What I love about this sketch is that it's done so well, I don't feel it's dated because the humour clearly is on the dad's awkwardness and not mocking the gay characters themselves. Rare to find such a subject in comedy not date terribly
Yes, but due to political correctness such a character & sketches wouldn't be made now.
@@andrewq159 it depends how it's done. "Due to political correctness" sounds like a daily mail comment.
If people are offended they have a right to express that, but also not everyone is offended. Personally, I'm a gay man and find this sketch hilarious, it's written cleverly but some sketches from say the 60-70s with gay characters in make me cringe and shudder.
Also... I reckon things which are acceptable being broadcast today may not in 20-30 years time. Society and public opinion can change as do the generations
@P D what's a matter with you ? You a puff or something
@@robgilmour6001poof..
I'm pretty sure all the actors are straight which means progress because they will have had to have empathised to act the part. I reserve the right to be wrong, though.
Trainspotting, Black Hawk Down, Pearl Harbour are some of the biggest ones he's been in
He was in snatch, alien versus predator and Jack the giant slayer aswell:)
@@rsqui1441 Damn so many big ones.
And ofcourse pirates😆
@@stephendrury3409 was he or are you thinking of Mackenzie Crook
@@geoffm9924 i know but he insisted so i agreed😅
The guy you recognised is Ewin Bremner and he played Spud in Trainspotting.
His name is Ewen Bremner.
I'm gay as Hell and this remains funny as F! If only teen me watching this had known one day he too would have a 'Special Friend' ! So many good lines, I'm going to try and use 'Awfully nice and completely normal to meet you' sometime lol
Easy Connor, the guy you’re talking about is called Eeen Bremner, he’s been in many things, you’ve possibly seen him in Trainspotting or Alien vs predator, Black Hawk Down, Pearl Harbor, Snatch, they’re the ones you’re most likely to have seen.
And the guy who gets pulled by the tie as Bullet tooth tony is interrogating him; Snatch
@@harryfarrar1540 "Mullet" 😋
Pretty sure he played a crazy scottish pilot in the Dwayne Johnson film, something like “ Welcome to the Jungle” something like that.
Thank you holy crap blackhawkdown
@@McJibbin yeah I think it is the fella who goes deaf for a while after an explosion goes off near him
Hah, speaking from experience, if meeting your same-sex partner's parents goes like this, it's a resounding success. Not a single threat of physical violence.
Jesus that's bleak.
Hey he let them in the front door!!!!
That's a win there...😁
Harry Enfield was very clever at this style of comedy and exaggerating the situations. This one of being introduced to his 'sons friend' is especially good as it portrays what was, for many real life in the fifties and sixties.... His sketches of 1930 society are in scratchy black & white are brilliant in content and the attitude towards woman....
He was in trainspotting
the bed linen scene and the interview on drugs were hilarious 😂
I have seen this sketch a few times and it still make me laugh brilliant 😂😂
See how it’s spud from trainspotting?
The actor in the first clip is Ewen Bremner. He played the characters 'Spud' in both Trainspotting movies and 'Charlie' in both Wonder Woman movies.
Greetings from the UK, I watched this when it was first aired can't believe it's about 30 years ago and it's as funny now as it was then. HE, should be regarded as one of our national treasurer's but he stopped making shows, as he thought he was getting stale and has been lost to younger generations. Glad you like his work his characters a so British and easily identifiable to us and humour often gets lost abroad even when you speak the same language .Go Hawks
The actor you were wondering about, in movies you may have seen him as the Scottish sniper in the Wonder Woman film from 2017.
The dad really isn't homophobic. He wants to make his son and partner welcome but he can't help putting his foot in it. He has obviously never met an openly gay person before so doesn't know what to talk about. He thinks that he can't just talk about normal stuff. He is so busy thinking about what to say he ends up saying so mething stupid. As a gay guy I have never found the character offensive, just hilarious and I feel a bit sorry for him because of how lost he is in the modern world. ❤️❤️
I don't feel sorry for him. It is casual homophobia. I grew up in the boondocks of the Appalachian mountains and my family is like this but with POC.

