The reason for the "soft reboot" is they switched production companies and didn't have the rights to the footage from the first film. So they had to reshoot the events of that one in a concise way. Essentially, Bruce Campbell has confirmed, several times, that this movie is a sequel since the first 10 minutes is a recap of the first. The movie truly begins with Ash flying through the trees following the ending of the first film where he dies, gets possesed, and resurrected from the sun. The most iconic line in a franchise full of iconic lines. "I'll swallow your soul - swallow this.", "This is my boomstick!", "Good, bad, I'm the guy with the gun.", "Name's Ash. Housewares."
The scene with the deer head where Ash goes crazy is one of the most insane things I've ever seen in a film, and I loved every second of it. After everything that's happened, I can't blame him for going nuts.
So, the Necronomicon was first mentioned by HP Lovecraft. He and Robert E Howard, creator of Conan the Barbarian, were good friends which they borrowed from each other where Conan has a run-in with Cthulhu. Then there's Marvel, where in an alternate universe the events of Evil Dead are canon. Furthermore, the Necronomicon is also referred to as the Darkhold. Therefore, Dr Strange, Conan the Barbarian, and Ash could fight Lovectaftian gods.
38:05 In A Nightmare on Elm Street, there's an Evil Dead poster on Nancy's bedroom wall. To return Wes Craven's homage, Freddy's glove is hanging above the shop door behind Ash. Easier to see when he first enters the shop.
Fun Fact: The Evil Dead movies canonically take place in the same universe as Nightmare/Friday films. The Necronomicon makes an appearance in Jason Goes to Hell, the director of that movie even confirms they take place in the same universe and that Jason Voorhees is a Deadite, there's also two official comic book sequels to the Freddy vs. Jason movie (Freddy vs. Jason vs. Ash) adapted from an official sequel movie script. Freddy's glove also makes a cameo in the first Evil Dead.

@@roxystriar Yup! And side fun fact: Jason also fought another chainsaw wielding-horror icon in the comics, Leatherface from The Texas Chainsaw Massacre!
@@roxystriarJason Goes to Hell is a lot more fun if you think of it as an Evil Dead spin-off (which the director has since confirmed was his intention). You see the Necronomicon in the Voorhees home and the dagger from that film makes its first appearance in Evil Dead II. Jason is, by this theory, a deadite demon, perhaps a higher level one. JGTH is kind of a crap movie by Friday standards, but having this knowledge makes it more enjoyable.
The first Evil Dead did incredibly well. Even Stephen King praised it which might have helped it a lot too. the camerawork in the Evil Dead movies are beyond amazing! Bruce Campbell is the man and today is the stereotypical uncle-type! Such a lovable and funny guy! And that chin, man!
The movie officially starts when Ash is picked up and crashes through the trees. Rami was unable to get the rights to use footage from the first film, so they had to re-film a condensed recap.
#3 Army of Darkness is more campy comedy horror with little gore so they could get it down to a R rating ( studio never got the PG13 that they wanted and really should have received ) it is a great sequel. The 3 seasons of Ash Vs Evil Dead are a great combination of gore , horror and comedy, since they could do their thing on cable and not have to worry about , what rating it would be. Bruce Campbell makes these great 🧟♂
Bruce has gone on to say his dream version of this movie is the first movie and since the ending of the first movie can lead into a portion of the second movie (him being thrown through the woods backwards is in BOTH movies and can be easily mixed thus making the first and second one seamless movie. The ending of this one and the beginning of the third in the series can ALSO be cut up in this way. I have a version of the film that is THREE AND A HALF HOURS long because it mixes Evil Dead, Evil Dead 2 and Army of Darkness into one long movie and it's grand.
Ash Vs Evil Dead did a great job of balancing the comedy and horror. Also the tree scene from the 1st movie Sam Rami regretted it so he used the second one to change it.
Can’t wait for Army of Darkness next and I hope Tara and Roxy are going to do the reboot and Rise even though Greg and John have reactions on the channel.
There were no alternate options for the "groovy" line. It was in the script. And the stage direction was written as so: "ASH (for no apparent reason): Groovy."
