  • (Part 1 of 2) As the U. S. Trade Representative from 2006 to 2009, the Honorable Susan C. Schwab served as President George W. Bush’s principal advisor, strategist, negotiator, and spokesperson on international trade and commerce. Upon leaving government, Schwab returned to the University of Maryland’s School of Public Policy, where she previously served as dean. Her career has spanned the public, private, and non-profit sectors, with an emphasis on U.S. trade and competitiveness. She has served as President of the University System of Maryland Foundation, Director of Corporate Business Development for Motorola, Inc., Assistant Secretary of Commerce, and head of the U.S. and Foreign Commercial Service. She is the author of Trade-Offs: Negotiating the Omnibus Trade Act, as well as numerous articles on U.S.-Japan trade relations, trade politics, and public policy education.
