  • A team of MIT researchers have observed that when salty water evaporates from a heated, superhydrophobic surface the crystal structures that form can easily be removed or roll away on their own. This phenomenon could make it possible to use brackish or salty water, without any pretreatment, rather than relying on freshwater sources, for cooling systems in power plants. Very cool.

But how? Do they mean salt deposits "walking off" the evaporative surface on their own?

@@pingwingugu5 Yes I think so. The salt won't bind to the insides of the pipes as much.

I threw salt with my bare hands for a living and my hands would get so dry crystals would form on them. This has been tested in the field.

If you can hope to cool an engine by sprinkling brine on its surface. However In practice, the cackling of salt would not yield such structures as the water seeps via capillary action with the residues left on the surface. There is a reason these videos have a slick perfect surface to start the process.

What we do is use only filtered water for the kettle. Works like a charm. I realize however that while our water is a bit hard, it's not nearly as bad as it is in other places.