It's particularly amusing that you picked up on the ADR "workshed". When Kurt Russell met Bruce on the set of "Escape From LA", Kurt's son Wyatt had asked his dad to ask Bruce to say "workshed." Evil Dead II is a favorite in the Russell/Hawn household. 😉
It’s definitely a sequel, not a remake or “soft reboot.” The initial recap of the first film might confuse some viewers, making it feel like a do-over, like déjà vu, but with more chainsaws. Sam Raimi included it because he couldn’t use original footage. After that, the story picks up right where Evil Dead left off. While it has a different tone with more humor, it’s still a continuation of Ash’s journey, think of it as Ash’s vacation gone horribly wrong. Both Raimi and Bruce Campbell have consistently stated that it was always intended as a sequel, not just a “let’s try this again” moment
@@alucard624She'd only recently gotten over some COVID, so maybe there are some lingering effects that she still needed to take something for. Makes sense, yes?
The beginning of ED II is not considered canon. It was just a way to quickly recap the first movie for people who forgot or didn’t see it, since a few years had passed between films, and a different studio owned the rights to the first one, so they couldn’t reuse footage. Bruce Campbell has said just skip the recap and start at the point where the first left off.
As a kid this I thought was just silly and intentionally so. When I got older and more learned I understood this filming is actually genius. Also I have to respect their devotion to this franchise. Else I know you probably have a schedule but if you get a chance pen Bubba Ho-Tep in. Also as previously these two need to watch Return Of The Living Dead if for no other reason than the cast. Forget the sequels and just do the first one. You are both going to get a big kick out it.
Part 1 is straight horror, Part 2 is an equal mix of horror and comedy, and part 3 is almost all comedy with only some horror. I think that’s why people think part 2 is the best, the perfect mix. Although I like straight horror more so Part 1 is my fav.
Great reaction. Make surento watch the Theatrical version of Army of Darkness (evil dead 3). It's the best version and canon. Ash vs. Evil Dead follows the theatrical cut.
Let's go!!! My favorite of the series. This movie is 100% Sam Raimi unleashed. It's such gory, inventive camp. Raimi and Campbell wanted to make a direct sequel to the first Evil Dead, but they couldn't acquire the rights to their own movie, so the opening 20+ minutes of this film are a loose retelling of the original. The sequel really picks up where the original left off, with Ash being hit by the Evil force that knocks him through the woods.
@@MarioBario Not really that random. Just an out-of-context comment until they watch AoD, then it's one of those "oh, so that's what they meant" moments. Assuming the channel team actually ever read my comment in the first place, of course.

@@afroahmed3989I'm sure they don't care about every movie but if they didn't love movies in general they wouldn't be on UA-cam constantly talkin about them. Its a career for them not just a side hustle
I still regularly use the word 'groovy', delivered exactly as Ash says it.
Same.
I love the Evil Dead series. The movies and tv show are still my favorite things to binge every few months.
I love when she stabs the hillbilly guy, then repeatedly bangs the door on him, before pulling the knife out and shouting at him to be quiet, and then dragging him towards her deadite mother and his death!😂
Best Horror Comedy ever! Bruce Campbell is Groovy!
It's funny you mention "Swamp Boy" because in the comics, Ash actually fights Jason Vorhees himself! And one hypothesis suggests that Jason is actually a Deadite brought to life by the Necronomicon!
Omg whaaat
@@MattKayserdon't forget Tommy had the book of the dead in part 6 too
@@dgenerate707 oh shoot, I either didn't know that or straight up forgot.
Since Tara and Roxy loved the 1st two they will love the 3rd one in a groovy way. 👌
ED 3 is more comedic. The reboot (2016) is extremely more scary. Ash vs ED(tv) is more like 2 but much better FX. Loved the reaction ❤
Bruce Campbell makes these great 🧟♂
The reboot is not scary to me. Just over the top bloody. Still question how the heal the made girl gets her tongue healed. 😅
The whole time I was anticipating their reaction to "groovy". They did not disappoint! And I love that they couldn't/ wouldn't stop saying it!
Sorry for the late comment but this is one of my favorite Horror franchises I’m excited to go on this journey with you Shejects!!
