Thanks for the videos. I just ordered this headunit tonight for my overland Chevy Suburban build. I wanted a big screen so I can run my off-road maps like Gaia and OnX without having to run a secondary tablet for a screen. Super excited to get my unit and start playing with it. I did opt for the double din setup as that's currently what's already in the truck so it should be a quick swap! I look forward to your review of the headunit.
Shane - have you installed yours yet? Joying told me they didn't have a vehicle-specific harness for my GMT900 Yukon XL (surprising!). I'm wondering how the GPS antenna, microphone, and reverse camera get handled.
The units come with their own GPS antenna and microphone like most aftermarket head units. The OEM reverse cameras generally don't work with aftermarket head units but you may be able to find converters out there.
I received my unit and installed it a few days ago. Loving it so far! Just not sure how to change downloaded wallpapers to fit full screen size. So far it only centres it to the middle of the screen with black borders on the side. Let me know if you figure it out. Look forward to your full review.
Open your picture in the gallery or picture viewer on the radio, and take a screenshot of it on the radio using a app for taking screenshots and then go find your screenshot that's saved on the radio somewhere and you can then set it to your wallpaper full screen!
I have tried sunlight and I'm honestly floored. It's way better than my other Joying unit was in the sun: i.imgur.com/wpRScxE.jpg As for WiFi, the 2.4GHz band is about the same as last time but the 5GHz band has a significant performance bump. Also, running Bluetooth concurrently still affects the 2.4GHz band some but not the 5GHz band. In the image both head units are connected to the same router, the only difference is that the 10.1" one is locked on the 5GHz band. i.imgur.com/PcKNu1F.jpg
@@MatthewVaras cool!! I actually meant have you had a chance to watch video in the sunlight? I had a Eonon 10.1 unit and had to return it. The Wi-Fi and quality of the screen made the unit unbearable. What unit did you have before this current one?
Based on using navigation and the overall interface in direct sun I don't think that video will be an issue, but I will get some footage for my review. The WiFi is pretty good IMO, but I use my phone's hotspot in 5GHz mode so that may be a part of it. This is the unit I had before: ua-cam.com/video/eOP-XFMWaZE/v-deo.html
Please tell me how this multimedia sounds. In terms of software, it is cool, but in comparison with a regular radio tape recorder, the sound has become better or at the same level.
I have a 2020 Ford Transit. I emailed Joying and they said they do not have a plug and play harness for my vehicle. Do you think there is any way to make this head unit work with my steering wheel controls, backup camera, and microphone?
OEM microphones almost never integrate with any aftermarket head units which is why they all come with their own mic. Same for the backup camera but there may be a product out there that will convert the signal; you'd have to research. The unit does have a steering wheel control interface so you may be able to get a third party decoder.
I don't think so. You can change it by going into the factory menu (password 3368) then go to the Backlight Current Adjustment (password 5768) imgur.com/a/dfYheae There you can adjust your minimum value. Be careful though, if you drop it down too far the backlight will shut off. I found that 31 was the very minimum I could go, however this will probably vary between units. Also, when the backlight is set very close to the absolute minimum, you may notice a slight flickering on the screen. A value of 35 for me makes that go away.
@@Ghazi.D Once you change the settings for the backlight current it will change the total range of the brightness slider within Android. It's a set-it and forget-it kind of thing. If, for some reason, the current goes too low and the screen goes black, try to remember exactly where the buttons are to adjust it back up because they will still work. Otherwise, you can probably use a flashlight pointed at the screen to see what's on the LCD. I hope it helps
It depends on how your car handles SWC. If you purchase the custom vehicle harness it should just work. You may need the CAN decoder as well depending on how your car handles SWC.
The harness it comes with is an ISO harness. Joying makes direct plug-and-play harnesses for various makes/models of vehicle. You'd need to contact them to see if they make one for your specific application. Here is the included harness next to the BMW specific one they make for my car. imgur.com/a/n4XTyyS
You use the transport controls in an app. Personally I'd look at one of their other units that have buttons if you don't have steering wheel controls, or get one of their add-on steering wheel controllers.
I received my units within 7 days, however things seem to have slowed down recently. Between the chip shortages and the complete mess with USPS a part I just ordered took about three weeks to arrive, but that was mostly due to USPS losing it for a week and a half.
Very well. There was an issue with a firmware update that caused the Google account login to stop working but they were able to get that corrected for me.
Mate, mate... Really wrong approach to this project... Forget Metra and all the over the counter CRAP! What you still can do to save your project is to re-use the car's original trim for the AC controls and ONLY work above it. You can trim the frame behind the front plate to make room for the new unit and you should manufacture a slide out of aluminum from your local HD store. Drill as much as you want/need and tweak the position of the screen to the desired spot. Also, you can manufacture out of aluminum the spacers to replicate the ones you never got from the manufacturer, but you can make them custom to your needs. Next, you NEED to get rid of that terrible launcher and get something decent, like the AGAMA PRO (only $1.99). Have fun redoing the entire thing because the way the Metra mates the dash at the bottom is terrible.
I can appreciate this, but the OEM mounting is way off center and I don't want to modify that bracket because I plan on returning it back to stock for some car shows. I actually have Agama, just not installed on that unit. I'll probably switch once I'm done with my reviews, but I want the reviews to reflect what someone can expect if they buy one out of the box.
@@MatthewVaras I bought a few "out of the box" and I did it the way I explained... Whatever; you believe you did a great job... Let people (like me and others) be the judge of that. It's kind of demeaning what you say about buyers like they wouldn't be able to install a launcher. You do understand that the factory launcher is not meant to be used; it's a platform to start from... They would not offer a paid service (product) like the AGAMA because this means legal issues... Stay safe mate and trust me, the way to do this jhob CLEAN, is by keeping the original trimm.
@@A.Dude. My intent wasn't to be demeaning at all, simply to say that I was trying to show it as it comes. Based on your point though, I will add a part about aftermarket launchers to the review video so thank you for the suggestion. And to clarify, I don't think I did a great job on this, it's hacked together and I have no problem admitting that, but it's also what I have the time and resources to do at the moment.
What a valiant effort! Full marks foe the DIY.
I just bought a e90-specific unit and hoping for a real plug-and-play experience.
You're seriously a magnificent DIY Boss. Your work arounds are quick and dirty. Love it!

I've not tried changing wallpapers, but I would imagine that you can just go into a basic image editor and crop one down to 1280x800

interested in one of these... can't wait for quick review video
I'm a bit behind on it because of some personal things that take priority, but I am still working on it!
@@MatthewVaras no worries.... life is definitely priority
did you ever replaced all those washers with a (the) proper spacers? thanks!!
