With our current technology making something like the Godwym Dias-Pattern Boltgun wouldn't be too big of a task, it could work like the US MK19 Automatic Grenade launcher, but scaled down to 20mm, and the rocket part shouldn't be an issue, the Gyrojet back in the 60' was an utter failure, but today a skilled artisan with proper machining equipment could make much more reliable rocket ammunition by himself And there you go, just make it fit in a rifle shape and add an electronic ammo counter and you're done, you've got a (less advanced) Bolter.
Problem is the 40mm MK19 is a grenade launcher so it has far less recoil then say 40mm Bofors auto canon, designers have tried for years but ultimately anything above 7.62 (rifle calibre wise) is the limit of what's practical. Yes rifles have been made to shot larger rounds like the 50 Beowulf but their actually practically is questionable
78slaphead78 But the Bolter uses rocket propelled munitions, go on the Taofledermaus UA-cam Channel (or Forgotten Weapons for the history), they shot a Gyrojet pistol, the thing shoots 45. caliber ammo but it has even less revoil than a .22LR, although the Bolters use a kicker charge of actual gunpowder, they wouldn't have much recoil anyway, also because the guns themselves would be rather heavy. The cycling could be completely automated and not reliant on gas like the API system of a MK19 grenade launcher, the bolt carrier could be operated by an independent hydraulic/eletric piston (which would work like actual 40K bolters, afterall they work in space as well) which could probably lighten recoil further more
TheOtakuComrade Then you would have a weapon too bulky/heavy to use. There's a reason all these R&D projects remain R&D projects; they look good on paper but aren't actually remotely practical
78slaphead78 Well, I don't see how that would make it too bulky, it's not like Bolters and Bolt pistols are small anyway, not even Godwyn-Dias ones. At the very least you could make a rotating bolt piston operated one, but I imagine that then you'd probably need a recoil buffer in the stock, or you could further lower recoil by incorporating a counter-balance/counter recoiling piston mass system like the one on AK-107s.
Hey grim will you be doing a video on grav weapons they have always interested me but there’s not much info on them. Also love your vids keep up the good work.
I didn't actually. I didn't mention it because I wanted this series to be dedicated to more or less hand-held weapons. I also talked about the vulcan mega bolter in a titan weapons video :)
As far as pure damage goes, the inkunzi PAW would probably be a good equivalent to a bolter As far as looks, scaled to human usability, with decent damage goes, the origin 12 AOW without any stock with explosive slugs would be a good equivalent
Great video as always grim those boltguns sound so op in the lore but on the broad game there pretty standard in power I do like the volkite chargers which brings me to a question I have for you. the volkite charger do you know if they are still used in 40k? By either character units or special weapons squads the reason I'm asking is because I would like to add that weapon type to some of my space marine squads but haven't been able to find a answer to weather you can for example like some 30k tanks or dreadnoughts they become classed as relic pattern vehicles in 40k so would the volkite charger be classified as relic weapons in 40k. If that's the case then I will know that I can use them and also what unit's I can upgrade with them. which at this point I'm thinking HQ unit's or elites and my chaos army can have some aswell. Thanks for your time and look forward to next video
From what I read, Volkite weapons are still present in the 41st millenium but they are more or less akin to relic weapons. They are very rare and treasured, only use by big-wig officers, mechanicus higher ups or space marine champions. No way are they standard issue to the Guard or something like that.
GrimDark Narrator thanks for replying to my question I had a feeling that the volkite would be classified as relic weapons. Will you be covering the volkite charger lore in its own video? thanks again and look forward to your future video's
Hey, I didnt downvote but this is my first grimdark video and the content is great, but I will say at first I was put off by the accent as it felt a little goofy with some of emphasis you put on certain words in the beginning of the video (your english is great but from a native speaker perspective it just sounded funny) which is the only reason i can come up with as why you would get a downvote. It really is a dumb reason because your content is amazing and I really enjoyed this video but imo its just people that make a judgement in the first 30 seconds whether they will watch the whole thing or downvote because they found the way you talk as different and not off the actual content. Nothing you can really do about it and its great that you have a strong community around you. A few downvotes are not a big deal at all. Keep up the good work and I will be watching more of your videos and subscribing!
The worse thing that will hit you face in war hammer 40000 : A: a laser beam shoot at you make you feel warmer B: chain sword that will cut you face off C: a bullet the side of a bottle of water that have the tendency of going boom boom on impact D: other things that actually make you feel even worse than the previous mentions - Choose the one that you want to be hit the least with
“The Emperor protects...but having a loaded bolter doesn’t hurt either...”
It's more than just a simple weapon. It is a holy symbol, blessed tool of destruction and protection.

Now all you need is a Space Marine to properly use it :D
So you’re telling me Bolters are basically the result of locking an AK rifle and an RPG in the same room and playing “Careless Whisper”? Lit
mix in a grenade launcher too.
lol love the sly marbo name drop, he carries two heavy bolters though
And a lascannon on his shoulders :D
Loved the breakdown of the suites. First time I've heard anyone do it.
Good info on bolters Grim.
Thanks.
The machine spirit. I'm dead. 😂
First video I watched on this channel, came expecting a deep almost terrifying voice, stayed for the real one xD
Thanks :)
Hey grim will you be doing a video on grav weapons they have always interested me but there’s not much info on them. Also love your vids keep up the good work.
Sure, I can cover grav weapons in the future.
Heavy Bolter recoil does not push against Sly Marbo...because no one & nothing dares push against Sly Marbo!😃
I love this guys voice
That's a rare thing to see, lol.
.75 caliber rounds that should be able to damage lightly armoured vehicles!!
It does
If you think about it, a Bolter is basicly a magazine fed, full auto, "man portible" RPG. Far out.
Space Marine Bolter to a hybrid between a RPG and a grenade launcher soar like an assault rifle Hybrid
what is the explosion radius of a single bolter round ?
This is by no means exact or canon, but i'd guess around the range of the average human torso size.
@@GrimDarkNarrator 50/60 cm ?
I call Godwin's law on this video.
I think you forgot the Vulcan mega bolter in that listing at the end

Bolter ammo run way faster and way more penetrative
@@inquisitorkryptman7893 bolters arnt real, that’s why I was listing things that were close enough
@@maladroitknight i know bolter ain't real but if you want something thats close it might be experimental depleted uranium anti tank darth but in 20mm
Combi FTW!
Can you do some videos on xino weapons
You should look in the individual xenos factions playlists. I did some.
Question: can i add or use necromunda gang on my imperial guard army?
Afraid I'm not very knowledgeable on technical game rules. Sorry.
Oh ok
I’d say no but you could proxy them as guardsmen assuming the other players will let you
for the emperor!
What we're volkite weapons, and ty for the awesome content!
KTF! Sly Marbo!
Ahh yes.

Thanks for watching. I will be covering volkite weapons in another video, or include them with another weapon.
GrimDark Narrator cool look forward to it.
Anything that needs to be reloaded is useless in the long-term.
That sounds...heretical?
did the single down voter not even leave a comment as to why, if i downvote something im heated
I doubt most downvoters, regardless of video or channel, bother to leave reasons why. I'm just glad I get very few overall in my videos.

Nope , just imperium weapon
Probably a lasbeam. If it shoots you in the heart or head, you'll die more or less instantly and with way less of a mess.
