    My biggest mistake so far was about 15 years ago when I opened a fuel line under my car to change the fuel filter. It was a hot summers day and I forgot to open the petrol cap to release the pressure...the petrol sprayed into my eyes and burned like hell for a couple of hours. I certainly won't make that mistake again! :)) Thanks for your informative and fun videos Scotty! All the best! Ken :-)

      I did a bonehead move while fixing my car in the Air Force. At most military bases they have a mechanic garage where you could go in and rent a bay for five bucks or so. Changing out the oil while the car was up on the lift a guy came over we started talking so without thinking I took the oil drain catch pan and then droppef the lift.
      So we kept talking, I open up the quart of oil and started pouring it in. That's when I heard the unmistakable sound of liquid hitting the garage floor. An entire quart to be exact.
      I forgot to put the screw back into the oil pan. 😁
      Boy was I embarrassed.

    Gotta disagree with ya on the battery. I worked at a battery plant for a while. We would run Wal-Mart batteries, Interstate batteries and oem. Often times the only thing that changed was the casing or stickers..... Of course gel, lithium or optima batteries are much better. But dont think brand name or apperence has any value.

    • @DDS029
      @DDS029 5 років тому +1

      The way I hear it is most batteries are made by Interstate. But they are made to spec for the different retailers they supply. So there still is a difference.

      Yeah! Just when you think you are done take it all apart again and move the gear one notch. Or cut off the steering wheel key and also move it one gear notch will work in a pinch if the steering wheel has the same amount of teeth as the pinion that is.

    • @dragonskunkstudio7582

    Me and a buddy had just put a brand new motor in a car,we basically built it from the ground up,he had gotten new heads,most heads in the back and front (the sides) have little oil plugs,these particular heads were not fitted with the little plugs from the factory,we primed the engine and started it up , everything going great, all of the sudden i look down and there is a huuuuge puddle of oil on the floor, ha ha ha ,it was his moms garage so she was pissed,once we cleaned it i had to get under and reach all the way up by the firewall and put these little plugs by feel,the clearance was tiny, just enough to bend my fingers and for a allen wrench to fit and tighten them.
    Another time we were putting headers on this car and it was being a major pain in the ass, nothing was lining up and was extremely frustrating till we realized you have to loosen everything (H pipe on back and then tighten everything gradually, once we did that it went on like a charm,one time i was replacing a power steering hose on a forklift (i know this is about cars but they are similar, in a way) where the hose disconnected was in a super hard place to deal with,after a couple of hours of frustration i realized all i had to do was move the steering wheel a bit and the cylinder the hose was attached to moved right in front of me to a very accessible place, ha ha ha, all these things are little lessons,we are always learning.

    My biggest car mistake is almost too embarrassing to think about.
    It was about 20 years ago, my first 'project car'. I had rebuilt engines before, with my brother, but this was the first time doing it myself. I bought all my own tools and everything needed to do a complete rebuild on an old 5L V8. I think I spent about $1500 on parts alone. Anyway, I took my time and got everything done without any real issues. With everything back together I tentatively hit the ignition and the thing roared to life immediately - so quickly it actually frightened me. It was a bit loud and idling a bit fast, but I expected it to take a few seconds for oil to get to the top end. Adjusting the idle on the new carb slowed things down but the noise wasn't really diminishing - that 'metal on metal' grinding noise that sends a shiver down any mechanic's spine. I stopped the motor after a few seconds and looked over everything I could see, trying to think of what 'simple' thing I must be missing to cause the noise. After a few hours with no luck, I called my brother to come over and he quickly identified the noise as being internal and stopped the motor immediately. His first question - "You did use a torque wrench on the mains, right?". "Yeah, of course. I bought a brand new one just for the job!" Showing him the new tool he then asked where I was getting the torque information from, so I showed him the workshop manual I had used. He saw the problem immediately: One was in ft-lbs, the other NM. I had over-tightened every bolt on the motor, crushing the bearings in the process. I was so disheartened I gave up on the car and gave it to him.
    Needless to say: I've been very careful with both my workshop manuals, and my tools ever since.

      I was at an oil change place and decided to sit down on the curb outside the store. I've never done that before. So as I'm sitting there they drive my car up to me and I can see very well the oil coming out of the bottom as they accelerate.
      They guy come out and I point out to him the "trail" of oil leading to my car. His eyes got wide and reversed right back to the bay!😨
      Luckily no damage. But if I had been sitting inside the waiting area then received my car and drove off......

If I broke down in an Autozone parking lot, I would WALK to a competitor for the part. I can not name one instance where I put in an Autozone part that lasted beyond a year.

    The worst mistake by far (in my life) I've ever made was after rebuilding the carb on my wife's 377 Safari, I put it back on thinking I removed the paper shop towel out of the intake to of course prevent any dirt or grim from getting in the engine. It started on the first pull but didn't sound right, like gasping for air. Then it stopped suddenly, it felt like something was obstructing free movement. I reefed on the pull cord and it started again and revved freely. I then noticed all these black, sooty fluffs of "what the hell is that!" coming from the exhaust all over the driveway. I quickly figured out the very paper towel (that may have separated) put in there to prevent anything from getting inside was inhaled by the engine.
    I still want to bang my head against the wall, while praying no permanent damage has occurred. I'll find out next winter.

