHY AM I SUCH A NERD! (Geeking out over Gardening)
🤣🤣👍
I know salt dirrectly on them kill them almost instantly. So i am wondering if i should put some around my garden or try beach sand maybe¿
Thanks just wanted to confirm the copper wire theory.
Coffee grounds definitely worked to get rid of the frogs in the water feature, maybe that’s why I have so many snails now😢
When you started talking about attracting rats my husband yelled helllll nawl 😩😂😭. I have to admit you had me too. I was so shocked but I’m dying laughing now.
Would copper Pennies in my potted plants work against snails.???
Going to try the copper tape and see if that works.
Thanks for posting this video.
I've got the snails under control but after taking out my tomatoes & cucumber plants I have tons of grubs in the soil! Yuck, how do I get rid of them?
I was once warned that diatomaceous earth would kill worms in the garden. True?
tried coffee and egg shels many times, I vonfirm that does not work:
Two things that work fine for me: beer traps and grass traps
First one are working best when you take a plastic jar of yogurt, the one slightly cone shape, and with a lid, and cut in opening mid heigh, then bury the botton til the opening: slug will go drown in that beer in droves, and the lid on top will avoid rain to dilute and waste your precious brew
Second, dicovered by accident: after mowing the lwan I pour grass in clumps around, this year I used a new ly built compost per (3 pallets in square) the slugs love to stay there! the grass clippings give them food and the pallets shade and repair, so I can easily skewer 10 every night
Disavantages: waste of beer (the cheapest from the discount works fine) and every night, as go to bed routine, grab my torch and something sharp and go around my raised beds like a rat, I mean na hungry snake
Best slug and snail eradicators are carniverous snails. We have them in Durban, South Africa. They REALLY work, are non toxic and safe for animals and children.
