    So funny… a person in my gym knows I’m learning Portuguese, so everyday Rita greets me with a different greeting every morning lol

    I have an elderly lady who is Portuguese. We live across the hall from each other. She is hard of hearing which presents its own issues. I'm glad I found your site because in conversation she mentioned that our other neighbors pronounce her name, Adeline, with an English accent. She doesn't correct them. I thought to myself it would be nice if I learned how to pronounce her name correctly. Your site seems to be exactly what I need to be able to greet her properly and maybe even have small talk while passing each other in the halls. I'm surprised at how excited I am at the possibility to be able to do this.

    Obrigada for all the vids , I'm practicing for my eventual move to Lisboa,and I practice these greetings with random gym buddies that are Portuguese speakers from Brazil, Ghana and Portugal. They get excited for me then they go on a flurry of speaking, reminding me I'm not done practicing lol. Thx again

    Choir members are my usual greetings, but the younger ones mostly speak English, and the older ones who don't are *so* proud of their ability to greet me in English, I often forget to greet them in Portuguese.

    I've been using "Ora viva!" since the day I heard it on the radio 😅
    One doubt I have though is how to say "goodbye" when, say, I leave a shop or an office. Because "tchau" is prob too informal, and I can't use "até ..." since I might not see them again. What do you say Liz?

    • @TalktheStreets
      @TalktheStreets  2 роки тому +4

      You can still say até logo or até à próxima it doesn’t matter if you might not see them again! I say tchau tchau or tchauzinho to make it cuter!

    I think it should be taught that the pronounciation depends on what part of Brazil you are in. Here in Rio, it sounds a little different then what is taught in this video. Same when speaking English in different parts of the United States.

    I live in a nursing home and we have a new resident whose daughters have flown around the world to australia and dropped her into a nursing home she has very little English and the staff are struggle with translator apps on their phones which don’t seem to be able to keep up and translate her questions in real time it appears she thinks she is in a hospital but knows she is not sick so kind of wonders why she is here I feel really bad for her it’s my worst nightmare so I at least try and greet her when I see her in the dinning room withe appropriate time of day she helps correct my accent

    I speak schoolboy French. If I accidentally pronounce "Bonjour", for example, convincingly, the risk is that a French person will assume that I speak fluent French and speak back to me in a manner which I won't understand. So I deliberately exaggerate my English accent to encourage them to speak slowly. The same applies in Portuguese, presumably.

    • @glynner49
      @glynner49 2 роки тому +1

      Thank heavens someones on the same page as I am! I like to be able to pronounce the words properly so as I am understood, but I am such a beginner that I want my audience to know I am not fluent and hence they will reply in a slow and deliberate way so as I can understand. I fully get Liz's take of not sounding like a beginner but that's exactly what I want (and need). I'm more about making the effort in another country rather than ever thinking I will become fluent. All said and done, I come from Merseyside and so English is a second language to me.
