Thanks for the review. An interesting factoid that I recently learned is that the most alcohol tolerant animal is the Hamster. In their natural habitat, they store grasses and grain in underground burrows. The grains ferment so their natural forage is high in alcohol. Apparently, researchers have determined that a hamster can consume the human equivalent of drinking 1.5 gallons of Everclear in one hour with no untoward effects or signs of intoxication. So the next time Rex brags about his ability to hold his liquor ask him how he compares to a hamster.
My favorite Macallan was an 18 Year Old from 1989 that I had several drams of up in Banff, Alberta Canada at the Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel. The upper lobby bar, overlooking the valley. There was snow in those days too. Spectacular Macallan is extraordinary stuff.
Just finished my bottle, what a great journey it was. Macallan was holding a public event in town advertising the launch. Got to the meet the brewmaster for Macallan briefly. What a nice experience that was.
I was hanging out with some friends last winter. We where outside near a lake and hade made up a fire to rost some hotdogs and burgers. Nice cold day and alot of snow! I had brought a bottle of Redbreast 12. To share with some of them that claimed to like whiskey. So i poured some for them. Turned around and when I turned back they had poured it down their hot coco... -oooh it was so good they said... haha well well.
I had a friend that would mix my fine Irish whiskey into Coke while I just silently wrung my hands because as the fellows say: The best way to drink whiskey is the way that you like to drink whiskey.
@@georgeorwell126 Ouff! Yeah I have had a similar situation. Chivas 15 year old finiished in grande champagne cask. My friends boyfriend asked to mix it with coke. But there i drew the line haha. Even if the quote goes as you say ;)
Wondering if you guy organize the vault other then by category? I know Daniel talked about getting rid of the almost empty bottles when Rex isn't around. But wondering if different level shelves represent your favorites. Rex put his on the top self where Daniel has to get a ladder and fear of heights if he wants one and Daniel put his on the bottom self where if Rex really wants it, he might have to risk throwing his back out to get it.
I've got unopened editions 2-6. The resell value on these is insane since they were all limited. Saving for either a grand celebration or a rainy day that I need some money 😅
I still have an unopened 40 I bought many many years ago and the price has just skyrocketed over the past two years, I think I bought it for around 900 pounds in duty free over two decades ago and they're going for near 60 THOUSAND dollars now. On one hand I really want to open it but I don't know if I can justify drinking that much money. My 70th birthday is coming up soon so maybe will have to crack it open for that!
Good morning gentleman. Can you shed some light on why scotch whiskey comes in those neat little box containers and why bourbon or American whiskey doesn't do the same? I have so much fun collecting the boxes of scotch as decorations, especially when I buy an expensive or rare whiskey so I can show off to my friends.
I remember them talking about it in a previous video (I think it was for a glenfiddich product or something, as they were one of the first brands to do that), and they said it's entirely a marketing thing to make things seem more fancy (yet still be recyclable/disposable for people that aren't collectors). Where when a bourbon or American whiskey is trying to do a special box to be more fancy in their marketing, they tend to use wood boxes, trying to lean more toward the "rustic charm, made in America by hardworking..." type of marketing that tends to be used more with American whiskeys. I would love for them to go more in depth than that though, as it was a blink and you'll miss it conversation in the middle of just one video.
If I'm not mistaken, almonds and cherries derive their scent from the same base compound: cyanide. Some people say that cyanide smells like cherries, others say almonds, so it could be that you are both smelling smart notes on that, just perceiving it in different ways?
I'm really hoping you guys get a couple butt casks for the distillery. Just for the scene of Danial explaining the advantages of the butt size barrels, while Rex bites his lip trying not to laugh.
Rex and Daniel have changed roles. Today Rex spends much of the episode watching himself on the monitor, that is normally Daniel's thing. Daniel was the chipper one as well.
Daniel is describing the flavours of American oak - which is generally what is used in the production of sherry butts for the Scotch industry. Not European oak as many people have erroneously been led to think. American oak is more frequently used because it generally imparts more flavour than European oak, is easier to work with and, most importantly, is much cheaper than European oak. "Until the 1980s, the whisky industry primarily used transport casks, relatively new casks that were filled with sherry and shipped to the UK. The motion of the ship made them soak up a good deal of sherry. Once in Scotland, it was cheaper to sell them to the Scots than to take empty casks back to Spain.
Remember that old gag of putting shoe polish on something like binoculars to give the person a black ring? Rex's facial hair looks like he put his face in a jar that was shoe polished.
Thanks for reviewing something that MBs can get their hands on @rex - there are definite fig notes in there; since I have a bottle, I'd say more along the lines of baked fig than raw or ripe fig
I met someone once who had a "stunt liver," a friend who would drink all the alcohol that the person couldn't (can't remember off the top of my head why they didn't drink, but it was something health-related and they missed alcohol a lot).
Daniel "They tell us what's in the bottle." Rattles list including sherry. Also Daniel "I don't know if there's sherry in there." The Mooch takes the point this round.
As a self proclaimed alternate on the US Power Drinking Team, I offer my services as Official Booze Hound for the Whiskey Vault. Just doing my part and taking one for the team, MBs. I’m doing it for y’all.
Can I make a list suggestion for the other channel.. The whiskeys if see them on a bar/restaurants list you should try them. Just for things like this next year where it is harder to get whiskeys. To the other MBs, would it be better if they did one for each major category?
@@karl_alan nope, or at least not that I know of. But Rex and Daniel said a couple of vault videos ago, that just about everything that is left of the donated whiskeys for review are hard or impossible to get bottles.
I think it's pretty well known that Macallan seasons their barrels with sherry rather than using actual ex sherry barrels, which means just because it's a bunch of American oak doesn't mean they didn't season it. Drinking this alongside the episode and I'm definitely on Rex's side. There's a lot of sherry influence in here. I get a vague impression similar to almond, and the sweetness is more honey, but there's definitely a lot of fig and dark fruits.
Good review guys. I would like to offer my services as stand in booze hound, OK I live in the UK but I'm willing to relocate for this position. Will work for food.
I enjoy what you both do. You both know how to market yourselves and make content that is appealing to watch by others. I am however disappointed in How Daniel often comes after someone who doesn't smell/taste the same things he does; and plays it as they're wrong.. Guys, taste is subjective. We're all going to taste and smell things others can't. There's no wrong answer when it comes to tasting notes.

It is strange to hear the mooch try to override the som. It is also interesting how arbitrary the senses can be in some cases. Of the videos I have seen this is the most that you guys have disagreed and I like it. I like it not because of contention but because it revises some of my early impressions on reviewer‘s that confirm each other instead of standing their ground. It feels more honest.
Macallan is no longer maturing in Sherry cask they are infusing the Sherry cask flavor and since they started doing that the flavor is artificial not as good as before
Along with rare whiskey friday, you should do a common whiskey Monday where you review whiskies available everywhere. i.e. makers, jim beam, Jack Daniel's, etc.
