Statistically speaking, teams with great defenses usually have decent bigs. Why is this important? It allows funneling, meaning- the perimeter defender sending the guards to the bigs.
This puts the perimeter defender in better position to guard the long and mid range shot attempts. This is why Dallas defense went from trash to great after getting PJ and Gafford in the trade.
DJJ was the point of attack defender before the trade, why wasn’t he stopping people then? That’s because he’s an ok defender, just like Klay. Klay will do the same in this system defensively as DJJ, watch and see.

All Klay has to do is sit behind the 3pt Line and hit 3s which was by far the biggest issue with Dallas in the Finals. Which will open up things for Kyrie and teams can't just double team him. No team can really stop Luka at his Size and Skill level at his position. So did any other TEAM in the WEST really do anything. Seems like most was done in the EAST.

  • @drew318

If they stay healthy, the Mavs are the favorites in the West. OKC’s additions aren’t enough to overcome Dallas’s elite paint protection and scoring. Klay has 1-2 good years in him, I think we see a career year from him this year % wise and that we will see a big improvement in his defense from the last couple years, the reason being that he will not have to expend as much energy on offense as he has since KD left GS.

    • @andrewtheworldcitizen
      @andrewtheworldcitizen 16 днів тому

      THANK YOU!
But the answer to that is twofold:
      1. Draymond has been an indispensable piece for the Warriors and in their championships....
The Warriors never had anyone else like Draymond who is that good on the defensive end and a playmaker and passer who has that high of a basketball IQ....
He is that piece to the puzzle that has been most important and most crucial to their success as a team, because if we are honest, they are basically all shooting and offense without him....
Draymond is that piece that they simply wouldn't have or be able to replace.....
In short, Draymond is a beast on defense who does all the dirty work....
He is also a veteran leader who fires up the team....
      2. Steph is absolutely the one player that GS can not let go for any reason....
He is their whole team and their franchise, and Steph is tight with Draymond and has made it clear that he needs Draymond by his side on defense, so the front office of GS is actually terrified of the idea of a future in which they got rid of all of Steph's friends and teammates who he liked the most and needed the most, so eventually he left the team to end his career somewhere else....
So they keep Draymond and treat him way better than they really should out of fear of losing Steph....
Imagine being Steph and knowing that you are like a god when it comes to shooting and ball handling and offense, but the one area of the game that could be called your weakness is defense....
Plus, Draymond takes a lot of the burden off Steph's shoulders when it comes to being the leader of the team.....
Steph is definitely the real captain of the team, but Draymond helps Steph a ton with leading the team and the young players.....

On the point of attack defender question, the Mavs have Naji Marshall, PJ Washington and Olivier Maxence-Prosper. They may also sign Dennis Smith Junior but its fair to point out that none of those guys are as good as Derrick Jones Junior at the job.

Klay, Luka, and Kyrie can still play defense but I don’t expect you casuals to know (90% of the comments). Gafford, Lively, Grimes, Naji, and Pj are GREAT defenders.
Now ask, who’s stopping them on defense? Luka with a bunch of gleaguers can take you to the playoffs. Hurt Luka and average role players can take you to the Finals. Now he’s got a squad, which should equal several championships.

A month before the Warriors season ended the GSW owner Joe Lacob took Klay golfing and never discussed his contract or future with the team. That fact that they kept Draymond (who most players and teammates are afraid of) at $25m and let Klay go for $16.5m tells me the GSW "culture" is no longer one of the best in the NBA.