    I love your videos. Thanks for doing this. I have one exception to the "cheap" battery thought... A mechanic friend told me this years ago... If you have an Interstate Battery store and warehouse in your area (not a dealer... actually owned by Interstate), they sell blems and re-manufactured batteries usually at a price 50-75% lower than the comparable new battery on the shelf. They don't display or advertise them. You have to ask for them. I've bought at least 20 of these over the past 35 years between cars, boats, lawn mowers, etc. I've only had one fail and they gave me a loaner while mine was repaired. I don't work for nor do I receive any royalties from Interstate Battery whatsoever... I just wanted to share what I think is a really good tip for saving money and still getting a really good battery.

      My car runs smooth until I reach 65mph, but vibrates through the steering wheel at 65-75mph, then is smooth again going 80mph. For the longest time that vibration range was 59-75mph...my mechanic hasn't figured out the problem

    • @jakegarrett8109
      @jakegarrett8109 6 років тому +2

      +mrbill6666 First, never go to that mechanic again. Second, that's simply your tires/wheels out of balance. Go get your tires balanced and thank me later (I would say the exact same speeds happened on my old Mercedes, but that's just coincidence). Also fun side note, if you go up to around 90-95 mph you'll probably get that same vibration again but much stronger, so I wouldn't recommend it unless you like living on the edge.

    Biggest mistake I've made was the day i decided to play 'Johnny mechanic' and change the clutch and pressure plate on an old 80's model stick shift truck I had back in the early 90's. After several hours of fighting to pull the drive shaft and drop the bell housing, I finally got everything reassembled. That took a couple more hours and some skinned knuckles. I'm alone and working in my driveway. Started the truck, stepped on the clutch pedal to test it, the pedal went all the way to the floorboard with zero resistance!! I had put the pressure plate in BACKWARDS! I went batshit crazy. 🤣 check out the 1st minute of this clip, ua-cam.com/video/dA0QhgmuvrcT/v-deo.htmlha That's pretty much what I looked like that day. 🤣 I thought the neighbors were going to call 911. So I walked away from it for about an hour to calm down, then I had to do it all over again. It was my only ride so I had no choice. I feel my pressure rising while writing this from just the memory of that day. Nowadays, i don't even change my own oil even though i know how. The moral is, if you don't know what you're doing, save yourself ( and your knuckles) the headache and hire a pro like Scotty! Trust me. 😁😁

      @thelaughingman79 5 років тому +12

      or just...carefully read the good book before hand and keep it close to see that things are going togather correctly. the moral of your story is never develop new skills?...thats not a good story man. "the pro's" want the GDP of nigeria to do anything. and over charge for parts by up to 800% plumbers and carpenters cut corners that would keep you up at night if only you knew. Noones going to care about your stuff as much as you will by far. Most of your "pro's" will just sleep walk through a job and do only as much as it takes to collect your money. My advice...do as much as you can by yourself learn with friends or family if you can. we have the youtubes these days which is a wonderful instructional tool.

    I'm with you on the propane torches for seriously stuck bolts.
    A few years ago I was removing the flex plate from a Chevy 350 and kept breaking sockets on the bolts.
    Lo and behold, those things were installed with red loctite from the factory. Red loctite only breaks down with heat.
    So here's what I did, after starting to round off the heads from using sockets and breaking them.
    Propane torch to each bolt head for about 2 minutes.
    Smack each bolt head with a heavy hammer.
    Use a "bolt out" socket over the worn bolt heads, and they came right out!
    It's all about knowing when to use that blue tipped wrench! 🔥

      Weezy Wednesday If you still learning and making mistakes don't touch my car. Until you're seasoned then I can touch it. I would never want anybody to learn from my car when I pay my hard earned money.

      Vinni Davinci That’s the thing though, a good tech will learn on every car they work on, even if they’ve done the job before. My mentor when I worked for Audi had been a tech for 32 years. When I asked him how long it had taken him to get as good at working on cars as he was he said “32 years”
      The good part about going to a good shop is that if anything gets messed up they will fix the mistake and take care of you.
      And besides. How do you expect people to learn, if you won’t let them?

    My biggest,stupid and very embarrassing mistake (actually two mistakes at same time),was using one way ratcheting wrench while I was trying to remove serpentine belt tensioner on my Toyota Corolla 2006.
    There is probably less than 3/4 inch of space between tensioner bolt and frame of the car.
    It took only a few strokes with wrench before I relized that I was stuck.I just couldn't go back because it was one way ratcheting wrench.From panic attack and temporally complete lack of common sense,I tried to use force,so I damage threads of my reliable Corolla that I love with my whole heart and obsessively take care of.
    Thank god I found the video of the guy (Thank you Simply Seth ,thank you very much),who clearly explained that you have to remove engine mount and lift engine to be able to remove that long bolt.It took me no more than 20 minutes to do that.I was able to rethread and clean threads.
    I was even able to torque bolt with a torque wrench,afterwards. (Specified torque : 51 ft-lbf or 69N-m)
    I just hope that somebody else attempting to do same job,reads this and finds helpful.
