A completely flat fisheye lens

- Engineers at MIT and the University of Massachusetts at Lowell have designed a wide-angle lens that is completely flat. It is the first flat fisheye lens to produce crisp, 180-degree panoramic images. (Learn more: news.mit.edu/2020/flat-fisheye...)

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology is an independent, coeducational, privately endowed university in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Our mission is to advance knowledge; to educate students in science, engineering, technology, humanities and social sciences; and to tackle the most pressing problems facing the world today. We are a community of hands-on problem-solvers in love with fundamental science and eager to make the world a better place.
The MIT UA-cam channel features videos about all types of MIT research, including the robot cheetah, LIGO, gravitational waves, mathematics, and bombardier beetles, as well as videos on origami, time capsules, and other aspects of life and culture on the MIT campus. Our goal is to open the doors of MIT and bring the Institute to the world through video. - Наука та технологія
This, along with the right corrective display image processing, could possibly make VR/AR wearables much much smaller.
VR doesn't need flat lens that can give a crisp small image from a panoramic view bigger than the lens, but instead a flat lens that could give a crisp panoramic view from a tiny image/display smaller that the lens.
It’s like a mega fresnel. Wow!
I read about this theoretical meta lens research a few years back... nice to see it working in the lab.
A meta lens contact lens.. that’s the ticket!
Imagine inceeasing the Field of view for humans, wow
@@KevinMsyah Hmm, what are the psychological effects of this, though? Will it make you dizzy if you turn your head a lot?

See it one time for fun.
Can be used in future AR. Great research!
Skateboarding videos will never be the same
So it's like a micro-scale Fresnel lens, but without the blurring/distortion?
Really cool.
Could give computer vision applications awesome peripheral vision, just with the IR version.
If it's truely 180deg view (as stated in the link), 2x back to back = 360deg undistorted image.
And if they make the visible light version I'd love to see a version for full-frame cameras and get a feel for the images - might give a medium-format feel?
This will be a great innovation for 360 camera, nowadays they all lack of resolution details on the edges due the extreme fisheye lens and possibility to be standard high resolution. Great research.
Very cool stuff. No comment on if there is a solution to making it work for a range of wavelengths at once though. For me that seems like it's always going to be a big limitation of these meta lenses.
Great, interesting development. Thanks, for sharing this discovery we should look forward to.
Interesting!!! I bet this'll be an important step towards new tech!
Should be cool for VR headsets.
Interesting indeed.
Amazing.
Excellent working.
Thank you for sharing.
This is awesome, i can see that it will be used, if everything goes well, in next 2-3 generations of samsung, apple, huawei and other brands devices.
20gens later... we'll be still waiting

I love MIT. So cool institution.
Great for smaller, lighter satellite telescopes/observatories too?
Really good work
I'm soooooo interested in what you do great MIT💙... And I interested in science generally so I try to explain it for people with simple and enjoyable way to make them love and feel the wonderful magic 💎of science❤❤❤
It's like a Zone Plate.
Interesting!
ah i was wondering about this. cool
Amazing
Crisp and clear are... words.
Perhaps not the ones I would have used.
Dose this means better cameras
What r the requirements for getting into MIT? And how should I apply?
I wish i was there
OK!

How can I join mit
@Boundary Theory for what
@Boundary Theory brother presently I m in cladd 10
@@fanboy7521 I am in 10th too....
So if you wanna go in MIT, do extra curricular activities and make sure you have at least 1 international medal(IPhO, ICO, IBO, IIAO, IMO, IJSO, JSO, etc..)... Also, you have to give SAT or CAT.. If you are from a country whose native or national language is other than english, then you will also have to give TOEFL...... After doing all this apply for MIT in 12th standard and see if you can get 90%scholarship...
Peace

"The new lens produced images of stripes that were crisp and clear even at the edges of the camera's view" Proceeds to show blurry footage that looks like it was shot in 1800's.
It was blurry but the camera showed it can be flat
It’s still being made
THE MK1 IS BETTER
That's no mystery, I thought if this over a decade ago. Though, I'll get no credit for thinking of it.
Merle Patterson - a guy who thought about something cool but never wrote it down or did it. There, you get credit now!
@@zachlevy Actually, to my recollection, I did post it at the time. I'd have to go through my archive to find it. Though, it's nothing special either way. It's really simple at the end of the day. This video just reminded me of something long forgotten.
