Realise some comments are a year old but you’ve just helped me so much to fix a cold water tap with your step by step method of re threading - thank you
Google sent me here (and to a few of your other videos) after I woke up this morning to no hot water coming out of my kitchen sink faucet. It's one of those mixer types. After ruling out an air block (I have hot water everywhere else in the house), I was trying to figure out what else it could be. I figured I'd drop this here in case anyone else winds up here and needs more ideas. In my case it was a blockage in the faucet itself. I took a screwdriver and whacked the base of the faucet with the handle several times and suddenly had a small trickle of water. Continued whacking it until the flow returned to normal. Whatever was clogging it up, it's gone now. Percussive maintenance saves the day again!
Thank you so much for this video, I just helped my friend sort out a problem using this technique! It was an airlock issue and I did exactly what you said with the hand covering the tap etc and like magic i couldn't believe it myself! Basically, if you ever experience an issue where cold water is running from one tap and hot water not coming out of the other tap this is the way!! It unlock all the airlock in the bathroom, bathroom sink once i did it with the kitchen tap. Thank you once again...by the way the problem my friend was having had to have her call out Southern Water (on the advice of the plumber that caused the airlock) and even the initial plumber that caused the issue didn't even know it was an airlock issue. I searched UA-cam and came up on your video and thought, hang on this is exactly what the problem is, i popped round and did this, it litreally took 30 secs!
Love your vids. Another simple thing to check I’ve found (usually in hard water areas) is the aerators. Over time these fill with scale and reduce or even stop the flow. Sometimes even on a newly fitted tap when a plumber has used paste on joints and used too much this has worked it’s way into the tap and aerator, or put a new valve in as the cheap slotted valves invariably fail. Same issue with dripping quarter turn taps, scale in the component. Love how informative your vids are, thank you
Top video in times of desperation. 4 am I wanted to have a shower and go to work, the hot water tap and the kitchen taps not working 😣. Watched this video and matter is resolved. Thank you mate.

Many thanks for your great video, managed to sort my cold water tap, just a trickle when turned on. Your step by step instructions are clear, not rushed, and the zoom in close ups very helpful. I had to go back to your video to check one or two things again. My main problem was getting the small screw out first, and didn't realize there was so much 'crud' in the body of the tap, this was a mixer kitchen tap bought just two and a half years ago, Thanks again, Andrew
Thank you Sir. We had an issue whent he cold tap started to lose flow and eventually gave up after around 4-5 months of this happening, then after that a few more months dow the lice the hot tap gave up. I went out and bought new washers and after 3 weeks of battling wit getting the inner part out the tap (finally gave in and bought some proper spanners) as they were pretty old and stubborn. I WD40'd them and a few hours later now joy. Found another video of a chap using a toilet roll to wrap around the tap and using two spanners...finally managed to get the inner valve out. On inspection of the washers they actually were in good shape so was now puzzled... Saw this video on the idea that the inner vale mechanism had move and was not tight and hey presto, both taps now have normal flow again! Thank you for the advice on the idea of the valve loosening in the tap itself and effecting the water flow. Happy noob plumber! :)
Excellent video, you just helped me out, I had no cold water to the bath, I've got a tank in the loft, I tried all sorts before searching this video. I tried the trick of putting my thumb over the mixer tap outlet and turning both taps on done that for about 5 seconds and after a couple of seconds of spluttering it was perfect again. Thanks a lot👍

Thanks for your videos, it has helped me a great deal. I have a question....The inside of my kitchen tap, if you put your finger inside, you can feel a metal bit. It feels like a metal straw (but I know it's not a straw). I want to replace the Aerator but cannot because all Aerators now have a rounded top that goes inside the tap and I can't get it to thread properly because the metal straw type thing prevents me. I am not sure what that is. It does wiggle when I push it to the right and left, but I don't want take a chance and pull it out. Any ideas? Thanks
Can i just add in one little thing, i had problems with a new fancy kitchen tap my wife wanted. It started to slow down after a while and then just trickle, turned out to be the cheap flexi hose that was rusting in the inside.
Forcing the cold (mixer tap) water up the hot tap, to remove an airlock, can be difficult. I have to use a rubber glove, which swells like a balloon or cow's udder before it does the trick. If I don't hold it tight enough, a Laurel & Hardy/Norman Wisdom situation arises, with me getting soaked. The tap is an odd shape, and the opening is not easily covered, with a thumb, etc. I also tend to use black heavy duty rubber gloves, rather than the ordinary yellow ones, as I fear that the thing will explode. The airlocks do seem to happen after running a bath, washing the dishes, etc. I shall try the ruse of running the hot first and then starting the cold. This started after the plumber came to fix an external overflow pipe which was constantly dripping. He went into the loft and "did something" with the water tank.