Roxy - If you care about me you'll stop! Also Roxy- PURGE!!!!!
17:38 how did you miss the book title? A farewell to arms.
Cause they don't care?
@@afroahmed3989 That and they are not vary bright. Half the time they are talking nonsense and not paying attention or not even looking at the screen.
There are 2 lines/quotes that are iconic to this franchise. One of them is "Groovy". The other is in the next film.
There are several in the next one.
When are you guys going to watch the greatest film of all time? Evil Dead 3: Army of Darkness
Bruce Campbell doing all the slapstick stuff by himself in the first half is hilarious
Yes, Bruce Campbell done his own flips and stunts.
There were no alternate options for the "groovy" line. It was in the script. And the stage direction was written as so:
"ASH (for no apparent reason): Groovy."
It's particularly amusing that you picked up on the ADR "workshed".
When Kurt Russell met Bruce on the set of "Escape From LA", Kurt's son Wyatt had asked his dad to ask Bruce to say "workshed."
Evil Dead II is a favorite in the Russell/Hawn household. 😉
Greg Nicotero did the makeup and monsters, some of his early work..
38:05 The tagline for the entire Evil Dead franchise and the character of Ashley Joanna Williams aka _The Chosen One._
His middle names Joanna ?
@@ethandoyle4978 Supposedly. Messed up, right? It's like that Johnny Cash song "A Boy Named Sue"...
Man, Tara is ZOOTED 😂
Phuckin California
Groovy 🤣🤣…this is the new “Paul, Paul” lol you guys crack me up haha…wish Tara aka Tarafier had reacted with Roxy and Greg watching Terrrifier
Groovy.
To this day I am STILL going with Groovy
the most disturbing part about the eyeball scene is we know she didnt spit it out because they added what sounded like a cartoony swallowing effect.
The Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell colab is such a vibe 😂😂😍😍🔥🔥
Tara rewarded me with another moment I want on constant loop at 22:28
Y'all missed the Farewell to Arms joke. The book on top of the cut off hand was the book Farewell to Arms
@15:07 I love how Roxy just rattled off the Numbers!
Groovy is fucking iconic lol
💯
Tara is so stoned during this :P
She definitely looked like she was on something throughout the video.
@@alucard624She'd only recently gotten over some COVID, so maybe there are some lingering effects that she still needed to take something for. Makes sense, yes?
@@Robert_Douglasswhat's wrong with her being stoned? No one saying that's a bad thing
This was not meant to be taken seriously. It's more of a comedy than the first one. You'll understand when you watch Army of Darkness.
These two dont understand anything.
@@lenoliver-k6grude
@@noahsaboliauskas7753 🤣🤣We all love president Trump!!!!!!!
Roxy and Tara are amazingly groovy!!! 😂😂😂
❤❤
Here we are, baby!! More Ash and gore goodness. You both brighten up my day. Thank you. ❤
Love this
I can see the merch already Groovy She-Jects with flying eyeballs
Roxy’s look is giving Jenna Marbles
I get that sometimes!
Watching you two react to this is like watching two people doped up on Valium watch something.......
If the words " unbotherd " and " not interested" were two people.
Tara just recovered from being sick and Roxy was tired. They were not uninterested
Shejects, keep rolling! You got some fun stuff coming up. I can't wait.
Groovy will become his catchphrase in every movie after this
When he mentions the word groovy is so iconic for that era
It still starts with a “g” and ends with a “y”but so SO much more in between
So which ending option are you going to pick for Army of Darkness? Or just watch all of them?
Probably theatrical
I’m so glad they’re finally doing these! Please do the show (Greg)!!
Yes, Blair is Starr's mom with Todd. She did a little cameo recently on GH.
Hail to the king, baby!
Damn, Roxy has been through the wringer lately... lol, please 🙏 keep it going 😅
For real! Lol
Shop smart. Shop S-Mart. YOU GOT THAT?!
Hey your shoes are untied.
Quoting army of darkness during evil dead 2?... random
@@MarioBario Not really that random. Just an out-of-context comment until they watch AoD, then it's one of those "oh, so that's what they meant" moments. Assuming the channel team actually ever read my comment in the first place, of course.
