    I continuously tell myself to only spend money on food, drinks, and stuff around the house (i.e. a 5-year old iron that no longer works). I’m also guilty of buying too much clothes, purses, makeup, and skin care products. I noticed that I do my shopping right after watching an influencer on UA-cam. I no longer watch haul videos and I’m very picky nowadays on who to watch on-line. Yes, I blame the social media, lol.

      An interesting thing that Hannah did was keep consuming content during her no buy Year and afterwards.
      I found that for me I would never stop watching UA-cam because it feels like going to rehab.
      In rehab resisting temptation is easy: there are none around you. But what about real life? Once you're back in your old environment with the old temptations luring your old habits back, what to do then? So I also did a no-buy year whilst keep watching beauty UA-cam, and just like Hannah slowly it just doesn't tempt me as much as it did before. I highly recommend that!

      I find issues with that too! I've had to severely limit the haul videos I watch, because otherwise I'll want to buy it all. Another thing I've done is to tell myself that I can't buy things after a certain time

    To people saying Hannah is being repetitive... How often in your life do you get the message TO buy? And how often do you get the message NOT to buy? Balancing the buy message with the don't buy message... Is actually, kind of the message.

    I also have a "shopping is dopamine" addiction and would love to do a no-buy year or at least a few months... But my instant emotion is just "oh that means I have to buy ALL THE THINGS while I can! All the stuff I want before I start!!"

    • @EvaLoVerde
      @EvaLoVerde Рік тому +7

      @@EvaLoVerde I was thinking more in terms of, that I can't start TODAY, obviously, I need to give myself time, I can't just not buy stuff, what if I "need" stuff?, the stuff I want won't be available in x months' time, etc etc etc. I don't even make impulsive purchases that much, I research and think about things for weeks, and build ever greater shopping carts on various websites, and I become attached to ALL of those wants :(

    • @EvaLoVerde
      @EvaLoVerde Рік тому +5

      @@Zelomakitoko so there's a well of questions here: why can't you just start today? It's your choice to buy or not. As per the "need". Is it actually a need or a want you can't say no to? Before my no buy year I made a list of the actual needs (for example I'm allowed to buy stuff for work, stuff for health etc.)
      The big one. Why do you need to do a no buy, if you're careful with your purchases? Why do you get attached to a list of things? Is it connected to identity?
      You don't need to answer of course, but answer for yourself.

    Thank you for filming this series. I’m old enough to remember the “subliminal” advertising scandal of the fifties, (a quick flash of a product embedded in a show which was only registered by to subconscious not the conscious mind), my mother blind testing products and rating them for a work project a neighbor was doing in the sixties, where the “working” ingredients of the product were left, but the “fluff” ingredients were removed, ( shampoo without the foaming, powdered detergent without artificial coloring), and in the seventies seeing the consumer products she had tested, which in her opinion, seemed to work about equally, brought to the public complete with bells and whistles, for consumption. Now, and here’s the irony, fighting an “addiction” to watching (you guessed it!) UA-cam! When I researched why, I learned of the dopamine hit! Think of all the research that went into knowing how to manipulate one’s brain chemicals. They learned so much from this past experience of how to get the public “hooked”! It’s about the same as watching TV all day- a distraction from doing the hard work that Hannah spoke of…and housework. Always avoiding the housework. Sigh

    Thank you for specking directly to the MESSY parts of your project. So many videos are "do these 10 things and you'll change your life..." and it's not that simple is it? When you fix all the habits that are broken then your left with the ugly truth that "it is I who am broken." That's harder to navigate. Thank you for making sure people know that there's no "Quick fix" to a fully realized life.

    My (almost) no-buy year(s) has made me realize that I used shopping to up myself, when what I needed was actual medication. Since then I've calculated how much I spent unnecessarily, and sold things off, and gotten a third of that amount back. Which is huge since I lack an income. I'm sad it took me not having an income to realize my shopping addiction, but damn am I proud of myself for my recovery!