I have an airlock on the cold feed which has a pump. Always happens when my grandkids have a shower for too long and drain the tank. Both sink and bath are waterfall taps so very difficult to do the finger block the water. Any suggestions? Can't get anybody out for two weeks!!
Cut a 15 mm drain valve into the cold feed pipe to the basin tap pipework. Then connect a hose form your outside tap up onto the drain valve, secure with a jubilee clip, open the drain valve then get someone to open the garden tap and mains pressure will be pushed up the pipework clearing the airlock.

If all hot water taps run hot, cold, hot, cold and you have a combi. Go and look at the combi ignition indicator whilst a hot outlet is running. If it's firing up, off, on, off. Blocked plate heat exchanger. They're not cheap but they can be resurrected with VERY strong acid and 4 new o rings. You'll have to get a GasSafe reg'd engineer to do this work. Oh, and get a magnetic filter fitted after having your heating system cleaned out. That is, if it is the plate heat exchanger at fault. That's no1 guess. Good luck!
PS. Forgot to mention. May not be just sludge. Might be scale. That's if you are in a hard water area. Combi's can be very temperamental, like petulant children.
@@loafersheffield Thanks very much for your help it's much appreciated mate! Yes I just checked what you said to look out for and it does look like the heat exchanger, is there no way I can replace or clean it out myself instead of calling a engineer?
@@bigt8699 You're welcome... However! Strictly speaking you shouldn't be even taking the cover off. Search: Blocked plate heat exchanger. There's loads of stuff on youtube. If you are absolutely certain that this is the definite fault, you could purchase the part yourself. Not cheap! The acid trick is not for the faint hearted but a cheaper alternative. Either way, gas, lecky and water don't mix and acid WILL cause serious damage to your eyes/skin as well as clearing haematite and scale. I know it's freezing and the lurgy means engineers are like rocking horse sh**, but more often than not £10-12 for a bottle of one shot and 4 new o rings is cheaper than a replacement part and it USUALLY does the trick. If the boiler has been serviced annually within the time span of the warrantee period you should still be able to get an engineer out within 48 hours. Again. I cannot emphasise this strongly enough. If you could not diagnose the fault, you are not a plumber/gas/electrical engineer; I'd wrap up real warm, put the kettle on fer hot water and wait. Again, the acid does USUALLY work but if it's under warrantee and has been serviced annually, an engineer will probably just whap a replacement plate to plate in. Q is Why was it blocked int 1st place? Sludge, scale, lack of corrosion inhibitor, poor installation, no scale/sludge filter fitted??? If the answer is yes, yes, yes... I wouldn't get the bloe back who installed it to do the fix coz it aint been done reyt int 1st place! Good luck M8!

It only allows you to turn it on a bit, then it feels like its jammed. All other hot water taps in the house work fine. Cold water is fine too. What could it be? Thank you
The tap is faulty. The left hand thread inside has become loose and is restricting the amount of turns that you can turn the tap. I have a video called, no water from tap, that explains how to fix it.

The pipe feeding the tap could be frozen, but as it has warmed up now, if it is still not working, then you have a faulty tap.
@@dereton33 thanks for reply, it’s a mixer tap.
The cold water is coming out.
Cheers mate 😃👍
No problem.
Hello! I have no water in the actually hot pipe, its a new combi boiler but the hot pipe is practally dry!! how do i get it to flow? Or register at the boiler that a tap is on?? Thanks in advance!
Check the boiler pressure is up at one and a half bars.
@@dereton33thanks for the reply. i can, but it doesnt do anything :(. is the hot line meant to be preasurised from a comi? i can take off the hot tap entirley and there is no pressure at all like the boiler isnt registering it. there is only 2 hot taps atm, and not lots of metres of pipe.
its like the boiler cant register the hot tap being turned on in order to pump?.. i cant get the boiler to say "hey the pipe is on, push!"??
Cheers! 👍👍👍
Thanks for the visit
Thanks 🙏
