Growing up in America, we didn't really get to see all the FIM GP's on TV. I had to rely on magazines like Cycle News, American Roadracing, etc. Another publication, Motocourse, hard copy publication , the aftermath of the season, I would read about these races. 40 years later, I get to watch these races, very special for me, thank you for this.
@@demonmonsterdave in order to answer that question, I feel that I am not qualified to answer that, we should get assessment from the media during that era. My first response, I deleted because it was too long. Yes, I've always wondered why we didn't get much coverage on this. I've only watched the 89 race in Germany and France. As for the US races, I was actually at the 88, 89, and 93 and 94 grand prix as well as 2008, at Laguna Seca in California. If anyone who worked in the media during that era, please chime in.
After 9 years of posting this video, I'm still happy to see an exciting race like this. The Hondas are much better in corners and Lawson's Yamaha is faster on the straights....The Golden Age of Motorcycling, Amazing.
I so dearly miss this unsanitized version of Assen, with all of its weird meandering non-straights and corners that shouldn't be corners but they are. They lost a lot of its character when the track was shortened and redesigned.
Great video. This was the first Dutch TT I watched on TV, together with my father who visited the TT Always in th 50's. I still remember the typical starting procedure. Less than 5 years later when I had my drivers licence I drove with my car on the track. Those days it was part of the public road. In 1992 they closed it for traffic, because there were too much amateur racing drivers in the weekend :)
Great race from back in the day, the golden-age of 2-strokes and Americans winning the championships. Fast Freddy lived up to his name, until he DNFed and Steady Eddie did the wise thing in backing off to conserve his championship chances. I was surprised at how fast and fearless Raymond Roche, the flying Frenchman was. Also notice how many back-markers there were that had to be avoided and used to advantage, something not seen in modern Moto GP.
Yes! It is painful to see ThE First laps....ThE suzi seems 20 kmh slower than the honda-3.....And 30 kmh slower than Freddie. Even though, he can be in front cause he is great. He could have won the race if he had not had mechanical failure
Hello from Japan. Takazumi Katayama came back to WGP in this race from vital crash on final Imola round of last year. Tadahiko Taira challenged WGP as spot entrant in this race. At that time he was development rider of Yamaha participating in Japan domestic championship race.
10:29 Where does the rider take out a cigarette? Was he riding and planning to stop for a smoke? Rob Punt looked like he was another rock'n roll rider too.
I've noticed watching all of these old 500 GP races that required push starting, the Hondas seem to light off immediately while the Yamahas struggle to get going. The Suzukis.....they were just slow regardless.
Yeah honda motorcycle are awesome in old days, but now their comercial motorcycle is crap, and yamaha better than honda right now. From quality to quantity
Sadly true. I was a Rocket Ron fan since his days racing Dave Potter in UK on the 750's. You always felt he had it in him to do better but it never happened. Really disappointing but, in fairness, he never made excuses
I was never a big fan of the push starts- it just added another element to something catastrophic happening at the start - I remember KR trying for YEARS for a rule change- So as usual, they finally changed it after someone got hit and killed at the start of a 250 race- (Can't remember the details, but I remember someone lost his life)-

Same here in the UK,we got occasional races like this but they were never advertised
USA was completely dominant for a decade. I wonder what reasons they had for not publicising such a great sporting time for your country.

Concordo com você, o forte da Honda NS500 era a agilidade em curvas e numa pista como Assen Lawson ainda conseguia muito ao acompanhar Mamola e Roche.
I.m born and live 500 meters from Assen T T circuit have seen many legend races, but that oldschool T T circuit and 500 cc is the best💪💪💪💪
Great race. Neck and neck to the end. Love the two strokes.
I was there ! (Then on to Spa Francorchamps for the next race )
Great payback from Randy! :).....Great win!!!

(Problem was that they, as it was a public road, rode it both ways...and sometimes met in the middle...)

The NS was so compact, that the frame got burning hot too.
NOT the mechanic’s bike.

Heerlijk dat oude circuit. Vooral de knik na start/finish.
Classic Assen.
What you don't see here is Sheene thumping the petrol tank with his fist when then engine let go. I was at the Strubben Tribune, great race

In todays standard on a race track ASSEN would not be accepted - its to narrow and no runof areas , its a so called Mickey Mouse track .
