out of all the web sites, this is the first fix i have found for a 2.9 starter grind.thanks duke for the suggestion. im going to beat the hell out of the starter with a rubber hammer.
So you found that the motor was too far away from the flywheel and moving it in towards the motor a smidge fixed it? I just did a manual swap on my f150 with a manual starter and it’s really noisey, and also makes the same bad sound when it disengages. I’ve been told it needs shimmed but I don’t see how that’s going to fix it
that is exactly what i found. the mounting holes on the rebuilt starters get sloppy and the starter can move too far away and only catches the edge of the teeth
Tony Battiselli slightly loosen the mounting bolts and bang the starter towards the engine with a rubber mallet and tighten it back. Should fix the noise
Earlier comment says hit toward the trans ? Also there is little to no room for a mallet or anything ? I’m having this issue on a 89 bronco ii 2.9l. I have new starter and new bolts .Can I use a pry bar maybe ? And pull it back
Christian Jegglie lightly loosen the bolts and push it towards the transmission either with a mallet or prybar tighten the bolts and hopefully it will quiet down. the rebuilt starters have bigger holes which lets them move away from the flywheel.
You said you made follow up video? Did it get removed? I did this method with the mallet and a broom handle since in my bronco there was a crossmember in the way. I pounded pretty hard on the back of the starter while someone re- tightening the slightly loose bolts . But still has the grind? Was fine before my clutch replacement.. thanks for help so far!
Andy Albarran I made a follow up video the problem is the rebuilt starters the holes are slightly elongated.take a rubber mallet and after loosening the bolts slightly knock the starter towards the transmission.tighten them back and try it that's what fixed mine.
I feel so bad 8 years later I wish I could’ve told you it just needed shims 😭
My Bronco 2 87 2.9 l Grinds as well, having to replace the flywheel and starter hoping it will work

i have a chevy with a 8.1 496 big block and i shimed it an sheared teeth off my flywheel use the smallest one at first then go up