    I did a low buy year for 2022 and I felt very similarly. Its so much easier for me to buy something I really want without feeling guilt or shame when I'm not constantly buying a bunch of nonsense. I also get so much more use out of my things because I'm not buying a million things that will get lost in my closet or in my kitchen. I'm also so much more aware of my things, and much more honest about their utility so I don't feel as attached to things that aren't serving me as well as I might have imagined. I started doing clothing swaps with my friends because I started decluttering so many cute clothes that just don't suit me and it feels so nice to see my friends and family enjoy them.

It is easier for me to do skincare/makeup because I have products to last me well over a year and a few products that haven't been used in over a year 🤯. The clothes aspect is a lot more difficult but I have been following through. No new clothes since May and it's September! Wish lists are my best friend but I might break my no buy for fall/winter fashion lol I love clothes 🤗

    This is a great video! One thing I also do to help contain any clutter or acquiring too much makeup, for instance, is creating a boundary of no more of something if that box, basket, pouch, or container is full of something. This helps draw a line (literally) in my bathroom of how many products can live in there at one time and saves some money, time and space. The same also goes for clothes and other belongings. If something doesn’t fit beyond the confines of a drawer or box, I need to trade out something old to bring something new in. Or wait until the container of whatever is used up before buying new. I hope this tip could help someone out there. This is wonderful content.

    I know it's so counterintuitive to the whole point but PLEASE LINK THAT BLOUSE!
    I was thinking it the entire video and had to check myself that my work in correcting these behaviors in myself is far from over.
    I've done no spend months, and it's got me to " open doors" & realize some things about myself, but it's also sometimes an issue with outside forces, like a lack of affordable mental health options that could help combat feelings of inadequacy guilt and shame.
    It creates a crappy cycle of self hatred that I'll say "I have how much on my credit card?!" , consider using therapy to unpack past trauma and why I need dopamine hits from shopping, realize I can't afford that help so I'll just buy a new outfit ( cheaper than the therapy but all that's in my control ).
    It's definitely a long term process taken one day at a time!
    For anyone else in that cycle - you're not alone!

    I spent 3 afternoon last week taking pic of all my skincare/beauty/makeup products then I have put them in category, they were my back up all in boxes, lot of stuff from last xmas not open, (I had 5 calendars + 2 (12 days) and I think around 10 special boxes like the night before xmas box , the bath and body edit , 2 rituals set, 4 elemis set and more and more + an accumulation of 3 subs (monthly) anyway it took me that long to catalogue. needless to say I am on a no buy and that is killing me as it is calendars season , the fomo and but it is such a good deal excuse... I am blooming drowning in the stuff but I still want those shiny new little bottle of magic. my head says no you got more than enoigh , you don't need, you really have not got the money anymore, but I feel so sad and deprived (really ?) it is such a conflict of emotions, I feel horrible but I also feel guilty to feel that way when I got so much. anyway when I feel like I am about to cave I just look at the pics on my phone and that is going to keep me on track, there is about 200 bath and shower products in the house and a good third is high end, it is 4 of us in the house but still it is bad. I know I should not watch youtube unboxing but I can't stop looking. I went all week without qvc beauty so that is a small victory. I have not bought anything clothes or beauty in a month so I am proud of that, same on clothes/bags and shoes. my 3 subs are now finished so nothing is coming in. for the first time I feel in a very fragile control over the spending ( I am keeping all the recept from supermarket and I have not bought any candles/room spray, bedding or home decor) I am hanging in there and keep thinking at the 6 months in brain change... I must say fighting your own urges is horrible but I now have the support of my husband who I can talk too when it is overwhelming so I take it one day at the time

I had to cleanse my environment of all temptation 😬😬😬 now I'm relying on the box of sample products, or "shopping" in my family members closet whenever I have the urge for something new. Next is to put more of my focus towards (money-making) work and non-spending hobbies. Whooo slow and steady, sis! Slow but steady.

I feel it's more out of respect than avoidance of claiming she has/had an addiction.

    Not a huge fan of Hannah tbh. Her voice and cadence feel very condescending and cult leaderish. Def not her intention, and I am sure many find her calming. Just not me. :(

      Exactly! Like, it's the same message conveyed on all of her 4 videos here on TFD. Imo, only one video of her would be enough, cause the things that she told here are almost repeated four times already!
