I don't know how the idea of selling paint is compatible with letting the players customize the paint for free if they want to... I would like to have the optimism that they are going to just let the players have the paints achievable through playing the game but I doubt that they are going to...
They make a specific point about being able to earn every cosmetic ingame. If they wanted they could just convert the paints into color pallettes the way warframe works. I don't think they'll do this because they put a lot of effort into making sure the paints are exactly what they want to put out.
SWTOR and ESO both have some version where there's a bunch of colours/colour combinations are available to everyone, some must be unlocked, some are rewards, and so on. It's not a free-form colour customisation.
Go the warframe route, let players make their own liveries and sell it through ingame store, game devs/mods/community approve submitted liveries so no dicks and swastickas etc, liveries can be sold for both cash and credits, CIG take a percentage of cash payments. Colors, textures, patterns, decals etc can be unlocked through rep, missions, exploration etc.
Hey @TheSpaceCoder! Always appreciate the content! In regards to ship paints, couldn't CIG do the following?: Allow for all paints to be either bought or purchased in-game via a custom paint scheme maker, even to include the existing paints? I'll explain.. The paint customizer would allow for a myriad of paint schemes to be player created, of which each would have a price tag. Since only about 600 paints are already existing in-game, just have a developer go through the existing paints to ensure that the paint scheme customizer can make an exact match for the existing paints already purchased. This process shouldn't take too long. Once a paint scheme has been produced, the player is given a cost. For the existing paints, just make sure that the cost is either equal or greater than what has already been paid for with real money. Once a paint is created, a hash check is made to see if the combo exists and if it doesn't, add it to the store for other players to buy. If you want a paint to be more exclusive, just increase the elements of the paint map used and have certain colors cost more. Logos and lettering would also increase the cost. Anyways, just an idea.. 🤷🏻♂️
There are so many things they could create for ship customization. Not just paints... They could create: med beds that could replace a logout bed or take up two cargo grids. Weapon racks that can be placed on a wall. Landing lights around your ship. Small gun turret like inside the Valkyrie next to the doors. So many more ideas, that they could put in the pledge store.
@@TheSpaceCoder One of the things I've brought up a time or two. If CIG went with fewer hulls and more "modules" and customizations we'd have a lot more interesting ships. Sell a S1 2 3 medical module for ships, prison cells, cargo modules, etc... Weapon racks, armor racks, all the above. Sell that rather than all these single use ships. Then you could find a hull you love and build it out, so it's your vessel.
FINALLY, someone recognises the issue. I've been a backer since 2016, and I do recall the devs talking multiple times about painting ships and needing to develop the system for it... we have the system and they have gone radio silent on ship painting. But one look at the store just shows why. they have screwed over the players with this and no one talks about it. CIG turned into a scummy company. It was one thing to pledge for ships to help support the game, ships we thought we'd be able to customise. Instead I am stuck with $4k of ships and have to several hundred more dollars for skins.
Meh, in the end the person could melt the paints they bought in game and use it for a new ship. But for the most part I am lazy and having it already painted works for me
I spend $ on paints as I love customizing everything, even on paints available IG so I don't have to spend credits and go around the 'verse to find them (and I can directly apply them in PTU or after a major wipe). Same reason why I spent $2K+ on ships. I would love a complete paints & patterns cuztomization IG, and I wouldn't mind that it's available to everyone. Special patterns and paints unlocked on REP would make sense (UEE, gangs, guilds, ... markings and colors), as well as specific ones purchasable on the pledge store. Everything is supposed to be crafted IG at one point anyway.
