- The original version of the song, The Cat came back was written in
the late 1800's. This is the version i like, it has a different chord structure
than the original. It's in the key of A . The song i wrote for Julia and Lex is
based on this version of the song. ( With some modification to the music and lyrics, of course.
Very similar to Yodeling Slim Clarks version from 1950. A favorite of mine for nearly 70 years.
I remember another verse where they found the cat with her kittens so it ends with “ I guess even cats have a responsibility “
Wish I could find that version
Lee Moore done the version were the cat seven little kittens in the hay.
Doc recorded this song in 1955. Went gold in Canada. It was recorded on 78 45 etc.
Doc had 4 or 5 hits around that time. There's something very unique about Doc's Voice, took me awile to figure it out too.
Most all singers use vibrato to sustain notes ( especially at the end of a line ). Doc virtually uses NO vibrato at all and sorta
lets his voice drawl ( or drag ) to the end. For some reason or another it makes his songs VERY listenable. There are a few
other singers that sing like that and all have been verry succesful, to say the least. The other two that i can think of at the
moment are Stomping Tom Conners and Johnny Cash. I'm going to make a playlist if i can of non vibrato singers, it may take
a little time though. Glad you enjoyd the song and it's always nice to get comments.
@@flipperjones9528 Most bluegrass singers use no vibrato at all, too. It could be that Doc was influenced by that.
What year was this recorded ?
Written by Tin Pan Alley composer Harry S. Miller as a minstrel number in 1893, the comical song was first recorded the following year by Charles Marsh and was picked up in the early 1920s by country singer Fiddlin' John Carson. The song, like the cat, kept coming back. Different Artist down through the years redone the song with slightly different arrangements including Doc Williams as well as the above mentioned Artists.
