Yeah this one is just a fun movie to enjoy. The next movie for me is like chewing cardboard. However, patiently waiting for VI. Missed you guys, been too long.
Yes. Way too long. Between work and some serious health emergencies we have had a month of craziness. Thankfully I have several on backlog. John is loving the Star Trek #5 Chewing on cardboard. That’s about sums it up!!!! 🤣🤣
This movie has a special place for me because I was born and raised in the Bay Area. I remember everyone laughing out loud when Uhura and Chekov were trying to figure out how to get to Alameda NAS from The City.
I keep reminding John that every time you see them talking to someone “on screen” that technology used to not exist. Communicators, handheld computers, transparent aluminum, commercial space craft, drones, etc. with the exception of light speed and transporters Star Trek has all dang near come true.
@@PatrickStewart316 There's an actual documentary about fans of Star Trek and Star Wars that became scientists, engineers, designers, etc. and invented the tech and science we enjoy today because they were inspired by these two (and other sci-fi) movies. Maybe it's worth checking out. Btw, someone was discussing the reason we never know who the aliens are and why they were there. They said Nimoy, the other writers fought to keep it a secret because it helps us to realize we simply won't know a lot of things. Especially when the message isn't For or About us humans. It's a kinda, "Ours is not to wonder why..." sorta thing
@@LA_HA this is some awesome stuff. Especially that tid but about intentionally not knowing who the aliens were. I’ll see if I can’t find that documentary. 👍👍
"I just wanna watch a movie to be entertained, I don't want an underlying message" Well, sorry to tell ya, but underlying message is the whole POINT of Star Trek
It's my understanding the shots on the street were not staged. The lady who gave directions was just walking by and they used it. She had to sign a release.
The punk rocker was played by a producer of the movie. His name is Kirk Thatcher. There was an attempt to get a brand name song to be played in that scene, but it would have been expensive. So he just wrote one on his own, titled "I Hate You".
There are also deleted scenes for star trek ii on youtube. Extra scenes were in promo reels for press in 1982. Including longer version of scene when spock book to kirk for his birthday and talk about Saavik being half romulan. Thats why she was crying at the end at spocks funeral
Fun fact: Nimoy said he would only direct again if the movie has a positive message and no one gets killed (as the previous one was very dark and lots of killing!) so that maybe explains the full on cheese, save the whales etc.
Star Trek IV is the only Star Trek movie in which there is no main villain and no one gets killed. They have to figure their way through a situation. To this day it is still the highest grossing Star Trek movie ever.
Star Trek IV, still to this day, is the highest grossing Star Trek movie ever. The success of this movie made it possible to bankroll Star Trek the Next Generation.
Same here probably would have had bigger box office draw. They wrote star trek 5 with sean Connery in mind for sybok. He was over booked too. Indiana jones and highlander 2
Think how much better it would have been with sean Connery. Or if paramount would have nicholas meyer to cast kirstie allie in star trek vi. He wanted to revisit their love child subplot.
They didn't build a whole new ship after the Enterprise was destroyed. They renamed the last ship of that class in honor of the first Enterprise. Remember Enterprise was in the process of being decommissioned when Kirk stole it. They planned to make this new one back then.
Also Saavik, Had to stay on Vulcan. When she says goodbye and stands with Amanda. They were gonna have a scene of her talking to Amanda about what to do with the baby she was pregnant with from her son......
Always a good time when the fellas hit the couch. Hope you 3 and your families are doing well. Patrick, please tell Marianne hello. Another great reaction
I passed on your greetings. She says hi 👋. It’s about time we put her on some more Superman. She has been binge watching Mando with me. She never saw it and didn’t want to video it. So we are trying to get her to season 3.
Actually the humpbacked whale population improved greatly after this movie and they were taken off the endangered list in the 1990s. Unfortunately because of current problems with ocean warming they are once again endangered.
I thought it interesting they had Chekov with his thick "Russki" accent asking where the Nuclear Wessels were before the Cold War thawed. I've always wondered if the fim makers were also making a political reference with the choice not to have Uhura ask with her being communication specialist in multiple languages, it should have been her.
Well they mate once every 7 years and i think spock and Saavik are bonded for life. That would have made an interesting plot point for star trek 5 or 6
Good to see you too. I didn’t get out of copyright prison unscathed. WB strikes again. I had to leave King Arthur behind and content myself with Star Trek. It’s awesome to see how much John is loving these.
Guillermo deli Toro is absolutely awesome. Quantum of Solace, Hellboy!!! But I can’t give him Pacific Rim. He kind of like M Night Shamalayan for me. Some awesome movies and some duds.
Yes. Born and raised. Named after my uncle Patrick Stewart. (…not THE Patrick Stewart). Just a family name. When I was a kid, TNG came out and I was like, hey that’s my name.
I know where you are going with the time. They did not build a new enterprise, they renamed another constitution class ship enterprise. I forget the name of the ship before it was renamed enterprise, but you can research it, its common knowledge and has been since the movie became available on home video. Your thought process is so ignorant ... which was the point of the movie. Because you don't speak whale and comprehend that other life may have communication that will remain unknown to you. The probe wasn't trying to kill or destroy anything. As far as the race that sent the probe was concerned, Whales were the dominant species on Earth since no humans existed at the time they made contact and dinosaurs brains were to small. It created the premise that whale song is actually communication to other life forms we don't know exist, and when the communication stopped, a probe was sent to find out what happened to all the whales by evaporating the oceans to look for them. Did Aliens perplex you also when communication with the colony on LV426 stopped so they sent in heavily armed colonial marines to figure out why?

"As I recall, I opposed your enlistment in Starfleet. It is possible that judgement was incorrect."
About as close a Vulcan will admit to being wrong.
That scene with his father was one of my favorites. And how Kirk waits on Spock and the two fall in together after the talk. ❤️❤️❤️
Spock trying to swear was one of the best elements of this movie 🤣🤣🤣
Priceless
The hell it is! 😅

No they asked him to direct and he was reading a book about whale extinction occurring. There are interviews with Nimoy you can see.

Phenomenal film. Cast acting at their best. And so much fun
This movie almost got made with Eddie Murphy as the whale Bilologist minus the whole kirk romance subplot.
I’d pay real money for that

Mark Lenard (Sarek) was 7 years older than Leonard Nimoy (Spock). I guess Vulcans just age different... haha
Great call out. Love Mark Lenard.
The Enterprise A was the USS Yorktown, they simply renamed it.
🤔 I like it. Makes sense why it was ready
Also why would they build a 40yo design :)
They didn't build a whole new ship after the Enterprise was destroyed. They renamed the last ship of that class in honor of the first Enterprise. Remember Enterprise was in the process of being decommissioned when Kirk stole it. They planned to make this new one back then.
Gotcha. Makes a lot more sense.

The new Enterprise is just the USS Yorktown barely refurbirshed from its adventure with the alien probe.
