    After I heard that it has similarities with the black swordsman arc from Berserk makes me feel obligated to check it out over the weekend. It really does feel like wasted potential because so much about this feels very unique compared to other stuff out there.

    I’m just wondering how race was explored and Throughout the story. It’s strange for me to hear the concept of the KKK being demons win the thing that’s honestly so scary about the mess that they’re just other people like us but aside for no reason other than the color of our skin that we’re less than human and that it’s OK to commit these monstrosities. Making them literal demons is an interesting choice to say the least. I’ve always noticed the mistreatment of black characters when it came to manga and anime how there would be racist depiction or when they were depicted that they would be illustrated disrespectful manner and if not they would only be the side characters. So I do congratulate the story on having a black man lead without representing him disrespectfully or seeming like a ploy for exploitation. At the end of the day Japanese and black
    People are both people of color who have to deal with similar racial issues regardless of the historical differences and it should only makes sense that as minorities we should stick together more. The store had such a potential to educate so many people on racial issues and explore them in an intriguing way in the universe that it sets up while also being an action packed series with good writing.
    It’s really interesting how it’s taken place in Mississippi as well which is actually where I live it it has a deep-seated history of really bad racism and some of it still left over from the past. The Deep South.

    • @bartholomew7852

      I would be hesitant to prescribe the experience of racialization to Japanese people who live in Japan. As far as I’m aware they are not oppressed by other races in their own country.
      Those who live abroad, or 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc generation Japanese folks definitely would share racial experiences with Black people, but not Japan-dwelling Mangakas like the one who wrote this manga.
      Also, I don’t mean to be an ass just shutting down your points, but Japanese people do not have common historical backgrounds with Black people. Japanese imperialism was nasty stuff, just like British and American Imperialism is to this day. The shit they did to China and parts of South Asia is horrific especially in WW2. They have never been colonized or enslaved, although they have enslaved other races. They have been a global economic superpower in recent history as well. Overall my point is, the Japanese do not have much in common with Black people beyond their racial discrimination in countries like the US, Canada, the UK, etc.

    • @GD30.06

      Well japan isn't innocent of any past or current transgressions. They discriminate against Koreans even till this day. Even their policies are very strict towards people looking to migrat. And also they still haven't done a good job on paying past sins towards comfort women since it's colonial days.

    It's pronounced Cestus, it's even written as such in Katakana. U is written as V in Latin.
    Blaster Knuckle started publishing in 92, so roughly 3 years after Berserk. It is rather common for authors to be "inspired" by each others works, especially if they are friends. Ultimately Miura didn't invent anything, Guts can be said to be inspired by Evil dead, so a character losing an arm and having it replaced by a cannon or something else isn't entirely new. Nothing exists in a vacuum.
    You know what great seinen no one talks about? Sanctuary by Buronson, the same guy who wrote Japan with Miura.

      If it had all contemporary pop news figures in it and sacrificed good story telling for surface level virtue and hamfisted social politics of the author then....yeah they would have every right to complain. Almost like the story can just be good and the author should just present his story without lecturing the fanbase

    1:00 "problematic storytelling method"
    I failed to see how the possessed horse scene is in anyway problematic.
    Are you implying Miura has failed morally in someway of depicting sexual violence?
    It is merely like other form of violence in a dark fantasy story. Current social media feminism have highten people's uncomfortablness around such topic, that doesn't make it problematic.
    If it is, The instant Guts kill a person already makes it problematic.
    For it makes no sense for us to spare sword killing scene but not raping scene.

    • @earlyman7439
      @earlyman7439 2 роки тому

      How do you morally fail? What moral standards are you beholden to as a mangaka?
      Maybe he meant that was too far for him personally. I don't think that we should shield people from content we otherwise enjoy but some subject matter can be difficult to some people because of circumstance. I feel like people are feeding way too much into the twitter hate.

    • @williampan29
      @williampan29 2 роки тому

      @@earlyman7439 if it is too far for him "personally", he wouldn't use the word "problematic", because the word in modern social media usage implies a belief or depiction that is out of fashion and morally incorrect in modern times that everyone accepts (e.g. blackface in Hollywood movies).

    • @earlyman7439
      @earlyman7439 2 роки тому

      @@williampan29 There will naturally people who agree with him since before any social media. There is no specific context for which a woman being SA-ed by a possessed horse won't be distasteful for some. It's fine if you don't enjoy as long as you aren't maligning anyone for doing so and I don't really think he doing that either. Your beef seems to be with the word itself, when the word has kind of been absorbed into the vernacular to stand in for "content warning". It's like those people who think saying "based" is a racism dogwhistle or W/E when in reality it's just the normal thing that happens to common speech: specific jargon being commuted in meaning for everyday use. South Park has a pretty good episode about this with the f-word.

    • @wiiqii6346
      @wiiqii6346 2 роки тому

      I think the "problematic storytelling method" is the fact there is serial violence to begin with. Things like serial assault and rape are very looked down upon (for good reason) almost everywhere. So it makes sense how people wince and see it as problematic in fictional media as well. Ofc I thing his writing is a well and dandy but still some people just hate sexual violence in general, and in berserks defense what did ppl expect while reading it.

    • @bartholomew7852
      @bartholomew7852 2 роки тому +1

      I see it as problematic because its reckless use cheapens the seriousness of rape and it’s profound impact on the victim.
      I believe Miura did a very good job with his portrayal rape and it’s consequences with Guts and how his victimization traumatized him and shaped his relationships, but leaning too heavily on something that is so horrible can cheapen it and thus it is problematic in the case of the rape horse.
      Also, this mf really tried to blame “current social media feminism” for making people uncomfortable with rape. I really don’t think it did any more so than people already were uncomfortable with it, and if it did that’s good, these things should be taken seriously and people are more likely to do so if they’re uncomfortable with it.

  • @BenersantheBread
    @BenersantheBread Рік тому

    I'm sorry but if you came out of Black Swordsman without realising Guts' angst is a coping mechanism... I don't even know what to say to that to be honest. Like, the very examples you show are immediately followed up by obvious displays that it's an act like saving the girl he told to kill herself

  • @arttismo7002
    @arttismo7002 2 роки тому

    I disagree that this is a novelty manga, even though this is the first time I've been exposed to this. Novelty Manga runoff one concept and have a sense of distance from the mangaka. By just looking at the panels, the care is there, the mangaka has empathy for the characters in their depiction, showing their vunerability authentically. It reminds of what I've read of Hakuto no Ken. Even though it's only modes are staunch and melodramatic, with "the strong rule" stuff reaching insanity at some points, we get a sense of Ken's weighing grief, Raoh's tough exterior breaking as he shows his love for Toki. The mangaka's had good understanding of these characters. Compare it to Baki, where the hyper-masculinity is the totality of the story making it so disconnected from reality that moments of vunerability come across as flat, only in service of Itagaki's doctrine. This is what make's Baki special, but it shows the character's are ultimatly just vessels for Itagaki, even Biscut Oliva.
