Ugh, this movie. One of the biggest issues it has is that Richard Pryor was just flat out not funny in this at all, and apparently the writers thought he would adlib and make their terrible script actually funny when sadly he stuck to the script for some reason. Literally the only borderline redeeming factor of this movie is Evil Superman vs Clark Kent in the junkyard. That was great and was even referenced in the Crisis on Infinite Earths Arrowverse crossover. You have to do Superman IV even if it's bad only because it's the last Reeve film.
Originally Richard Pryor wasn't even going to be in Superman 3 at all...the early drafts were to have Brainiac, Mister Mxyzptlk and even Supergirl (however Supergirl would later get her own movie in 1984 that Christopher Reeve was supposed to cameo in but he backed out at the last minute - good idea). When Warner Brothers rejected all previous drafts for 3, as being either too expensive and/or too confusing, the Salkinds (Superman movies producers) decided to lean more into comedy...and since Richard Pryor was a huge comedic legend at the time & was a big Superman fan himself (even re-enacted the entire Superman 1 & 2 plots on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson), they tailor made the character of Gus Gorman for Pryor.
Hey Patrick. 100% agree with you. This was my favorite as a kid too. I know it isn’t the best, yes 1 and 2 were epic but this one left a lasting impression on me. The junkyard fight was an amazing piece of cinema. Reeve’s portrayal of the evil Superman was spectacular. I remember being terrified of Webster’s sister when she turned into a robot. Scared the hell outta me.
Great reactions there...Superman III is a guilty pleasure of mine & I actually always enjoy watching the movie....One other thing about Superman III that often gets overlooked is the soundtrack by Ken Thorne (who had a tough job balancing John Williams previous music cues along with completely new orginal music that Ken composed himself to make it all sound seamlessly blended together. No easy feat to do and showcases that Ken really is very good composer in his own right). If you ever get a chance to listen to the isolated music score for Superman III, it really is very good & memorable. 🎶🎧 Additional Fun Fact - When Superman III was shown on TV 📺 it had a lot of extened/deleted scenes added back in (some were just nonsensical with bad comedy and/or filler moments to make a scene longer but there were some gems that were sadly cut that I wish they kept in the theaterical version as well as other nice character moments, however when some scenes were cut for the theatrical version, they did create some unintended minor plot holes...I'm looking at you 'philly flash'...most of those extended/deleted scenes and be now seen on the special edition DVD/Blu-Ray of Superman III and even on UA-cam as well - although the quality may vary on UA-cam).
Reeve was his best looking in this movie, but this one suffered with Donner & Mankiewicz already departed from the franchise. No real connection & reverence to the comics beyond Clark's relationship with Lana Lang. Instead of Bizarro & Brainiac, Superman fights a super computer. And realistically, Gus Gorman is the protagonist, not Superman. But Reeve did act his behind off! He played nerdy Clark, a more genuine Clark around Lana, Superman & Evil Superman. All convincingly. I also loved how the fire chief is so about business that when he realizes Superman has arrived to help, he just says "Oh, it's you. Forget the helmet!" & goes on about trying to fight the fire. This movie feels very 80s, for better or worse.
Nick. This is perhaps the best explanation I have heard about Superman 3. It really hasn’t stood the test of time. But I am with you 💯 Reeves acted phenomenally in this film. Loved him.
Never realised Superman 3 was not well received when I watched it as a little kid. But I always liked Superman 3, dark superman is just absolutely amazing, and it has the best love interest out of all the Reeve Superman movies, all the scenes that involves Annette O’toole’s Lana Lang and Clark Kent is just simply adorable

28:45 You're saying if the junk yard workers had stayed there instead of legging it, they'd have seen a scene similar to the one in Liar, Liar, where Jim Carey beats the shit out of himself?
Kirk Alyn played Superman in the 1948 serial (15 episodes) and two years later in Atom Man vs Superman (part of the basis for Superman IV). His Lois Lane was Noel Niell who replaced Phyllis Coates as Lois in the George Reeves TV show after the first season..
You mentioned something about this movie that I have to clarify. You have the Special Edition as it were of the movie. (Like the Star Wars trilogy, you can't get the original version anymore) The "sound things" are an addition. Another edition is Webster saying to Gus "You've been a naughty guy" Originally, it was "naughty boy", but it was thought that it might be seen as racist for the White man in the scene to call a Black man "boy" (even though I am sure that that wasn't the intention)). There are a few more changes, but most are very subtle
@@PatrickStewart316 You should see Superman IV with the deleted scenes put back in. It makes it more bearable. Oh, and here is a memory-the scene where Vera is robotised scared me as a kid!
It is a synthetic Kryptonite mixed tar....now originally (according to producer Ilya Salkind) they were going to make it red Kryptonite but the studio heads at Warner Brothers nixed that and said "Kryptonite has to be green because you might confuse the audience" (a bad case of a big movie studio underestimating its audiences) 🤦🤦🤦
I've forgotten how cheesy this movie was and haven't seen this movie in years. If I still remember, I think I watched Christopher Reeve's Superman when I was still in Primary School around 2010 or so and at that time I think they were great but now I think the last two were a bit yeah.... anyways I still enjoyed them. Not sure if u are into video games but just a few days ago a tv series called The Last of Us dropped on HBO. The Last of Us is a video game series that follows these two characters, Joel a smuggler and Ellie a girl who has a huge role to play in this post-apocalyptic world, infected with zombie-like creatures and people who may be friend or foe, travelling across the US to deliver her to a facility where the last hope for humanity may be found. Basically it's like The Walking Dead but better. It has a more emotional and gut-wrenching story and the outbreak is caused by a real life fungi called Cordyceps which infects ants causing them to be mind controlled by the fungus while it grows and spreads in its internal organs until it kills the victim and disperses its spores to infect other ants. But now this fungus has found its way into humans and those who got infected their bodies mutate into quite horrifying looking creatures that look almost nothing like humans. Hopefully u could react to this show and a lot of people are saying positive things about it even though its only the first episode. The Last of Us is one of my favourite video game series and HBO does not disappoint, in my opinion anyway. Even people who have never played the game are enjoying the show and I'm sure you'll enjoy it if u give it a chance. Just to tell u that two GOT alumni actors are playing the two main characters of the show, Pedro Pascal as Joel and Bella Ramsey as Ellie.
The previews look phenomenal, but I can’t compare it anything else. I’ve never seen an episode of Game of Thrones. But this last of us show looks pretty darn cool. Except for the zombies. 😱😱
@PatrickStewart316 the reason why the zombies look the way they are is because of the different stages of the infection over the years. The first stage they still look like humans but as the fungus spreads and continues to infect the rest of the body they become less and less ressemble of humans.
I saw all the Superman movies except the first one (I was slightly too young-being only 3) in the movies. Unlike many, I really enjoyed this one back in the day. I had no knowledge of Richard Pryor back then, but I liked the idea of an evil Supes, and I liked Lana Lang and the story of going back to Smallville
Superman Returns doesn't fit in ANYWHERE in this timeline because it contradicts every possibility. It contradicts 3 because it's revealed at the school reunion that Clark's mother has died, but in Returns she's alive and well. It contradicts the Donner Cut of 2 because Superman destroys the Fortress of Solitude in that, but in Returns it's still there. Finally, it contradicts the theatrical repease of 2, because in that Clark and Lois only have sex once Clark becomes human, so he couldn't pass on Kryptonian powers to his and Lois's son, which he has done in Returns. Returns is a fucking continuity mess.
