Just re watched this gem of a series for the 5th time. I think when Freddy realized he needed to move on from Ray was when Ray barged into his family's house and went ham with the scatter gun. That incident made it easier to go along with Rafael and lure Ray and Dave into the ambush. I'm glad Ray didn't carry out revenge on Freddy that night. He just let him know that he survived and was going to be around, forever making Freddy look over his shoulder. Most shows are checkers. Mr Inbetween is chess.
Freddy got a pass, because he killed his cousin and scared his extended family. (He did think they stole his daughter's friend at the time.) History plays a role, friendship plays a role. The last look his gives him says he gets a pass ONCE.
Ray was the only reason Freddie lived as long as he did. Freddy would drop The Magicians name and No one would touch him. With Ray gone Freddy doesn't stand a chance. Good Riddance Fred 😊

I got Disney plus for a month to watch Shogun, which was great. Had a couple of days left and had seen a few clips of this on UA-cam. I couldn't stop and binge watched all three series in 48 hours. At least as good as Breaking Bad.
For freddy to turn on ray was the ultimate betrayal. You always find out sooner or later who your friends are. When they show you who they are, believe them the first time .

[One even climbed up the back of my laptop and crawled onto the screen {Yes, it made me jump out of my chair 😱}] Life expectancy is about three days before finding their empty husk. I'd no idea what was killing them until I saw four daddy-long-legs cornering one that was near my front door. Over three days, every time I walked past my front door I'd see the daddy-long-legs getting closer and closer until they got him.
Freddy got too comfortable with taking rays generosity for granted. Freddy was in a world where he was not cut out for the life he tried to potray he belonged. Ray could have done a hell of a lot more damage to everyone but he just wanted to be living in peace despite his temperament.
If it makes it easier, Scott Ryan said he was ready to move on the character. It's rare for someone to choose that path, more often than not, they try to milk it for all its worth until it's ruined.

It's just ending on a cliffhanger like that with me having no idea it was a 3 season series and done, I went 2 whole days where, in my brain, there would be a season 4. In essence, season 4 existed, then when I went to look up when to expect it, I was crushed. I still haven't figured out what demmies are. And I'm crushed Freddie (who I LOVED in justified, now there is an impressive bloke) betrayed him. So much expectation denied. But hey I'm thankful he gave us all he did. Was an excellent show. There were so many great lines! I don’t think I’ve ever had a 30 min show give me more emotions than this one. And to think I thought it was just about a hitman and his job! It dug so much deeper and I enjoyed every second! Hate that it ended.😢

Freddy's indifference when ray is upset about killing the wrong person says a lot about his character. To ray, Freddy was a friend but to Freddy, Ray was just a tool. Its sad that people have relationships like that sometimes. But after all Ray did for Freddy, for him to set Ray up and not even try to renege somehow, i felt so bad for Ray the big hearted hitman.
Even for Freddy, that was just LOW of him to sell Ray out like that. Like even from a purely business perspective. Ray is one of the best in the business, he's saved Freddy's hide so many times! I like to think Freddy ends up getting killed afterward after doing something idiotic. No more Ray to bail him out. Too bad!

But getting Dave killed had no foundation in Ray’s transgression, that Dave died and Freddy lived is an injustice.

Gaz is kind of a degenerate, a foil to Ray's level headed, almost boring man, penchant for violence notwithstanding. Ray does not like the things Gaz likes, and at times seemingly just tolerates his presence. Freddy is also a bit of a degenerate, albeit a capable businessman. And yet, Ray is friends with both of them. Dave has more in common with Ray, and they obviously have better rapport and banter, a barely contained bromance. Ray is friends with him too. Loyalty with Gaz I would argue is long standing, what we're shown in the series is just continued cycle of reciprocal returning of favour: nobody remembers the beginning, and there is no end, as long as one continues to return the favour. That's how male friendships work. "Just buy us a beer". I think that's what Ray speaks about when he says "I'm big on respect". Freddy gives Ray work, Ray saves Freddy by basically taking on his debts. It works, until Freddy breaks the cycle. He exits the "loyalty for loyalty" unspoken agreement with Ray and their relationship unravels. Ray does not kill Freddy, because of their past, and Ray is not that kind of person. I think we were all sort of disappointed, but it's obvious why Ray didn't off Freddy, the same reason he didn't off Dave: it was just business. Besides, Freddy's gambling will catch up to him, and both know that Ray won't bail him out next time. Freddy should have come to Ray to ambush Rafael, knowing full well the sort of damage Ray is capable of, but he panicked. Ray rolls up an entire crew to avenge Gaz, Gaz in turn finds a kidnapped girl inside of a day, Dave finds a competent and likable partner in crime and is ready to rock and roll at a moment's notice, but Freddy is too much of a bitch, and does not want to risk his hide for a friend.
I think it’s dumb he didn’t kill Freddy. Like if you did that to this type of person realistically and ended up getting one of his only legitimate friends killed… he’s going to kill you. 100 percent of the time. And you’d probably be lucky if it was quick and not a slow painful death.