Do what Digital Extreme's does with warframe, Have color pallets that are earnable / purchasable. Store / Player made "skins" that use different matterials in different area's. then able to customize that with the color pallets. The player made stuff is ranked by player votes in the community, Then DE takes their pick of which ones they give the OK to, then those are released for 10 bucks or so on the in game store. CIG makes money, and Players get stuff they want, Win Win. As for customization i would like to see deeper ship customization, I myself and im sure others would like to have a deeper personalization to ships, Like how the Millenium Falcon was modifiable, able to change its nose component out for more cargo room. Or have a circular interior for the MSR, that you could mix and match internal layouts too, Ditch the lounge and put in expanded cargo, ditch the server rack and put in a second power generator. Instead of everything being so cookie cutter. Swap out the default back of the Cutty black, and install 2 more rotating rear engines with a tractor beam. Sure there are ships that are more designed for these rolls, and thats what makes those ships better at them, But it'd still be nice. Or like ditch the 3 cargo pods on the carrack and move to just 1 large vehicle bay with a smaller in total cargo grid
Create customisation tokens that are spent when customising elements of armour/vehicles/ships. Armour in one custom colour with no patters needs one token. A large ship with primary and complementary paints with hazard patterns and org decals might cost 30 tokens for example. Current paints can be returned for store credit. Players can buy customisation tokens with store credit or new money. Certain patterns and decals could be earned in game.
I like this as well. Could prove complicated using the melt system to melt paints and get tokens. And then how you set the token costs. But it would be very flexible. You get a cookie 🍪
They should A: Do a poll to see who wants free form or paints. Now assuming free form wins, what they could do is several months before make an announcement on the RSI site, the Launcher, and the game menu. A Count down is included on every announcement. Announcement goes something like this. WARNING!! Paints are being taken out of the game in favor of free form customization colors. Please liquidate your paints and use the credits how you see fit. If you do not remove and melt them, they will disappear. As the announcement is made, take down the paint section of the store. With the announcement being made a month or two or even three months ahead, there will be a smaller amount of people who will complain. They were given plenty of time to follow through.
At the end of the day, I'm pretty sure people want to customize their ships to their own preferences. Also, arguably CiG has some pretty sh*t skin designers if we're all being honest here.... That said, we've got two choices that I see here. #1: Continue selling skins, but change the name to color pattern or something, and allow the purchased color to fit on any ship in your fleet.. If you already own any, it gets applied to your saved patterns. You win, they win and keeo selling patterns. #2: Remove all paints from the store page. Anyone who owns a skin can keep that skin but from here out, they're in game purchases. In the off chance that you feel some way about players being able to simulate the skin you paid $17 for, you'll get a lifetime ticket to rest your soul... This lifetime ticket can do one of or all of the following. *Lifetime ship washes. A clean ship can get you further than the gas tank built in it.. Especially if you're into passenger transport, VIP transport, or luxury cruises. *Lifetime discounted repairs/rearms... Just spitballing, but maybe say... a 15% discount everytime you go to the shop. Nuff said on that. This can obviously be changed but I think it proves all hope is not lost in the stupid hole they've dug themselves into...Even this far down.... They yet can fix it, question is though.... Do they want to fix it...
@the_babbleboom you know what's even funnier? I'd rather be the guy who's here and at least HOPES CiG gives a shit, than the guy who's here and 100% feels CiG doesn't give a shit..... It might take a bit to sink in but, I'd hate to be "that guy"... He's not happy at all and yet, he keeps coming back... Cold world. 😔
CIG can sell real skins with surface textures and allow coloring with "color codes" for all skins. Selling color codes is a joke. You can melt skins, so this really shouldn't be a problem for skin owners.

I was just thinking about this yesterday 👍🏻

I've wanted to paint all of my ships the same colors and similar pattern, also place the ships name on it, but alas that's unlikely to happen. ;-)
I'd be happy to be able to custom colour my paint skins with paid palettes, and some free basic ones

Could be interesting. Technically you can add seats to any cargo grid now so I hope they will add other things as well. Deployable cover would be cool

Allow us to craft them - they are a physical item in game atm.. This would also create a new market for play owned shops.
Make a paid ($5) checkbox to unlock a locked page that you can use to make your skin.
One for the algorithm
🎉
The worst part is they straight up said they were going to allow us to do this, and they even said it was super easy. So here's to two more lies.

niiice , o7
Bump
the current paint selections are pretty blah for most ships - all they need to do is make basic colors then some fancy designs/graffiti
You mean like the dying star paints?
