This is more a work thing than entirely a money thing, but you can’t mention Charlotte quitting her job without talking about Carrie moving to Paris with Petrovsky. That was idiotic on so many levels, way beyond the fact that they too had nothing in common. What was her plan? No French intensive class? No book-length writing project? Even if they had been wildly in love and truly compatible, he was in Paris to work on his gallery opening. What did she picture herself doing every day after the first week or so? How does a grown ass woman have no better sense of purpose than that? Oh that drove me crazy. Still does obviously…

Part of Carrie's arc is that she is a Romantic with a capital R- so she is big into her idealistic view of things and does not have any sort of pragmaticism or particular purpose. So when we view Carrie, we see what happens when a Romantic person makes Romantic decisions- they are laughably bad. Carrie sees herself as a sophisticated, Romantic New Yorker- but in reality she is a provincial, rather naive person who lacks real curiosity about Paris, France or even trying make new acquaintances.

Objectively Charolette selling her ring was a terrible choice, but it does fit thematically with each of the girls have a part in Carrie's engagement to Aiden (in reality, to her friends.) Miranda picked out the ring she hated, Samantha picked out the ring she never wore, and Charlotte sold her own ring to give Carrie a home. In their own way they all sort of proposed to her.

sometimes I do think our friends' advice on our own relationships should be taken with a grain of salt... they may tell you to go on with a person cause they're nice, treat you well, etc, i.e. 'on paper' arguments, when you voice your concerns about the relationship not feeling right on a gut level (so, argument that's subjective to you), so yes the girl's opinions may have influenced Carrie to stay with him for longer that she would have otherwise

Or how she refuses to move out of NYC because "she is a NYC girl". The fact that she is the protagonist of the show and somehow "made it" by scoring a top-selling book, and scoring a top-notch Daddy (Big, so rich and handsome), is the kind of FALSE REALITY that influenced alot of the bad spending and entitled culture that we are seeing here, especially in women. Smith was a King and Trey really was a great guy who got married too fast to a girl who he had one major incompatibility with that was a mutual dealbreaker. The rest of the guys in the show make very weird decisions in regards to both money and relationships.

The argument with Charlotte always drives me crazy. And how Carrie claims she wouldn’t even have taken it, but days later she does take Charlotte’s money, promising to pay her back, but it’s never mentioned again. I guess the writers had to drop the storyline b/c otherwise Charlotte would’ve spent the rest of the series getting annoyed at Carrie for continuing to live beyond her means while she owes Charlotte $30k.
Also it always stuck with me when Carrie asks who has $30k and Miranda says she has half that. Miranda is a successful lawyer & only has $15k in savings? That seems low even for the 90s.