So true, though. When you're warned not to mention something and it's then the only thing you can think about BECAUSE you're trying not to talk about it.
"She's just had a miscarriage, so don't talk about babies" ... and you weren't thinking about babies until you were told not to.
@@jimdaw65 Dont mention the war!
You forgot the last line of the sketch which makes it blatantly obvious what the Dad thinks of woolywooftas
He definitely is homophobic. Wiping your hands after shaking hands with someone because they're gay is pretty homophobic. It's very ingrained and not overtly hateful but it's definitely suggests an irrational fear and anxiety of and around homosexuality as well believing it to be an inferior 'trait' in a man.
I think this sketch continues or has more parts as they go to a pub together next.
Yes they do go off to the pub
To second the earlier suggestion - The Detectorists is a must! 👍
So true, though. When you're warned not to mention something and it's then the only thing you can think about BECAUSE you're trying not to talk about it.
the guy you find familiar i think that's Ewen Bremner (Scottish actor), he's been in Wonder Woman, Trainspotting & the sequel, Pearl Harbor, Snowpiercer & many other films but NOT Pirates of the Caribbean
"train spotting" movie, he played Spud
The Scottish one was Spud in Trainspotting.
That's Ewen Bremner, his been in quite a few films, think he first burst into the movie scene with Trainspotting, then moved onto the likes of Black Hawk Down and Snatch, his young here so it is understandable why you cannot put your finger on it. Pirates of the Caribbean was Mackenzie Crook, who was on the British version of The Office, and yeah similar sort of entrance and done around half a dozen more internationally known films.
If you can get your hands on a copy of Harry's version of Titanic from one of his Christmas specials. All the usual characters but absolutely brilliant.
He was in Trainspotting, with Obi Wan Kenobi, Sherlock Holmes and Mr. Gold.
Pearl Harbour.. is one of the films he's in. :)
P.s, pls do a reaction video to a series called 'Don't Hug Me I'm Scared' I was 'just' at the launch of their most recent season launch at the BFI, watching the first episode with the creators (who were also watching it for the first time, so they say), I think only the original series is available on UA-cam (where they started, before being properly funded by Channel 4 here in the U.K.).
Each of the original 6 episodes are about 2-6 mins also, so maybe all of them in one video?! :D :)
Connor, plz look out for the Harry Enfield black and white football game. Its hilarious 👍👍
I know this is 8 months ago but the guy you're referring to is Spud from Trainspotting and T2
This father is not homophobic ,just not used to the world and how it’s changed since he was young ,It’s really quite sweet
He was in trainspotting, snatch, black hawk down, he has been in a couple more but cant remember them off hand
This so reminds me of my ex father in law. His son was gay, and he just couldn't except it, not in a nasty way, but like this. I still think he calls Lawrences boyfriend a "special friend" and too this day they havent called him his boyfriend or partner. They've been together for about 35 years now, while their daughter has had three husbands!
But national records don't reflect that
The guy was the one who stuttered in Pearl Harbour
other dude was in Trainspotting, AvP and pretty sure Snatch also
The lad you referred to was Ewen Bremner. He was in Alien v Predator. 👍
Connor has to be the most sweetest man I know ❤🎉
That Ewan Bremner!!! Well he had to start somewhere lol. Train spotting, AvP, Wonder Women ect..
This was actually after Trainspotting. 1997 to be precise.
He was in Alien Vs Predator and loads of other films. He was also in the Wonder Woman (the first one).
Thank you! That's where I know him from. Both of those. I was trying my hardest to place him ever since the first time I saw this sketch a while back, and every time since. For some reason I kept thinking maybe he was in an episode of Absolutely Fabulous. But didn't really think so.
@@FLQueerLiberal1982 Yeah, hes one of those who has appeared in loads of Tv series and of course films. I just know the ones I mentioned to be the latest ones. Someone said trainspotting and more 80s era stuff. An d I remember seeing him in those too. Oha nd as someone else said, pearl harbour of course.
Ewen Bremner he was in Trainspotting. He also was in Snatch.....that's where I know him from
I don't think I've ever shouted Trainspotting so many times in a row. Trainspotting!
I know that guy played spud in the awesome film 'Trainspotting'
His name is Ewen Bremner and he was in AVP Aliens VS Predator movie....
you're thinking of Mackenzie Crook, who was in Pirates.
This skit cracks me up 🤣
the guy u werent sure about was in a film called train spotting.
It's Ewan Bremner been in loads of films.. He was spud in trainspotting.. He was in Pearl Harbour movie plus lots. Of other things I don't think he was in pirates tho
I think that guy was in pirates of the Caribbean, was he Roger the cabin boy, or maybe Master Bates or Seaman Staines.
Absolutely hilarious!!
The actor on left is spud in train spotting
Reckon you’re thinking the guy is either Mackenzie Crook from Pirates or a young Mark Williams from Harry Potter. Neither of them I’m afraid! Sorry , couldn’t find the actor’s name in this sketch.
Loads of great Harry Enfield stuff - Kathy Burke is a great sidekick. Have you seen Kevin and Perry Go Large?
Just realised Dominic was the one with the stutter in Pearl Harbour
When you guessed he was from Pirates of the Caribbean, were you thinking of Mackenzie Crook? (I have no idea if it was him in the bit, but I don't think so)
If you enjoy Crook, I can recommend a TV show form 2014-2017 called Detectorists. Only 18 episodes and a Christmas special. If you look up a description it may sound dull, but it was great.
And the Office
And 'Our Flag Means Death' in which may be the cause of the pirate conflation.
Its SPUD from Trainspotting
I love hearing you laugh. It’s medicinal.
Spud in Trainspotting is the bloke you've seen before
Spud from trainspotting is where you have seen him.
This is about half of the sketch, thanks to Copywrite rules. but always great to watch.
Spud from Train spotting films.
He is in the movie Trainspotting.
The guy you are asking about is Spud from Trainspotting.
Please react to Harry Enfield- Keep Your Virtue & Congegal Rights Guide -Thanks!!!
Check out Harry and Paul - David Cameron Quare
there is a 2nd part of this where they all go down to the pub
Ewen Bremmer was in trainspotting and Wonder Woman
He's one of the junkie characters in 'Trainspotting' and also the stuttering pilot in 'Pearl Harbour' Just to name a couple.
Have a look at Spike Milligan, the Pakistani Dalek, you may need to swat up on Daleks first, It's hilarious....
That last line is great
He was Spud in Trainspotting.
Spud from Trainspotting.
Death at a Funeral too.
You may know him from Death at a funeral (British version). 🌹🇿🇦🇿🇦🇿🇦
Alright pal from England! The Scottish guy has been in alot or films from I can recall, Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, Black Hawk Down and Trainspotting right off the top of my head. Probably quite a few more though. Cheers!
I'd forgotten about this sketch. The jokes are pretty indicative of 1990s attitudes towards the gay community, but aimed squarely at the absurdity of it all. Still quite funny, to be honest. I'm sure people are still experiencing these kind of awkward family moments.
Please react to Armstrong and Miller WW2 pilots 🤞🏻
It’s spud from train spotting!
He's Spud from Trainspotting.
Exactly Robert
That's Spud from Trainspotting
I hope you do them going to pub one
The guy you were thinking of at 3:53 is Mackenzie Crook, who played one of the zombie pirates in Pirates of the Caribbean; he also played Gareth in the original U.K. version of The Office. This guy looks quite like him though.
Have you watched any Alf Garnett yet?
He isnt homophobic he just doesnt know the "right" way to act and is trying his best.
Check out Harry Enfield's camp Hitler, absolutely hilarious 😂
He’s Spud from Trainspotting 👍🏴
Ewan Bremner
Don't rely on those subtitles, they don't understand british english either! lol AND PLEASE, play that Women Keep Your Virtue video!!
They don't understand any sort of English. It's all done phonetically.
Have you checked out Harry Enfield as Kevin yet?
He's from Trainspotting and Blackhawk Down
That guy is spud in trainspotting
